Featuring two French psychologists-turned-mixologists who first emerged on the dance scene with the disco-house LP Installation Sonore, Jean-Phillipe and Patou's Music Kills Me features a more rambunctious, guitar-fueled sound, but one that still turns the beat on full blast. Opening impressively with the pumping "Le Rock Summer," which neatly juxtaposes rock chords with classy disco strings, the album grows repetitious as it plays out, occasionally falling off the deep end with the stuck-in-a-time-warp "Dead Flowers" and the ugly downtempo vocal track "Resurrection d'une Guitar Hero." The disc is ultimately saved by its deep and subtle grooves, which tracks like "It's Time to Go Now," "Lost Love," and "No, We're Not Experienced" memorably use to their advantage. There's nothing overly original or inspiring here, but it does have an odd streak of charm. --Paul Sullivan

A Theme Song For Everyone.......2004-01-28

This album has a variety of tracks which can be listened to individually or collectively. Tracks range from cool and elegant to groovy and rambunctious. All in all, it feels like a movie soundtrack and has something for every mood. I love it as cruising music but also as a light hearted, fun and exceptionally unique listening experience.

Bad. Very bad attempts at creating atmospheric dance grooves. Not for the refined louge/dance listener. This CD seemed to get a lot of undeserved marketing for some reason (?). Sounds like it's generated by lifeless computer robot droids. If you want good lounge try Mezzanine De L'alcazar Vol 2. or the Hotel Costes 5. If you're looking for something more uptempo, try Mint Royale's "On the Ropes."

I expected more... but not bad........2002-10-09

After hearing (and loving) Installation Sonore, I was expecting more hyped-up music, more energetic, overall more exciting. A few of the songs on here are good, but overall, the cd sounds almost lounge-like. Its more downtempo than the first, which isn't to that its bad, its just totally the opposite of what I was looking for at the time I bought it. If you would have questioned me right after I purchased this, I would have given it 1 star, 2 if I was in a generous mood. But after giving it a few more listens, and letting it play out, it has grown on me some. Overall, it is a good album, but if you like the first album by Rinocerose, odds are you will probably not like this one as much.

I bought this for the voices of Michael Chance and James Bowman, as well as for Robert King. Once again these two famous counter-tenors are teamed up. Both with different voices but the perfect blend. Tracks 3 and 4 are solos, and the rest duets, with the singers complimenting each other magnificently. If you enjoy the mysterious and lengthy sound of sacred music, focusing specifically on the voice, you will love this recording.

The sacred music of Couperin has an intensity and power rarely found in baroque church music. It was mostly scored for one, two or 3 voices and continuo; this CD is an excellent example of his work. The name "tenebrae" probably refers to the darkness that gradually spread during the service as candles were extinguished one by one until Matins ended in darkness. The first 2 lessons are for solo voice;the third is a duet. The disc begins with a Motet which was written in honor of the marytr St. Bartholomew during which the 2 voices imitate and chase each other in 3rds. The selection "Venite Exultemus Domino" is largely an exultant text with suspensions of great beauty and ending in a surprisingly low tessitura. To my mind the "Magnificat" with its variety of textual moods and rich harmony is the real "showcase" on this recording! And with the 2 great countertenor voices of Chance and Bowman we have the best possible rendition. They are a great team vocally for they blend well and indeed are very similar in their singing style, although I think Chance as the edge in overall performance. A great recording in every way.

One of the greatest bands from the famed Boston music scene of the mid-late 90s. These lyrics touch me in a way that no one has in a very long time (since my dear friend James Nordon and I played in our band "Under the Porch - it was a progressive band - he played the flute, I the Hammer Dulcimer, but I digress). This Cd is truly a rare find. Looking for some good tunes in AUGUST!, look for Foundry and 'What Kills Me'. I've seen other reviews that say 'That's Terrible, I'm sorry', but that's houdinash.
