DJ Susan Morabito spins a set of high-energy music for high people on this disc. The Black Party is named for one of the marathon "circuit parties" that cater to a crowd of gay men with shared interests in bodybuilding and practical applications of chemistry. Kicking it off are vocal numbers from Nylon Moon and Gloworm (who also appeared on the Circuit Party Spins compilation along with Secret Life and Bumpin' K.). Things get more amorphous with the fine piano flip-out of Freakyman's "Discobug," and as the set wears on, Morabito delivers the frenzied buildups and explosive releases right on schedule. Throughout, things are as light as air (and also light as Air)--it sounds like one of the first sets of the night, before the, um, atmosphere kicks in and the DJ starts spinning darker and sexier stuff. A dollar from the sale of each album goes to LIFEbeat, a music-industry AIDS resource and awareness organization. --John Sanchez

As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise SheppardRecommended Black Eyed Peas Discography

Before Steve Albini shaped alt rock's sound in the '90s as producer (or recorder, he says) of Nirvana, PJ Harvey, and countless others, he fronted Chicago's Big Black, one of the most brutal and brilliant punk groups to ever play along with a drum machine. Originally released in 1986, The Hammer Party collects the band's first three EPs, made between 1982 and 1984. Lungs featured Albini's machine-gun guitar and vocals, accompanied only by Roland the drum machine. The following year's Bulldozer added a bassist and second guitarist for an even more punishing sound, while Racer-X further refined the Big Black's sonic assault. Together on one disc, The Hammer Party, they serve as a disturbing, ear-shattering prequel to the rest of this group's fine oeuvre. --Roni SarigCustomer Reviews:

You are probably in or were in a band to enjoy this, and probably made your own tape with a Roland, cheap guitar and amp and a 4-track tascam.
I get the biggest kick out of the "Top Gun" and "Flashdance" drum samples being used for nefarious purposes (Racer X ep content.)
"Texas" is by far the most intense and mean spirited, spiteful song I have ever heard. I love it.

Album Description
Pop Levi completely explodes the already-tired consensus of rock music, with equal parts psychedelia and glam, as he carries you on a wave of jagged guitar riffs, rumbling drums, fuzzed up bass and his unique vocals. Call it astral projection if you like, but Pop Levi is going to be a star.Customer Reviews:

Good if you're in the mood..........2007-05-22
This is at times almost bubblegum pop, done very well. There are elements of T-Rex, but also hints of techno. The tracks vary widely in sound and feel, and there does seem to be plenty of evidence to suggest Pop Levi is very inventive. From experience, this is a good party record. If you're in the mood for melody, harmony and meaningful lyrics though, go elsewhere.
Brilliant.......2007-03-14
Unlike the "spotlight" reviewer, I appreciate the variety and suprises. The cohesive factor throughout is coolness.
His future looks bright, but the present can be dull........2007-02-28
The album actually starts off on a high note with the driving distortion and piercing vocals of "Sugar Assault Me Now." Despite a few deliberately missed notes, the song is energetic, fun, and admittedly pretty catchy. Here, as he does throughout the album, Levi stacks layers upon layers of vocals and guitars to make the songs sound fuller and more complete. It works quite well. This great song is followed by the album's first single and arguably strongest song, "Blue Honey." The song is plagued by a repetitive bass line, but is saved by the artist's vocal performance in the chorus ("It's the way you squeeze me, baby"). It sounds like the better moments of classic rock, often stepping into Led Zepplin territory, without fully sounding like a rip-off.
"(A Style Called) Cryin' Chic" has a steady groove to it, but not much else to offer. The lyrics here are repetitive to the point of being annoying. Essentially, Levi takes one line, repeats it four times, and then does the same thing with about a dozen other lines. The actual 2-bar guitar riff doesn't ever change throughout the song, which just adds to the repetitiveness of it. "Pick Me Up Uppercut" is probably my favorite song on the album, despite it being the most obnoxious song since Aqua's "Barbie Girl." It has a very unique appeal to it, and sounds like a mix between glam rock and The Go-Gos.
The album goes off the deep-end from here, never really recapturing the energy or appeal that it began with. "Dollar Bill Rock" is a futile attempt at classic rock n roll, though one could definitely assume that it would be a better song live than it is here. "Flirting" lends the help of a xylophone to give it a more friendly feel, but like so many other songs on the album, it suffers from being incredibly repetitive. To be honest, "From the Day That You Were Born" is the album's only real notable track throughout it's second half. Levi plays acoustic guitar and sings, but not much else is happening. On an album that is full of layers and layers of vocals, guitars, and other noise, the song serves as a peaceful and welcomed break. It ends the album on a positive note, which is always appreciated.
If "The Return to Form Black Magick Party" is the best that Pop Levi has to offer, his career will either be short-lived or elongated on a wave of hype. Fortunately for the artist, however, the album seems to really be the tip of the iceberg for Levi. Though it's really hit or miss, it's high points are good enough to get even the most skeptical listener excited for what this artist has yet to do. That's enough of a reason to give it a listen in my book. Pop Levi is a name you might want to remember, even if this album isn't your thing.
Recommended for fans of classic rock and anyone who wants to hear what the future of indie rock could very well sound like.

Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29
As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.
Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?
This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.
The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.
So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

Son Of A Gun!!!.......2006-06-14
Arguably their best effort, Black Oak Arkansas was one of the hottest groups around in the mid-70's when they released their sixth album entitled "Street Party" in 1974. Following up on their excellent 1973 release "High On The Hog", "Street Party" continued the pattern of mixing blistering rock tunes with down-home bluegrass-country numbers that was both satisfying and frustrating at the same time. The rock-only crowd (most of my friends at the time) considered tunes like the Caribbean/calypso flavored "Good Good Woman", the chain gang dirge of "Sure Been Workin' Hard", the doleful country offering "Going Home", the odd spiritual pair of tunes both entitled "Brink Of Creation", and the bluegrass-tinged "Everybody Wants To See Heaven" to be novel distractions at best that disturbed the momentum created by the smokin' rock numbers ("Dancing In The Streets", "Sting Me", "Jail Bait", "Son Of A Gun", "I'm A Man", "Dixie", and "Hey Y'All"). Then there were those like me who found this mixture to be an enriching experience and extremely effective inasmuchas it came from a group of seriously good musicians who decided to have some serious fun while putting out a seriously good musical product that didn't have to be taken so seriously to be enjoyed. Thanks to releases like "Street Party", I developed the ability to appreciate other musical genres beyond rock and roll at an earlier age than many of my teenaged counterparts.
And here's a nod to reviewer "mdavis255" from San Antonio for bringing up the comparison to the Darlin family on The Andy Griffith Show. Good call as the scenario you described is quite valid. However, let there be no doubt that BOA are rockers first and foremost who just happen not to have any reservations at all about slipping into their bib overalls and breaking down on some hot and nasty bluegrass and country when the mood hits them.
So there you have it; if the variety of styles described in this review appeal to you, listening to "Street Party" should be a very rewarding experience.
Give us what we want........2004-03-13
Please, stop calling this "Southern Rock". This is (do I dare say it?), Hill-billy music; Electrified Bluegrass. Remember the Darlin family on The Andy Griffith Show? These are those guys ten years later with electic instruments. And I LOVE what they did.
This album and the rest of the catalog MUST be remastered and repackaged.
I add this as a side note. Has'nt anyone in the music business figured out what we, the consumer, really want? Give us the vinyl the way it was pressed with the original label and the same full-size Album sleeve and all the original packaging. And then give us the remastered CD so we never have to play the vinyl if we don't want to. Here's a shocker... WE'll PAY FOR IT!

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

Damnation: Ride the Madness, Salvation: Are You Ready to Die?
Eva-O Manufacturer: MCM Music ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B0007WC9K0 |
Product Description
Eva-O's life has been one of extremes-from the darkest depths of the occult to new birth in Christ. Years of depravity with bands that mixed metallic death rock and Goth brought her to the end of her self. Damnation was the controversial first part of a two part CD release. We say controversial because it focused on the 'bad news' of sin and death. The second half of the project was titled Salvation ~ Are You Ready To Die?, that focused on the 'good news' of deliverance through Jesus Christ. Damnation in its original, extended form, was released on MCM Music in Germany in 2001, and is no longer available. It offered a bleak and eerie portrait of judgment and certain condemnation. Eva O combines dark-wave ambient keyboards with world beat percussion and industrial metal guitars to support a voice that speaks authoritatively of harsh and ugly things. The completed project was released on another German label in 2004. Though the CD concludes on a triumphant note, the feeble of heart may lack the fortitude to get that far. It was produced by Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine, and also features Josh Pyle of Audio Paradox.Customer Reviews:
