Black Party

Editorial Reviews

DJ Susan Morabito spins a set of high-energy music for high people on this disc. The Black Party is named for one of the marathon "circuit parties" that cater to a crowd of gay men with shared interests in bodybuilding and practical applications of chemistry. Kicking it off are vocal numbers from Nylon Moon and Gloworm (who also appeared on the Circuit Party Spins compilation along with Secret Life and Bumpin' K.). Things get more amorphous with the fine piano flip-out of Freakyman's "Discobug," and as the set wears on, Morabito delivers the frenzied buildups and explosive releases right on schedule. Throughout, things are as light as air (and also light as Air)--it sounds like one of the first sets of the night, before the, um, atmosphere kicks in and the DJ starts spinning darker and sexier stuff. A dollar from the sale of each album goes to LIFEbeat, a music-industry AIDS resource and awareness organization. --John Sanchez

As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

New to this genre, I am blown away! Variety, beat, talent... I can not get to my other cds. CAN NOT agree with other unimpressed reviewers. Listen once, listen twice... Listen to that complex music and those words!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-31

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

Before Steve Albini shaped alt rock's sound in the '90s as producer (or recorder, he says) of Nirvana, PJ Harvey, and countless others, he fronted Chicago's Big Black, one of the most brutal and brilliant punk groups to ever play along with a drum machine. Originally released in 1986, The Hammer Party collects the band's first three EPs, made between 1982 and 1984. Lungs featured Albini's machine-gun guitar and vocals, accompanied only by Roland the drum machine. The following year's Bulldozer added a bassist and second guitarist for an even more punishing sound, while Racer-X further refined the Big Black's sonic assault. Together on one disc, The Hammer Party, they serve as a disturbing, ear-shattering prequel to the rest of this group's fine oeuvre. --Roni Sarig

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars At the Starting Gate.......2006-07-28

Honestly, each ep contained on this cd should be reviewed seperately but taken as a whole, as Big Black's early material, it is pretty impressive and an interesting diversion from the typical "loud, fast and sloppy" punk and hardcore sound a like bands that were the competition. Songs like "Cables", "Pigeon Kill", "Dead Billy" and "Seth" up the ante to the later brilliance that would be Big Black. Since each song was deliberately constructed, Big Black got labelled as "math rock" (a meaningless rock critic term if you ask me). Many bands at the time were dealing with politically incorrect subjects but Big Black is actually good music (though not something you'd sing to yourself). Industrial/metal/noise bands would "borrow" some of the ideas contained here. And yes, Albini is not nearly as scary as he sounds but if you are into Big Black, you've probably guessed that already.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Pretty Picture.......2005-09-09

Whether or not you believed Albini's rants or whether or not you despised him is really secondary to one thing---he and Big Black affected you one way or another. You could not listen to a Big Black record and not come away thinking "what the hell was that?" And to some degree that was the point. Big Black was a machine of distruction with one goal in mind---piss people off. If you liked it then great--if you didn't then who the expletive cares. Albini and co. were probably more punk than 99% of the bands of their time who claimed they were punk and lets face facts--most punks probably did'nt get Big Black anyhow. Sure at times they sounded like an audio parody of a John Waters movie but most of the time Albini's twisted version of middle America sounded very disturbing and to this day no one has equaled it.

4 out of 5 stars You won't feel any better after listening..........2004-04-03

That's not to say that this album is bad at all. I guess if you are buying a Big Black album in the first place, you are not looking to be uplifted by the message of the songs.

You are probably in or were in a band to enjoy this, and probably made your own tape with a Roland, cheap guitar and amp and a 4-track tascam.

I get the biggest kick out of the "Top Gun" and "Flashdance" drum samples being used for nefarious purposes (Racer X ep content.)

"Texas" is by far the most intense and mean spirited, spiteful song I have ever heard. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Good Policeman is a Dead One.......2003-08-26

Big Black were unquestionably one of the finest independent rock bands of the '80s. They were loud, crushing, intense and best of all, uncompromising, not giving a flying fudge how they came off to anyone else. Hence, this caused extreme, uninhibited, great art. At the same time, lyrically, the band was like a well-oiled machine that took people's false perceptions of America, chewed them up and spit them out, exposing its dark side for all to see. For virgins of the band, "The Hammer Party" is a fine place to start. Many feel that the first EP, "Lungs" is not the band's best by a long shot, but I still love the quirky charms of this ameturish first record. "Steelworker" and "Dead Billy" are Big Black classics worth a listen. The next EP featured might be the best one the band ever churned out, "Bulldozer." There is no denying the brillance of tracks like "Cables" and "Pigeon Kill" which mock white trash mentalities and combine social commentary with crushing pounding riffs. Finally, the CD also includes the "Racer X" EP, which includes the humorous title track based on the evil twin of "Speed Racer" and a lyrically quintessential song, "The Ugly American." Throughout this disc, one may hear hints of industrial music, but this is mainly due to the use of a drum machine, which was an integral part of the band's assault. This music is bleak, depressing, and ugly (also great if you are angry), but hey, that was the point. Big Black knew what they wanted to do and they accomplished it well.

4 out of 5 stars I don't know why she's so scchipu..........2003-05-15

Big Black were like the musical equivalent of tourette's, screaming every ugly thought they had as if theit lives depended upon them spitting it out. This shows them in their early stages (or tics and the occasional swear-word). Lungs, their first EP is so musically slight as to be insignificant, far too skinny-tie bullshìt, but has great psychotic redneck ranting. Bulldozer and Racer X more than compensate. They kick your lard-clad booty mis-shapen.

Album Description

Pop Levi completely explodes the already-tired consensus of rock music, with equal parts psychedelia and glam, as he carries you on a wave of jagged guitar riffs, rumbling drums, fuzzed up bass and his unique vocals. Call it astral projection if you like, but Pop Levi is going to be a star.

5 out of 5 stars Baby caught us flirtiing...........2007-06-14

Pop Levi is an amazing artist and absolutely incredible live. If you listen to nothing else, do yourself a favor and listen to the songs 'Flirting' and 'Sugar Assault Me'. Then after you are properly infatuated, by the cd.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you're in the mood..........2007-05-22

Pop Levi has me betwixt and between. Some days I love this album. On others, I can't stand it.

This is at times almost bubblegum pop, done very well. There are elements of T-Rex, but also hints of techno. The tracks vary widely in sound and feel, and there does seem to be plenty of evidence to suggest Pop Levi is very inventive. From experience, this is a good party record. If you're in the mood for melody, harmony and meaningful lyrics though, go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-03-14

Amidst so much tired and rehashed "music" filling current CD shelves, it's refreshing to hear something different. Not only that -- you'll get something different out of this album every time you listen to it.

Unlike the "spotlight" reviewer, I appreciate the variety and suprises. The cohesive factor throughout is coolness.

3 out of 5 stars His future looks bright, but the present can be dull........2007-02-28

There's always one that you just don't understand. An album that receives near-unanimous praise, but you can't really understand where it's all coming from. Pop Levi has been around for a while, making brief appearances with several other artists, the most notable of which is probably Ladytron. "The Return to Form Black Magick Party," however, is the artist's first solo album and first opportunity to gain fans of his own. He tries, but oftentimes the album feels more like he's trying too hard to impress. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just utterly confusing. One thing's for sure, in the 40 plus minutes of Pop Levi's debut there's probably something for everyone, just not enough of it.

The album actually starts off on a high note with the driving distortion and piercing vocals of "Sugar Assault Me Now." Despite a few deliberately missed notes, the song is energetic, fun, and admittedly pretty catchy. Here, as he does throughout the album, Levi stacks layers upon layers of vocals and guitars to make the songs sound fuller and more complete. It works quite well. This great song is followed by the album's first single and arguably strongest song, "Blue Honey." The song is plagued by a repetitive bass line, but is saved by the artist's vocal performance in the chorus ("It's the way you squeeze me, baby"). It sounds like the better moments of classic rock, often stepping into Led Zepplin territory, without fully sounding like a rip-off.

"(A Style Called) Cryin' Chic" has a steady groove to it, but not much else to offer. The lyrics here are repetitive to the point of being annoying. Essentially, Levi takes one line, repeats it four times, and then does the same thing with about a dozen other lines. The actual 2-bar guitar riff doesn't ever change throughout the song, which just adds to the repetitiveness of it. "Pick Me Up Uppercut" is probably my favorite song on the album, despite it being the most obnoxious song since Aqua's "Barbie Girl." It has a very unique appeal to it, and sounds like a mix between glam rock and The Go-Gos.

The album goes off the deep-end from here, never really recapturing the energy or appeal that it began with. "Dollar Bill Rock" is a futile attempt at classic rock n roll, though one could definitely assume that it would be a better song live than it is here. "Flirting" lends the help of a xylophone to give it a more friendly feel, but like so many other songs on the album, it suffers from being incredibly repetitive. To be honest, "From the Day That You Were Born" is the album's only real notable track throughout it's second half. Levi plays acoustic guitar and sings, but not much else is happening. On an album that is full of layers and layers of vocals, guitars, and other noise, the song serves as a peaceful and welcomed break. It ends the album on a positive note, which is always appreciated.

If "The Return to Form Black Magick Party" is the best that Pop Levi has to offer, his career will either be short-lived or elongated on a wave of hype. Fortunately for the artist, however, the album seems to really be the tip of the iceberg for Levi. Though it's really hit or miss, it's high points are good enough to get even the most skeptical listener excited for what this artist has yet to do. That's enough of a reason to give it a listen in my book. Pop Levi is a name you might want to remember, even if this album isn't your thing.

Recommended for fans of classic rock and anyone who wants to hear what the future of indie rock could very well sound like.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

4 out of 5 stars Son Of A Gun!!!.......2006-06-14

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Arguably their best effort, Black Oak Arkansas was one of the hottest groups around in the mid-70's when they released their sixth album entitled "Street Party" in 1974. Following up on their excellent 1973 release "High On The Hog", "Street Party" continued the pattern of mixing blistering rock tunes with down-home bluegrass-country numbers that was both satisfying and frustrating at the same time. The rock-only crowd (most of my friends at the time) considered tunes like the Caribbean/calypso flavored "Good Good Woman", the chain gang dirge of "Sure Been Workin' Hard", the doleful country offering "Going Home", the odd spiritual pair of tunes both entitled "Brink Of Creation", and the bluegrass-tinged "Everybody Wants To See Heaven" to be novel distractions at best that disturbed the momentum created by the smokin' rock numbers ("Dancing In The Streets", "Sting Me", "Jail Bait", "Son Of A Gun", "I'm A Man", "Dixie", and "Hey Y'All"). Then there were those like me who found this mixture to be an enriching experience and extremely effective inasmuchas it came from a group of seriously good musicians who decided to have some serious fun while putting out a seriously good musical product that didn't have to be taken so seriously to be enjoyed. Thanks to releases like "Street Party", I developed the ability to appreciate other musical genres beyond rock and roll at an earlier age than many of my teenaged counterparts.

And here's a nod to reviewer "mdavis255" from San Antonio for bringing up the comparison to the Darlin family on The Andy Griffith Show. Good call as the scenario you described is quite valid. However, let there be no doubt that BOA are rockers first and foremost who just happen not to have any reservations at all about slipping into their bib overalls and breaking down on some hot and nasty bluegrass and country when the mood hits them.

So there you have it; if the variety of styles described in this review appeal to you, listening to "Street Party" should be a very rewarding experience.

3 out of 5 stars Give us what we want........2004-03-13

I rated this album low based on what the fast dollar CD distributors want to shove down our throats and not on the content of the album, That's worth five stars. Of all the BOA albums this may be my favorite although there's several that run close seconds to it. Here's where I think Black Oak was at their best.
Please, stop calling this "Southern Rock". This is (do I dare say it?), Hill-billy music; Electrified Bluegrass. Remember the Darlin family on The Andy Griffith Show? These are those guys ten years later with electic instruments. And I LOVE what they did.
This album and the rest of the catalog MUST be remastered and repackaged.
I add this as a side note. Has'nt anyone in the music business figured out what we, the consumer, really want? Give us the vinyl the way it was pressed with the original label and the same full-size Album sleeve and all the original packaging. And then give us the remastered CD so we never have to play the vinyl if we don't want to. Here's a shocker... WE'll PAY FOR IT!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

      Product Description

Eva-O's life has been one of extremes-from the darkest depths of the occult to new birth in Christ. Years of depravity with bands that mixed metallic death rock and Goth brought her to the end of her self. Damnation was the controversial first part of a two part CD release. We say controversial because it focused on the 'bad news' of sin and death. The second half of the project was titled Salvation ~ Are You Ready To Die?, that focused on the 'good news' of deliverance through Jesus Christ. Damnation in its original, extended form, was released on MCM Music in Germany in 2001, and is no longer available. It offered a bleak and eerie portrait of judgment and certain condemnation. Eva O combines dark-wave ambient keyboards with world beat percussion and industrial metal guitars to support a voice that speaks authoritatively of harsh and ugly things. The completed project was released on another German label in 2004. Though the CD concludes on a triumphant note, the feeble of heart may lack the fortitude to get that far. It was produced by Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine, and also features Josh Pyle of Audio Paradox.

      5 out of 5 stars EVA'S BACK!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-02

And this time, she's got a wonderfully dark, hard driving industrial metal/goth sound! If this a CHRISTIAN record; it's the angriest damn one I've ever heard! pick this up now!
