3 out of 5 stars a classic, but not everyone's cup o tea.......2007-05-16

slightly improved song writing compared to his self titled album, but still not on par with the jazz fusion writing of his contemporaries (Zawinul, Shorter, Corea, Hancock, or even Pastorius at the time and since then Marcus Miller, etc). some great bass playing, a fun, funky spirit, but on the whole, sorta dull album if you prefer jazzier sounding fusion. maybe it's apples and oranges but i endlessly prefer the stuff Shorter and Zawinul were doing at that time. still an important bass record though.

5 out of 5 stars One of the defining albums of jazz electric bass........2007-05-02

Widely considered one of the two essential jazz bass guitar records (the other being Jaco Pastorious' eponymous debut record, also released in 1976), "School Days" finds virtuoso Stanley Clarke providing a good indication of what he's made of. Supported by a fine ensemble (usually Raymond Gomez on guitar, David Sancious on keys and either Gerry Brown or Steve Gadd on drums), Clarke creates a record that is very much a funk bass call to arms. And certainly as a bassist, I find myself, even years after I've first heard this one, picking my jaw up off the ground (listening to the first 30 seconds of closer "Life is Just a Game" will do that to you).

One thing immediately noticable about the record is that it's startling diverse, sliding easily from loping funk ("School Days") to slithering synths ("Quiet Afternoon"), old school horn-driven funk jazz ("Life is Just a Game") and even a slice of acoustic calm in the midst of the storm ("Desert Song", featuring Clarke on an upright and guitarist John McLaughlin on acoustic guitar). Throughout, the playing is top notch and it maintains itself as engaging.

One point I'd like to make-- this album is screaming for remastering. The 1990 CD transfer just doesn't cut it. But this aside, "School Days" is a classic, a great slice of funk-driven fusion jazz, and for anyone wanting to see blazing chops on a bass guitar, this is where to look.

5 out of 5 stars Freaked Out.............2005-12-06

Let me clear the line-up first:

Personnel includes: Stanley Clarke (vocals, piano, acoustic, electric & piccolo basses, handbells, gong, chimes); Jack Nimitz, Buddy Childers, Lew McCreary, George Bohanon, William Peterson, Stuart Blumberg, Albert Aarons (brass); David Sancious (organ, keyboards, Mini-Moog synthesizer, guitar); George Duke (keyboards); Billy Cobham (Moog synthesizer, drums); Icarus Johnson (acoustic & electric guitars); John McLaughlin (acoustic guitar); Raymond Gomez (guitar) Gerry Brown (drums, handbells); Steve Gadd (drums); Milt Holland (congas, triangle, percussion).

All the geniuses are together to show the best of their funk jazz effort. Stanley Clarke was always the best in bass rhythm no matter he is solo or with jean luc ponty. He can mix with any situation and creates something anew. This is one of the funkiest jazz I have it with me.

Grab it.....

5 out of 5 stars FUNK YEAH.......2005-09-10

Im only a 15 white kid but I think I know good music when I hear it, Stanley Clarkes school days is my all time favorite jazz album, The bass playing blew me through puberty and the other musicians were all jazz legends. This is truly an amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars Schoolin'.......2005-08-23

I keep telling friends that of all the jazz funk albums released back in the 1970's, "School Days" was probably the best of them all. It is probably because Stanley Clarke, the master bassist, didn't resist the time he was living and playing in; he embraced it. He put the funk right in the middle of this album, recruited a brilliant group of musicians who all played with energy and passion, and just let it all come together like any jazz album, be it fusion, traditional, bebop, New Orleans style, free jazz or whatever. This isn't simply funk and jazz riffs being fused; these are well crafted and composed compositions full of emotion, power, and tradition. "School Days," the title track, gets the album started by announcing to the world and any doubters, that funk is here to stay and jazz and funk can easily co-exist. Clarke provides the statement with the legendary funk opening, and the album is off and running. There are no wasted moments either. "Quiet Afternoon" is brilliant. "Hot Fun" is a jazz jam. "Life is Just a Game" is bold and majestic. Each song is a unique piece of creativity that adds to Clarke's statement. Perhaps, he is giving the world a lesson here or maybe he is just remembering when he was in school; regardless, "School Days" was a funk era masterpiece of electric jazz. None of Miles' electric stuff was ever this good, but then again, as I wrote at the beginning, this is the best jazz funk album ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

4 out of 5 stars A great addition.......2005-08-20

Joan Morris and her husband, composer William Bolcom, take another trip back to the early days of Broadway musicals and earlier. In the same groove as their earlier albums, After the Ball and Vaudeville. A great addition to your collection if you love this kind of music, performed the way it was meant to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars Joan Morris and William Bolcom return to their roots.......1999-03-13

Back in 1974, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and her husband, William Bolcom, recorded "After the Ball," a collection of turn-of-the-century popular songs, some of which hadn't been recorded since the early part of the century, if ever. Now, after bringing their talents to the music of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and most recently, Vincent Youmans, they return to the turn of the century with this delightful collection. Note: no compromises were made with the original turn-of-the-century lyrics; this CD is not for those obsessed with "political correctness." But then, those obsessed with political correctness generally don't have much taste, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Playful With 1st Recorded Glimpse Of Coltrane.......2005-12-23

1st.. get the remaster of this CD available with the bonus tracks..included is an alternate version of Caravan(The "sister" CD release THE CHAMP is a must with this one also remastered with bonus material) and 3 tracks from the Blue Note Charlie Parker and Dizzy album Diz n Bird at Carnegie Hall (1947)
As to the music here, timeless pieces of jazz with a sense of humour throughout..These Savoy sides are real bop treasures to those who know. The Champ is an essential pur cahse to this one.

      2 out of 5 stars Not essential.......2000-09-13

And on top of that a rip-off...the CD has less than 30 minutes worth of material.

      2 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2000-08-18

This is not a CD to put on and "dig your teeth into". Frankly it is somewhat boring. It is best suited for back ground music at best. There are no real instumental explorations. Just a bunch of short songs with alot of vocls, nothing to get excited about.

5 out of 5 stars I just love that dizzy groove.......2000-01-09

I just love that groove that dizzy does and this CD sure has it. I like his humor and his style its all groovy. this just gives ya that good groovy feelin, the feelin you get in the summertime and the spring, like no responsibilities! its groovy!

5 out of 5 stars The Diz at his very best.......1999-07-21

Dizzy Gillespie put together an amazing crew for this album. This is one of those wonderful, sweet, funny and proficient albums that truly proves that Gillespie was "the perfect Jazz musician." One thing you can't get from the Amazon on line music samples from this album is the wonderful tonal quality of the recording. This is a superb listening experience that I highly recommend for all audiophiles.

Be warned! This album is not for every mood - this is a bright mellow sound that goes best with a leisurely Sunday breakfast.

4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL (but missing something.).......2003-03-19

After a while, although some of the songs sound the same, it grows on you. This, being my favorite childhood book, thrilled me to no end. The singers: great. The music: fun. The jokes: hilarious.

      Worth it! Very much so!
