One disc is not enough........2007-07-14
Over the Top, as Usual.......2007-06-02
Love him or loathe him........2007-05-23
It's a wonder the man, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, has time for a pop career at all.
But what a colourful career it has been. Love him or loathe him, in terms of sales and lasting popularity the singer, with over three decades of back catalogue, has more than earned his superstar status.
Never a conventional looker with his Lily Savage specs and rug bouffant, John's ability to dip into soul, disco and country as well as classic pop and progressive rock on tracks such as "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "Your Song", "Sacrifice' and "I'm Still Standing", has made him a musical legend.
Through sales slumps and well-publicised fall-outs with lyricist Bernie Taupin, the music maestro has managed more comebacks than Cher's Farewell tour.
To mark the occasion of his 60th birthday, Elton John releases a special edition 2-disc edition that includes a bonus DVD featuring five promo videos spanning the last four decades and five prevously unreleased tracks from his legendary Red Piano Las Vegas show.
The main CD features 18 tracks of hits spanning the likes of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Candle In The Wind", including "Tiny Dancer" (the song that was immortalised by the filmmaker Cameron Crowe in his fictional rockumentary "Almost Famous").
The collection veers more towards his Seventies' work and mixes the ballads with the rowdier numbers such as "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting") and "I'm Still Standing".
Some of the tracks are overly sentimental, particularly the latter stuff, but there's no getting away from the quality of recordings such as "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long Long Time)".
Fans will lap it up as part of the birthday celebrations, even though there's been a better "greatest hits" collection only few years ago.
But it's hard to begrudge such an enduring and popular artist his place in the limelight, particularly now that he's reached 60 years of age.
On the whole this is as solid a compilation as anyone who lacks a bit of Elton in their collection could wish for.
Rocket Man, Number Ones by Elton John.......2007-05-17
One of my favorites is "Tiny Dancer", a song written about Maxine Feibelmann, a dancer who was on tour with Elton and who later married Bernie Taupin. They are divorced now, but the song will forever be a beautiful story and mind's eye visual performance to me. Close your eyes when you listen, you can see her dance.
Now, one song I would have liked on this compilation is "Ticking." That is just me, and that song is another of my all-time favorites.
When you're finished listening to disc one, you'll be filled with memories of where you were and what you were doing at the time each of the songs hit the airwaves. It was a nice return to the past. You can sing along, wash dishes, take a walk, or just listen. It was nice to have all the hits in one place.
As much as I love the music, I really loved the second disc in the set. The DVD is also broken up into two sections.
Five videos (the good kind - the when MTV was all about videos kind) are on the disc. "Tinderbox" is nostalgic and you see some of the old band mates when they were young and footage of shows and concerts, bus trips and plane rides. The cinematography is awesome and I'm not sure if I watched or listened more.
If you remember "I Want Love", this is a haunting piece that uses Robert Downey, Jr. He's in an empty apartment looking for love with sad eyes, hardwood floors, a fireplace and great windows. I think I want to live there. Although the focus in this piece is on Downey, Elton sings lyrics that weave a story. You will also smile at the video of "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues." This video hits home now with the war and so many soldiers leaving and returning to the United States. At the end of the "Your Song" video, I clapped. In my study, alone with my cat, Gus, I clapped at my laptop screen.
Don't fear if you're a fan of live music. This compilation has something on there for you as well. You can see performances from Elton's "The Red Piano Show" in Las Vegas.
I loved the concert footage. I forgot how great Elton John was on stage. I saw him in Cleveland a long time ago. I was a size 5 then, more interested in scanning the crowd for boys then appreciating that I was in the presence of a fantastic performer. Oh, so is youth.
Speaking of youth, if you are a bit older, like me, this is a great CD to share with your kids. They will get a good review of Elton's work and also get to see him perform.

First the Beatles, now Elton.......2007-06-04
Fans of EJ will not really find anything new here (unless they buy the DVD version of this album which contains a number of stage performances). For the casual listener, however, this CD contains a treasure trove of EJ's greatest hits. Bigger fans who are part of the Ipod generation will probably have all of these songs downloaded already, though.
It's a great album of depth which includes the early richly orchestrated hits such as "Your Song", "Tiny Dancer", "Daniel" and "Rocket Man" through his late 70s' and 80s' body of work which included "Yellow Brick Road", "Crocodile Rock", "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart", and 11 other chart toppers.
One last note, I was impressed with Island Music's decision to produce this CD with eco-friendly packaging and hope that other music labels consider to follow suit.
What in the world were they thinking?!.......2007-04-23
No sale!
The Ever-Eminent EJ.......2007-04-12
One irksome aspect of the disc is that it does not necessarily adhere to the definition of the #1 single. Some songs that did not reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 are included due to reaching the pole position on another chart, such as the Adult Contemporary tally or, in the case of the ever-evocative classic title track of 1973's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," the now-defunct Cash Box Pop chart.
Meanwhile, some Hot 100 toppers like the Lady Di tribute "Candle In the Wind 1997" and "That's What Friends Are For," his Grammy-winning collaboration with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, do not show up. The same goes for many A/C number ones like "Believe" and the ever-ignored "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That," his late 80's comeback single.
Still, the disc is perfect for the most casual of Elton listeners, and even includes some non-chart toppers like "Tiny Dancer" and "Your Song" under the heading of "And Other Favorites." Those who simply aren't satisfied by just the likes of "Island Girl" and "Philadelphia Freedom" and want other heavy hitters like "Levon" and "Nikita," however, would be more satisfied with the 2-disc set "Greatest Hits 1970-2002."
The limited edition version contains a bonus DVD with 5 performances from his current Las Vegas stint "The Red Piano" that blow the roof off the house, as well as 5 music videos including the classics "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" and "I'm Still Standing," not to mention the incredible visual spectacle that is "Tinderbox" from his underratted 2006 LP "The Captain and the Kid."
Elton Finest.......2007-04-07
interesting selection.......2007-04-07
Of course, there's plenty of other classic songs that weren't included here that SHOULD have been. "someone saved my life tonight" probably being the biggest question mark. Where is it? I don't know if that song in particular reached number one, but the album title is misleading anyway because it doesn't focus entirely on number one hits, so the song should have been included.
Also, if you own classic Elton John albums from the early 70's, you already know that his biggest hits are most certainly NOT his best songs. That's the truth. You should probably seek those albums out first, such as Tumbleweed Connection and Captain Fantastic.

All technicalities aside, this is one awesome set by Elton John !!!.......2007-06-01
The CD starts off with eighteen massive Elton John hits; and the track set begins with the classic "Bennie and The Jets." The sound is excellent, as it remains throughout the entire CD. "Philadelphia Freedom" follows with an incredible beat; Elton's voice remains in excellent form here. The touching ballad "Daniel" continues the track set as Elton wishes his friend Daniel had not left him.
Other timeless hits--and truthfully, that would probably mean the whole album--include "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting);" this tune rocks hard as Elton sings a timeless classic about youthful rebellion that any generation can appreciate. "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" features Elton singing about a love going bad; and "Tinderbox" touches me with stunning arrangements that prove Elton is still going strong!
But there's more. We get the beautiful ballad "Your Song" with its lush and very moving musical arrangement; and "Candle In The Wind" possesses equal sensitivity. "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time)" allows Elton the chance to sing about a love that goes wrong; and the CD also gives us the beautiful "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" which lets Elton sing of a romance with a wealthy woman that he can't value based on his principles.
There's still more; the DVD gives us a generous portion of Elton's 2005 "Red Piano Show" in Las Vegas; and you also get five bonus videos made at various times during Elton's career. The "Red Piano Show" video lasts about 25 minutes; you get terrific clarity as you watch Elton at a red piano with his band knocking out such hits as "Bennie & The Jets;" "Candle In The Wind" and "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" all with great videos playing on a giant screen behind Elton and the other performers. The bonus videos include an awesome "I'm Still Standing;" "Your Song" and "Tinderbox." "Tinderbox" boasts great special effects, too.
The liner notes include great art work and you get the full lyrics to each and every song on the CD. There is a retrospective essay about Elton and his career as well.
Elton John is a living legend. Long after most "celebrities" have been buried and forgotten, people will still remember Elton John. Elton John possesses a singular talent for making people happy and letting them feel their sorrow through his songs. When Elton sings, you listen--and you listen closely, too, because Elton makes every syllable count as he emphasizes the exact sounds he wishes to emphasize for the right effect. We are immensely better off for Elton's sharing his genius with us; and I believe that his career will continue well into the future.
Yes, perhaps Elton's fans will consider the Australian version of the CD/DVD set as one reviewer suggests they do. Regardless of which version you choose, however, you're going to have a fantastic show! Diehard Elton John fans may even want to get both editions.
Elton's fans will consider this a "must-have" for their collections; and people who enjoy great rock and pop will appreciate this CD/DVD package, too.
Rock on, rocket man!
Australian version may be better (depending on your taste).......2007-04-06
Now back to this new release to mark Elton's 60th birthday:
A search of different websites around the world shows different track listings. I think the UK listing is close to Australia's but UK contains some tracks which were minor hits. Fortunately Australia has removed those and added key tracks like "Blue Eyes" and "Don't go breaking my heart". The US edition isn't bad either but I'll put my money on the Australian version, see below:
Australian tracklisting:
1. Bennie And The Jets
2. Philadelphia Freedom
3. Daniel Gus Dudgeon
4. Rocket Man
5. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
6. Tiny Dancer Gus Dudgeon
7. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
8. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
9. Candle In The Wind

Superb British Edition of Elton John's Greatest Hits.......2007-04-02
A bonus DVD contains ten videos, most notably five never released live concert performances from his Las Vegas-based "Red Piano" shows ("Bennie & The Jets", "Rocket Man", "Candle In The Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Your Song") and four videos for three of his greatest hits from his post-1976 body of work ("I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", "I'm Still Standing", "I Want Love") and the forthcoming single "Tinderbox" from the "The Captain and The Kid". I think this special CD/DVD set is worth getting simply for the videos, especially of the live "Red Piano" performances, featuring Sir Elton and his current Elton John Band: musical director and guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Bob Birch, keyboardist Guy Babylon, drummer Nigel Olsson and percussionist John Mahon (Both Johnstone and Olsson were members of the original Elton John Band.). And I say this simply because Elton has been blessed in having with his current band, the best group of musicians who've played with him, with the exceptions of course of both percussionist Ray Cooper and the late Dee Murray, the band's original bassist. This special two-disc set will surely please countless fellow Elton John fans and demonstrate why he still remains one of our most important singer-songwriters. If nothing else, this set demonstrates the timeless quality of Elton's most popular hits, which will remain enduring classics of pop and rock music.
