5 out of 5 stars The Material Girl Living In A Material World.......2003-04-24

After the release of her second album, Like A Virgin, Madonna was onto big things. It went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide and produce massive worldwide hit singles. Along with Michael Jackson, Madonna was undoubtedly the most famous pop star on the planet. Millions of teenage girls wanted to be like her, and all the boys fancied her - a trend that has repeated itself throughout music since with artists such as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. The second single to be released from Madonna's second album was Material Girl. It peaked at No.3 in the UK in March 1985 and spent 10 weeks on the chart.

Material Girl opens with a traditional early-Madonna beat. It is very catchy, but all this is forgotten when Madonna begins her irresistible singing. "Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me, I think they're OK. If they don't give me proper credit, I just walk away" wails Madonna on the song's first line. It's a dominant and clear line that represents a powerful female in control of her career. Madonna was certainly that. The song builds up to its fantastic chorus and carries on with the second verse before another chorus hits. We then get Madonna's many male admirers singing "Living in a material word!" in their deep-tone voices. Madonna then takes over, before letting the men carry on. The song now has a very slow, dreamy bit when Madonna seems to drift off into Material Land before coming back to finish off the song in fabulous style.

The video to Material Girl is definitely one of Madonna's most famous. She was being compared a lot to Marilyn Monroe in 1985, so Madonna decided to embrace this and re-enact the famous steps scene from Marilyn's classic Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Dressed in her flowing pink gown and jewellery, she dances around the pink steps with her many male admirers. The most famous scene has to be where the men form a walk way for the star to parade down as they cover her in gifts. Overall, Material Girl is better than the song Like A Virgin in my opinion and while it might not be as famous, it certainly is very near to being so. The two songs are undoubtedly Madonna's most famous early-80's hits, and will stand the test of time.

4 out of 5 stars Philharmonic Madonna.......2006-06-17

Who knew that an orchestral interpretation of Madonna's hits could be this amusing? It was outright fun listening to these songs.

If only they made new arrangements to the songs and did not just stick too much to the original versions, that would have been the best!

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool & Interesting CD.......2000-08-08

Ok, I admit....I'm one of those Madonna fans who wants everything to do with her, and this CD is no different. I can say, however, that I was pleasantly surprised by this album.

The RPO plays Madonna's music very well and I was all alone whilst listening to it, and I found myself singing along without noticing (and plus...there are no lyrics on here, so that's a testement at how close things are.)

So get the CD and throw a Madonna karaoke party, it'll be excellent!

5 out of 5 stars The Pros Play Madonna.......2000-07-08

I thought that they sounded pretty good, the only thing I did'n like about it is that they used Orchastra insurments, they should of used Electronic ones for the New Millenium

5 out of 5 stars Simply Irresistable!!!.......2000-03-29

I am a huge Madonna fan, and I loved this CD! It is beautifully arranged and conducted. All of the songs are breathtaking, and I would recommend this CD to anyone!

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the RPO's standard.......1999-06-16

I like many of Madonna's songs, and also the orchestral music, and I'm a fan of the RPO also. I bought this CD with hope to hear something better than those of tracks on the CD. For me, this time the RPO had poorly done its job.

5 out of 5 stars Much, much better than the original versions.......2002-03-26

The songs made famous by Madonna re-recorded by women who can actually sing...What a concept!

1 out of 5 stars Uninteresting and Unoriginal.......2000-11-23

It's always fun to hear another artist's take on some of your favorite songs by your favorite artist. But when the remake is nothing more than another artist performing a song EXACTLY the way it was in the original, I find that boring. That's exactly what I didn't like about this album. While the performances aren't altogether bad, I was hoping for something more along the lines of the "Virgin Voices" album, in which well-known artists put a completely different spin on some of Madonna's greatest hits (imagine, KMFDM doing Material Girl!). Instead, I was disappointed and left feeling like I was listening to a night of bad Madonna karaoke.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing to come out of Portland OR.......2001-03-16

Well, first let me say that since I live in Seattle I can't see Betty Already every show. I've only seen them twice. Once in Seattle and once in Portland (which had me call in sick the next day) which is why I have two of these CDs. One is at work and one is at home... You think I'm joking but I'm not just ask Miz Kitty. Anyway if there is any problem with the CD it is that it's too short. That's it, nothing else... well maybe more pictures of Miz Kitty in the liner notes. This is what rock is all about. None of that rock/rap that you hear a lot of plus Scott and Murphy know how to do more than just the same powercord over and over again like ohhhh every band on MTV. Postman's drumming is pretty solid too, knowing when to put a fill in and when not to which is something that new drummers should take notes on. Icky Boom does a good job on the bass and should get more credit for his talent. You can actually hear his sound instead of confuse it for a guitar. (Some people don't care for that but if you want to sound like you're playing guitar then just play it). As for Miz Kitty? Well we have to save the best for last. Her vocals match Scott's style and they compliment each other perfectly. I would say she is the Northwest's answer to Shirly Manson. It's also fun to watch her dance on stage. If you really like music that is original and not spoonfed to you buy record labels that create bands and music (like boy bands and Static X, Incubus etc etc) then you should check this album out. You owe it to yourself and when they become the next hot thing you can say you were into them near the beginning.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Debut for Betty Already.......2001-03-02

One of Portland, OR's up-and-coming bands, Betty Already's debut CD, "Amerimaniacs", gives us a taste of their particular brand of power punk/pop. Full of high-energy tracks and a guy/girl singing duo consisting of Miz Kitty and Scott, Betty reminds us that rock is supposed to be fun, even while they attack topics like America's tendency toward materialism in songs such as "Amerimaniacs" and "Must Be Hard". Backed by the incredible drumming of the Postman and bassist Icky Boom, who is no one-note wonder, and given melody by guitarist Murphy, the CD shows that music doesn't have to be perfectly produced to be worth listening to. It's just too bad the disc can't capture the energy and craziness they put forth live - this is definitely a band best experienced in the flesh.

        5 out of 5 stars Amerimaniacs.......2001-03-02

You know how you hear a CD and you can't stop your head and feet and hips and lips from moving? This is one of those.... you want to beat everything. Add lyrics that challenge their own conventions, and some that just nail IT, and this is a CD that crosses the classic line -- party music, or listening music? It's both. It's killer guitar. And vocals. And the best pig art on the cover, ever. Get it.
