One of country's fastest-rising acts, Sugarland arrive at their follow-up to 2004's triple-platinum Twice the Speed of Life in a considerably altered state. Chief songwriter and founding member Kristen Hall is gone, and producer Garth Fundis (Trisha Yearwood) has been usurped in favor of crossover hitmaker Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill). One could argue that these are the predictable results of success--by opening for such megastars as Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn, the Atlanta-based trio was forced to retool its organic, singer-songwriter, folk-rock sound to fill arenas. And while their intricate vocal harmonies added a subtle creative dimension to their debut, Enjoy the Ride is made up mostly of songs ("County Line," "Mean Girls") constructed to showcase lead singer Jennifer Nettles's big voice in ways the previous album did not. While the repertoire was written by Nettles and surviving partner Kristian Bush in collaboration with proven songsmiths Bobby Pinson, Lisa Carver, and Tim Owens, much of the wistful intimacy of the first album is now diminished. Furthermore, it seems foolish to now call this act a duo, as Bush receives very little time in the spotlight apart from his vocal harmonies and performance on guitar and mandolin. None of this should matter on the charts, however, since the real focus was always on Nettles, whose twangy, force-field soprano more than carries the day. As before, the lyrics are upbeat and positive--if the message of the first album was of flight and searching, the theme here is of digging in. The winsome Nettles does a fine job of selling it all, positioning herself as the Ambassador of Optimism, the Deep South successor to Jo Dee Messina. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Sugarland, with the help of producer Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack), deliver the same ferocity on Enjoy The Ride. From the catchy coming-of-age kick-off single and chart-topping "Want To," to the reflective rocker "County Line" and the hopelessly optimistic "One Blue Sky," the combination of Jennifer's powerhouse country-soul voice with Kristian's passionate harmonies and deep-rooted musicality hits home, even if these two road veterans, each with a decade of club experience behind them, hardly ever see theirs. "If we can't go home, we do in our minds," Kristian explains of their songwriting process, which on this record, includes collaborations with country artist Bobby Pinson ("Want To"), Brad Paisley's co-writer Tim Owens ("Settlin'"), old pal Jeff Cohen ("April Showers") and Nashville local Lisa Carver ("One Blue Sky," "Everyday America," "County Line," "These Are The Days"). "There's a sense of nostalgia," Jennifer continues. "You pull from the time when you were figuring out who you are as a person. Like in 'Want To,' it's not only a story of falling in love, it's about that moment or a choice that could change your life. And with 'County Line,' it's about a place where you have your first kiss or get in a fight or talk about football and that time when you felt most free."

5 out of 5 stars If you buy it, you may become Sugerland's addicted !.......2007-07-28

First time I heard Sugarland was in an MTV HD special with Bon Jovi. I decided then to purchase this CD. Nice songs, well interpreted by the Sugarland group.

1 out of 5 stars Annoying voice from an over-rated woman........2007-07-16

Sugarland is one of the worst country bands ever produced. Frontwoman Jennifer Neetles has one of the most cringe worthy voices ever! That stupid song, Everyday America is completely dreadful and that over-played, Settlin' should have never seen the light of day. If you want to listen to bad country/pop music then Enjoy the Ride is just for you, but if you want a great listenable country album then check out Miranda Lambert's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Lambert actually has some talent!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Ride.......2007-07-05

This cd has a few great songs but they seem to blend together by the end of the cd! Not as exciting as I thought...

5 out of 5 stars Nettles is a Legend in the Making.......2007-05-23

In today's cookie-cutter music industry that is full of over-produced and studio-pastuerized songs, it is vital to have a unique tone and style that makes you immediately-identifiable on the radio. At the core, I am a Rock musician, yet I appreciate a variety of music styles when performed and recorded well. Sugarland entered the scene as a "hip" Country act and knocked us (the audience) into a full-on smile! While they have been admirable and impacting as a group, it truly IS Jennifer's voice that is a huge selling point as a member of the band. When she sings, you immediately KNOW that it is HER! Many musicians just DREAM of having a instantly-recognizeable style that people will love! Miss Nettles is THERE! Furthermore, just about ANYTHING Country that she sings is gonna sound great because of her deep Southern accent and her unique vibrato and determined energy. How many OTHER Country artists have had a hit single with Jon Bon Jovi? It is hard to NOT like Jennifer Nettles, unless you don't like Country music AT ALL!! 'Nuff said!!!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Ride by Sugarland.......2007-05-20

I loved the CD. I think Sugarland gets better with ever CD released. Would recommend almost every song on the Cd.

Warren Zevon died in 2003, a year after learning he had an inoperable form of lung cancer. He took that year to wrap up loose ends, recording a moving coda to his up and down collection of albums, while being heralded by legions of admirers. This 14-song tribute to the singer-songwriter, coming out a year after his passing, allows for a cooler assessment of his gifts and, guess what? He was one hell of a songwriter. One part fierce rocker, one part slightly abashed sentimentalist, Zevon's lyrical arsenal included humor, sentiment, menace, and general weirdness, all of which he mixed and matched in wild ways. The early hits "Lawyers, Guns and Money" (done here by the Wallflowers) and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (recreated by Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt) turn bravado on its ear with witty self-deprecation. Pete Yorn's take on a later gem, "Splendid Isolation," captures Zevon's gift for leftfield pathos, while Jill Sobule's whispered "Don't Let Us Get Sick" allows one to bask in Zevon's hardboiled sensitivity; he wanted to allow his spirit to show, but he didn't want to get stupid about it. This compilation from his last record label was co-produced by Zevon's son, Jordan (who performs a previously unheard number, "Studabaker") and longtime cohort Jorge Calderon (who movingly recreates Zevon's so-long song, "Keep Me in Your Heart"). The duo bring together the likes of Bob Dylan, the Pixies, Steve Earle, and Bruce Springsteen to tip their hats to an artist who's songs deserve to live on for decades after his death. --Steven Stolder

3 out of 5 stars Never follow an act that's better than yours........2007-06-17

A long time ago I learned this lesson the hard way (a story not worth the telling, btw). This isn't to suggest that the artists on this tribute album aren't as good as Warren Zevon; that's hardly the case and it's not the point. It's that some of the performances add nothing that Zevon hadn't already nailed. A lot of style gets applied, which is sufficient for covering a lot of other artists' material. But if you're going to cover a Warren Zevon song, you'd better have something real to bring to the table.

Happily, there are several good performances here, and even the few that should have been quickly euthanized seem to be products of simple vanity, here rendered sweet and forgiveable by purity of motive. It seems clear that these acts all share a genuine fondness for Warren and/or the songs themselves. Still, it perplexes me that some people who can appreciate music of such rare quality and intelligence can be so blind to their own inability to add anything to it.

Best of the bunch: "Studebaker" - Jordan Zevon (sounds like he learned to sing listening to his dad and Jackson Browne); "Searching for a Heart" - Don Henley; "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" - Jackson Browne/Bonnie Raitt/Waddy Wachtel.

Not sure what they were thinking: "The Wind" - Billy Bob Thornton (I could understand the "Sling Blade" guy better than this vocal); the Wallflowers - not bad I guess, but they make a good argument that Warren spoiled "Lawyers, Guns and Money" for everyone else and it should never again be attempted by anyone; the Pixies - you can't out-Zevon Zevon in a Zevon song, where his attitude will always be badder than yours.

So it's not necessarily that Warren Zevon is a hard act to follow. It's that his songs are a hard act to follow. If you're going to cover one, leave your stylings at home and bring your cojones instead.

Anyway, I definitely recommend the record. A lot of the material is worthwhile, and even with the stuff that isn't so good, the songwriting itself still manages to shine through.

5 out of 5 stars a great CD.......2007-03-10

This is a fantastic CD. There are at least 5 songs on this album that I treasure, several of which I hadn't heard in either the original or the covered version. Having lost a parent recently, the nature of the tribute also struck a personal chord. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Meaningful Songs.......2007-01-06

What usually happens is that the first rendition one listens and grows with is the one he loves best. For me it worked otherwise. Contrary to what another reviewer said, Zevon's interpretations of his own songs did not grab me. Ok, I was curious to see what he is about only because Dylan had expressed his admiration for him. And incidentally the inclusion in this cd of a Dylan interpretation was the reason I bought it. Yet the covers 'grabed' me indeed. Arguably the songs are nice, mostly expressing a solitary mood which suits me at this period of time. Moreover there is a uniform style in all the interpretations, so although there are some songs I like best I don't use this record to listen just to them but I go through it from start till end. Now, do they really bring out anything new or anything better? Not being I real Warren Zevon fan I cannot have an opinion, yet the fact remains that this cd is more enjoyable to me than his greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2007-01-03

This is a nice collection for die hard fans and for people new to his music. It's a good blend of famous and obscure Zevon songs. "My Ride's Here" by Bruce Springsteen is worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars hit and miss.......2006-12-16

The songs are great, but if you are in the market for this disk you already know that. So how about the interpretations and performances? Well, with a few exceptions the performances are fine. But something about the interpretations didn't really grab me.

There were a few cuts on this disk that were just outstanding and a few that just didn't really work for me. But for most of them I just wondered what the point was. They didn't really bring out anything new, and certainly didn't bring out anything better.

I guess this is what happens with most tribute anthologies, but I had hoped for something different. For what it's worth, I think my favorite cuts are those by Springsteen and Zevon (the younger).

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14

I was first introduced to Miss Russell in 1980 by fellow musicians in Rochester NY. We spent late nights after rehearsals secretly listening and laughing ourselves sick. She had the ability to put us and our conductor in our places and made us like it! Miss Russell clearly understood opera, live concert events, touring and all aspects of the music of the world. Parts of this album were recorded in New York City USA and parts in Johannesburg South Africa. It makes no difference where the audience is, the language and experience is universal and we all laugh together. Undressed bagpipes, ears turning into gardenias, the lament for the fat ladies, and "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud" presented in the singular voice of a "ruined opera singer" are irresistible.

The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.

I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars A classic above all classics.......2000-03-17

From the velvet-voiced music reviewer herself, Anna Russell has laid many a sour note. This in itself, is what makes her so funny. She takes greater pains to sound bad as most other singers do to sound good. And the best thing about this, and all of her recordings in general is that you will never tire of them, no matter how much you play them... From those before her or after her in the musica funnia farma (P.D.Q. Bach, Victor Borge, Florence Foster Jenkins, etc.), it is in this venue of music appreciation (or as some say, depreciation), that will bring newer fans to the classical arena...

5 out of 5 stars Funny and scathingly true.......1999-10-29

Highly recomended listening for the serious classical music enthusiast who enjoys a good laugh!

This entertained my kids 8, 4 and 4 for our 6 hour drive to Disneyland. Fun songs!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-04-18

I originally purchased this album after listening to the mp3 of Scurvy. I am now a fan. Every song on this album is fabulous. Although I can't say which song I like the best (I like four or five "the best"), I can say that if you are interested in a fun jaunt into silliness -- this is the CD for you! Although I originally thought that this was a recording only for young children, I'm finding that I too laugh along whenever I hear a really robust HAR-Har-Har!!! I just purchased Captain Bogg and Salty's second CD - "Pegleg Tango", and although it is good in it's own right, "Bedtime Stories for Pirates" seems more classically piratical.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Trade Winds to Ye All!.......2005-03-24

I just finished writing a review for their CD "Pegleg Tango" and realized that this CD needs its fair share as well!

Again, AWESOME! This CD is great fun with its ingenious dialog scripting and sound effects, as well as fantastic vocal harmonizing. The songs are catchy and fun and even as a parent, I find myself singing along! My children (boys 3 & 5) LOVE the song "Scurvy" and laugh each time they hear Salty say "Bunny rabbits!". My personal favorite is "Billy Bones", a wonderfully clever and very creative sea tale and song.

Check out their website at www.eatalime.com.

Great fun - Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids, Great for adults!.......2005-03-02

This is one fun CD and a great band. I have to admit that I bought this CD for myself after catching the band play live. After my son was born, I started playing it for him and was not surprised to see that he loves it too. Now that he is over a year old, he is dancing to it and it won't be long before the singing starts. The album is well crafted and takes you on a journey with stories and music. As you listen, it's not hard to imagine yourself on the deck of a pirate ship with the wind in your hair and surrounded by your loyal crewmates. Most children's CDs drive me mad, especially after repeated playing. This one gets better and better every time I hear it and that is a good thing since it gets played every single day. Har!

5 out of 5 stars ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!.......2005-02-22

This duo is among my favorite acts out there in entertainment today. Both Captain Bogg and Salty are great on there own as they've both headlined stadium tours, but put them together and you have magic. I have a tough time getting my toddler to lay down for a nap, but have you ever tried getting pirates to sleep? I'll tell you it ain't easy. Pirates are kind of hard to control because they are constantly looking for booty. They wear weird clothes and say ARRRRRGGGHHHH and Matees all of the time. Frankly, they are a bit annoying. T-Rex(J Abs) and I went out clubbing with a bunch of pirates we know and it just didn't work out. Chicks don't dig the pegleg and the fact that pirates don't bathe nearly enough. Blueballbeard kept going up ladies and telling them to walk his plank. He would follow that up by farting and saying ARRRRRRRGGHHHHH. It really ruined our chances. That and the fact J Abs has tiny T-Rex arms AND talks like a pirate pretty much meant I wasn't getting any. So take my advice and don't go clubbing with pirates or friends with tiny dinosaur arms that also talk like pirates.

5 out of 5 stars my daughter loves this!.......2006-07-19

My 7 year old daughter loves this CD! So do all her friends. She listens all the time and it is our favorite sing along for the car. Of course, as an adult I like the real Beatles the best...but I was pleasantly surprised at how good these kids versions are. I don't understand all the "how dare they do this with the Beatles" stuff that some people blabber about. For me it works...my daughter loves it and now seems more interested in my other Beatles CDs, AND I much prefer hearing this over and over again versus some of the other kids music we have.

3 out of 5 stars Not better than The Beatles.......2006-07-14

The songs are supposedly sung by kids, but some of them are sung so similarly to the originals that it's hard to tell. Not that it's BAD that the songs are similar, it's just that, well, it's just not an improvement to the real Beatles, so why not just get a CD of the Beatles. I also bought Beatles 1 at the same time, and my 2 yr old loves listening to it. Get that instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kids Music CD!.......2005-10-13

This is the best kids music CD we own. All three of my kids (ages 1 through 7) love listening to it. The best part of it is that I enjoy it too. Of course I have all the original Beatles records, but this CD does such a great job of introducing the kids to this music that it's fun for me and my husband too. Like another reviewer said, my kids weren't interested in the real Beatles recordings before. But after listening to this for a while, they are starting to enjoy both - The Bingo version and the originals. What a great idea. What a great album. I wish they would do the same with other groups. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars A gateway to the Beatles.......2005-09-11

This cd is a good introduction to the Beatles. While the original recordings of these songs are my preference, that wasn't the case with my two year old. She didn't take to the originals. So these versions provided the necessary gateway to the originals. The songs are recreated very faithfully, but with children singing most of the chorus'. This was what was needed to create the interest for my child. After a few weeks of listening a seamless transition to the "#1's" was accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2005-04-22

I love this album. My kids love to listen to both the original Beatles and these versions. They especially love to listen to other kids singing! These versions seem to be made with the highest quality in mind and with respect for the orignal versions. After we got this album my children were dancing around and singing along. They request it over and over and the nice part is that it is also great for my wife and I to listen to (more so than other kids albums like The Wiggles). I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars it was a gift, so..........2006-07-14

This is a hard to find cd. It was a gift for my son. He is thrilled with it. I do enjoy the song, Azwethinkweis (sp).

5 out of 5 stars very enjoyable.......2004-12-03

This is my favorite release out of all of Incubus' older stuff. This only being 6 tracks I was left wanting more though. But I digress. This is a great CD from the beginning to the end. I love the way they mix funk with metal, I could've never imagined that those two styles would be so amazing together. All of the songs on here are excellent, Version being my personal favorite. Version is a very funky song, which goes from jazzy singing to chaos in seconds. The message of the song is really very empowering too. Azwethinkweiz is another funky jazzy trip. The lyrics are the thing that stand out in this song, as cool as the instruments sound the lyrics are what get me every time. Shaft is an extremely heavy song which has Brandon screaming through the chorus (I could be wrong on that though, I've seen a video where Dirk Lance was the one screaming). You Will Be A Hot Dancer is a jazzy combo with very humerous lyrics. The instrumentation is what I like a lot about this song though. Take Me To Your Leader is amazing. I absolutely love this song, the lyrics are witty, and the beat is tantilizing. Nothing beats a song that mentions a cucumber in it. Finally, Hilikus, a very intelligent song that I really like. However, this is not a favorite of mine, although it is a really great way to end this CD.

A few of the best songs are Take Me To Your Leader, Version, and Azwethinkweiz. This is really overall a little bit better than Fungus Amongus in my opinion. I really do think that everybody will find something about this CD that tickles their buttons, so I reccommend this to everybody.

4 out of 5 stars You Will Enjoy Incubus.......2004-02-02

The first track "You Will Be A Hot Dancer" had me singing along with it's catchy tune and unforgettable chorus. "Shaft" is a great hard rock song with an amazing Primus like sound. "Take Me To Your Leader" grew on me like no other song has done before. It is now one of my favorite songs. It has very unusual lyrics ("What if I had a mustard drenched cucumber tied to my leg and I did not want my pants to get dirty"), but very interesting none the less because some things he sings are actual facts ("What if your brain unexpectedly and suddenly picked out things to flip around and view"). mattcarrot has offended me with his opinion of the song "Version." I believe it is one of the best song's on this album. It happens to be the only Incubus song with a reggae, ska like groove. "Azwethinkweiz" happens to be one of two songs that Incubus released on a hard to find record entitled Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout Root Beer (The other is "New Skin" which is found on the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album). It's also a very good song. "Hilikus" has a kickin' groove, as any Fungus Amongus fan would know. If you fast forward past the end of the song, you will find a hidden track with different beats and grooves similar to the secret track at the end of S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. Enjoy Incubus is a true title to this album for any hardcore Incubus fan because if you are a hardcore Incubus fan you will enjoy this album and appreciate Incubus' diversity and roots.

5 out of 5 stars You'll have to hear it to believe it..........2003-08-24

I know Incubus from Make Yourself, their hit album.
Then I started listening to their older CD's and the more I travled back in time, it got better.
Incubus had great sound at start, very diffrent from their music nowdays.
On this CD, which is not their first one, they are taking some tracks from their first record, Fungus Amongus, and record them again with DJ Lyfe, who joined them at that time.
The result is wounderfull. DJ Lyfe additions conribute to the Jazz/Funk/Metal sound of the band and make the songs sound even better then Fungus Amongus.

As bland as white bread. It is a misrepresentation to link this series of 3 CDs in any way to the Buddha Bar CDs or the chillout music category in general. It could play in the background without anyone ever raising their head or moving their body. If your thing is New Age music this might be for you. Everyone else is forewarned.

5 out of 5 stars The Buddha-Lounge is a cosmic destination !.......2002-10-15

I bought this CD on-line initially thinking it was exclusively a Daivd & Steve Gordon title. I love their native influenced world music titles. Imagine my surprise and elation when I found out that not only did this CD contain a great track form the Gordon's but also 12 other tracks from various established and new Sequoia artists including contemporary Celtic artist Gary Stadler with amazing vocalist Stephannie and the magical music artistry of Zingaia. I was completely blown away not only by how each track of this CD is perfectly sequenced with the others but the amazing array of world -beat sounds from some incredible new artists I've never heard of before. In particular tracks #3 "Abo Daylight" from Althea W. and track #12 "Glass from Jasper" by Roedelius were extremely lush and stirring tracks. The entire CD is very upbeat and uplifting while still remaining soothing and relaxing. I find it to be great ambient music for just relaxing around the house or dancing joyously with my partner. An extremely beautiful mix of musical artists and a great CD !

"When music transcends me to a place that is magical, I truly succumb to it. I am a mother of 3 young teenagers and when I want to relax, I immediately listen to Buddha Lounge. This title has virtual lounge rhythms and techno beats that has relaxing and "smooth" sounds. It is modern mellow music integrated together. Believe me, after a very hectic day, I feel rejuvenated and revitalized after I turn my cd on to Buddah Lounge! I love it!" Jeanne/Fullerton, California

5 out of 5 stars The Buddha-Lounge is the Place to Be !.......2002-10-08

This is one of the most groovin' world beat lounge CD's I've ever laid my ears on. Each track is perfectly situated into the overall mix of these 13 tracks from a variety of hot new European artists including Roedelius, Alquima, Marcator, Peter Merenger and others as well as the best new tracks from top selling Sequoia artists including David & Steve Gordon, Gary Stadler with amazing new celtic singing sensation Stephannie and a hot new track from Zingaia. The overall effect of this dancable world-beat title absolutley is hypnotic. It's great to slip on the headphones and drift into it or as ambient for your next smart-drink cocktail party. Each track expertly blends a spiritual vibe with techo world-beat grooves to produce a consciousness exhalting and joyful musical celebration. The Buddha-Lounge really is the place to be !

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars "Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.
