Mixtapes tend to be a hit and miss thing/ You have some songs you don't like, but it's usually just snippets, so it's cool. Then you have songs you love, but the snippet factor makes it less appealing. The album starts rightfully with a DJ Spinbad intro, he is a good, underrated DJ. Then it goes into a Killa Priest song, I tend to usually not like him, but out of the WU people he is easily the best. This song is nice, the beat thumps and the lyrics are saying something. Next it goes into this cat HOM, who drops a 16 bar Lyricist Lounge Promo. All I can say is this kid is rediculiously sick on the mic. The track is butter without him, he kills it. I hadn't heard of HOM before this, but I will be checking for him indeed. Scheme Team blesses next, the track is above avarage, and Gean Gray sounds lovely as always. There are simply too many songs on here to break them all down. But it has a lot of definite stand outs, there are some snoozers, but what can you expect? "Rise & Shine" have one of the most buttery songs I've ever heard, too bad it's only a small portion. Mystic's track is incredible, it should have been on her album. Something I found interesting about this release,
it doesn't have too many of the super abstract emcees usually thought of when you think "underground" it's a nice collection of skilled cats. Some you probably never heard of, with 30 tracks you'll find something here you love, probably most of it (I know I did) Marc Ecko is known for having one of the freshest clothing lines ever, and since day one of Ecko Unlimited he has combined urban music to complement his urban cloths. A perfect blend. I can't wait for Underground Airplay version 2.0

5 out of 5 stars The 'Bomb'.......2002-05-23

I live in England and found this c.d in a small record shop. This is without doubt the best Hip-Hop Album I have ever listened to,every tune is spot on, my favourites are the tracks by Mystic,Hieroglyphics and Moss-Def but they all rock...Big time. Every single tune is a party song so without question this is a must have for any Hip-Hop fan.

3 out of 5 stars Subpar - Bland and often boring.......2002-05-24

I love DJ Revolution. I have ever since I heard him on Sway and Tech's "This or That". Rev's "In 12's We Trust" is one of my all time favorite CDs, yet this work really left me feeling empty. The majority of these songs aren't very good. There's a few shining moments, basically just a few good one liners here and there that made me rewind. Chief Kamachi, Planet Asia, Esoteric & 7L are their usual good selves. Besides the first cut by Bumpy Knucks (Freddie Foxxx for those that don't know) and the song by Big L -- both of which I had heard already on other CDs, no real big name artists had anything to say. Dilated Peoples really disappointed me, as did Kool Keith (Dr. Dooom), Royce and Em, Rasco and Self Scientific.
I expected more from these artists and DJ Revolution than this bland hardcore compilation. The whole CD is rather boring with only a few good bars and even fewer (2) good actual songs. A good example of this, is some cat I had never heard of, Insane Poetry, who dropped the best example of being really tripped up on the hook to his "Shroom Vision", "I can see three of you\ But you can't see me". I'm going to have to check this dude out, he has potential, unlike some of these other artists featured here that sound like carbon copies of the same old stuff.
As I said this CD is average and only worth your money if you have a lot of it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition to anyone's collection.......2000-09-15

I was looking around my cd store, found this gem, thought the cover art was cool, and so bought it. On the way back from the store, I remember thinking, "I shouldn't have bought that just for a cool cover...what a waste of money..." Then I got home and gave it a spin on my stereo, just to see what it was like. Since that moment it's been my absolute favorite rap album. The most perfect mix of hip-hop I've ever heard...goes from hardcore and gangsta to just good. If there's a type of rap you like, I guarantee it's on this cd. Get it.

4 out of 5 stars Welcom to the R2K virus............2000-04-17

This cd was sort of an accident for me. I picked it up, thinking it was a techno cd (no offense to DJ revolution), and was a tad surprised at the content. I am however, a fan on hip hop, and this was the first mix I had ever heard. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it, and now it hardly leaves my cd player. DJ Revolution does an amazing job behind the tables, creating is own mix with various sample, both off of vinyl and electronic, and he smoothly mixes each song with effortless ease. This mix has an excelent feel to it, and it displays a bit of the underground style of hip hop. Some of my favorit tracks are track 2 (Part of my Life: Bumpy Knuckles), track 9 (Reign: Dr.oop Capone), and track 14 (Scary Movies: Bad meets evil (Eminem and Royce the 5-9). If you're looking for a good mix, and in the mood for some interesting style, hook this one up. Gauranteed to please.

5 out of 5 stars DJ Revolution Forever........2000-03-25

Got to add this CD into your colletion. A classic underground album. Worth getting for real hip hop fans. Go cop this one.

5 out of 5 stars By Far a Great Album...........2000-02-16

DJ Revolution cuts it up in this constant attack of high octane lyrics from great hip hop artists and magnificent beats off da vinyl. DJ Revolution (also with Wake Up Show) is by far one great dj...one ot be ranked with the best such as Q-Bert, A-Trak, and Kut Masta Kurt.

The Bach renaissance--which began in earnest in the early 19th century thanks to the efforts of Felix Mendelssohn and others--inspired an endeavor of far-reaching significance. It led to the founding of the Bach Society in 1850, with the goal of gathering and publishing the composer's complete works, and thus set into motion one of the great projects of musical scholarship. That effort has continued and been refined throughout the 20th century, ultimately influencing not only our perception of how to perform early music but fundamental ideas of musical history, evolution, and reception as well.

Teldec's mammoth Bach 2000 box set represents a kind of culmination of that original attempt to come to terms with Johann Sebastian Bach's unparalleled legacy. This set brings together performances recorded over the last several decades--a small percentage of the recordings are previously unreleased--of all the extant works determined by modern scholarship to be authentic. There are also some pieces the authorship of which is still in question and a few now deemed "inauthentic" but familiarly associated with the composer. Bach was a prodigious reviser of his compositions, and alternate versions of a particular work have been included "where the changes seemed sufficiently important," such as the glorious Magnificat. No doubt manuscripts will continue to be unearthed here and there in various archives (Bach 2000 contains, for example, the "Neumeister chorales," which were rediscovered in 1984), but the set does not represent the many fragments of music that consist of just a few bars; however, there are some reconstructions of lost concertos (such as one for three violins reconstructed by Christopher Hogwood from an extant concerto for harpsichords).

Of course a truly comprehensive recorded edition of every note Bach wrote remains a utopian impossibility--about one-third of his cantatas, for example, have not survived. Even so, the dimensions of Bach 2000 are staggering. With its 12 boxes comprising 153 CDs, the set can be compressed into fewer boxes to save shelf space yet is still about ten times as long as the Ring cycle. (It should be noted that the packaging--using thin cardboard sleeves for the CDs--is distinctively unattractive.) That adds up to just under 160 hours of music--but a lifetime of discovery. Each box (grouped according to genre) contains a booklet with excellent notes on individual works and--for all the choral works--texts and translations. Tracking indexes are useful and thorough. Also included is a profusely illustrated hardbound volume of 24 Inventions, in which journalist Wolfgang Sandberger uses the composer's biography as a peg for some enigmatic and fascinating musings on the meaning of Bach today.

The presiding philosophy behind this project and its approach to musical interpretation can be largely ascribed to Nikolaus Harnoncourt, a true musical pioneer and galvanizing force of the "period performance" movement. Harnoncourt's epoch-making recordings of the sacred cantatas (using, for instance, boy sopranos and choristers according to the practice in Bach's time) with the Concentus musicus Wien and colleague Gustav Leonhardt comprise the first four volumes here (those who already own them can turn to the Bach 2000 Light edition, which contains everything sans the cantatas). These recordings--which were not remastered for this set--have long been controversial and are notably uneven, embracing some magnificent accounts as well as others that lack fire and seem clearly underrehearsed. But Harnoncourt is one of the most fascinating conductors of our era, and his interpretations amply bear out his assertion: "I have never felt that Bach worked in a routine manner, that he repeated himself in his works." Harnoncourt--who has articulated many of his ideas in his book The Musical Dialogue--displays his gifts as a cellist in a remarkably probing performance of the Cello Suites (originally recorded in 1965) and in his concertizing for a number of chamber works. For the St. Matthew Passion, you get Harnoncourt's groundbreaking earlier account from 1970, while his 1986 recording of the sublime B Minor Mass is also represented here (the St. John Passion included is Harnoncourt's 1995 acount).

Other artists included are colleague Gustav Leonhardt, whose thoughtful if occasionally dry harpsichord artistry is heard in the Goldberg Variations as well as in the concertos and chamber music. The harpsichord is in fact used throughout in preference to piano for the keyboard works. Ton Koopman (himself the conductor of an ongoing complete cantata series and of the Easter Oratorio included here) performs the organ works, including some newly recorded offerings, while Il Giardino Armonico's well-known high-energy account represents the Brandenburg Concertos. Violinist Thomas Zehetmair is exceptionally compelling in the unaccompanied sonatas and partitas, and the Concentus musicus Wien--again under Harnoncourt--perform a superb Musical Offering that richly repays frequent listening.

The result of Bach 2000 as a whole is an aptly encyclopedic grappling with the infinite legacy of this most compendious of composers, whose works are on one level a summation of all the styles available to him. Bach was once thought to represent a "terminal point" (to use Albert Schweitzer's famous formulation), the end of an era; today he is at least equally recognized as a fertile source of inspiration for composers since. To be sure, individual recordings of particular works will be found to be preferable, and it would be misguided to consider Bach 2000 any kind of "final" or "definitive" word. Instead, it's an indispensable starting point that represents a monumental achievement for our own contemporary understanding of Bach. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Bach is priceless.......2006-11-10

I believe, as another reviewer has stated, Bach's music may be the best ever written. Also, I think the cantatas are not where Bach placed his heart and soul. He was, after all, employed as a canter and in a position he did not wish for, but was forced to take to feed his large family. (I recommend "Bach and the High Baroque" lecture series by TTC.) What really stands out on this collection are all works in volumes 8 and above. Some of these works are hard to find and having them all in this collection and preformed on original instruments is great. Bach is priceless and so then is this collection.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the works you like...........2006-01-11

If you love Bach, which you must if you are looking at this particular item, you probably own a couple of his works already. Perhaps some of them are on the Teldec label. There is nothing wrong with Teldec if you are just getting into "classical" music. You will probably enjoy the music thoroughly. I know I did, as one of the first "classical" releases I bought was on Teldec, and it was Bach. I was amazed how great Bach was. Then my brother showed me the same recording, performed by another group, on another label. It had a lot more passion, and the instrumentalists were obviously of a higher level. Pardon my rambling, but what I'm trying to say is, the recordings found in this boxset are not the "cream of the crop." They are perfectly acceptable, easily listenable renditions of what many consider the greatest music...EVER. Take it from me, someone who has leapt into boxset land one too many times: Save your money, buy the individual albums. Take your time, talk to record store clerks (read Amazon reviews), do your research. If you are lucky enough to have a decent record store around, listen to multiple versions of the same work. No one said you had to buy it all at once. It can take a lifetime to fully realize the potency of this music, so enjoy the discovery as long as possible.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Bach.......2005-11-26

In Antony & Cleopatra, Shakespeare wrote: "I shall see some squeaking Cleopatra boy my greatness...."

I am 99% in favor of original instrument performances, but there are limits. Just imagine if we had the same sort of thing going on with Shakespeare's plays -- men and boys playing all of the women's parts. And if we *really* wanted to be original, they would be squeaking boys "I' th' posture of a whore" (Shakespeare's words). Such performances would knock Monty Python
right out of business.

The Cantatas, which are the lion's share of this collection, are sung by boys, boys, boys. If you want to ruin boy choirs for yourself, then go for it. It might still be a novelty by the fifth CD but by the fiftieth, you will want to throw your &*%$ wig at the squeaking speakers, just as the exasperated Bach famously did with his own wig and his own boy choir. (For which he was reprimanded.)

Does Harnoncourt really, honestly think that Bach would have picked a boy choir if he could have had women? Does anyone seriously believe that Shakespeare would have preferred his parts played by boys instead of women?

If you buy this set, don't buy it for the Cantatas, unless (unlike Bach) you can tolerate immature voices with "wig-tossingly" inconsistent intonation. Hold out for Suzuki or Koopman. Stay away from the Rifkin perfomances, mostly because the recording quality is second and third rate by today's standards. Not that historical performances should be shunned, but you might want to think twice about 60 odd CDs worth of second rate sound.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove.......2004-03-07

This set is the culmination of several decades of work on the part of the West German record label Teldec (formerly known as Telefunken-Decca). With their early-music subdivision Das Alte Werk (similar to DG's Archiv or Decca's L'Oiseau-Lyre), Teldec have been in the forefront of exploring the world of period instruments and authentic performance practice, with special emphasis on the works of J.S.Bach. The lion's share of recordings here was originally made for Das Alte Werk, with the odd exception here and there licensed from other labels in order to fill in the gaps. The centerpiece of the set is the famous recording of the 199 church cantatas by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt. If you're not familiar with the cantatas, there's a whole world of drama, color and expression right here waiting for you. You'll also be surprised to learn how many of the "tunes" you know from popular arrangements, like "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Sleepers Awake" are actually movements from cantatas. The names of Harnoncourt and Leonhardt pop up again and again; they were both mainstays of the Teldec roster. Leonhardt gives us his 1965 Goldberg Variations on a Dulcken harpsichord whose every tone is like a bell, and Harnoncourt's "home" recording of the Cello Suites (never intended for general release) shows the ferment of a great musical mind. Ton Koopman gives us his provocative and controversial re-thinkings of the organ works, and Thomas Zehetmair's performances of the unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas are like dramatic scenes spoken by a solo violin. Here are the uniquely bizarre Brandenburg Concertos by Il Giardino Armonico; the rhetorical and transparent performance of the motets conducted by Harnoncourt (perhaps his best-ever recording); Leonhardt's relaxed and smiling versions of the harpsichord concertos; Alice Harnoncourt's tawny, leonine performances of the sonatas for violin and harpsichord; Harnoncourt's chiaroscuro-filled performance of the Christmas Oratorio, and so on. This set is one of the most worthwhile CD buys you could make. You will never be bored with this to dip into over the years.

5 out of 5 stars 147 out of 153 ain't bad!.......2001-04-29

Having listened to the complete set, I can confidently recommend it, if you would use a complete set of Bach's works.

If you really like Bach, it is well worth getting. You will read disparaging reviews which will tell you that there are better performances of individual works. But this is a great opportunity for a Bach lover to get very good versions of his entire oeuvre.

In the set of 60 CDs of sacred cantatas, there are about 6 duds, which feature out of tune boy sopranos! If you are not crazy about sacred cantatas, you can buy a set which omits them, which may be advised!

I love the version of the Mass in B minor, though it is very different from our set by Munchinger [which we really enjoy].

The Brandenburgs are great. THe first movement of the first concerto is a knock out! Very brassy and bombastic: quite different from the 3 or 4 other versions I have previously enjoyed.

We are a piano family and have many CDs of Bach keyboard works played on piano [though we also have the Well Tempered Clavier on harpsichord and clavichord] The keyboard performances in the set are all on harpsichord and are lively and very enjoyable.

It takes some getting used to the authentic Baroque flute performances: especially occasional out-of-tuneness. But these are also interesting and musically played.

If you would use a set of all of Bach's extant works, it is a great choice. It is competitively priced and I love the packaging.

With the exception of the title track, "Beat the Clock," these songs have absolutely nothing thematically to do with the impending millennium, nor is this compilation a particularly good choice if you are looking for music that is going to whip your New Year's party into a dance-floor frenzy. Too many of these tracks are blockbuster dance hits that have saturated mainstream media, from soundtracks to commercials ("Rockafeller Skank," "Busy Child," "Born Slippy"), and when 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 1999, rolls around, you'll most likely want to be listening to something a little more meaningful, or at least a little fresher. If the Y2K bug actually does cause your CD player to glitch out on the eve of the new millennium, do you really want the last song you hear to be the background music for a Gap ad? --Beth Massa

3 out of 5 stars A great find for a DJ.........2000-12-27

As a DJ, I was happy to find these rare tracks (rare on vinyl at least). I'm not sure what these other people's problem is. Though these tracks have been collaborated together before and played out in the mainstream, they are nearly all classics..

2 out of 5 stars Old Skool.......1999-12-04

These were great tracks when they came out, but what is the point in bringing a compilation out of 2 year old tracks? None of which are obscure remixes. Totally pointless album, unless you've been in outer mongolia for the last 3 years!

1 out of 5 stars Fisher-Price: My First Techno Album.......1999-10-21

What is the point of ever making this CD? I've had most of these songs for at least a year. Columbia, what are you thinking?

4 out of 5 stars Good, as far as intro compilations go.......1999-10-11

Yes, a terribly obvious collection of songs, and I pretty much program out Fatboy Slim (and the awful title track) when I play this CD. But the pacing and selection of the remaining songs are better than most comps, with Lo-Fidelity, Prodigy, Orb, Chem Bros, Crystal Method and Propellerheads all flowing together nicely. I prefer this to the other compilations with which this overlaps heavily, like MTV's Amp2. Nothing earthshattering, but decent and very danceable.

5 out of 5 stars Electronica's Best Compilation.......1999-08-09

I don't know why Amazon.Com gave this album such a negative review. All the songs kick lots of a**, especially the Propellerheads', the most underrated band in existence. Granted, it may not be the best for parties. It might not have the dance-able beats. But, sh**, who cares? And what's wrong with Gap commercials?

This is a 4-song debut EP from a new band in the Harrisburg PA area. These guys play gigs from Philly to Baltimore, and have played a headlining gig at the Hard Rock in Baltimore.

Upon first listen, I got the impression that these guys are not screwing around. Jimmy's banging style of drumming is reminiscent of the John Bonham school, but still has lots of dynamics and extended fills. As for the two-guitar line-up, Jason's "tricky stuff" (with lots of cool effects) layers perfectly with Phil's gutteral, raunchy riffs, and when they play riffs in unison, it creates a definite wall of sound. Rick's vocals are mostly sung (rather than screamed), and are full of the angst and joy that make rock music what it is. Tony T's bass supplies the rumbly, thick rock foundation upon which the structure is built.

All four songs on Version 1.0 are pretty much straight-ahead rock tunes, but each one has its own twist. The lead-off cut, "You Said", is a no-nonsense 4/4 jam with lots of grand pauses and rhythm guitar cadenzas. The last tune, "Paradise", starts with a 4/4 intro and switches to triplet feel for the verse, goes back to 4/4 for the chorus, and the bridge before the last chorus features some killer extended drum fills. The middle two tunes, "Don't ever" and "Tendencies of Me" are triplet feel songs with thick guitars that build and release dynamically throughout. "Don't Ever" has some nicely placed vocal filters, and tasty guitar work that all leads up to the full-on chorus. "Tendencies of Me" lets Rick's crystal clear vocals cut right through, and features a quiet, spooky bridge that brings everything down for the final wallop.

I have seen these guys live, and if you get a chance to see them, take it. You will be witness to a finely-tuned, all-business show that is hard to find at a club-type venue.

For\ the St.

--Thomas May --This text refers to the complete edition of this title

This extraordinary comp dizzies with its sonic riches. Clickhop Version 1.0, part of Mille Plateaux's Electric Ladyland series, contains over two hours of crazily inventive IDM. Hip-hop, house, R&B, and other dance genres get gobbled up by clicks and cuts only to be spit out in myriad and mutant funky forms. Unlikely things happen here. Archconservative Phillip Larkin's notorious poem "This Be the Verse" provides haunting lyrics for MRI3's "As a Child I Could Fly Without Wings." Track tempos vary wildly, ranging from the superslow "Rubbercement" by Errorsmith to the insanely fast "Ghost Breaks" by M. Singe. Unpredictable shifts occur. This is the sort of CD where riffs emerge out of thickets of noise, or seriously tweaked hip-hop dissolves into ambient industrial gloom. Well-known figures such as Vladislav Delay, DJ Spooky, and Kid606 contribute to the comp, but don't let the big names distract you from the album's other selections. Clickhop Version 1.0 is a perfect marriage of experimentation and wack-funky. --Fred Cisterna

      5 out of 5 stars Click-hop heaven.......2005-07-23

Possibly not recommended to serious hip-hop fans, largely because what rapping there is (not much) is pretty lame. But if you enjoy anything else on Mille Plateaux and aren't anti-hip-hop (I know some glitch diehards weren't happy with the preponderance of hip-hop/breakbeats on the last Clicks 'n' Cuts comp), this is for you. IDM/glitch can often seem - or actually be - overly academic and experimental, so it's great to hear tracks that prove you can do this style AND rock. Some of this even makes you want to dance - surely this can't be Mille Plateaux?!

With some of this stuff you'll wonder where the hip-hop influence is; I have a feeling it's really a repository for anything too funky for the Clicks 'n' Cuts series. As I said above, some purists prefer the crisp, cold, clipped sounds of early glitch; personally, I just think the greater warmth and looseness here is a sign of technology advancing and a group of musicians (yes, I do class them as musicians) technically maturing.

The glitch sound has gone beyond a few arid experiments; you can hear it throughout mainstream dance music now. This album is a collection of some of its greatest achievements, and one you'll come back to for more than historical interest. It rocks! Check out Geeez 'n' Gosh's 'Nobody Knows' for another classic of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Ladyland under the influence of Idiology........2001-11-03

Really, the more I listen to it, it's hard not to feel the ghost of Idiology possessing most of the artists here. Two discs of artists reeling from the genius of a new Idiology. This is an album refining the Mouse on Mars musical etiquette: get funky, foolish, and richly layered.
But my mistake about the Alvo.Noto track. Mr Noto Nicolai still hasn't loosened his tie, which is maybe to his credit. He's still as stiff and mathematical as ever. Alvo Noto is quick to becoming the Isaac Babel of electronic music, where the key to creating strong art is not when you can't add any more, but rather when you can't remove any thing else.

The truth is: The best track on the album is by a French Canadian (Akufen), which is maybe the first time that has ever happened in the history of music. Alors, c'est bon ca.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Pop from Mille Plateaux's Finest boy bands........2001-11-02

Fast on the clicking heels of Mille Plateaux's controversial second installment of the Clicks & Cuts series (controversial, I say, because people are so polarized by the seeming listenability of said album, and how upsetting this is to certain types of listeners who prefer their music to be painful and tragic to most other people. Like in the world of couture, it's safe to call these people Music Victims) here comes a new volume of the much lauded Electric Ladyland series. Not, as to be expected, vol. 7, but vol 0--clickhop version.

And so it goes that what we have here is the new underground of pop music. Mille Plateaux has fed its artists so much Deleuzian philosophy that they've ran flailing into the arms of NSync's 'Pop' -- and, strangely, thank god.

I liked both the Clicks & Cuts things. I liked the Electric Ladyland's that I heard. I like music. Whether or not this new clickhop EL v.O will appeal to those particular peoples who turn their nose up at anything that resembles a beat, the music here is insatiably good.

Vladislav Delay turns in a great track with vocals, Safety Scissors are amazing. M.Singe and High Priest are massive, deep-hop kings, where they tread, beware.

Thanks to an influx of money, I've been able to spend an obnoxious amount on music, and the Mille Plateaux label has continued to make me and Visa happy.

This 2 cd set is more rambunctious than maybe people expect, considering the seriousness of most of their label's output. For instance, the usually affected Alvo.Noto has a delicious track that could suit the jazzercise routines of a Mouse on Mars fan.

The only other label that is really turning my head around these days is Pole's Scape records. All their releases have been so dang interesting, especially the newest Pole, R, and Jan Jelenik's album. And then, on the Warp label, I think Brothomstates has really been an impressive debut.

But that's sort of beside the point. What I'm saying is that this newest Mille Plateaux comp. is another sweet fall release. A major Wish List item, if I ever saw one. If I wasn't a favorite client of three or four major credit card companies, and a sad boy in a cold climate, I would still be waiting to buy this baby, but as it is, I'm lucky enough to be able to tell you that it's worth your post 9/11 fluctuating world dollar.
