Gold Chains [EP]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Gold Chains music is an almost indescribable circus of sounds, bridging the gap between electro and punk, techno and glam-rock, and all the sounds within. A cult hero in the making, offering up a whole new game altogether, Gold Chains just might save us all.

Album Description

The second LP from San Francisco producer Gold Chains finds longtime collaborator Sue Cie as a permanent addition to the band. Their sometimes haunting voices tell stories of loves lost and meanings found.

4 out of 5 stars alot easier to get into than the previous.......2005-05-14

i likedthe previous album, dont get me wrong, but i only listened to about 2 or 3 of the songs off of it, over and over. this album however there are many different types of music to listen to i usually skip around, alot of the songs are good, but still again, i probably listen to 4 or 5, off the whole cd, there are a coupl i can't stand listening to, but hey its gold chains. i'm still going to buy their next album even if its more of the same.

3 out of 5 stars California love.......2005-05-11

On this sugary potpourri of hip hop, house, 2-step, and indie rock, Gold Chains raps and Sue Cie sings about love for humans and California. Few songs stand out, though, and in a world of Matthew Dears and Postal Services, stronger hooks are necessary to cut through the mix.

4 out of 5 stars this is great stuff.......2003-11-30

I really liked this cd, good beats, "Human pony girl" is my favorite song, cause of the diversity of sounds. I got this cd, because i heard a song by them on the Tigerbeat6 compilation and oh my the song that is on that compilation compared to the songs on this cd are just a little different. Short and sweet.

4 out of 5 stars ebonic karate.......2002-10-18

Straight from your Radio nearly did me in this weekend. Gold Chains invited me in for drinks, seduced me, locked the door, shoved me in a box. Seriously, that's how I felt after listening to this EP. Lemme 'splain...

My vision of the immaculate creation of Topher Lafata, the MC, lover, pimp, thug, and genius behind Gold Chains: lonely bike messenger/web programmer who devours every issue of URB sees nine-hour docu-drama on hip-hop culture. Something snaps inside of him. He downloads shareware music program and fuses new found insanity with his '80s synth-pop sensibility and lo-fi approach. The result is a world with a mythology that has me enthralled.

The disc opens with "Straight From Your Radio", a romp of alien gangsta lyrics ("10,000 years ago I invented rhyme with a couple of cobras and a Chinese chime") and a mix of hip-hop, industrial, gabber and acid beats, sliding effortlessly between shuffle and straight four-on-the-four. "I Treat Your Cootchie Like a Maze" combines a similar vocal style with musical genres that would destroy most artists' careers (Baha Men-style shouting, accordion, house beats and an industrial-style bridge). Once again, Lafata pulls it off gracefully, with tongue in cheek wit. "Let's Make It" shifts gears into full-on electroclash and a falsetto vocal that would make Beck blush. Lafata quickly returns to his pimp role on "Mountains of Coke", then finishes off with the exciting eighties synth-pop-inspired "Human Pony Girl".

I can't think of another artist who compares with Gold Chains -- and that's a good thing. Maybe the fun of Bogdan Raczynski meets Schooly D meets eighties cult band Vicious Pink. On paper this sounds like the nightmarish collage-work of a studio-bound madman. However, Gold Chains' persuasion convinces the listener that "this is how it is, yo". Lafata's eclectic mix of genres makes sense because he does it buffet-style, gleaning the surface of each rather than making a full meal of any particular style. If you love progressive hip-hop, live for laptop rock or enjoy a bit of both, Straight From Your Radio will be your new addiction of choice

    Product Description

This band is able to combine an eclectic array of influences, that are undoubtedly identifiable, into a unique sound that is original and magnetic. The name itself suggests the southern blues roots that are the most prominent ingredient in this rock n' roll concoction, but the rest of the recipe gives it a distinguished flavor. Gold Tooth comparisons include Lenny Kravitz, Soundgarden, The Black Crowes, Kings X, and Urge Overkill, all of which are proudly acknowledged by the band. Gold Chains brings it up a notch and delivers the best album on 2003. The style, lyrics and sound are innovative and unique.

4 out of 5 stars The 3rd Gold Chains album........2003-06-18

Just gave this cd the fourth listen over and I must say it is a very solid cd. A lot of good songs located on this unknown cd. If you ever get the chance, see the band live they bring even more energy to their live sets and really pump up the volume in the room.

Grab this cd, it's worth the price. Right now Gold Chains is doing their US tour after they had just finished their UK tour.

I suppose one answer is that, rather than a sell-out mix album of 'safe' tunes already in the public domain, a companion album truly reflects what actually goes on at a club night, warts and all. Trash Companion #01 does exactly this, Part One being a selection of live tracks culled from the archive of acts which have appeared at the club, which has often been the first to showcase relatively unknown bands that have gone on to much greater success. Part Two of the album features what the sleeve calls 'Club Classics' though don't expect the usual 'hands in the air' dross you'd expect from the likes of Ministry Of Sound. This album is a must for anyone who ever visited the club but more than that, it's an incredible selection in its own right, illustrating the diversity of a current music scene in which nothing is ruled out, as long as it makes you move. It's this variety that, ultimately, makes Trash Companion #01 greater than the sum of its parts.

4 out of 5 stars Good hip hop cd!.......2003-06-18

This is a very fun hip hop cd. This is Gold Chains first self titled track. I heard them recently in Seattle and realized this band has a pretty good following considering how many people were singing along with them while they were playing. They bring a lot of energy not only to their live performances
            but also to the cd.

Pick this cd up, the price is definitly worth the quality of the listed five songs.

5 out of 5 stars death to hip-hop.......2002-12-18

I'm so sick of watered-down white boy backpacker hip-hop. It's a genre with a lifespan shorter than the open bottle of milk in my fridge. Not that mainstream black hip-hop is much better. Unless Missy's singing it, it's probably boring, uninspiring, and grating.

Then there's this. Lights went off when I heard it. Is it grating? Hell yeah, but in a MUCH better way than the Jay-Z's of the world. Id DHR and Tigerbeat 6 made a hip-hop record. Agressive, loud, and fun. digit.
