Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Diverse Music!.......2001-11-26

I had half expected this c.d. to be a continuation of the 'lounge' sound that was evident on Kinobe's most famous track to date-the sublime "Slip Into Something More Comfortable".There are certain lounge moments on this c.d.-there's even an Andy Williams sample on track 2-but to be honest this c.d.'s sound is way to diverse then to be bracketed into any one particular genre. That is why I like this c.d. so much cos as you listen to it you're never sure which direction the music will drift into.It seems to change with alarming regularity-one minute sounding like Air,then going to Groove Armada-then onto some techno before coming off all trip-hop and sounding like Massive Attack at their most threatening. The c.d. is a mixture of 6 tracks done with guest vocalists-mostly female. The stand out is the alluring opener "Butterfly"-which matches anything Beth Hirsch did on Air's Moon Safari. The 3rd track with Laura Campbell guesting sounds even more like Air especially with the hushed moog and string sound.Track 4 is a mixture of rap and vocals that give this track a Groove Armada feel to it.The song is driven by a magnificent sample of Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City".On the next track "Mama's Girl" the vocals have a real Macy Gray feel to them-in fact it's a really funky track. The vocals from Jason Kelly on the song Slave One are even better-this song has a real ambient, chill out feel to it.Finally Ben And Jason who've been getting rave reviews for their own work recently guest on the short final track. It sort of makes this c.d. end in a gentle falsetto whimper rather then a bang.

There is one track that features Skeleton doing a very English accented rap.The sound is very like Massive Attack's last c.d.-trip hop beats, heavy bass line and gentle moody guitar riffs. The subject of the song is quite a horrific story-yet it's also strangely compelling. There are 5 instrumental tracks-some have a lounge sound while others are very much in the ambient mode.Best of these is Tooth And Nail-which must be played at max volume if you like very strong basslines and shimmering synth effects. Some of the instrumental tracks do have a milder mood and are very much strings infused. Most intereseting of these is the 8 minute track "The G# Spot"-which at times is very pleasant sounding with strings and flute solo and then comes across sounding as difficult as say Aphex Twin.

This is a c.d. for all moods-during it's 50 minute duration you'll be taken in many different ways-the major aspect to this c.d. is that it is always very interesting.

      Album Description

Australian version of the sophomore album includes two bonus tracks 'The Monkey's Cheek' & 'Summer In The Studio' (I Monster Summer In Sheffield Mix Edit). Q magazine gave it 4 stars and said, '..the duo have returned with an adventurous album brimming with ice cool samples, dreamy folk and luxurious instrumentation. The gentle acoustic meanderings and achingly beautiful vocals of Victoria Hearn make 'Butterfly' a deceptive opener while 'Having A Moment' complete with Andy Williams sample, provides the expected dose of lounge. But with hip hop alongside easy listening it's nothing if not unpredictable, and fascinating evidence that Kinobe are evolving with impressive speed'. 2001.
