Twilo, Volume 1

The history of house legend Junior Vasquez and Manhattan superclub Twilo are closely entwined. Back in 1989, Vasquez was a cofounder of the Sound Factory--a haven for New York's coolest original house aficionados. The Factory closed in 1995, after complaints from the local community, but it didn't stay shut for long. In the wake of huge public demand, it reopened as Twilo in 1997, with Vasquez triumphantly returning to the wheels of steel for Juniorverse, his Saturday night residency. These pneumatic house sets are faithfully recreated on Twilo, Vol. One, a double CD collection that puts you right in the middle of the club's gyrating dance floor. Vasquez rummages through progressive house plates, uplifting four-to-the-floor, boundary-skirting tribal electro, and, on the second CD, a box full of his own inimitable remixes. There you can find the sultry R&B of Kelis's Kelis's "Good Stuff" recast as a triumphant podium-stormer and the uplifting soul of Zelma Davis's "The Power" stretched into a 10-minute funk marathon. Over two CDs, it feels nearly as long as Vasquez's legendary Saturday night sets--but for true house obsessives, Twilo, Vol. 1 should be a revelation. --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars one of junior's strongest mixes.......2005-09-16

After the usual filler opening tracks, we get some good vocal tracks, with donna delory, system F and The Aurora. The instrumentals that follow are no less slammin', probably some of the best non-vocals junior has ever picked for a mix. Disc 2 is where the focus is on the vocal, with one peak hour diva anthem after another. A couple of hard to find mixes are on here in fairly long lengths, most noticeably the amazing "Higher" by Vernessa Mitchell. I only wish Junior would have given us his full mix of Believe by Jocelyn Brown. Here, it's choppy, all over the place, and only five minutes! Track times:

CD1

1. indo (6:50)
2. Floating higher (2:29)
3. On & on (7:24)
4. Cry (5:27)
5. Hear you calling (5:05)
6. Swallow it down (6:15)
7. Watching you (5:10)
8. Mind trap (5:45)
9. Airwaves (3:49)
10. Egocentric (1:13)
11. Paranoid (8:48)
12. Tribal mayhem (3:18)
13. surrender now (5:04)
14. equitoreal (3:15)

CD2
1. Let the music play (5:25)
2. I am strong (6:57)
3. With you (8:34)
4. Don't be afraid of the dark (5:01)|
5. Nothingness (6:54)
6. Good stuff (9:13)
7. Stick together (7:04)
8. Movin up (5:07)
9. Higher (10:38)
10. Believe (5:00)

1 out of 5 stars Cheeseball music.......2002-10-30

Okay, I read several reviews of this album and I can't believe so many like it. I had never heard Junior Vasquez before, but I had heard from others that he was a talented DJ of progressive trance. I don't care what anyone says, you are only as good as the music you select, even if you mix like a ninja. Almost every song I have listened to defines cheese. From the lyrics (dear god are they bad) to the overall sound. I don't claim to be anything more than a music lover, but this music I have to hate. Stick to the true musicians, like Sander Kleinenberg and Sasha, and leave this clown on the shelves.

3 out of 5 stars Alright...........2001-09-26

Being familure with Junior Vasquez, I was a little surprised and dissappointed with the overkill of vocals used. The first cd has some good moments, expecially the first 3 tracks but the quality in the latter part of the cd falls considerably. As for the second cd, I listened to it once, and haven't since. I would recommend any Junior Vasquez cd but this one.

1 out of 5 stars twilo.......2001-06-01

I found that while junior keeps me jamin' at twilo weekly, the cd did not keep my attention at all. There is no doubt about junior's talents when it comes to inventing new beats, however the vocals part of the cd set was lacking as his vocals usually are.The vocals should be left to victor c. and peter r.Junior should stick to what he does best.Twilo saturday nights. That is where i find him to be successful.I did not enjoy his last attempt at a cd either.

5 out of 5 stars The Boy is HOT !!!!.......2001-03-07

Junior comes correct on this two disc masterpiece. I can't take out of my rotation. From track on cd 1 to track ten cd 2 he keeps you moving. Guaranteed to keep a party jumping !!!
