Can't get enough..............2007-07-23

.....of this fabulous singer. Right now, there are several beautiful Brazilian girls who make beautiful music, and Bebel heads the list. CeU is a comparitive [though fabulous] rookie, and the wonderful Ana Caram has the mixed fortune to record for a boutique label, whose product is hard to find.

This is an absolutely wonderful recording...seductive, alive, enchanting, addicting. The songs are Latin jazz, and won't be familiar to most American listeners, even the ones in English [Bebel's English is pretty good]. Who Cares...this record is about feelings that know no language.

Do not fail to grab this...one hearing, and you're hooked. Then, you'll want Bebel's other records; that's OK, because they're great, too. Go ahead, be seduced; you'll enjoy it. Promise.

GREAT, simply put.
A refreshing twist on bossa and Brazilian music. A perfect entree to Bebel if you have never purchased any of her CDs.

Beware, however, that if you buy this her others are a "tad" behind this gem. (not to say they are bad at all, just saying this CD set the bar very high).

When this album first came out in 2000,I first saw it at Starbucks coffee shops. I dismissed it as snooze-inducing easy listening,perfect for the background of sipping an overpriced latte.

I was WRONG.

This is a beautiful album!It's impossible to choose highlights or a "Best Track" on this one,because it's PERFECT.Bebel Gilberto breathes new life into bossa nova with her singing.I look forward to listening to more of her music!

Bebel Gilberto appears to be the figurehead of 21st-century bossa nova, so it's only fitting she should be the subject of one of the biggest 21st-century trends, the remix. But when the remixes are done as well as this, it actually adds to the original album. Her languid, sensual vocals are still the cornerstone, but Rae & Christian's more upbeat take on "Bananeira" propels the song to the dance floor, while Trüby Trio evoke the shantytown favelas, home of samba, on the percussive "Sem Contencao." A couple of the tracks might seem more like limp Sade than tropical Bebel, but for the most part there's plenty of invention occurring, as with Da Lata's gorgeous interpretation of "August Day Song." In addition to all of the aforementioned, King Britt, Ananda Project, and 4hero are among the studio whizzes who lend their high-profile talents to Gilberto, making Tanto Tempo into something reborn. --Chris Nickson

I stumbled across this compilation at my local Goodwill. Familiar with the name Bebel Gilberto, if not her music, I picked it up having recognized Peter Kruder as one of the remix artists. So I come to this not as one who knows her music but as a techno geek who loves such artists as Thievery Corporation and Kruder & Dorfmeister (half the duo being the Peter Kruder noted above) who have introduced me to a collection of artists I'd never otherwise hear.

Compilations such as this remix album are a great way to listen to something new. It's obvious that the backbone of these mixes is Bebel Gilberto's music and it is quite lovely, though I will have to venture forth and obtain the original of this album.

But to compare it to the original is to miss the point. Of course it isn't the original and of course one should have the original. But remixes, in my opinion, are a great way to introduce people to the often inspired alternative versions one can make, even from a great original. Such is the case here.

There are some clunkers on here but many of them are quite stunning the highlights being Peter Kruder's version of "Tanto Tempo" and Rae & Christian's take on "Bananeira". Others are mere background music, though nice background music at that. All in all this is a good mix to put on for some downtempo mood music.

As "Tanto Tempo" is a great album,so is its remixed version.It's interesting to hear how different DJs handle Bebel Gilberto's exuberant work.They give a new spin to bossa nova.If you enjoyed the original versions,you'll like this one!

The highlights include Rae&Christian's version of "Bananaeira",Truby Trio's trippy "Sem Contencao"&Monoaural's take on "Mais Feliz." The three versions of "August Day Song" from Chateau Flight,King Britt,and Da Lata give it three different flavors,of which Chateau Flight&King Britt are the best.It's no wonder Putumayo chose King Britt's version of "August Day Song" for its "Brazilian Lounge" compilation.Peter Kruder's version of "Tanto Tempo" is perfect for a sweaty,throbbing dancefloor.Mario Caldato's take on "Summer Samba" is perfect for grooving.While Ananda Project,Sin Plomo,Faze Action,Chari Chari&4Hero have filler,it is an overall strong album.Perfect for any Brazilian music collection!

I bought this CD for one track - Tanto Tempo, remixed by Peter Kruder, which combines the best of Kruder's work and Bebel's work. It is sublime! TThe other tracks vary from average to good.

These remixes make of this album an incredible accomplishment. It is a remarkable combination of electronic music and sexy bossa nova. If you like downtempo/midtempo lounge music, please give this one a try. It will amaze you. This CD is sooo good, it can actually be the beginning of a new music genre all on its own: SEXELECTROBOSSA.

A very talented crew of master DJ's/Producers like Rae & Christian, Trüby Trio, and Peter Kruder, to name a few, have made of this album a true masterpiece. But beware, these are not your traditional "Nu Brazil" remixes. This is a very diffirent album, with a very distinctive sound. It is definitely sexy, somewhat futuristic, and very very trippy. Quite unique.

Sexy bossa nova has never sounded so good and contemporary. Pour a glass of your favorite drink, light up a candle and let the music take you on this amazing trip...

The overall effect of this interpretation of Ariodante by McGegan is one of elegance, refinement and emotional intensity that flows without being pushed and touches the soul with its singing without being overcontrolled and calculated. This is the main difference between this version and the Minkowski version which has many great moments of lovely singing which surpass the McGegan soloists often, but which is sometimes rushed with overcalculated and overly controlled singing on Otter's part which tarnishes the interpretation. Otter seems not to be really immersed in the part whereas Hunt is. Unforunately the complete recording of this McGegan interpretation is out of print, so get the highlights (this edition)and wait for the re-issue of the complete version.

Have you ever wished to be present as a great instrumentalist teaches gifted pupils? Sony's set of Alfred Cortot's Master Classes can satisfy that fantasy, as well as provide insightful performances of works (and excerpts of works) including some Cortot never recorded, and hearing him expound on them from a performer's point of view. It's possible thanks to an engineering student who taped many of Cortot's classes in the late 1950s and Murray Perahia, who tracked down the tapes and produced this invaluable set. Don't understand French? Not to worry--French texts and English translations of Cortot's remarks are provided. We also hear Cortot playing with spontaneity and captivating spur-of-the-moment impetuousness, if also with rather more wrong notes than the fastidious would like. The inevitable frustration of wanting him to play an entire lengthy work soon gives way to appreciation for his insights and the beauties of the excerpts he's highlighting. Those insights include technical points like pedaling, rhythm, and touch. But more often he's teaching a work's expressive content. He'll relate a Beethoven Sonata to a love story or the way Chopin's Ballades reflect the Adam Mieckicwicz poems said to inspire them. There's Bach, Mozart, and Schumann here too. Cortot's main point, the lesson that pervades these discs, is one all aspiring artists need to absorb: "Technique can never really be separated from musical expression." This set is must for pianophiles, students, and admirers of one of the last century's greatest artists. --Dan Davis

Five Stars with a Caveat.......2006-12-02

This is a collection of musical fragments with spoken commentary. The pieces stop and start unexpectedly, and if you just want to sit down and enjoy some music, you'll find this set unnerving.

But what fragments! The format actually highlights how vividly Cortot could make a musical point: Some of these ideas leap off the CD, and will send you heading to the piano to figure out how he did what he did. For instance, his interpretation of Mozart's C-minor Fantasia, though stylistically anachronistic, makes almost all other performances of this piece seem emotionally stultified. This is the Mozart of "Don Giovanni" translated to the piano.

Most of the repertoire wasn't recorded elsewhere by Cortot -- an additional appeal for pianophiles.

A must for any music connoisseur.......2006-01-31

This is one of the great treasures of the piano discography. I was swept off my feet when I heard the Partita No.1, Cortot's only ever Bach recording -- he plays it with elegance, elan, and warmth that easily surpasses Glenn Gould's account of the same piece. Cortot gives tremendous insight into all the works, even going as far as comparing Mozart's Fantasia in C minor to the epic Don Juan. The session was taped at the Ecole Normale de Musique in 1954, and although some of the playing is extremely messy Cortot's distinctive sound and poetry still stands out. This set will be a pleasure to both the professional and student alike.

This is one of the best recordings I have heard of this repertoire. The playing absolutely sparkles, and the interpretations of these often cryptic musical sources are creative and full of life. I strongly recommend this CD!
