Peace Is Tough

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Berlin’s resident audio experimentalists Terranova return with another stunning album that refuses to be easily classified. Fresh off last year’s Hitchhiking Nonstop With No Particular Destination, the crew of Fetisch, Meister and Shapemod wasted no time in creating a powerful companion piece to that album. Together with Hitchhiking…, Peace Is Tough forms a sort of double album by fuzing together five new tracks with six new versions of previously released tracks (which have so far only been available on vinyl or in limited editions).

Never the kind to create nondescript dance tracks, Terranova take their loves for hip-hop, electro, rock and dub and throw them all into their bombastic music bouillabaisse. Fuzzed-out guitars collide with rough beats to form dark, yet danceable tracks. Vocals come courtesy of dreadlocked punk princess Ari-Up, the stepdaughter of the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten and singer for seminal punk/new wave misfits The Slits. Ari’s one-of-a-kind voice brings an urgent energy to Terranova’s thumping rhythmic backbone.

By creating a sonic world where dirty beats and basslines are in constant battle with flowing melodies and multi-layered vocals, Terranova prove that Peace Is Tough.

    1 out of 5 stars Copy Protected.......2007-03-07

"This CD is copy protected and not playable on mac & pc"

Since I play all of my music via a media server from my PC in mp3 format, this CD is essentially useless. I have an old CD player in my attic, but I don't want to get that out to play this one disk. I will probably never listen to this CD now. I certainly won't buy any more Terranova CDs.

It would be nice if Amazon would indicate which CDs are copy protected/unplayable.

4 out of 5 stars Top Shelf, as Always.......2003-10-01

Like Monet paints haystacks, Terranova turns out tracks from front to back that reflect a light of their own, but leave no doubt they come from the same brush. Twelve tracks and every one of them hits hard.

Guest vocals aplenty by Jewels & Jake, and long-time Terranova co-conspirators: Cath Coffey (from Stereo MCs) and former punk princess Ari-Up (formerly of new-wave punkers, The Slits). The tracks with Ari-Up are the standouts, though.

The opener, "No Peace", is a cinematic saunter down a dark alley, complete with horn hits, and string phrases in the feel-good places. Ari-Up throws down angelic background sounds, punctuated with staccato vocals forming a juxtaposition on a mission. It sets the tone of the album, as a whole, without giving you a clue of what's to come.

"When in Rome..." is a slow-roller with a bass line to move the room. Ari-Up drops a dancehall calyp-hop rap over the break and it's so hot you'1l reach for the rewind before the rest of the track is even finished. It's the highlight of the great disc.

Out of the remix machine comes "Rockmongril" - a double take on the track "Mongril" from their 1999 release Hitchhiking Non-stop with no Particular Destination. It opens with the Led Zeppelin drums from "When the Levee Breaks" before launching into guitars that rock and shock. Spin it with caution.

There's also a 12th track tucked at the end. If this track doesn't put you on the dance floor, you should check for a pulse. Really.

Fans of Tricky or old school Massive Attack will dig this disc for sure, but anybody who likes music done well, regardless of genre will find Peace is Tough a gem in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Long live Terranova!!!.......2003-09-29

A new CD and another amazing album by Terranova. After "Hitchhiking..." it was hard to believe that it can get any better. But it can. The "hidden" 12th track is wonderful. A must have album.
