Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

It is wonderful to have Ms. Demby move away from the atonal and morbid sounds of Attunement and Spirit Trance to the uplifting sounds she gave us in Novus Magnificat and Set Free. This is definitely one of her best works.

Originally released in 1975, Timewind is one of the most revered and mesmerizing recordings in the extensive Klaus Schulze catalogue and certainly the best known globally. Says Mike DeGagne on The All-Music Guide: "Dedicated to Richard Wagner, Timewind is a 60-minute electronic expedition that is broken up into two half-hour tracks, Bayreuth Return and Wahnfried 1883. The first 30 minutes involves icy pulsations and lengthy tonal flights that unnoticeably converge into each other. While one rhythm gains momentum, the other one slowly fades into a bubbly electronic bath of bright swirls and meandering keyboard waves. Similar to early Tangerine Dream, the music here rises and falls above a distant sonic horizon, and the effect is truly mesmerizing. One specific flow can last for minutes, while small, detailed noises adhere themselves to the main electronic run. On the second track, more of the same far-off synthesized altering takes place, but the washes of keyboard become inoculated with a sharper, more precise sound. Longer notes build into resilient pieces with the same comforting result. This album will sketch a barren wasteland in the mind through the wispiness of the wind-like effects. Timewind serves as splendid mood music, and the ears are forever kept busy following Schulze's electronic wandering."

The previously unreleased bonus tracks, Echos Of Time and Solar Wind, were recorded in 1975 at Klaus' home in the same sessions as Timewind while Windy Times was taken from a session twenty five years later. The definitive version of Timewind is remastered and housed in a stylish digipak with deluxe booklet with new liner notes and is numbered for collectors.

Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.

"Timewind" Reissued!!!.......2007-03-30

Klaus Schulze's 1975 album "Timewind" is a classic in German Electronic Music. The album has gone on to be an influence to many other electronic musicians such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Steve Roach and even Kitaro.
31 years after its original release, "Timewind" is now remastered and reissued with the best sound quality ever. Also included is a bonus disc that includes two outtakes from the recording sessions as well as a rare track from 2000.
The entire "Timewind" album was recorded live in Klaus Schulze's place of residence at the time - an abandoned barber shop which Klaus converted into a recording studio and living space. There were no computerized synths or keyboards at the time and because all of the music was recorded directly to a 2-track tape machine without overdubs, it becomes all the more extraordinary.
The original album consisted of just two long tracks - one per side of the LP. The opening half consists of the dynamic sequencer tour-de-force "Bayreuth Return". The rhythms are floating and hynotic throughout. Its etherial chord washes are extraordinary and the abrupt ending with a loud crashing noise is quite startling but effective.
The second half, "Wahnfried 1883", is Klaus' tribute to composer Richard Wagner. Over the course of its 28 minutes, we are treated to a massive cloud of synthetic wind sounds and heavy dark long-held chords. There is no rhythm to this piece, just a dark ambient structure. This is great mood music for relaxing, reading a book or studying. This piece can really take you somewhere if you have the imagination for it.
The first two tracks on the bonus CD are from the same 1975 sessions. "Echoes of Time" is in fact an extended 39-minute alternate version of "Bayreuth Return" with some very subtle yet noticable differences. The "Bayreuth" theme is also apparent in the shorter 13-minute track "Solar Wind" which consists of "Bayreuth Return"'s synthetic chords without the sequencer rhythm. Finally the "Windy Times" piece from 2000 that closes the bonus disc was composed as Klaus's self-tribute to his classic album. The sequencer rhythm is similar to the original "Bayreuth Return" but in a much updated fashion as well as the mid-tempo techno-like drum sounds.
The CD booklet is extraordinary with many historic photos as well as essays from both Klaus Schulze and his manager Klaus Mueller. Together, they offer a fascinating history of this groundbreaking album.
The recent reissue of Klaus Schulze's "Timewind" is the definitive one. The remastering is amazing and the bonus tracks are stellar. This is definitely recommended as a first-buy Schulze release and is one of his best albums ever.

This should be your first Klaus Schulze CD.......2007-02-02

At first, I wasn't too crazy about repurchasing all my favorite CD's of Klaus Schulze all over again, especially since they are now released in cardboard digi-paks, but since "Timewind" was re-released, with an entire extra CD of un-released recordings from that era, I just had to buy "Timewind" again. Actually the box does look pretty nice.

Most people seem to regard "Timewind" as Klaus Schulze's most important album. Yes, I'll have to agree. I love the long atmospheric intentions of these two main tracks, but I never was too crazy about how he ended "Bayreuth Return". You'll be in a soothed ambionic meditative state for nearly half an hour, and then he ends the track with a simulated "crash" which still shakes me up because I'm never prepared for it when it comes. And then "Wannfried 1883", just beautiful from start to finish.

Then, on the second "bonus disc", the first track, "Echoes of Time" definitely continues the mood set of this album. It makes sense that this was never put on an album before because it runs nearly 39 minutes. No vinyl LP was capable of having this because of the time limit restraints of the LP back then. And I'm sure Klaus didn't want to edit it, so maybe it just ended up in a vault on Reel To Reel tapes, hid away for more than 30 years. And then they added two additional lost gems, "Solar Wind" and "Windy Times". It is this additional bonus disc that makes this great album so much more better.

You know, once you buy this CD, you'll probably want to start replacing all your Klaus Schulze CD's because this one is greatly improved.

Title Says It All.......2007-02-22

I imagine the audience for this CD, particularly in America, is a fairly small one. If you find the concept of Space Metal even the least intriguing you'll enjoy Star One.

Ayreon fans should take note, if you are more into the Prog side than the Metal side there is not much for you here. Arjen went pretty all out to keep the slower/calmer/progressive moments out of the CD and replaced them with guitar solos, double bass drums and 16th note tempos.

Imagine Star Trek turned into a heavy metal song. If you like that, buy this immediately!

Great Songwriting!!!.......2005-12-01

I was introduced to this band, this genius, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, when I was given a burned copy of this CD by a friend of mine.

I instantly loved it! The big organ/keyboard/wall-of-sound, the fantastic arrangements, the crunchy guitars, and pounding drums, the warm, full bass, and of course, the variety of great vocals thanks to the talents of Russell Allen, Dan Swanö, Damian Wilson and Floor Jansen.

I am a big fan of the concept/rock opera style since I was a 14 year old kid listening to "Operation Mindcrime" and trying to figure out who killed Mary, to Savatage's "Streets: A Rock Opera", from Trans-siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve & Other Stories" to Saviour Machine's "Legend" trilogy and now this.

This guy knows how to write good songs, no...great songs. Each one has it's own personality and mood yet they seem to blend perfectly into the overall theme of the album, more on that in a second.

Sure, they could be described as "cheesy" by people who don't understand the brilliance of concept albums (when done well) or just don't have an appreciation for this kind of music or for Sci-Fi. But otherwise, I don't see how you can't love this album.

Standout's for me are "High Moon", "The Eye of Ra", and "Master of Darkness".

The production is beautiful, the songwriting is masterful, and the stories are also good. StorieS? As in plural? Yes, unlike a typical concept album, which tell a single story, Space Metal is comprised of songs about individual space movies like "Outlander", "Stargate", "Dune", "Alien", "Star Wars" and more. So the Sci-Fi/Space theme is consistent, but the stories are seperate. It's great!

It's a real bummer that these interpretations of these classic Sci-Fi movies will most likely never be turned into big-budget music videos as they deserve to be, but I know that they have been released on the next best thing, a live DVD.

If you like big-sound, high-quality prog-rock/power metal and enjoy Sci-Fi and concept albums...pick this gem up RIGHT NOW.

Arjen's worst album.......2005-04-25

The first Ayreon album i heard was "The human equation" which i think is one of the best albums i have in my collection, after that i've started collecting all of arjen's work, i now consider him one, if not the best musician of our time... judging by awesome playing skills, great concept albums with a winner line up of guest musicians that never stops to amaze me, allmost perfect studio work, and above all, GREAT music...

At start i was wondering how come this album didn't came out as an ayreon album, and when i listened to it i understood... it's just not it!

i'm not saying it's a bad album, infact it's a great album, but to compare it to the other ones, it's like comparing a pink floyd album to a beatles album...

all the songs here are very short, the longest one is 8 minutes, which is nothing after the 13 mins epics on the other albums, and here, the only conecpt is that all the songs are about sci-fi movies, which is nice, but it's not something brilliant like the universal migrator or the human equation, and allso, the songs here are VERY cheesy, allmost like a rhapsody album...
if you're not looking for something too complicated then you'll LOVE this, but if you're looking for another mind-blowing ayreon master piece, then you'll be pretty dissapointed with this one..

the vocals are GREAT, Russel allen does a fine job like allways, floor jansen makes a pretty impresive female vocals, and damien makes a very powerfull apperiance, the studio work is allso great, as allways, and the guitar playing is pretty original, a bit heavier then ussuall, but still pretty impresive... and all the sci fi effects makes the atmosphere on this album pretty special...

overall, this is a very good album, but it's not a masterpiece, if it was out by any one other then arjen, it would get a different rate from me, but since it is out by arjen... this is my review

Very good.......2004-11-03

I started out my Ayreon collection by getting the Human Equation and Star One Live on Earth with the DVD. So I started on the best first. Then I picked up this studio version of Star One.
I really like the live album. This studio album adds extra ambiance. The lyrics are cheesy - hey they are based on chessy sci fi material like Star Trek 4.
Russell Allen and Damian sound really good. Dan Swano and Robert sing the low parts, which are not as good, but Dan Swano is better than Robert's low vocals on the live album. Floor does okay on the vocals but often she is lost in the mix. Floor's voice also doesn't layer and fill out well. Not bad, but not as good as her vocals with sister Irene on Star One live, which are simply awesome.
Guitar tone is very good. Song structure is pretty good. If you like 70's/80's style of metal and synth overlaid with Arjen's humor, you will like this.

2 years after its release, Star One is still amazing.......2004-05-27

After Arjen Lucassen split up his extreme sides on the previous Ayreon albums, The Flight of the Migrator and The Dream Sequencer, he went on to create the highly atmospheric Ambeon record with an unknown, yet very talented, young female singer. Once he got it out of his system as well, he knew it was time to put out something really heavy but, as in the case with Ambeon, he needed to express himself in a different project than Ayreon... so he called it Star One.

The name of the project is Star One, and the title of the album is Space Metal. On this record, Arjen wanted to pay homage to all the science fiction movies that take place entirely in space. It is no secret that Arjen was deeply influeced by sci-fi films and apparently he felt he wanted to thank for their impact on him. There is no single storyline here, unlike most Ayreon releases. This is a theme album focusing on similar subject matters but each song stands on its own.

Another difference with Ayreon is the number of singers featured here. Arjen chose to work with only four singers this time, and I would consider each and every one of them among the best and most prolific singers in prog metal. Russel Allen from Symphony X is one of the best singers around and his style on Space Metal is no exception. Damian Wilson is Arjen's long-time friend and we've all grown to love his unique and emotional delivery over the years. Then we have a newcomer, Dan Swano, who is currently my favourite vocalist in prog rock and metal. I remember how psyched I was when I heard Arjen was going to work with him because Dan possesses one of the darkest, deepest and most expressive singing styles I have ever heard. I hope he and Arjen will get together again for other projects in the future. The last singer is female vocalist Floor Jansen of After Forever fame. Jansen sounds nothing like she does in After Forever, she sings more operatic and more progressive. Her high singing provides a nice contrast with Dan and Damien's deeper expressions. Usually this is complemented by Russel Allen's sometimes fiery and sometimes painful delivery. Overall each singer seems to be very excited to be part of this project and embraces it as if it were their own. Arjen always knows who he has to work with and how to bring out the best in these talented individuals.

The music is a lot heavier than the previous Ayreon releases, but by "heavy" I mean by Arjen Lucassen's standards. Don't go expecting an ultra-aggressive riff and furious drum-bass hybrid. After all this is Arjen Lucassen and his artsy side is always there. It's this aspect that makes him different from 98% of other prog metal acts. Still there is plenty of gigantic riffs played by Arjen and some really beautiful lead solos that shine with ferocity. Jens Johansson (Stratovarius, Malmsteen) and Erik Norlander (Lana Lane) perform meticulous keyboard sections in quite a few songs. Shadow Gallery guitarist Gary Wehrkamp also offers two leads, one of which sees him duelling with Jens Johansson in the song "Master of Darkness". The usual Ayreon instruments such as the hammond, mellotrons and analog synths are all handled by Arjen himself and long-time drummer Ed Warby is once again sitting behind the drum kit.

It is hard to pick any favourites here but I really like the fierce opening of "Set Your Controls" inviting all four singers in the mix, the emotional track "Songs of the Ocean" and the heavy "Master of Darkness" both displaying the dynamics we're familiar with from Ayreon discs. "The Eye of Ra" and the 10-minute epic "Starchild" are most fans' favourite tunes as they bring heaviness, depth and poignancy into the focus of these tracks and combine them with a strange kind of catchiness that simply draws the listener's attention.

Star One is one of the top 5 discs Arjen has released. While the earlier Ayreon albums, The Final Experiment and Into the Electric Castle, are still more appealing to me, I also have to add the new Ayreon album The Human Equation to this list. But personally I prefer this album over the Migrator records or the Ambeon project. This was one of my favourite 2002 prog releases along with the CDs of Pain of Salvation, Vanden Plas and Threshold. And today, after two years, it's still as good as ever. It just needs time to grow on you, so be a tad patient.

The Flower Kings - Another Solid Album.......2007-03-11

After releasing two massive double studio albums in a row, The Flower Kings pair things down a bit and put out this single album at the turn of the century. A major lineup change takes place for this one as original bassist Michael Stolt is replaced by the extremely talented Jonas Reingold. It is not often that a bass player would make that much of a difference in a band's sound, but in this case Reingold really does add a significant element to the material. His fluid style seems to be a perfect fit within The Kings lineup and moves them to a higher level. The albums centerpiece is the 25 minute plus "I Am The Sun". The long track is divided into two parts to open and close the album. "Sun" is one of the band's best all time compositions in my opinion and showcases all of their strengths as both instrumentalists and songwriters. The middle part of the album is more of a mixed bag, but for the most part good. There are several pop oriented tunes "Dram On Dreamer", "Chicken Farmer Song", and "You Don't Know What You've Got" which are all ok, but nothing spectacular. "Rumble Fish Twist" is a killer instrumental that sees the Flower Kings moving into fusion territory. Jonas Reingold and sax player Ulf Wallander really stand out on this one as this is quite different from previous Flower Kings excursions. This sound would be explored further down the road especially on the band's "Unfold The Future" album. "The Monster Within" has never really been one of my favorites by the band. The other three tracks "Underdog", "Slave To The Money" and "A King's Prayer" are all solid with "Prayer" ending with one of Stolt's most inspired solos. Overall this is another nice album from the Flower Kings that benefits from the band editing out some of their material for a shorter more concise single album.

I am a fan of the band, I have discover them with this album, I have to say that this one is one of their weakest work. The album open with force with I am the sun part one, but the song is getting weaker and weaker as it progress. The best cuts for me are "Rumble fish twist" and the closing track "I am the sun part two" The previous and the following album of the band were better in my opinion.

Best by Far.......2005-12-30

If nothing else, this band is inconsistent. Some of their cd's are downright appallingly boring and unlistenable but then they come up from nowhere and totally redeem themselves with cds like this and Back In the World Of Adventures. It surprises me, but get this cd and you'll have one of their best works. It is really up there alongside Porcupine Tree's best work - the two best bands out there today.

Space Revolver.......2005-11-29

In short, a progressive rock masterpiece. Then again, if you're a fan of modern progressive rock, you probably already own this.

Decades ago, several bands composed long songs that consist of pieces influenced by all sorts of other bands and styles of music. 'Selling England By The Pound' from Genesis, 'Tales from the Topographic Oceans' from Yes... back then, 'progressive' was a term used to describe music, not a genre of music itself. In the mid 1990's, many bands became 'progressive rock', and they composed synthesizor-ridden, 10 minute 'epics'. Behind these mockeries of a form of music is the true modern progressive bands. And among them is the Flower Kings.

The Flower Kings consist of a group of talented Swedish instrumentalists. The band is fronted by guitar legend Roine Stolt, who writes the lyrics, sings, and plays amazing guitar. But by no means is this all Stolt's doing. The whole band is amazing, and especially on this release.

So onto the songs. It starts out with a 15:00 minute epic called 'I Am The Sun (Part I)'. If this song doesn't hook you onto the album, then you'd best put it away and go back to listening to something more simplistic. This track just unloads theme after theme, yet remains very coherent. The next track, 'Dream On Dreamer', is a slow jazzy, soulful ballad that flows right into the end of the first epic track. Its a great break from the musical invasion the first track led.

Track three, 'Rumble Fish Twist', is one of the highlights. Its the only instrumental on the album, and it's essentially an 8:00 jazz-rock fusion, and it's highlights are the absolutely monumental preformances from all band members.

Onward we go to 'Monster Within'. It's the weakest track on the album, but it's still a masterpiece. Not much can really be said about it, really. But the next track, 'Chicken Farmer Song', sounds like an odd country track or something, but it's a serious song about daydreaming. This song is excellent, and certainly has its glorious moments.

'Underdog' is a good track. One of the shorter ones on the album, and it's kind-of an acoustic, anthematic epic. 'You Don't Know What You've Got' is similar to 'Dream On Dreamer', as it's a slower ballad. A calm before the storm, so to speak. And a storm indeed, as the next song is 'A Slave to Money'. At 7:30, it's a longer track, and it builds tension throughout the track. Great song.

And the following 'A King's Prayer' is simply impossible to explain. Starts off as a regular ballad, with an absolutely amazing chorus, and reaches an epic climax, then a masterful instrumental composition supports one of the greatest, most passionate guitar solos of all time, courtesy of Roine Stolt. And if that wasn't enough, 'I Am The Sun (Part 2)' ends the album with another 10:00+ minute epic. This one starts off acoustically, and builds to a reprise of Part 1, to a monumental chorus, then the album ends of a soft note with an acoustic conclusion.

Keeping in mind that my words simply do not do justice to a masterpiece such as this, I cannot recommend this higher. Yes, there will be critics of this particular band, because they simply cannot fathom what is going on in each of the songs. And yes, it tends to take a few listens to understand what you're listening to. But rest assured, your time and devotion is appreciated once it sinks in just how wonderful this recording is. Everything flows into everything, so instead of listening to ten separate tracks, you feel like you're listening to one. And at 76 minutes, its a shock that there's no filler.

And thats what makes this a masterpiece.

Prog rock lives on.......2005-04-17

I'm tired of people saying this band and others are derivative. What is so bad about emulating the PROG GODS like Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson? Other bands in other genres emulate their heroes. Why is it always criticized in progressive music? This album is inspired symphonic progressive music. I am the Sun, Rumble Fish Twist...need I say more. Stolt and Bodin are brilliant.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

Cute moog madness.......2007-06-11

Both this compilation and "The Essential Perrey & Kingsley" feature all the tracks from the 2 collaborative Perrey & Kingsley albums:
"The In Sound from Way Out!" and "Spotlight On The Moog (Kaleidoscopic Vibrations)".
But this one also features all the tracks from Jean-Jacques Perrey's solo album "Moog Indigo".
So if you were thinking of buying "Essential", "In Sound" or "Mood Indigo" don't spend so much money. All those tracks are here!
There are classic tracks of all 3 original albums compiled here, so they're a must-have if you like incredibly strange music or moog/electronic sounds.
Note though that not all these experiments in happy zing-boink grooviness work, but the ones that do will blow your head off!
Try it, you won't regret it.

Back to the future.......2002-12-07

Ever notice how things that were made specifically to appear futuristic(like any average episode of "Star trek" for instance)end up seeming a million times more dated than anything else from that particular era? Well add this album to the list.And thats not at all a bad thing...the irony of the whole thing is a work of art in itself.Such warm and fluffy feelings of nostalgia coming from music that upon its initial composition was intended to evoke visions of the future.Electronic music has come a long way since the days of Analog...but when you hear that opening synth riff from "The savers" you'll find it hard to believe it's over 30 years old (despite the "Georgy girl-ish" melody of the main body of the song).Sure there's some throwaway tracks here,but that's more of a complaint to be lodged against the original albums from which this compilation was made from...It's this compilation in fact,which inspired me to give it five stars, based on the music alone I still would have given it four stars.This compilation is incredibly economical being that it contains 4 original albums by Perrey and or Perrey and Kingsley! The remix stuff by Fat boy slim or whatever is pointless of course (as is 95 percent of that kind of dance junk anyway) but who cares? This album is for all those people who were born before the 1970s and are still asking the question "It's the 21st century already! So where are all the flying cars and robot maids?" And are just a little bummed about it.

There is such a thing as "too much of a good thing"

You'll be ready to switch CDs about halfway through the first one.

The album is a quirky patchwork of pioneering moog work, though I wouldn't consider it 'listenable' for more than a track or two.

The music that's there is great, but it gets a bit painful after too long. Throw a couple tracks into your winamp playlist, but you probably won't want to listen to it all at once.

Gamma Ray delivers again.......2007-01-15

It can't have been easy for Gamma Ray to follow up their epic 1995 album Land of the Free, but with 1997's Somewhere Out in Space, the band delivered another dose of high quality power metal.

Somewhere Out in Space might not be as majestic as Land of the Free, but it's not that far behind it either. This is a very good power metal album, and definitely has that epic and melodic sound that Kai Hansen practically invented. The whole album is solid, but there are some standout tracks. The title track is a high-speed metal anthem worthy of Helloween, Valley of the Kings and Lost in the Future are epics song despite their relatively short length, Watcher in the Sky could have come from Judas Priest's Painkiller album, and Shine On is a majestic anthem. Future Freedom Call drummer Dan Zimmermann was on board for this album, and you can definitely hear elements of what would become the Freedom Call sound here.

Gamma Ray would continue their series of excellent albums with 1999's Power Plant.

I suppose it goes without saying that Gamma Ray would appeal to Helloween fans. Fans of the more recent power metal bands like Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, Edguy and Hammerfall also owe it to themselves to check out Gamma Ray, and Somewhere Out in Space is a great album to start with.

The 2003 reissue of Somewhere Out in Space features digitally remastered sound, three bonus tracks (Miracle, a cover of Uriah Heep's Return to Fantasy, and the cover of Judas Priest's Victim of Changes, which originally appeared on the Valley of the Kings EP), and comes in a nice digipack. It's a great way to improve a classic album.

NOTE: If you can find one, there is a very cool (but very limited) box set that collects all six of the remastered Gamma Ray albums.
