Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars mystical.......2007-03-11

i am so glad i bought this CD. the other day I got in my car, leaned the seat back, closed my eyes and listened to Lucky Cat from start to finish. it was like being in a beautiful, fetal dream state.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky Me! :).......2005-10-07

I fell in love with Isan way back with Beautronics, which to me was like somewhat minimilist modern/contemporary sculpture, combined with otherworldly landscapes, made into music. Since then I've been keeping up with them and their unique sound.

Not quite as good as their most recent album, Meet Next Life, in my opinion, but Lucky Cat is still an extremely good album of music. Track 7, Kittenplan A, for instance, breaks my heart with it's lush, bittersweet, futuristic melodies. No one writes music like Isan, and I'm glad someone does. This is another winner of an album and is highly recommended to moderate and dedicated fans alike.

Thanks Isan! :)

Note: This album was released in 2001, not 2005 like Amazon would lead some to believe.

    Album Description

Think about the last day you woke up with a yen to forsake the ordinary. The kind of day that made you want to miss your exit and keep on driving, to hide in the bushes while the carpool honked, to seek out some insight from an unimagined source. Happy Cat Make You Lucky, the debut release from Jeff Davis & the Confusionists, is the soundtrack to that day. This contemplative collection of well-crafted originals is an album of contrasts, a mellifluous melding of the familiar and the unexpected, of influence and originality, of intense introspection and unadulterated joy. Davis wants you to have fun with this album, and you will. The compilation of memorable grooves will have you humming long after the last notes fade. In its upbeat, melodic, accessible compositions, Happy Cat Make You Lucky is fusion at its finest. Funk and bebop horn jams weave a freeform architecture atop the rock-solid foundation of Davis's bossa nova guitar, fretless bassist Pat Drews's jazz riffs, and drummer Bud Hayman's Weckel-inspired rhythms. Keys, percussion, and vibraphone add pop, samba, and rock elements to the 17 tracks, all inspired by a broad array of musical genres that have influenced and excited Davis since childhood. Although Davis's lyrical tracks shine, it's the composition and musicianship that take center stage on this release. The result of unique instrumental pairings, time signatures, and blending of styles is pure dharma jazz, inspired fusion that reminds one all at once of old-school Chicago, Medeski Martin and Wood, and the Legendary Jim Ruiz Group after a bout of spiritual ecstasy. "Missing Miss Darcey" is a beautiful, mellow piece featuring vibraphone lines reminiscent of music box melodies. In contrast, the vibe solos on "Iced Latte" are decidedly funky jazz, mingling with strong bass and drum lines and vibrant jazz trumpet. And in "Take Me Down River" strong horn, bass, and guitar lines intertwine in a soaring crescendo to create the album's most hummable track. Characterized by its high caliber of improvisational interplay, its dark beauty, and its humbleness in the face of bliss, Happy Cat Make You Lucky is an impressive solo debut that would be right at home on any jazz radio station. Its tasty hooks and delicious pop moments are far from ordinary, and its ability to show the listener a good time could raise Davis from local-hero status to national recognition. 5 out of 5 stars Makes Happy Cats of us all!.......2006-03-19

"Happy Cat Make You Lucky" by Jeff Davis and the Confusionists has indeed made happy cats out of those lucky enough to hear them live as well as the 14 tracks on their debut disc. What makes this disc stand out is Jeff's full use of melody that ultimately turns this platter into something both jazz traditionalists and those unfamiliar with the genre can enjoy. Evoking sounds that can remind one of Miles as well as Mangione but never treading waters too familiar. A mostly instrumental affair interspersed with a few cuts featuring Jeff's smooth vocal style. A fully accessible, listenable, and thoroughly enjoyable CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great, classic riff rock.......2003-06-13

These guys kick it! Real rock n' roll with big, juicy guitar hooks you can sink you teeth into. Buy this album and take a break from all the droning, 20 year old blondes and guys prancing and shouting in sweatsuits. I can't wait to see these guys live!

5 out of 5 stars New York Rock and Roll.......2003-01-03

People say a lot about the revival of RnR in NYC; that it's cool to play guitar again and to wear jackets with zippers in the wrong places and to cite A Certain Ratio as an influence. They are right, to those who never heard of Gang of Four until six months ago and are amazed that rhythm guitars can have angles, bass lines can can be danceable, and choruses can be catchy, new NYC rock seems to be innovative, or at least as innovative as their derivativeness allows. Well, so what? There has got to be something more and that something more is knowing how to rock. This is what separates Cheap Trick and the MC5 from The Pop Group and it is what separates Tiger Mountain from The Strokes, The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, etc. Clever songwriting, big changes, big guitars, harmonies and all in the service of the evil powers of Rock and Roll. Recommended.
