The best of the best.......2004-12-07

I am trying to remember how I first learned of Gurunam two years ago--perhaps it was through Amazon. com. However it was, I am thoroughly, thoroughly grateful to have all of Gurunam's chants in my life. I am now chanting with my cds everyday and look forward to this time as the most precious part of my activities. My cd collection is huge and I have chanting tapes and cds and videos of every kind. These from Gurunam are the ultimate as far as I am concerned. In addition to wondering how I found the cds is the fact that I heard them after purchasing them and obviously did not realize what a great tool I had for myuse and for my benefit. I recommend especially Green House, Triple Mantra, Sounds of the Ethers, Mystic Light, Soul Trance, Heaven's Touch, Blissful Spirit, Healing Fire, Lumine de Lumine--well really all of the cds (there are others). Also the books (that's another story). Go to their website : www.rootlight.com and you will be able to hear previews of all of these gems.

Nothing Short of Amazaing.......2003-07-06

After purchasing this CD I researched the internet and purchased all 10 CDs. Everyone is truly amazing. I have a 350 CD collection of primarily chant / new age and this is at the top of the list. BUY THIS CD, you won't be disapointed.

A meditation-must!.......2003-04-24

The first track on this c.d. is nothing short of fabulous. It's a little difficult at first to chant and pray along with...but after mastering the Guru Ram Das Chant, and doing it along with Gurunam for 11 minutes, you feel high and mighty.
It's a wonderful tool for meditation!

Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

Everyone I've played this one for has commented on how good it is. Let us begin, then, by reflecting on how good a hardcore blues album issued by a hardcore blues label must be to reach out and grab a general audience. That's impressive.
I detest "Plays like a girl" thinking; the all-too-common notion among male musicians that women play differently by virtue of their gender. In all the catalogs and music stores I've perused, I have never seen any instruments (well, a couple of microphones configured for different vocal range) designed differently for men and women. There does seem to be, however, a stronger focus on attack in the intros of songs arranged and produced by women, so maybe there's a different outlook on some facets of music associated with a player with big ovaries than with a player with big testes.
In any event, the first song on Can't Find No Heaven, "Big Boss Man," is the most familiar, and it opens with a ferocious piano reminiscent of Saffire's great Ann Rabson. That's where the listener is grabbed and at no point while the record plays is the listener turned loose. This CD is a blueprint for creating a fine record. More than half the songs are covers, some familiar, some obscure, all outstanding. The Alice Stuart originals are obviously the best she's got, the ones she as a passionate blues purist believes can stand beside the work of Skip James, Furry Lewis and 'Mississippi' Fred McDowell. Blues musicians - think this way while making recording plans and you'll end up with a better CD. Ms. Stuart also thinks strategically in building her studio band, balancing veteran bandstand partners with studio guests who are in the top percentile of their instruments' proponents. Duffy Bishop, as legitimate a claimant to Janis Joplin's old crown as anyone out there, lends her pipes to one tune. Paul DeLay, certainly among the Top 20 blues harmonicists today, adds his intricate energies to three of the album's 11 cuts. Acoustic guitarist Terry Robb, whose fourth album I look forward to digging into for myself and for readers shortly, keeps it deep on a trio of Can't Find No Heaven cuts. Personnel decisions like these are also part of a recipe for the best possible recording.
Again, Ms. Stuart is a purist, so pure that her blues sounds like folk and like other "roots" forms, which is why it attracts listeners of all persuasions. It is as close to Steeleye Span as to John Hammond, which means that it is as close to Jethro Tull as to Johnny Winter. Her treatments are as important as her material and personnel choices, but musicians need not take notes on her treatments, as they are matters of personal tastes and it is unlikely that any two musicians will have exactly the same tastes. Ms. Stuart just got lucky and passed her luck along to purchasers of this CD.

Alice is an icon whose time is yet to come. Her stage prowess and heart-felt vocals are second to none. Combine this with endless scorching guitar licks and you have talent that will not be long forgotten! Alice rocks! This c.d. is an excellent addition to a formidable list of outstanding albums put out by Alice through the years.

Tasty and smooth.......2002-08-21

While the cuts available on this CD show a strong country flavor, she really kicks some serious booty with the blues - not a lot of notes, but each one is in just the right place. This new CD is tasty! Especially "You Ruined My Life" - an instant classic. Stuart's guitar playing is the real deal - all go, not just show.

Lovers of R&B will dig it!.......2006-12-24

This is the album I've been waiting for from Acappella. The guys in this lineup bring back the younger side to Acappella, making it reminiscent of the George/Wayburn days. The beats are fresh, but they're mixed in such a way that you can tell it's vocal percussion. This, I think, is one of the greatest strengths of this album. The incredible skills of Tony Brown bring a raw, street-corner-singer quality to the album. The lyrics are deep and personal.
War with Myself - This song really sets us up for the whole tone of the album. With introspective and thoughtful lyrics and a nice low-key groove, this is one of my favorites on the album.
Dust in the Wind - The classic Kansas tune is reborn here, but the original isn't lost in this A Capella style favorite. Another soulful hit.
Dime Rhyme Segue - Break out your beat-box on this one. Makes you think.
One Ragged Angel - Continuing the theme of the "homeless angel" from the previous track, this song makes me think about how to see God working in all things, and how there's always an opportunity to glorify him. Great beat, great lyrics, great melody.
They Are the Roses - a hauntingly beautiful song, "They Are the Roses" is a touching reminder of the responsibility we've been given to raise up our children in a godly way. It really puts things into perspective.
Emergency - This song has an awesome, original beat with a slightly Salsa flavor. Another reminder of why God has placed us on earth.
You Are There - My personal favorite on this album, and, for me, ranks right up next to the quintessential "Rescue." Absolutely incredible vocals on this one, especially the second verse.
Glory and Honor - this song is a reminder of what we're doing all of this for - a hopeful look at what God has in store for us. I can't wait! The tight harmonies here highlight the skills of the group.
Y.R.A.G Radio Segue - This is just plain fun. This must have been the result of letting Gary Evans play with the recording equipment (and is the lowest bass part on the planet.)
Gone Away - Another hopeful song with a great beat. Of all the songs on the album, this one sounds the most like Keith Lancaster and the older style of Acappella. You'll find yourself running to the slip cover to get all the lyrical parts, since the vocals kind of bounce off one another. Technically masterful with a great message.
Take Me There - "I've got my bags packed and I'm ready to take flight." Every time I hear this one I can't help but smile. Strong vocals on this one, smooth beat, and encouraging message.
Give Me Jesus - This song is a wonderful closer, and really brings you into the room with the singers. There are some incredible harmonies going on in this straight A Capella piece that I'm still trying to figure out. By the way, those aren't violins in the background, either! Great use of volume and tone.

I almost feel like a traitor to the previous Acappella releases, but this is my favorite album of theirs. Above "Rescue", "Set Me Free," and "Spirituals," it is a must-have in my collection.
