4 out of 5 stars Oh come on, it's not that bad.......2006-05-18

About a year ago I decided to go visit some nearby pawn shops to look for a drum set. While I didn't find the drum set, I noticed that this CD was pretty much ubiquitous throughout the stores. I later noticed it for (re) sale at Goodwill and decided to give the album another listen to see why people hate it so much and are so willing to sell it.

Frankly, I don't really get it. Half the album sounds exactly like "Unbelievable" so it seems like the people who bought it after hearing that single (probably like 90%) would like the rest of the material. It's great, poppy-as-hell, alt-dance music. I listened to it again today and noticed all the layering that they did. In a way that's similar to an album which gets slightly better reviews but is still slightly controversial, "Smile" by Brian Wilson, hooks and themes are repeated throughout the CD. Some call this repetitive. I agree, however, in the way that it's presented it is really quite creative. I think EMF sort of broke the mold for pop acts at the time and are still more or less an oddity that deserves real attention. For all you naysayers, give this CD another chance, preferably on a large stereo so you can hear all the layers. I'm just hoping that someday it gets produced as a 5.1 DVD audio, I think it would be a great candidate for that format.

5 out of 5 stars Schubert sounds better when dipped.......2005-07-19

What a great dollar deal! This C.D. from EMF holds many wonders besides the featured hit "Unbelievable", and is worth getting at regular price too by the way. This outgoing British band's music frequently includes rhythmic fuzz-beep progressions, poets speaking in the background, piano melodies, and more. All sorts of genres are used, with eerie tunes like "Long Summer Days", calmer pieces like "Girl Of An Age", and exciting upbeat songs like "Longtime". Much to my liking, this album has much less language than the follow-up Stigma and has many more likeable tracks. I would most recommend "Unbelievable", which has some random guy speaking in the background, cowbells, forceful piano chords, and even a bit of rap. The tunes on Schubert Dip are very well-constructed and fun to listen to, which is why I would give it a full five star rating.
I recommend:
Children
Long Summer Days
When You're Mine
Traveling Not Running
I Believe
Unbelievable
Girl Of An Age
Admit It
Lies

1 out of 5 stars Electro-hippy britty movement=Barrels of laughs.......2005-06-13

Shubert Dip? Does anyone find that album title to be dirty? It sounds so sleazy. But it's kind of fitting for a band that bamboozles 15 bucks out of unsuspecting music buyers expecting more songs like "Unbelievable".

Like everyone else has said, the only good song on here is "Unbelievable". Someone else here compared this one-hit wonder band to the likes of Coldplay and Travis. Maybe it's so easy to compare EMF to Coldplay because they are one hit wonders as well. I can't even remember the name of Coldplay's popular single (but I do know its ultra-repetitive and annoying 10-second piano melody that is played over and over for five minutes). And I've never even heard of Travis. That should tell that reviewer something. The singer for EMF has no range whatsoever, and never raises or lowers the tone of his voice... just like Chris Martin of Coldplay. Only, EMF's singer sounds more like a Pet Shop Boy.

My suggestion for anyone who loves this crap is to get Jesus Jones' album Doubt (with the great song "Right Here, Right Now"), and the Soup Dragons' Love God (with the fabulous 'Stones cover "I'm Free"). Either that, or save your money for a few albums that have more than one good song on them.

In closing: Anybody else notice their DJ calls himself MILF? It's slang for "Mother I'd Like to Fu*ck". Seriously.

2 out of 5 stars Eh...mostly forgettable.......2004-02-16

I've never had any crushing biases against "boy bands". It's just that...well, there's a reason most of them are flashes in the pan, and Schubert Dip is a classic example. Unbelievable, of course, is the big selling point; the rest of album is mostly bland and forgettable. There just isn't any variety or creativity here. Of course, it doesn't help that the singer has a *really* limited vocal range; okay for Unbelievable, doom for an entire album. Ultimately, Schubert Dip is a typical by-the-numbers potboiler that's...well, mostly forgettable.

2 out of 5 stars Dated Alt Pop.......2002-07-27

EMF are the schlock pop hooligans responsible for the catchy `Unbelievable'. I suppose that if you must have that little curio there is nothing for it, but believe me, that is all EMF ever did. I still remember the big controversy over what their name meant, of course, nowadays no one even remembers their name.

I bought this recording a few years ago after hearing about it on National Public Radio. The monks vocal abilities are outstanding, it is truly ethereal. As Thupten Nyandak, Assistant Director of the monastery says: `It is a sound offering to whom we are praying', and a wonderful offering to the human listener.

    Album Description

Music was originally a communal act. It was utilitarian and, in a way, magic - it made work easy. Music was also a reflection of the nascent social order, with one lead voice and the rest responding. The first solo music was therefore a powerful act of liberation, of spirit. This recording contains a great diversity of solos; more than a millennium separates the oldest from the most recent; there are solos for flutes, reeds, brass, lutes, zithers, fiddles, piano, percussion, and voice; the music comes from the Near East, the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. But despite the contrast of instruments and styles, what gradually becomes apparent is the similarity beneath the surface of these works. Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo suggests that there is some fundamental distinction about the way musicians express themselves in a solo setting - something that defines the Art of the Solo.

This is some of the most personally felt music the world's greatest traditions have to offer. If the act of making music is a personal one, so too is listening. Music was always meant to be listened to - by other people, or by something else, whether you call it God or nature or by another name. And that is the reason for Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo. Because after all, music can be performed alone, and heard alone, but it is still a communal art, meant to be shared. Perhaps it only truly becomes music when it is shared.

One of Soul Asylum's best, for sure. "Artificial Heart" is amazing...in fact, there isn't a bad song on here.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for an EP of leftovers.......2005-05-07

I didn't really fully appreciate the joke behind Clam Dip and Other Delights until I found my father's old vinyl copy of Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights.

The cover has the same graphics and the synopsis written on the back is derived from the same writing style of whoever wrote the notes on the back of Whipped Cream and Other Delights. And the naked Karl on the cover doesn't really help you take them any more serisously. The weird thing was, Herb Alpert was the president of A&M at the time that this was released from Twin/Tone. The fact that Soul Aslyum signed a contract with A&M proves either one of two things: 1) Alpert didn't care or 2) he never noticed.

So on to the music: these are all things that got scrapped from the Hang Time album in 1988. And considering that everything here fell by the wayside during those sessions, this EP is pretty consistent (perhaps unintentionally so). P-9 is similar to Twidlee Dee, which probably explains its exclusion from Hang Time. Artificial Heart is probably the most experimental the band ever became with all the disjointed riffs and straightfoward vocal delivery from Dave Pirner. Take It To The Root is funk-racket. Secret No More and Just Plain Evil are pretty standard punk-pop from Minneapolis, but Chains should have made the cut for Hang Time.

All in all, not bad at all. But the artwork makes it all worthwhile. To me, it's a riot because I think Herb Alpert is/was a joke.

    4 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!.......2005-04-05

This is early Soul Asylum at their best. I like every song, but "Secret No More" is the weakest track. They really mix their hard-edge with their pop on this EP. The two tracks that stand out the most are "Artificial Heart" (which is a tongue-in-cheek song about an assault on a woman with an artificial heart), and "P-9". I highly recommend this EP. It's worth the money.

    3 out of 5 stars some good songs...worth getting.......2004-12-20

There a few good songs on this...its worth getting just for the song P9

4 out of 5 stars pretty hot for a throwaway.......2002-06-08

This was a collection of leftovers from when Soul Asylum moved from twin tone to A+M, but they found some good stuff - take it to the root is an out and out frenzy - SA at their best and artificial heart is just too cool.

      Product Description

We are pleased to present in a 3 CD boxed set edition, Sacred Ceremonies: Ritual Music of Tibetan Buddhism. The Sacred Ceremonies series began in 1989, by recording artist David Parsons, when he traveled to Dharamsala, India to experience the mystical sounds of Tibetan ritual music. He was received by the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery School and given permission to incorporate his DAT recordings of their rituals into his 1990 album of original music, Yatra (18072-2). In return for the monks' kindness, Parsons decided to release selected Dip Tse Chok Ling ceremonial performances in their original state. The results were first released in 1990 on Sacred Ceremonies: Ritual Music of Tibetan Buddhism (17074-2). Portions of this first volume were used by directors Oliver Stone in his film Heaven & Earth and Bernardo Bertolucci in Little Buddha. When Parsons returned to Dharamsala in 1990 as part of a documentary film crew, he found that the Dip Tse Chok Ling monks had been practicing for another album. He was amazed at the difference between the two recording sessions. "The first time, they didn't understand why anyone would want to listen to what they did," Parsons recalls. "I also had to explain a lot about the recording techniques, and we had to keep rearranging the instruments to get a nice stereo image. It took three months to get the right recording. This time, the monks didn't need to be told anything. They set up completely by themselves. I just went down there, turned on the DAT and recorded Sacred Ceremonies 2 (17079-2) in a couple of hours." In their third album, Sacred Ceremonies 3 (13132-2), the monks of Dip Tse Chok Ling selected prayers to honor the memory of Lama Tashi Gyaltsen, founder of the present day monastery, and the Dalai Lama, in celebration of his 60th birthday. They also honor and dedicate this volume to all Tibetan people.

Alabama State Mass really scored a winner with this one! The songs are traditional without being stale, the choir sings with energy, the band is awesome without being overpowering, and the sound quality is excellent! Not a weak cut on this album that gets better with every listen, and a worthy addition to any gospel collection.

As a Die Hard Hip/Hop fan and analyst I love what Freak Nasty has created. His style is not the ordinary lyric and simple beat rap style that we hear everyday. He gives us an extraordinary style with fun and hip beats that will set him apart from other producers and right up there with the best. This song "DA DIP" is nothing less then great, the whole family can enjoy it.

Freak Nasty obviously has the right formula to make a hit song and I understand that his new album is full of songs equally great if not better than "DA DIP" I can't wait to buy it, due to be released in June 2002.

Let all stress just melt away as you sit back with a cool drink, dip your feet in the warm crystal water and drift away under the endless sky… The perfect soundtrack for socializing, intimate nights, yoga or just chillin'.

"If you like music with a Balearic/Cafe del Mar sort of vibe, the latest compilation by producers David & Steve Gordon (BUDDHA-LOUNGE, CAFE DE LUNA) will have you reaching for the volume dial with one hand and a bottle of suntan lotion with the other. The grooves are kept at a comfortable low simmer throughout the course of the album, giving the whole non-stop block a breezy, summery feel. This would be a great album to have playing by the poolside or while hanging out at the beach. Most of the tracks favor nylon string guitars and smooth ambience as their principle instrumentation, while mild trip-hop beats give the album a nice, leisurely pace. A few of the tracks have vocals incorporated that likewise fit a "sunset on the beach" atmosphere. ~ Music Design In Review

      2 out of 5 stars Too Chilly.......2007-03-09

I usually really enjoy Chill music, but this one just left me cold.

1 out of 5 stars Not tropical .......2007-02-17

There is no music in this Cd that you would ever hear in the islands.
This is one of the worst cds I have listened to. It is absolutely
boring. The songs are boring and dull. I would not recommend it.

      1 out of 5 stars Pure Fluff...*puke*.......2006-01-31

Ok...this label really is putting out some of the fluffiest music in new age/chillout. I think they should stick with the new age stuff like garden of serenity and chakra in my back pocket. Please stop putting out wallpaper music...

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Tropical Vacation !!!!.......2005-08-20

I LOVE this CD!!! I originally found this through iTunes and bought it digitally, but I just had to have he CD too. The music on this Sequoia Groove outing ranges from upbeat and whimsical tiki lounge music to smooth cool chill-out with a bit of Caribbean jazz thrown into the mix. My favorites are Win Meyerson's Feriado (Island Mix) and 66 Answers to 33 Questions from Urs Fuchs. Also beautiful tracks from David Gordon and Artemisia. This is perfect summer driving music or for listening to at the beach or poolside. I played it at a recent BBQ gathering and my friends just soaked it up and loved it. It's the perfect chillout lounge mix for summer. Grab a long cool tropical drink with an umbrella in it and let your ears swim in the warm musical waters of this wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Dissolving The Visualization.......2005-10-12

"Awsome" is literally how you would describe the Tibetan ritual musics on this record, but then that word doesn't even come close. At times you can actually visualize the skull cracking open. "Auspicious Sounds Of Instruments In Nine Repetitions" in particuar is just amazing. It's probably where everything comes to a boil. Through the music you can really visualize how connected the Dip Tse Chok Ling monks are to various netherworlds. The monks use a wide range of instruments from the kangling(thighbone trumpet) and conchs to the monstrous longhorns. The percussion is quite intense as well, sounding like all manner of chaos descending in one fell plummet. This is not your typical world/new age music. This is intense, dissonant and unpredictable drone music for purposes of magick ritual. By the way it lurches one minute and soars the next, it's almost an entity unto itself.

In a bad mood? Then just slip on this cd. Pucho is groovy, funky, jazzy and just plain jumpin. This could very well be his best cd.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone needs a little Pucho!.......2002-08-17

Mix a little Willie Bobo with some James Brown and add a wee bit of Cubanismo with some garnishes of Soul and Mambo and you will be getting close to Pucho. A must have CD for any collection. Pucho will keep you moving.

      4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2000-09-13

One of Pucho's better efforts. "Ritmo Nueva York", a rare vocal number, is the highpoint.

This album is hoppin. A latin jazz version of Sex Machine....what more can you ask for. I used to play this at work and it moved things along.
