4 out of 5 stars Colourbox, finally!.......2004-10-17

When I was taking classes in London (1985), one of the albums being listened to in the dorms was this one -- the torch track "The Moon is Blue" was the theme music for many a fling and failed romance among the first year students at Westfield College. Back in the states, I periodically tried to find it on CD, usually missing my chance when it did appear on rare listings. Now it's back and I'm grabbing it! Who says "you can't find your blue moon.." again? -- RhB

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant slice of 80s' English indie music.......2002-08-18

The thing that made Colourbox(aka the Brothers Young) so brilliant was the fact that they were making music that was not only quirky but danceable. Being on a label that also had the Cocteau Twins,Dead can Dance and the Wolfgang Press, one is almost forced to stand out..
Better than Yello. Better than They Might Be Giants,Colourbox made sampling fun and music,in general, groovy. My first introduction to them was at a now long forgotten nightclub here in Chicago called Medusa's where the DJ played "Manic" every chance he/she could back in '85-86,with the crowd going completely .... Listening to it now may connote a bit of cheesy 80's synth-nostalgia,but at the end of the day, tracks like "Just give him Whiskey","Say You" Arena",Sex Gun" and the aforementioned "Manic" let you remember that not all good synth-pop tunes came from Depeche Mode,Bronski Beat or Scriitti Politti.. These guys (along with Lorita Grahame's vocals) were using guitars WAY before Depeche ever decided to infuse it into thier repoitoire. Long story short: if you can find the vinyl/CD of this LP that has "Manic II" on it as well as "Sex Gun" you're in for quite a treat....

4 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time.......2002-01-20

When one listens to trance, trip hop, or other Rave genre music, of today it is evident that Colorbox was simply way ahead of their time. This is a fun CD, and had a ton of great dubs from diverse sources (from Disney's Pinocchio's 'Honest John': "If we play our cards right we'll be on easy street" to spagetti westerns "looks like we're shy one horse."

The guest female vocals add great flavor. Even after all these years, its easy to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A flawed masterpiece.......2003-05-18

Colourbox always underestimated themselves. They saw their music as a career option which possibly accounts for their easy lapse into soul and dub ballads to pay their bills when their genius should have lead to better things. 'Arena' was a Bond theme looking for a film and maybe that was what they were looking for when they could have been to the mid 80s what St Etienne were to the late 80s and beyond. One hopes that they made it into advert and film music rather than going back to pen pushing in a government office or something. The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme was used by the BBC (I think) in 2002 so I hope they finally get recognition for their prescience.

3 out of 5 stars ambivalent old fart weighs in.......2002-08-15

Colourbox has a spot near and dear to my heart despite (or perhaps partly because of) their minuscule discography. The Best of Colourbox CD is a rather ridiculous project considering that everything they ever did could easily fit onto such a CD. Yet somehow, with almost no choices to be made, this BoC CD isn't outstanding; the producers managed to pick some of the poorer versions of songs and then rearrange their order so that they no longer work the way the artists intended them to. I therefore agree with the majority opinion posted thusfar: As a Colourbox fan who has all their stuff on vinyl, this CD is a disappointment. However, unlike those reviewers, I would hazard a guess that people discovering Colourbox via this CD will enjoy it greatly and be less biased by history. My 3 star rating reflects my ambivalence: 2 stars for me and 4 for my hypothetical younger listener.

2 out of 5 stars What a DISASTER!.......2002-04-28

OK, let's get this straight. 'Philip Glass' was previously on a CD compilation called 'Give Peace A Dance Vol 2 - The Ambient Collection' in the UK. But it really doesn't matter if it's been on CD before or not, because the track is not particularly inspired anyway. 'Breakdown' original version, though, has never been on CD, and it would have probably been better if it had stayed that way, since it is rather dreadful IMHO. Why was it selected for a 'BEST OF'? Should've included the brilliant second version instead. 'World Cup Theme' 7" version has seen its first time on CD, but who cares when the superior 12" version is already available on one of the two Colourbox CD's before? You should seek out one of those if you want to find out more about this grossly underrated band. As for this fiasco... let's just pretend that it never happened.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone's a critic!.......2002-04-22

Despite everthing and everyone trying to release a "Best Of" or "Remix" of some kind, I think that this release is very good and a fine introduction to an incredibly underrated band from the 4AD roster. To correct a previously mentioned error, the song "Phillip Glass" was NEVER available on CD and neither is the original version of "Breakdown", both gratuitously added in this collection, including the video for "Pump Up The Volume". This is a fine restrospective of work from a very overlooked, yet critical band in music.

2 out of 5 stars A Tragic Non-Event.......2001-12-08

Quite dubiously, the 4AD label web site states that the album has been "compiled and remastered by Martyn and Steven Young". Let's face it - how often does a band like Colourbox get the chance to release a cd these days? It is unbelievable that they should pass up such an opportunity to make the most of it, by incoporating material that represents their most creative yet accessible work, or maybe even something more challenging, dare I suggest. Any one or more of the following would have made this a less dismal effort at compiling a "Best Of Colourbox" : 'Say You', 'Punch' (both 12" single A-sides), Fast Dump, Sex Gun, Manic II or even some b-sides such as 'Keep On Pushing'(remix). As it is, the only track that is truly "previously unavailable on cd" is the 'Official Colourbox World Cup Theme 7". What a waste.

Colourbox deserves better than this.

        4 out of 5 stars DJ Trevor makes a fine tech-progressive mix.......2002-04-03

In 2000, everything seemed to go post-trance, didn't it, trendie mags fleeing to hard house as the glammed up new girl and DJs breaking away from the I-have-seen-the-light buildups for the stripped sounds of progressive house. With our superstar Euro-spinners luring listeners to break-free, bottom-end grooves Colourbox and DJ Trevor felt it's about time to showcase their impression on the scene with "Let's Progress."

And it goes something like this; snip the funky pieces of prog and the heartier dub cuts around, rewire with tech-house sensibility. Think Craig Richards, Tyrant, and Slam playing a bit deeper and you get the idea; not as the packaging and press release proclaim to offer, but surely a refreshing dance floor hybrid for ears tired of the musical retread pushed daily. Even better, only serious aficionados will recognize the artists involved (except the obligatory Timo Maas.) That polished slice of mayhem - RR Workshop's "Brainfloss," and that sinister Closure" has Slide's handiwork all over it. No excuse for that junk remix of "Androids" though, the lone clunker.

Come to think of it, there's nothing really progressive housey about this at all. But when you bounce as hard as this who cares what label applies.
