There are songs designed for listening, for dancing, and for singing in the shower--Bring It Back hits all the bases. For their Barsuk Records debut, husband and wife duo Kori (vocals, organ) and Jason (vocals, drums) kick up more of an exuberant ruckus than ever before. They may be a twosome, but over a dozen musicians guest on their fuller-sounding fourth album, including infant daughter Magnolia (kazoo and "singing," i.e. cooing). Nicknamed "Bubs," she's also name-checked on "Like You Crazy" ("Bubs noticing bees in the air"). While the Gardner-Hammels aren't exactly competing with the sprawling Polyphonic Spree for "big band" supremacy, they do employ a choir on "Running Out," while additional instruments include bass ("Beautiful Dreamer"), trumpet ("For the Actor"), guitar ("Punchlines"), and viola ("Nature and the Wreck"). The centerpiece of their high-spirited sound, however, remains their irresistible hooks and exquisite harmonies, put to best effect on the stuttering "Fraud in the '80s" and bouncy "Beautiful Dreamer." Sometimes Kori takes the lead ("Running Out"), sometimes Jason ("What It Means"), but their voices are so tuned into each other that it's hard to pick a favorite (unlike most dual-vocalist bands where one inevitably outshines the other). Like the Beach Boys and the Turtles at their most euphoric, Bring It Back bursts with all the joy and vigor listeners have come to expect--and more of it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Mates of State's unique, often complex, and always catchy pop gems defy genre boundaries. This husband/wife duo has released three previous full-lengths as well as numerous singles and EPs. Though a duo, they never fail to generate an abundance of melody and harmony via monster, bass-heavy organ, creative drumming, and alternately lushly layered and playfully dueling vocals. "Bring It Back" is Mates Of State at their complex yet lighthearted best: impeccably layered music that rewards attention, analysis, and repeated listens, but that's also instantly enchanting, drawing you in at once with hook upon incredible hook.

I don't know who the hell these people are, but I spent the last hour figuring out where to get that song "For the Actor" and I am ordering this CD. Its the song in the ATT commercial. I can't get it out of my head.

5 out of 5 stars whatev.......2007-06-01

im not here to persuade anyone here since what i write is not going to be at all convincing. i am simply a music lover who has found a great deal of fondness in this mates of state album. i read elsewhere that the duo suffers from the fact that their sound becomes tedious in the second half of the cd because of the lack of instruments. i found this to be completely ridiculous considering if you like the sound in the beginning you will not be lead to disappointment in the end. my favorite tracks actually dont come until near the end of the cd, in the songs "so many ways" and "running out". so many ways just has lyrics that i connected to and their great sound comes through very well here. in running out their sound is probably at its best in my opinion putting kori's voice on display as she brings tears to the heavy hearted with her angelic voice and touch. and i just know for a fact that while i watched them in concert at the great american music hall in san francisco each song was splendidly performed and i have never been more impressed with such a small group of talent. i just hope you dont limit their level of talent in your minds simply because of the limited amount of instruments being used. just needed to make sure i stuck up for them. they are great and should be celebrated.

4 out of 5 stars Indie-flavored pop songs delivered with lovable enthusiasm and irresistible spirit.......2007-04-20

I originally began this review by describing Mates of State as Yo La Tengo with no guitars, better vocals, and catchier melodies, but after listening to "Bring it Back" a few more times, I now realize that description is unfair to both bands. Mates' husband and wife duo of Kori Gardner (vocals, keyboards) and Jason Hammel (drums, vocals) are not as innovative or experimental as the Hoboken indie legends (who oddly enough, also feature a married couple). That said, Mates of State do succeed in creating a unique sonic landscape from which exuberant pop nuggets emerge.

The impossibly catchy opening track, "Think Long," presents a good idea what to expect from the rest of the album: a simple yet full-sounding organ and drums combo that merges 80s pop sensibilities with indie spirit. Highlights include the energetic "Fraud in the 80s," the doo-wop inspired "Like You Crazy," the lovely piano ballad "Nature and the Wreck" (which features a gurgling cameo by the Mates' newborn daughter Magnolia), and the wistful closing track "Running Out." There are missteps, to be sure; lyrics such as "I just want the feel of tasting the meal" are awkward, and the "Nothing and everything" chant in "So Many Ways" wears thin quickly. But overall, this is a highly listenable collection of indie-flavored pop songs, delivered with lovable enthusiasm and irresistible spirit.

"Bring it Back" is my first encounter with Mates of State, but it definitely won't be my last.

4 out of 5 stars Adorable Minimalist Drum-and-Keyboard Duo are Fun and Invigorating.......2007-03-07

The Mates of State's fourth album, Bring it Back, is one of calculated endearment. The constituent husband-wife duo (Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel) has meticulously crafted a straightforward album of wholesome, almost exclusively drum-and-keyboard 80's-revival ditties. There's a slight variety of different sounds on the album, but they're generally just synthesizers thinly veiled as instruments. Such cheeseball routines usually irritate my intestinal tract too much to invoke any real emotion, so credit the sporadic euphoria of this album to suspension of disbelief. Lasting suspension of disbelief.

The songs range from midtempo piano ballads to shuddering pop anthems but are unified by their smooth, cyclic songwriting. Energetic as the Mates may often be, they're anything but schizophrenic; they have no reservations about reiterating a cute tune (and even sticking to the same accompanying lyrics) several more times than you'd expect. Consequently, transitions into choruses and bridges feel a tad epochal, especially when they involve the introduction of a new layer of percussion or a particularly catchy variation on a riff.

Unfortunately, the Mates don't always capitalize on this strength. Their penchant for understated minimalism makes them masters at building up potential energy, but the value of the anticipation is lost when the songs don't explode. The weakest songs on Bring It Back feature a promising tune and just enough direction that the listener can't avoid hoping for a nonexistent destination of buzzing, crescendo'd synthesizers and heavy drums. Frankly, the Mates are too damn clever to write the kind of bare-bone serenades that fill in the cracks of most great albums. It kills me that they're apparently so interested in being respected that they'd ever squander their almost mathematical liveliness. It's not a question of melodies, which are consistently charming throughout the album; it's a question of execution. These could have been ten remarkable dance-mix worthy tracks. Instead, the album's merely peppered with inevitable highlights in which the impetus holds up to the assurance of repetition- the most obviously superb of which is "Fraud in the `80s" which so far takes the cake for 2006's own "Don't You Forget About Me."

Don't get me wrong about the ineffectuality of serenades or the synthetic nature of the instrumentation - the band is far from lacking in emotional foundations. Sure, the music can seem a little insensitive in its dainty cruise control, but the vocals provide the true spirit of the record. Gardner's thin, liquid inflections and Hammel's flat barks constantly add a unique rhythmic tension by singing over, interrupting and harmonizing with one another. Somehow, it always ends up being constructive rather than destructive for the given song's identity. It's as much due to this chemistry as to the Mates' technical prowess that the album occasionally hits that glorious, not-familiar-enough sense of empowerment.

The album's concept is an appealing one; our culture needs to get people comfortable with unabashed glee and shame-free dancing again. These days, musical fun generally takes too much work and inspires too much self-consciousness to actually be that, well, "fun." So yeah, the Mates of State occasionally trip up or aspire to greater heights than they have the capacity to achieve, but they get a high five from me for tipping their hat to the best days of danceable pop, and taking a noble stab at bringing it back.

5 out of 5 stars Better on the Barsuk side.......2007-01-12

I agree with my fellow fans who rated this album highly. This album is truly the best Mates of State have put out. However, one must take into account that Mates are now signed with Barsuk, one of the best Indie labels. I like all the other albums, but I really connected with this album from the first listen. I like every song on this album, but I can see why a someone may not like it. Anyone with an ear for good Indie music should hear that this album is truly a masterpiece. "Fraud in the 80's" would have to be my favorite on this album.

One of the better known southern rock bands of the 1970s, The Outlaws enjoyed some moderate success with hits like "There Goes Another Love Song." Following in the tradition of practically every band who had a contract at that time, The Outlaws released an obligatory live album in 1978. Their harmonies, both vocal and guitar, held up pretty well on stage, as evidenced by the before mentioned "Love Song," and "Freeborn Man," as well as "I Hope You Don't Mind." "Hurry Sundown," another Outlaws classic gets an equally fine treatment. But of course, the real meat comes at the end of the show with "Green Grass and High Tides." Taking a cue from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," The Outlaws wrote an epic of their own. "Green Grass" starts as an up-tempo country croon, but it's not long before they let the hammer down. As was de rigueur, the band pulls out all the era's stops, throwing drum breaks, dueling guitar leads that go on for about three days, and several false endings into the pot before The Big Finish. It's a great documented moment of a band at the height of both its own powers, and those of an entire era. --Steve Gdula

This is the Outlaws best album! The more I listen to it, to more I enjoy it- from the great percusion to the truly amazing guitars. I have a hard time with some of the folksy, California country music vibe of some of the studio albums- but thats not a problem with this live recording. If you only buy one Outlaw album- this is the one to get!

5 out of 5 stars Four guitars on Green Grass and High Tides - what more could you want?.......2007-02-03

The front cover says it all - yes, this band really did have FOUR guitarists. When it works well, the results are stunning.

So far as I'm aware, this 1978 offering is one of two live Outlaws CDs, the other being the (now hard-to-find) 'Hittin the Road Live' (1993). Don't worry if you can't get the latter, as this album is by far the better of the two.

The reason most people would buy this CD is, of course, for the finale, a mind-blowing 21-minute live version of "Green Grass and High Tides", a track which is surely a strong contender for "best-ever guitar-driven rock track". Though necessarily slightly less polished than the studio version, the live recording much more than makes up for this by the fresh atmosphere and excitement which it brings to this truly awesome epic.

20 minute Jam? You are too busy to pay attention for twenty minutes
Please don't bother. No amount of self indulgence is worth 20 minutes of your precious time. And by the way, they really aren't enjoying themselves either.

Unbelivable, I've also owned this in multiple formats and can't imagine not having it in my collection. It's Southern, it's rock , it's perfect.

Great, for those who love good southern hard rock from the 70's. Could have been top 5 stars if remix was of better quality : not all guitars can be listened to distinctly !!

5 out of 5 stars Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21

Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.

And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).

****

5 out of 5 stars This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.

1 out of 5 stars pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here

4 out of 5 stars Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30

This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.

5 out of 5 stars Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06

John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

4 out of 5 stars bring it back--again and again and again... (4.5 stars).......2005-08-05

bernard butler is horrifically underappreciated, especially here in the states. with the likes of 3 doors down, creed, good charlotte and the rest of these so-called 'guitar bands,' ruining the airwaves, churning out three chord songs with the distortion raised to ridiculous and silly levels, it's refreshing to see how someone like butler (who understands what it means to be a guitar player), a genuine guitar virtuoso, coaxes such beautiful sounds from his axe. great guitar players don't necessarily play earth-shattering eddie van halen-esque solos (though bernard certainly could). john lennon said, 'i may not be the best technical guitar player, but i can make a guitar move' (or something like that). it's an edict butler understands well and incorporates into m&b's newest album.

the intro 'theme from...' is a corker. and as someone mentioned, it probably *is* the best opening track to an album since 'introducting the band' off 'dog man star.' i get all giddy when david whispers 'this is a microphone check -- the microphone is working' before bernard kicks in with that buzzsaw guitar of his. 'falling' revisits 'yes' from 'the sound of...' yet it's no pale imitation. it's a huge song, something that might come out of motown were the motor city still the r&b hub of the universe and a great showcase for david's vocals.

the marriage of bluesy singer and rock guitarist may seem an odd combination, but just like alison moyet ('the voice') and vince clark (uber-geeky synth god) made yazoo work so well, david and bernard are a match made in audio heaven. this is a fine collection of songs ranging from the breathtaking 'blue' to the r&b inspired 'bring it back.' david mcalmont proves he's a voice to be reckoned with and bernard butler once again proves he's rock's greatest axeman. one gets the feeling that the album is something of a game of one-ups-manship. mcalmont trying to outdo butler, butler trying to outdo mcalmont. however, i believe this ultimately makes the album that much better: each player brings out the best in his partner, the end result a thrilling, vital, energetic, passionate recorded penned by two incredible musicians.

it's definitely worth the import price, and here's hoping we see mcalmont and butler part III sometime in the future.

5 out of 5 stars I admit..I only found out about this classic album recently.......2005-04-28

The pairing of Ex "Suede" member "Bernard Butler" & Vocalist "David McAlmont" wasn't the most anticipated singer/songwriter duo of the 90's, but after a fairly promising debut (1996's "The Sound of McAlmont & Butler"), and subsequent falling out...it was clear that they were a talented Pair. After resolving their differences, they would return in 2002 with their second long player "Bring It Back" an album of Spector-esque sweeping grandiose soul, which is far in advance of their promising debut and the combination of Butler's astonishing guitar work & McAlmont proving to be the truly capable singer that he is, this work, is one of a duo that have spent their time apart becoming far more confident and capable musicians.

First track "The Theme from McAlmont and Butler" is a surging power neo-Soul belter, with the track starting gently and a voice intro warning "This is the birth....here come the strings, Mix it all in?and let the story begin", (cue string section), and a blazing distorted guitar tears in, soaring beats make their presence known, and builds (almost aggressively) until the soaring chorus (sung by both) kicks in, harmonising "Oh oh sing me that song Let the music play let the band play on....Oh oh sing me that song till I'm gone". Its a breathtaking moment and one that I've heard rarely replicated with so much gusto and enthusiasm, its a furious Rock / Soul workout of pure brilliance.

"Falling" starts with a heavy Kick drum, and swirling keyboards, mixed with an uplifting backing choir powering along, before dropping tempo and becoming more restrained, with McAlmont intoning: "Feeling lost and I don't wanna be here, Burning up inside the atmosphere, If I should spread my wings I could fly away...But I don't wanna stay up here all night", before the song explodes again for the chorus....the backing vocalist's are marvellous here, and the feel of Nu-Soul stylings is spread all over this track.

"Different Strokes", lends an almost Hip-Hop styled beat, thereby which a sophisticated pairing of harmonica and orchestra laden soul searching begins driving the sound...the theme on this track is the idea of people own mistakes not being held against them, with McAlmont singing "We paint with different strokes, From time to time we're broke, But I'm a simple man...Take me for what I am", before sliding into some wonderfully slick 70's 'Marvin Gaye-esque' Motown backbeat soul...with amplified guitar pounding away in the background, with lashing of overearnest chorus bringing this to a satisfying close.

"Can We make it?", is arguably the most FM Radio friendly track on here, yet don't let that make you dismiss this track, as the Soul/Rock hybrid is in full force here (probably designed to snag listeners of both genres). With naggingly upbeat guitars (Butler really is an exceptional guitarist, throughout this album), completely ignoring any of the bland production that trips up similar acts with a full-blown 'Jimi Hendrix' guitar riffing halfway through the track that is exceptional, and the catchy chorus of "Tell me why cant we try, and make the right decision, Just one decision....Tell me why cant we try And make the right decision, Make the right one!!??"...with the some conviction and anthemic soul that signify all the best catchy radio Hits (This track wasn't a massive hit...which begs the question, why??).

"Blue"...spooky synths start this track, aimably drifting along, before gentle slide guitar (one would assume, courtesy of 'Butler') work their magic, soft harmonies are audible in the background and overlayed in a very unassuming way. This is an acoustic ballad of the most stripped-down kind, and McAlmont scaling back on the euphoric vocals, and settling with a mournful "The wind so cold don't wanna be outside, Blue be winter's grave...Shine on the town and turn the blues around....Shine on the town and turn my life around!!" to emotional effect, this the obligatory slow-paced number is excellently placed halfway down the album, to provide a change of pace from all the soaring melodies and Guitar riffing.

"Where R U Now?" uses a sampled beat to start things off, before sections of the song are interrupted with intermittent handclaps and Pedal Steel Guitar...the use of keyboard here, creates a warm sense of contemporary soul displayed here, and shows that the pair aren't completely reliant on belting melodies to highlight their expertise, and being aptly able to move between powerful arrangements & softer acoustic-lite numbers.

"Sunny Boy" maps out a combination of keyboard & Slide Guitar, which all come together to make a almost dusty Northern Soul fusion track...resolutely 'Old School' in its construction, with the warm keyboards mixed with a little percussion coming in and out of the mix, and McAlmonts lyrics are surprisingly telling..."We drove when we were wired, after talking through the night..It was good to find somebody else as crazy, And when the thunder made him high...He was a tripped out spirit child, Awake for four days at a time...", possibly pointing / or hinting to a lifestyle, that would surprise most listeners???....but the incorporation of backing choruses is superbly implemented, and the joyous nature of the track, may well disguise the ambiguous lyrics.

After the promising (but slightly disappointing) debut, the pair confidently stride past the '2-3 strong songs, the rest filler' format that blights a lot of these sorts of albums....and the combination of McAlmonts confident and incredibly durable vocals, mixed with Butlers production know-how, was always going to give this album the edge, but even more importantly, Butler's searing wah-wah guitar work, which is dramatic and incredible at the same time, as well and good use of strings, sweeping arrangements, soul-infused melodies turning into an epic collection of tracks. This really is amongst one of the finest soul albums I've had the pleasure of reviewing, Sure...it'll never quite match the timeless appeal or 'Marvin Gaye' or 'Stevie Wonder', but my god, they've delivered a truly stunning album that isn't afraid to take creative risks (and possibly the reason, why it didn't dent the album charts), and an absolute crying shame that that both parties (McAlmont & Butler) choose not to continue making albums together......tremendous stuff!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2005-01-05

McAlmont and Butler's second (and so far, last) album is just as good as the first. McAlmont's silky-smooth voice coupled with Bernard Butler's awesome guitar work and songwriting make another memorable album. My favorite songs include Bring it Back, Falling, Can We Make It?, and Blue.....essential.

        5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Pleasure.......2003-02-12

McAlmont is David McAlmont, a black vocalist with one of these creamy R&B voices tricked out with an arsenal of grunts, screams, trills, and an otherworldly falsetto. & Butler is Bernard Butler, ex-Suede guitarist and sonic Britpop architect. Bring It Back is their second collection and the best thing out right now. A masterful blend of (mostly black) pop styles of the last 30 years, Bring It Back is more than mere pastiche. McAlmont channels every slick soul man and vulnerable crooner, not to mention every Ronette and Crystal, into the sweetest, strongest vocal performance since Prince mutli-tracked himself into harmony heaven on "Adore". Butler matches him with his simplest yet most inventive playing since Suede's early days (though Bring It Back sounds nothing like his former band). What sounds retro at first - a 70's Stones shuffle (the title track), a Supremes plea ("Can We Make It?"), a visit to the Wall of Sound ("Falling") - becomes, after repeated plays, timeless. There's even a ballad, "Blue", as gorgeous as Joni Mitchell in her prime. Nothing, and I mean nothing, has given me such pleasure in this new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of 2002 (Ok actually it's THE best).......2003-01-28

Over seven years after the unlikely duo's first pair of singles (the magnificent "Yes" and "You Do") the two black sheep of the british music scene team up once again to create an eclectic mix of sublime tunes that work together extremely well despite the constant genre-shifting of the album. The lead single "Falling", a thunderously epic tune, is the obvious selling point for the album, but the album's merits can be found in every track; from the ballsy rock riffage of "Theme of" to the motown-tinged "Bring It Back" and "Different Strokes". And let's not forget the heavy groove-based R&B of "Where R U Now", the elegant singer/songwriter-esque "Blue", and the downright joyousness of "Can We Make It" (arguably the album's best track). All of the album's 10 tracks provide the careful listener with a glimpse into the deep love of all genres of music that both of these men posess. And thus, for the true music fan, the fan who indiscriminately loves music as a whole, this excellent album is for you, oh vigilant one. A superb collection of meticulously written songs, and without a doubt my favorite album of 2002.

If only she had been blessed with hit-producers, undoubtedly Betty Johnson would have remained on the charts for years, instead of the nine records that made BILLBOARD'S Top 100 between 1956 and 1959.

An absolutely perfect pitch and refreshing sound of purity. Every would-be singer should study these vocals.

This Voume 2 contains a great many "standards" and it is wonderful listening. What a talent!

        Respectfully,

        5 out of 5 stars Betty's Hits - Vol. 2.......2007-01-14

I have been looking for a cd that contains Betty's hits for a long time.
Amazon was the first site that was able to deliver the disc. Very happy with it.

1 out of 5 stars Even more disappointing..........2002-10-05

Volume one of Betty Johnson's Hits was a considerable disappointment on many fronts. One would have hoped that some of the shortcomings of that piece would have been corrected here in the subsequent "hits" package. No such luck. And to label this a "hits" package is just plain misleading. No additional hits here at all with the exception of the inclusion of "Dream", a track that was listed but not included on the volume one CD. Again, sound quality is mediocre and obviously not taken from high-generation tapes. Unfortunately, for those seeking the music of this artist, there are no other options currently available. Johnson's contribution was a notable element of the music of the 50s and deserves much better treatment than that given here.
