this cd is fantastic. fine china is a great 80's ish band ala the cure or depeche mode. what makes it greater is i had no expectations for this album. i bought it along with their other album(you make me hate music) at the rad rockers booth during creation 2004. i got this one brand new for $2.50 and the other for $3.00 what a well spent $5.50. i haven't even listened to the other cause i can't stop listening to this one. hopefully it's as good. anyways i have gotten off subject. do yourself a favor and buy this album as soon as possible. it is great. well worth every penny you will spend on it especially if you like 80's style music. an interesting fact about this band is "when the world sings" was produced by ronnie martin of joy electric and it kinda sounds like joy electric. their other album "you make me hate music" was co-produced by ronnie's brother jason martin who is in the band starflyer 59 but i haven't listened to it yet so i can't say if it sounds at all like starflyer.

Shoegazers take heart, for your craft is not dead.......2002-03-22

A quick listen to the radio will give the impression that being white, male, and younger than 30 automatically means having mis-directed anger, inflated egos, and a complete lack of songwriting ability. However, my faith in Modern Rock is restored through Fine China.

"When the World Sings" is non-threatening, hum-able fare, but stops short of being easily-forgotten bubble-gum pop. The songwriter enjoys the english language, crafting phrases that are almost startling to today's listeners who have come to expect little more than power chords and cliche lyrics. "We Rock Harder Than You Ever Knew", sung almost entirely in falsetto with an 80's english rock beat, is a juxtaposition that alone is worth the price of the album.

Morrissey, Marr, and New Order paved the road, The Ocean Blue built the car, and now Fine China are in the driver's seat. You would do well to make yourself a passenger.

What I most admire about Fine China is their ability to take 25 or 30 years of influences, and make their own sound so cohesive. If you find yourself missing the catchy and melodic songsmithing of bands like New Order, The Smiths, The Cure or The Pretenders, then you should absolutely check out the Fine China clan. Rob Withem's vocals are pristine, ethereal and beyond reproach. Add to that the New Wave beats, the luscious layered synths, the jangly guitars, and sumptious bass lines, and you've got all the makings of a definite favorite record for those that just aren't satisfied with the Top 40 drivel.

Well, clearly my best friend and I are utter loons for Fine China. While this is their first release on a "known" label, this synth pop outfit has actually been around for a couple years now. Several of their releases were available for awhile from Velvet Blue Music; it's very interesting to note their evolution from a paradoxically subtle guitar-driven pop to a more radio-friendly, yet still marvelously elegant, electronic sound. Check these guys out.

Fine China is great and this is there best album to date (this is their first LP. I also own some of their early EP's). They have a sound that is very reminescent of some 80's euro-pop icons, most notably The Smiths and New Order, but to label them as throw-backs to that era is a bit dismissive. Fine China crafts music as opposed to screaming and banging and thrashing it into a messy existence which seems to be the trend of much of todays "popular" music. This album contains everything from charged danceble tunes to quiet and somtimes haunting meditative odes. I like to equate them more to Radiohead or Flaming Lips (Soft Bulletin). The three bands may not share a particular sound but they are all thoughtfull, competent and inventive musicians-music oriented bands. I highly recomend this album to anyone who considers themselves to have more sophisticated music tastes.

An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

I got this album by a friend, and I must say that I was very sceptic, but I soon changed my mind. This album is just faboulus. It reminds me of the tunes one can hear at the Disney parks. Wonderfull.

A heavenly voice.......2004-01-26

Davrath's Russian folk song album found its way into my collection some 25 years ago or more, and her amazingly beautiful voice captivated me and directed me toward a singing career the moment needle touched vinyl. The unique thing about Davrath is that, unlike many other classically-trained singers, her voice comes across as simple, honest and unnuanced when she is delivering folk music. She is the best of both worlds: tremendous vocal finesse coupled with fresh, unpretentious delivery. This is still #1 in my collection of both Russian and Yiddish folk songs.

2 beautiful CDs. The Russian songs are very nice and some of them are familiar. The Israeli songs are old style songs from the 50th. The Yiddish songs are just beautiful.
She had a very sweet voice. We can only be sorry that she died at
the age of 57 in 1987...

The unique voice of Natania Davrath.......2001-03-23

These two albums (released here together) were responsible for my choosing the career of singer of Russian and Yiddish folk songs. Davrath's voice is other-worldly, combining the best of classical training with the purity and simplicity of folk song. When I was only 18, I began reading the transliterated lyrics on the back of the LP and singing along, and (lo and behold), an hitherto unknown voice came out of me, inspired by her angelic tone.
