Editorial Reviews
Since releasing his debut album Satellites & Constellations, Only Child has DJd all over the world from Scandinavia to Australia and Moscow to L.A with the biggest and the best. His releases for Grand Central are sublimely soulful and encompass his love for DJ-ing. A typical DJ set from Only Child is a journey through futuristic funk - incorporating classic uptempo and electro breaks, deep house and hip hop. All these aspects are visibly evident in the plethora of styles that make up the Only Child sound.
His second album Solitaire features legendary soul diva Kathy Brown, The Voice Veba and GCs new signing Niko as well as Detroits Amp Fiddler (who sound is a cross between Sly Stone and DAngelo) and one half of DJ Spinnas Hip Hop group The Jigmastas, Kriminul. Like Only Childs DJ sets and GCs unmistakable sound, Solitaire is both Funky and sincere, brash and soulful, underground but accessible!

Dude...what were you thinking?.......2006-12-17
sappy love songs.......2006-09-14
it might have been a bit tedious and boring.
The problem is everywhere: If you are a Hardrock fan like bands Uriah Heep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, your ears can't be familar with all these silly love songs. My ears cannot work like that.
there are two alternatives:
- if you are a hardrock fan. You like a mythological lyrics, you won't like Peter Cetera or Chicago. Keep your fingers away from this !!!
- if you are a sappy love song fan then please buy this cd !!!
Glory of Cetera........2006-06-19
quality music.......2006-02-23
There are only two songs worth listening to over and over again.......2006-01-05
Peter Cetera joined the Chicago Transit Authority (later named Chicago) in 1967 as a bass player. He soon became one of the major songwriters and vocalist for the group, penning a majority of their hits throughout the seventies and eighties. Chicago hit a low point in the late seventies which prompted Cetera to consider a solo career. It was the video music-era that kept Chicago together (for a few more albums at least). Cetera was getting more and more exposure due to the music videos and was becoming a break out star. He released his first solo album in 1981, but stayed with Chicago in 1985. It was the following year that he released the highly successful Solitude/Solitaire.
"Big Mistake" pretty much sums up the pop-rock musical landscape at the time with its bouncing keyboard tones, melodic vocals, and powerful choruses. The guitars have that liquid sound that everyone was looking for to compliment their synths. "They Don't Make `Em Like They Used To" compares a special woman to a one-of-a-kind automobile. I can see Cetera's point here, but the sentiment seems a little corny. The addition of synthesized brass adds great texture to the track. It's more likely than not that you bought this album for "Glory of Love." Who can deny this touching and emotional ballad that was the theme for The Karate Kid: Part II? It fit the movie perfectly, and probably every wedding and prom that occurred that year.
"Daddy's Girl" has one of those keyboard and bass build-ups that lead into a driving chorus section. It was another ballad that helped catapult this album up the charts; "The Next Time I Fall." Amy Grant's (virtually unknown in the pop circle at the time) soft tones complimented Cetera's high-pitched melodic delivery perfectly. On "Solitude/Solitaire," Peter struggles with thoughts of running away from the world where he could never be found. The track is commanded by a strong synthesizer presence.
Cetera went on to release a handful of solo albums, but eventually fell off the face of the Earth. Cetera's vocal talent and musicianship certainly could not be to blame for his trip into obscurity. You can't deny the guy's good. I think it boiled down to two things; his sound had gotten old and dated, and people would rather see him back with Chicago. Cetera wouldn't even talk about the group or allow for his songs to be played during VH1's Behind the Music special on Chicago a few years ago, so I don't think there's a chance of a reunion there.
The Verdict
I've always enjoyed Peter's work in Chicago, but Solitude/Solitaire is a far cry from that (except for the ballads). It's a different sound, a different feel, and not as polished as his later work with Chicago. I'm sure that's what he was going for, but I don't think it was a good choice. Although the album's nine songs are decent, they're only two songs worth listening to over and over again; "Glory of Love" and "The Next Time I Fall."

In the opening seconds of this solo outing, former Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness peels off the line like a Chevy hotrod. Combining gritty punk attitude, honky-tonk toughness, and rockabilly swagger, Ness spins tales of depravity ("Crime Don't Pay," "Ballad of a Lonely Man") that would be downright depressing if they weren't so foot-tappingly catchy. A world-weary tough guy--equal parts Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Rotten--Ness is a true homegrown talent, combining his trademark growl and wire-taut guitar playing with dramatic, captivating storytelling. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Brian Setzer, and members of the Royal Crown Revue add to this record's already formidable mix, but Ness is really the star, proving at every turn that there can be life after punk without coming anywhere close to selling out. --Donovan FinnCustomer Reviews:

You Can't Lose with Desert Solitaire.......2002-06-03
Played at night (which I highly recommend), it is captivating, relaxing and purges the mind of petty concerns, as they are over-ridden by this tranquil reminder of nature's power, vastness and timelessness. There is incredible, powerful visual imagery in this album. For example, track 7, "Shiprock", the impression of a broad-based rock formation is scored as very low rumbling tones, demonstrating the formation's massive base and size; and a constant ominous high tone, representing the dizzying height the formation reaches. Also during this cut, the volume cresendos from start to midpoint and then descresendos to the end, giving us the impression of passing a powerful force from nature.
Just as in the desert, water is scarce on this album - the only hint of moisture is a tingling that we hear while watching the "Cloud of Promise" (track 5) approach and grow from the horizon. The rattlesnakes are on track 6.
It boggles the mind that a collection of impressions so elemental in essence could have been set to music by mere human beings, but yet here it is. This CD is a legal hallucinogen, so use it in moderation.

There's a reason why Neil cried that night..........2006-10-12
Neil Sedaka is a very emotional man. He's been married to the same woman, Leba, for more than 40 years. He's got two great children that he adores--daughter Dara (with whom he had that great 1980 hit duet, "Should've Never Let You Go," and Dara is still a professional singer today) and son Marc. And at last count, he has three grandchildren.
But when something touches him, he shows it.
For only 90 seconds of a song that lasts about 4:30, Clay Aiken was able to take "Solitaire" and make it his own, and it was as if Sedaka had passed the torch of that song to Clay. The tears that Neil shed that night were genuine. His offer to produce an album for Clay notwithstanding, there was a real connection between the two.
Deciding to record "Solitaire" was a wise decision. Not putting the song on his album, "The Measure of a Man," was not a wise decision. However, bringing the song back as an off-CD cut and adding it as the B-side of "The Way" was a good decision, because people began buying the single not because of "The Way," but because of "Solitaire."
When it finally dawned on The Powers That Be--the record producers, the radio station promoters, Clay himself, etc.--to finally put "Solitaire" as the A-side of the single and promote "Solitaire" all by itself, it shot straight to #1 on the sales charts.
Clay Aiken--and Neil Sedaka--had a #1 song. For Neil, this was nothing new...but it was a great thing to happen to him in the 21st century. For Clay, savoring a #1 song is something he will enjoy for the rest of his life.
They're a great team. I hope they explore other songs together in the future.

New rendition of a popular old song.......2005-12-30
From the heartfelt poignance of the words to the breathtaking "glory note" in this song, Clay Aiken totally controls the mood of this composition.
The accompanying track, "The Way", is taken from his multi-platinum first time album, "Measure of a Man". Hearing this song back to back with "Solitaire", is a complimentary CD that is worth having.
Want Two Amazing Ballads? .......2005-06-17
I do not mean to neglect The Way though, for this is a beautiful song as well that I love, although Solitaire is stronger indeed. Yet they both are amazing ballads and Clay's voice shines on both. If you love these two songs then go out and get his full c.d., because there are other songs worth recognition on his c.d. definitely. The problem is they didn't put Solitaire on his official album so I had to buy the single. Solitaire is worth the money though. You won't regret it! Clay is truly talented and I eagerly await more from him!
Incredibly Gifted Vocalist - Terrific 2 Song CD.......2005-06-13
I can't believe no new Clay Aiken recordings have come out since December. Truly looking forward to the next CD.
I also highly recommend:

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.
Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.
Best Sound Track Ever.......2005-03-20
Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12
The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.
There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.
Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.
Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16
George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....
Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.
But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

Solitude, Again..........2006-07-08
The Nilsson songbook had been frequently tapped, but not for an album track such as the glorious "Remember," which is perfectly suited for Williams. Similarly, George Harrison's "That is All" is a treat. Just a short time before Karen & Richard took a stab at "Solitaire" Andy/Richard laid claim to one of Sedaka's "real" classics. Dipping into pleasant pop-ditty material, "Make it Easy for Me," "Getting Over You" & "Walk Right Back" work wonderfully.
The marvelous "The Dreamer," written (and performed) by London session pianist Nicky Hopkins, is simply perfect! The real treat beyond all others is/was Williams' powerfully subtle reading of the Dory Previn/Gato Barbieri "Last Tango in Paris." I only wish Ms. Previn had recorded it herself, but no such luck (regrettably, she never did record any of her film songs).
Of course, there were the weaker, done-to-death songs, such as Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," McCartney's "My Love," but they were forgivable in the larger scheme of things. Nearly every song on the album is perfectly arranged & (seemingly) lovingly performed.
As for Alone Again (Naturally), I never heard it until released in this 2-fer on CD. It is a step back as nearly every song is/was known before, but situated as it is here, before Solitaire, is feels like a nearly perfect companion, or "lead-in." Plus, there are at least a couple of remarkable covers. Dave Loggins' "Pieces of April" is perfectly lovely. Bacharach/David's "If I Could Go Back" is only marred by (now) dated guitars as well as spoken narrative, but the lovely lyrics & melody hold up. Gerry Beckley's (America) "I Need You," like the aforementioned "Remember," is a glove-fit for Williams.
On the lesser end, "Day by Day," from "Godspell" is abysmal. Flack/Hathaway own "Where is the Love," as Flack owns "The First Time Ever." Did anyone need another version of "Alone Again (Naturally)" or "The Long & Winding Road"? I never cared for Neil Diamond, so "Song Sung Blue" is just a waste of 3 minutes. Would have loved for "Amazing Grace" to have been more simply powerful (ala Judy Collins' acapella rendition), but no such luck. Still, like the Solitaire album, this is an Andy Williams recording I am glad too own.
And what better two albums to join together. Both titles allude to being alone. If half points were an option I'd have given this 3+1/2, so I rounded up.
Andy & Perry.......2005-09-16
I personally would not select these recordings for their inclusion of popular, individual songs - more instead, for the whole album reflecting their best artistry. The 1970s and early 1980s was a period of some exceptional pop, rock, and transitional music trends (a baroque flourish atop a short pop renaissance) - many of my all time favorite LPs (and CDs) belong to this music period. This is Andy's best stuff - not his most popular, but simply his best!
Solitaire alone would be a 5-star!.......2003-01-05
As the recorded earlier Alone Again indicated, Andy had harbored such ambitions for quite a while now, but he always went about it by covering indiscriminantly from the Top 40's, from Dawn to David Cassidy. In fact, if the NOW series had been around, it would look exactly like an Andy Williams album. And the story would stop there: unfashionable MOR singer trying to catch up with the hit of the week.
Yet for every awkward moment that the song was far beneath the singer - and there had been alot around back then - there was always another absolutely divine moment waiting just a couple of songs later. In Alone Again, Pieces Of April and If I Could Go Back were such moments.
Solitaire has three equally gorgeous gems: the title track (Andy's hit BEFORE the Carpenters), Last Tango In Paris, and Harry Nilsson's Remember Christmas. But for once the rest of the album holds up well before these three highlights. Even the more familiar covers (of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney & Andy's old labelmates the Everlys) work in the context of the whole album.
Unlike Barbra Streisand, Andy Williams didn't go on to become full fledged charttopper again, mainly because he had been there before and got other plans in life. But Solitaire proves he well could have.
Andy at his very best!.......2002-05-17
Rare Gems from the Master.......2002-05-03
Why Andy chose to record covers of others' music and not pound these, or other similar songs out in his own right, has long been a mystery. His name, closely associated with any song on this album (with the exception of Solitare which was a UK hit and earned Andy a 1976 Gold ALbum in the US--three years after release), Would have launched him onto the charts again at full speed. That said, this album reminds all of us what a really good singer Andy Williams is. His audiences in Branson and during his summer 2002 UK tour are in for a real treat in deed. Thanks Andy.
