Highly Recommended! .......2006-12-09
Some highlights are:
-"Ashokan Farewell", which absolutely aches with longing
-The haunting melody of "Theme From Schindler's List"
-The moving "Battle of Kinsale"
-"Sabre Dance" and "Perpetuo Mobile" are great examples of Mr. Harrington's technical expertise
A note should also be made about the wonderful piano accompaniment by William Lewis- it's really a perfect pairing. Also, be sure to read the lovely program notes written by Mr. Harrington that accompany the CD. He gives some background on each track, and it really enhanced my appreciation of the music. And, to top it all off- the whole thing was recorded with crystalline sound quality so you can hear every gorgeous note ring out.

Album Description
VNV Nation's last album, Matter and Form (2005), was hailed by critics for its high-impact array of tone and sound, from hard hitting anthems to euphoric symphonies. In April 2007, the band is poised to release its next album, Judgement, which promises to be their most powerful and unique release to date. Having already broken the boundaries between industrial and other alternative music styles on Matter and Form, VNV Nation take this idea to new heights by creating a sound that is a collision of ever present insight, energy, emotion, past and future. From its fast pace, pounding bass-line and melody to its electric-guitar like synth sounds and Ronan Harris's thought provoking vocals, "Nemesis" rings through as one of VNV's most aggressive anthems to date. "Testament," which could be described as an electronic-indie anthem, "The Farthest Star" and "Carry You" provide a bright, hopeful outlook, while "Movement" presents a dark trance flavor to the band's ever expanding repertoire of song possibilities. The omniscient "Descent" sweeps in with dark electronic rhythms and lyrics that describe complete devastation, giving the yin to the yang of the ethereal ballad "Secluded Spaces" that makes you feel like nothing in the world could be more beautiful. With every album, VNV Nation manages to tear down more and more musical boundaries. Judgement will be their greatest achievement thus far.Customer Reviews:

Part showtunes, part classical, and part folk music, Ronan Hardiman's score to Lord of the Dance, the musical starring dancer Michael Flatley, successfully avoids all the inherent pitfalls of such an enterprise. Hardiman has emerged as Ireland's finest interpreter of traditional music for films, TV, and the theater, and under his guidance the 19 lush orchestral tunes, augmented with many traditional instruments, are rife with the spirit of the Emerald Isle. Two of the tracks feature the taps of Flatley and Co, while the rest highlight the score as composed by Hardiman with all its subtle textures intact and not masked by the live sound of tap dancing. Lord of the Dance is a perfect and very listenable fusion of Broadway and the indigenous heritage of Irish music making. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:

THIS should've been LOTR's soundtrack.......2006-06-15
"Cry of the Celts" is a perfect epic opening. It's primal, beautiful.Shouldn't it have been the background for the opening sequence when Galadriel speaks of the forging of the One Ring?
"Warriors" is wonderfully ominous. It would've been a memorable theme for orcs&uruk-hai.And of course,Sauron.
"Gypsy" is sexy.It could've fit the scenes between Aragorn&Arwen,or Frodo&Galadriel. It's Celtic spice.
"Fiery Nights" shows that yes, saxophones can be great in Celtic music.Would've been great, and sensual, for the Mirror of Galadriel scene as well as Frodo's vision of Galadriel in Mordor.
"Lament" is elegaic.
"Siamsa" is celebratory music.Would've fit ANY of the happy endings at the end of "Return of the King." Why not Sam&Rose's wedding?
"Stolen Kiss","Nightmare"&"Victory" would have fit the finale.
Ronan Hardiman KNOWS Celtic music deeply in his artistry. He had experience with soundtracks before doing this score. He's capable of conveying epic themes. This is a must-listen-to album!

Forty years after the Clancy Brothers found popularity singing traditional Irish folksongs to an American audience, along comes the Irish Tenors, the trio of John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan. Backed by plenty of coverage on public television, the three tenors perform a soothing and nostalgic mix of Emerald Isle tunes--from "Danny Boy" to "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," along with a few surprises. Recorded live at the Royal Dublin Society Main Hall with a light orchestra, the album gives each of the three vocalists his chance in the spotlight. Fans of John McDermott should be sure to seek out the artist's solo discs such as Remembrance, which are far more intimate (and musically diverse) fare. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Older album, new review.......2007-04-13
This is what my grandmother's John McCormack albums would sound like if they were recorded today. The fact that this music can connect generations, living and dead, speaks to its power. The fact that these singers, especially Anthony Kearns, can pull it off without even breaking a sweat, speaks to their talent.
When I was a young girl, I tried in vain to get good recordings of good Irish tenor music from our local library. Usually, I found albums with the words "Emerald Isle" somewhere in the title performed by folks who sounded like they'd had a few before the recording started. It is a joy to finally hear these songs sung, and recorded, as they were meant to be. If you don't own this, buy it now!

For his second solo release, the former Three Irish Tenors member has decided to concentrate on songs of faith for which, given his oft-repeated history of triumphing over various obstacles, he would seem to be ideally suited. As on his debut effort, the orchestral arrangements are florid and the context strictly middle-of-the-road. For many listeners, his 9/11-vintage, a cappella rendering of "Amazing Grace" was a high point of his career, and one or two more sparsely arranged or even unaccompanied tracks might have been perfect for this album. There is no material of deeply Celtic context, other than "Morning Has Broken," a song associated with British folk singer Cat Stevens which was in fact lifted note-for-note from a Scottish Christmas carol called "Leanabh An Aigh." Tynan performs it as a duet with country star Vince Gill, who actually sounds more in synch with the soaring folkloric purity of the melody. Basically, Tynan is a fine example of what a pop tenor should sound like; as with Andrea Bocelli and others of that ilk, he aims to please and this he does surpassingly well. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
"When Ronan sings the clouds cry but the sun turns up sooner than it would have."BonoRonan Tynan's newest release, The Dawning of the Day, is a collection of faith based songs that are an extension of Ronan's artistic being and his ever-evolving career as a singer. Brown Bannister, the award-winning producer know for his work in the Christian community with Amy Grant, is the man behind the controls for this latest Tynan effort.
Ronan has achieved worldwide fame as a member of the Irish Tenors. Now his singular voice and irresistible appeal have led him to strike out on his own, a decision that has resulted in something far more meaningful than a mere solo career.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

The five, young, good-looking and classically trained singers who comprise Amici Forever have a lot to offer. They have taste, and they make, for the most part, beautiful sounds (one of the sopranos is wobbly; the other singers--a soprano, two tenors and bass-baritone--are splendid). Their debut CD, The Opera Band, has sold over a million copies. Their arrangements, though somewhat sappy, are attractive, and they're very imaginative with both classical and pop repertoire. I Amici are not just good singers who add a beat to the classics; they think things through. Defined offers a fine arrangement of the Allegretto of Beethoven's 7th Symphony with a text that turns it into a Hymn to Liberty; a Bocelli-Celine Dion duet has been transformed into a densely harmonic quintet; an original work tells a Maori legend; Dalila's "Mon ceur s'ouvre a ta voix," once past the wobbly soprano, becomes a fine blend; Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto and Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez" form the basis for two other pieces. This is a handsomely produced album which could alert pop fans to some beautiful classical melodies and, in and of itself, it's good listening. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

A fine CD ruined by over-aggressive copy protection.......2006-08-12
My first bit of advice on the recording, then, is either to return it for exchange or put a note on it to warn against insertion into a computer. Alternatively, if you have the equipment, software, and ability, you may capture its music by playing it in a regular CD player with a cable connection to your sound card's input. A stereo analog audio cable connection will do, but if you have it, a digital SPDIF connection will do even better. My infected CD, by the way, is labeled as RCA Victor 8 2876 68883-2. (Further information/discussion of the CD's problems can be found on the Internet.)
The replacement version of this CD, the 2006 Australian Tour Edition, with two "bonus" tracks and presumably free of the rootkit, is also listed on Amazon.
I am a newcomer to Amici Forever (though they've been around awhile) and no fan of "fusion" music in general, but I bought the disk because some of my friends are fans and I wanted to see for myself what they were like. In general, I must say that I rather like this disk, though it is obviously something quite distinct from the classical music from which much of it is derived. It is a transformation of familiar classic tunes into a populist genre characterized by strong emotional intensity, highly synthesized and sonically processed sound, and often prominent percussion effects. (The waveforms show clear evidence of volume-limiting, with sustained passages right up to the allowed maximum. This creates the effect of great loudness and intensity, even passion.)
The singers possess very fine voices for this idiom, which seems partly an outgrowth of the "Three Tenors" phenomenon. A good bit of the singing is in Italian, but English is well represented, along with bits of Spanish, French, and even background Maori.
I think these pieces should be treated as creations in their own right (even though many are derivative) and judged on their own merits as to musical appeal, imagination, and artistry.
"La Fiamma Sacra" (the sacred flame) is sung in English, despite its Italian title, and tells the story of a low-born man endowed with the gift of a singing voice which destines him to greatness. It is sweet, sentimental (not wishy-washy!), and altogether loveable.
"Nella Fantasia" (in a fantasy or dream) is widely known as a tenor vehicle derived from Morricone's film soundtrack for "The Mission." (I believe Bocelli and Watson, among others, have recorded it.) It is sung in Italian, and is very fine and satisfying in this version.
"The Prayer" (la preghiera), a composed song in Italian and English, is also widely known, especially in the version by Bocelli and Dion. Here it is no less delightful with five voices instead of two.
"Aranjuez Ma Pensee" (Aranjuez my thought) though titled in French is sung in the Spanish appropriate to its subject, the historic town just south of Madrid. The tune is a well-known and gorgeous theme from Joaquin Rodrigo's guitar concerto "Concierto de Aranjuez" set with words to make it a kind of love song for a place. The words are lovely and poetic and the piece is hauntingly and exotically beautiful. (Rodrigo is buried in Aranjuez, and I doubt if this borrowing makes him turn over in his grave.)
"So Far Away" is another love song for a place, this time New Zealand, "the land of the long white cloud." It is a very nice composed song sung in English with ethnic touches (a celtic pipe and background chorus singing in Maori). It has an irresistible loveliness.
"Nostalgia" (la mia nostalgia) is a derivation from Rachmaninov's immensely popular and often quoted second piano concerto. It is a song of loneliness and longing for a past love whose music tells the story without the need to understand the Italian words.
"Core 'Ngrato" (ungrateful heart) is an old Neapolitan chestnut sung in Italian dialect by tenors from as far back as Caruso and on up to today's cohort. It complains of the lover's mistreatment by the unappreciative Catari. It's a fine, impassioned song, and this group does not stint in its presentation.
"Land & Freedom" (terra e liberta) is perhaps the most surprising inclusion here, for it is a transformation of the supremely beautiful second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 into another song of nostalgia for a beloved place, now distant or even vanished, associated with freedom, music, and poetry. In this Italian language song, the composer uses Beethoven's own exquisite countermelody, along with his strikingly lovely harmonies. With music from such a master, how could this song be anything but transcendant?
"Mon Coeur S'Ouvre A Ta Voix" (at your voice my heart opens) is the most popular aria from Camille Saint-Saens' opera "Samson and Delilah," sung by Delilah to express her love for Samson (with some response by him). This arrangement, which becomes a duet, preserves much of the original, and is properly ecstatic as sung in the original French.
"Recondita Armonia" (hidden harmony) is another well-known aria, this time the tenor Cavaradossi's song about his fascination with the contrasting beauties of two female figures (from Puccini's opera "Tosca"). Here he gets support from other Amici members, but the music itself is left mostly intact, except for the instrumental accompaniment and vocal expansion. It's quite convincing.
"Adagio" is another borrowing from a purely instrumental classic, Albinoni's adaptation of pre-existing tunes to create his immensely popular "Adagio for Strings." The voices here follow the interweaving melodic lines of those strings, singing the newly-supplied Italian words of a lover's yearning for his absent love, and ending with "I feel beating within me this music which I invented for you." The result of this fusion of the very old with new words and vocal/instrumental sounds is likely to be much more accessible to most of today's hip-hop generation than the original, for all its classic elegance and beauty.
"Ocean Heart" (oceano cuore) is another instrumental music adaptation, being a setting of new Italian words to an arrangement of music from Aram Khatchaturian's ballet "Spartacus." The original music here is much less familiar than that of the other two, perhaps emboldening the arranger to take a bit more liberty (a new countermelody is added to the composer's own tune). This attractive, more midstream arrangement may waken many new ears to Khatchaturian's lovely, pensively yearning melody.
In summary, I applaud Amici Forever for their success in translating some of classical music's finest products into a form likely to appeal to a much wider audience than heretofore. This is not for everyone though: classical music purists will likely reject it as overblown, overheated, and just too remote from the original versions. Those with parochial musical tastes may dislike its cosmopolitan nature with untranslated foreign words. Still, youngish people who embrace the world's diversity and who were brought up in the tradition of rock concerts will probably find much enjoyment in the sheer vibrancy and musical pleasure here.
So, within its genre, I give the music of this disk 5 stars, but its physical embodiment in an infected CD merits no stars at all, rather, a big raspberry!
Fantastic.......2006-02-26
Well Arranged but Overproduced.......2006-02-20
Unfortunately, this album has so much echo and reverb that it is almost impossible to hear the artists' actual voices. If you just like opera music, this is a wonderful album, but if you are a student of the operatic voice, look elsewhere.

I liked all of the songs except for Colours of Rain and Endless Skies. They were too slow for my tastes, but it's very possible that many people will like these songs.
It's hard to compare this album to earlier ones, since the style changes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). But I do think the new style caters better to generic techno lovers. That said, VNV Nation is electronica, and there's a significant difference between it and your basic techno/dance music.
I give product 4 stars. It's not the best techno music ever (kind of dull compared to some groups, definitely not the "dance" genre), but it's a pretty solid album. If you like VNV Nation mainly because of their earlier sound, this album may not suit you. But in general, all techno lovers should find this to be a pretty decent CD.

Once again great music! And I finally hear Strings of Fire!.......2005-08-01
About each song:
HIGH PRIESTS: This begins this CD with "monks" chanting in a language I don't know. Very strange, yet I like it. I think the fact that it's strange and a little mysterious is the reason why I like it.
DANCE OF LOVE: One of my favorites on here. It's Micheal Flatley on flute! Yes, the breaths the flutist takes are pretty obvious and it's not hard to miss it, but you get used to it. I love the violin part too. Very pleasant and light.
CARRIKFERGUS: (Nice title for a song!) This song isn't what I expected, and it doesn't seem to fit in. The music, the voice--don't get me wrong, it's nice, but it's too rockish for me.
DUELLING VIOLINS: Reminds me of Strings of Fire a little bit. One of the best on the CD, very beautiful violin music and almost perfect.
WHISPERING WIND: Another beautiful song with Micheal Flatley on flute. This song is so sweet and sad and light all at once. It's the kind of song that fills you up with emotion.
DANCE ABOVE THE RAINBOW: This song reminds me of the song Siamsa from the Lord of the Dance CD. I like it, but then don't like it. The first half of the song consist of lovely violin music. But the second half of the song is this techno-sounding stuff and I don't care for that.
DAWNING: Yes! This is exactly how the Lord of the Dance show begins. I've always wanted the music from the beginning of the show to be included with Cry of the Celts and here it is. I love it much better with it.
SPIRIT'S LAMENT: Another song they forgot to place on the Lord of the Dance CD, which was in the show. It's good, but not as memorable as the other songs on here.
I DREAMT I DWELT: A nice vocal from the show Feet of Flames. The music is nice, the voice is at it's best, and the lyrics are sweet. This is probably my favorite song after "She Moved Through the Fair" from Lord of the Dance. It seems that voice gets better through each song.
STRINGS OF FIRE: Yes! I finally get this song on CD! WHY, did they not include this song on the Lord of the Dance CD? This song, which is mainly violin music is very beautiful, with a lot of energy to it. I'd say it's perfect in every way.
HELL'S KITCHEN: The chanting "monks" are back! This is just High Priests with more music. Somewhat creepy and just as strange, but I like this one better and the music is good. I just wish I could understand what they're saying. But at least I now know how to say "1,2,3,4" in Gaelic!
CELTIC FIRE (LIVE): It's another personal favorite with Micheal Flatley on flute once again! Another perfect, pretty cute song with a lot of energy to it! And I like the fact that it's live. I don't think I would ever be able to enjoy this song without having the screaming fans, and a shouting Flatley in the background. Perfect way to end this CD and it's altogether wonderful.
If you're a fan of Celtic music, Micheal Flatley and just all-around great music, then I'm positive you won't regret buying this CD nor coming across any big disappointments. All I can tell you is enjoy.
