    4 out of 5 stars Wax Poetic.......2007-01-30

Wax Poetic is a interesting group. This cd shows an eclectic side of the group. Differant singers gives it depth. I really enjoyed listening to the cd. Lights low...just chilling!

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic downtempo - a little something for everyone.......2005-12-18

I just fairly recently bought this CD and have been pretty impressed. I bought it primarily due to Norah Jones' contributions. I love Norah, her voice is heaven, but have found her highly acclaimed (and deservedly so) solo work to be just ever so slighly too soulful-jazzy-bluesy for my taste - I love her solo work, to be sure, just not as much as I love her in this genre. While her recent work is beautiful indeed, I really like her voice when it is married with downtempo electronica such as with Wax Poetic or on the song "New York City" on the 2005 dance/electronica compilation CD "Top Shelf Dance - Volume 1" (check it out, it's fantastic).

Really, though, the primary reason to buy this album is for the song "Angels" - Norah's voice floating above the beautiful ethereal music is intense bliss. It takes a minute for her vocals to kick in, and the song is certainly not lyrically dense, but the overall effect is absolute heaven.

There are other winners here - "Tell Me" (Norah's other vocal performance on this album), "Girl", "Homme" (love the Brazilian Girls!), and "Sea Grass". There are some other good tracks as well, in addition to these, just not as good and somewhat hit or miss for me. Still, all in all, very solid album. I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, sexy, sophisticated........2005-06-22

Creative and imaginative, with a real art to the compositions, mixing and musicianship. So few recordings deserve the sort of respect that comes with straight five-star ratings, in this case practically across the boards. Delicious, sexy, sophisticated.

    5 out of 5 stars Upbeat downtempo.......2004-07-23

Anyone who's a fan of jazz-based music and electronica is sure to love this album. I happened upon them by chance when they opened for another band. Intrigued, I later bought their self-titled debut when I saw it in a store. Nublu Sessions has some tracks off that release, as well as all-new tracks. Nublu touches on a variety of styles, genres, vocals and tempos. It would be hard to be disappointed with this album. I also recommend getting their first album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Downtempo cds of 2004.......2004-06-12

I've been listening to this cd over and over since I got it. I'm not a big Norah Jones fan, but her voice blends perfectly with this music. The music blends jazz, electronic, a tiny bit of hip-hop, and world beats. It's laid-back and perfect for summer. Most of the tracks have a female vocalist over the music.

Track 4, Angels, is definitely the highlight of this album. There really isn't a bad track on the album.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2005-01-16

These 1941-1942 recordings are the only ones ever made of Eddie "Son" House playing with a band, and this 19-track disc collects all 15 songs originally issued on Biograph's "Delta Blues" album and adds four more tracks, none of which are sung by House ("Fo' Clock Blues", "Camp Hollers", an incomplete "Special Rider Blues", and the instrumental "Key Of Minor").

Folklorist Alan Lomax came to Mississippi in late August 1941, bringing with him a 300-pound "portable" disc-cutting machine, and cut five acetate masters - the first four tracks on this album plus "Delta Blues".
Now, these cuts may not quite match the power of House's ferocious 1930 Paramount recordings, but barely anything does, and these are tremendous recordings in their own right.
Perhaps the chatter of the other three musicians on the first three tracks, and the sound of Joe Martin picking his mandolin, dulls the raw intensity of Son House's music a little, but you can still hear why Muddy Waters was so much in awe of Son House, stating that "back where I came from, down in the Delta, Son House was the king!"

The 1941 recordings were cut in the back room of Clack's country store in Robinsonville by Lake Cormorant in Mississippi, with guitarist Willie Brown (another former playing partner of Charley Patton), "Fiddlin'" Joe Martin - who actually played mandolin - and harpist Leroy Williams. At one point, you can actually hear a train passing by outside.

The remaining numbers (which include a longer version of "The Jinx Blues") were cut the following summer, and on these tracks, House performs alone. This is where the power and intensity of House truly shines through, showcasing what an effective guitar player he really was. Son House may not have been Charlie Christian, but his loud, grinding, strongly rhytmic playing, filled with wailing slide riffs, was the perfect background for his huge voice and emotionally charged singing.

Among the highlights of this collection are "Delta Blues", superbly performed with only Leroy Williams backing House up, "Low Down Dirty Dog Blues" and "Depot Blues", which features some of the most impressive guitar playing House ever comitted to tape, "Walking Blues" (especially the 1941 version), and "The Jinx Blues", set to an effective shuffle beat. Just listen to the way House snaps his bass string against the fretboard!
This collection is one of the all-time great documents on early Delta blues. The sound is as good as can be expected, and this is a worthy testament to one of the most important figures in modern popular music.

5 out of 5 stars Son House is the real deal. Listen and learn.......2004-03-03

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.
    Listen and learn

5 out of 5 stars Son House, King of the Delta.......2002-09-13

Son House is the most important and influential Delta Bluesman to ever live he was a major influence to Muddy Waters & Robert Johnson and every one else including me. Buy this C.D. it is very essential stuff this is hardcore Delta Blues there are some trks with Son House in a band setting with Willie Brown and others (perfect example of what a DeltaBlues jam session probally sounded like). These are field recordings and I mean they were actually recorded outside on trk.4 "Shetland Pony Blues" you actually hear a steam locomotive (train) go buy in the background. If your a aspiring blues guitar player get this if your a fan of the Blues your C.D. collection is seriously lacking if this is not part of it. also get "Masters of the Delta Blues, The Friends of Charlie Patton" all of Son Houses earliest recorings are on there (1930) with some other Delta Blues Legends

5 out of 5 stars The Real Blues--Raw and Dirty.......2002-05-03

This collection is essential to any blues collection...you cannot truly appreciate the blues until you've heard these recordings.

Son House is my favorite blues performer. No one--not even his proteges Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters--could match him when it came to the raw emotion. Sure, Robert inspired later blues-rock giants like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Stevie Ray Vaughn (to name a few...) and Muddy revolutionized the blues by 'inventing' electricity. But this collection, when coupled with the album "The Complete Recorded Works of Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers" (ASIN: B000000J26--recorded in 1930; another essential disc), offers the listener a true glimpse into history.

The first few tracks include House singing and playing guitar with his band: Willie Brown (who has since attained legendary status as his name is mentioned in Robert Johnson's lyrics; he was also was the central character in the 1986 movie "Crossroads") on harmonica, and Fiddlin' Joe Martin on mandolin. These songs are amazing. The only word I can use to describe House's slide guitar technique is FEROCIOUS. His mixture of slams and slaps, when combined with the shouts, moans, and grunts of his vocals, is nothing short of frightening. "Walking Blues"--which, of course, was a hit for both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters but was written by House--is one particular standout. It is nearly seven minutes long (House is famous for his "epic" performances...in concert, his songs were known to exceed twenty minutes), a relentless barrage of blues. "Levee Camp Moan" is another strong point. The rhythms and shouts are incomparable.

Perhaps the best analogy is "a frontal assault on the soul".

The remaining songs are House's solo efforts, although the striking force has not deminished at all. In fact, they may be even more powerful--it's hard to believe that only ONE guy is singing...!

When House was rediscovered during the '60s blues revival, he recorded his first and only studio album in 1965 ("Father of the Delta Blues"--ASIN: B000002877) for the Columbia label. Most who have heard of Son House know him based on these recordings alone. There is no arguement that this is a magnificent album--the emotional quality has only increased with is age. But while the sound quality is definitely better than these early field recordings (mono recordings into a single microphone in the stockyard of a train depot--you can even hear railway sounds in the background!!), House's old age hindered the ferocity of his slide guitar playing, forcing his tempo to slow down. If you want to hear the true capabilities of the man who I think is the greatest bluesman who ever lived, you must listen to these Library of Congress recordings (and then check out "...and the Great Delta Blues Singers").

5 out of 5 stars Son House -- Library of Congress sessions.......2000-04-12

Son House has, arguably, the best blues voice, ever. (His rivals are his pupil, Robert Johnson, and BB King). This is his best album, ever. Great voice, great words, great guitar, and (on one cut) a train in the background. Recorded sound quality is adequate -- better than most for the period. This is one of the five or ten indispensible blues recordings of the twentieth century--Changed how I thought about music.

    - Blues ain't nothin'but a lowsown shakin' chill, - If you ain't had them, I hope you never will.

3 out of 5 stars All about Disc 1.......2006-12-20

Maybe I've gotten spoiled by Miguel Migs and some of Naked Music's offerings. Discs 2 and 3 of this set are some of the most monotonous sounding, unoriginal mixes and vibes I've heard in a while.

Disc 1 is a totally different story, however. HOT grooves, thumpin' bass, and powerhouse vocals scattered throughout make OM SUMMER SESSIONS worth buying. A couple of gospel house tunes were a very nice surprise on an early morning ride to work when I felt like going back to bed -- especially when the gospel diva herself, Ann Nesby, makes a thrilling appearance. She doesn't even sing on her own albums like she does here.

I guess performances like that and the overall goodness of the first disc were what set my expectation for the rest of the set, which is shockingly dull by comparison. 2/3 of this collection of tunes is mediocre so I can't give the complete set more than 3 stars.

That said -- disc 1 is one of the best dance discs extant, almost up there with Naked Music's stuff. You'll have to decide if it's worth the baggage that it carries with it, lol.

      4 out of 5 stars Funky grooves.......2006-08-24

It doesn't take very long to establish a groove on this 3 cd set: possibly 3 minutes at most. The funky quality of the album reminds me of the likes of Soulive. There are male vocals on pretty much every track on the first disc. This is my first house of Om compilation so there are crowd cheers on some of the tracks as it is supposed to be live. My favorite grooves on the first disc have to be Ron Hall's "The way you love me" and Frankie Knuckles "Disco Shimmy." Micky More's "Victory Dance" carries the second album well. It is surrounded by some alright tracks. Audiowhores "Not going back" establishes a nice groove with horns sounding and the album ends well with Fourfeet. DJFluid's whole set is good, and adds the techno edge to the cds. There are some cool bass lines on all 3 cd's and some decent female vocals. Overall, a good compilation of funky grooves.

According to legend, it was Son House's blistering bottleneck guitar that prompted Robert Johnson to pick up a six string. House's potent early recordings from 1930 and 1941 to 1942 showcased his raw, emotionally powerful style, but never received the acclaim of Johnson's. When he was rediscovered during the '60s blues revivalist movement, House's voice still possessed wall-shaking intensity and his idiosyncratic slide guitar still had bite. These 21 recordings (including five alternate takes) offer superior fidelity and significant room for House to stretch out. The first disc features his classic "Preachin' Blues," a stirring a capella "Grinning in Your Face," and a nine-minute "Levee Camp Moan," with Canned Heat's Al Wilson on harp. Disc two (outtakes and alternates) includes an odd homage to President Kennedy and a riveting version of the spiritual "Motherless Children." --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Father of the Delta Blues.......2005-08-20

I`ve written reviews for releases by Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, the importance of those recordings are well understood and that leads us to Edward"Son"House.Although others made their mark no one had more influence over the blues scene in the 30`s than this man.A combination of preacher and bluesman,Son was always in conflict because of his secular upbringing and the freedom and experiences that being a traveling blues singer could and did offer.
Although he only recorded a few sides in the early 30`s and then again in the early 40`s,that was it.Soon after he moved up north taking a job as a porter on the railways of the northeast.Fast forward to the early 60`s when he was tracked down and asked to perform, which he did, basically re-learning the guitar and then landing gigs at coffee houses and colleges then later festivals around the U.S. and Europe. In 1965 when he recorded these tracks he was at the height of his powers....with a hard often violent playing style and powerful voice he brought the delta blues style he helped create into the present with powerful performances of such classics as Death Letter,Grinnin in Your Face,Preachin Blues,Pony Blues and the list goes on.
With sound quality as an excuse for not wanting to listen to recordings of 78`s from 60 or 70 years ago, these discs are of the highest fidelity so the choice is yours.
Essential and worth every penny, you should make this part of your collection....the blues has never sounded better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island CD of the first rank!.......2005-02-09

The Blues- either you get it or you don't. If you're one of the ones who does and you don't have this, then you need to stop whatever you're doing and get this. NOW. It's just that damn good. It's just that damn great! This is one of the CDs that gets me through the high times, the low times and all time in-between.

For me it ultimately comes down to two guys: Skip James and Son House. The two embody the differing poles of early blues aesthetic: James' eerie falsetto keen, odd/moribund lyrics (I'd rather be the Devil) minor key-tuned guitar and intricate finger work, under-stated and introspective; then you got House's deep and (utterly masculine) hollerin' vocals, his combative slide work on his National Steel resonator, his frenetic performances- visceral.

Both men had a deeply spiritual bent.

Now then, there are purists and then there are PURISTS. Some reviewers may say that the later Son House (these studio recordings) is lacking the ferocity and skill and power/delivery of his earlier self (the Lomax Library of Congress recordings and the Paramount recordings from the 30's). They may be right but I don't think so. I'm not knocking his earlier recordings- I swear by everything the man did. It's a tradeoff, basically- sound quality vs. intensity is one way of putting it, though, again I disagree: I think the man was just as gigantic on these two CDs as he was back in the day... And you can tell that his soul, his voice, his anima, had been tempered by the passing years. His intensity seems focused and buttressed to me, not worn out. He sounds like the most alive man I have ever heard.

These two CDs beyond are great, though I like the first better. The classic, "Preachin Blues," puts fire in your guts. "Death Letter," (maybe the best blues tune ever crafted) is jilting and hair-raising. Both takes. The same for "Levee camp Moan." The a capella versions of "John the Revelator" are marvelous. "Louise McGhee" is sublime.

Now- On some of the later alternate takes, House loses a bit of luster... The man coughs a little towards the end, but so what. Alan Wilson's harp never gets in the way, and works well. The Charley Patton cover is a fine time.

I've blathered about enough. I hope I've persuaded you a little- read on. My two cents: All of this is essential. ALL. You just don't hear stuff this good. It will have you humming along, singing at work, tapping your foot. It will make you want to learn to play the blues (and there's hope for you! Incidentally, House didn't learn guitar 'til he was 24- picked it up in a matter of weeks, so they say).

      Pick this up.

3 out of 5 stars Better Son House Exists.......2002-12-06

These 1965 recordings by Blues elder Son House are decent. This powerful and compelling singer is aged, but still at the top of his form. The song selection is great, and the sound quality is also good, but better recordings exist. Fans should specifically look at the 1941 Library of Congress recordings capture a younger Son House, and Masters of the Delta Blues, for even earlier Son House songs.

5 out of 5 stars Superb change of scenery for the OM series........2007-01-21

I believe this is actually OM's second foray into the tech side of house, a big change from the funky and soulful house they are usually known for. The first was a mix called Electrolush, and it seemed forced how they tried to blend techno, tech house, electro and funky house into the same mix, and it didn't work at all. The discs were 3 tracks of one genre, 3 tracks of the next, and so on and so forth, to where it seemed like they just lined up the different tracks by genre, with no regard to the flow of the overall mix. Also, I didn't appreciate funky house in the same mix as techno; it just doesn't work.

This, their second real foray out of their usual house groove, has both discs starting off with some standard house, and after 3 of 4 tracks of each mix, we quickly get some heavy doses of tech house the rest of the way. It's good track selections, good mixing, and great flowing sounds from both Justin Martin on disc 1 and Johnny Fiaso on disc 2. Fiasco does return to some house tracks near the end of his mix, so disc 1 has more of the tech tracks. They both sound great and after being burned by some previous OM releases in the past, I've finally found what I consider the best they've ever released, and a highly recommended 2 disc set.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of deep house with a modern electro tech edge!.......2006-12-28

This mix compilation is SO good! 50% of it is the deep house-y goodness I would expect from OM Records and the other 50% is a fresh, new, modern sound of deep tech-y robot funk! It's deep yet edgy, smooth yet funky, chilled yet rockin' ... it's hard to explain as I haven't really heard a compilation like this before. I own a lot of house, deep house, techno, tech-house and progressive house music and this is one of the freshest house mixes that I have heard in a few years.

Awesome track selection, great beats, beautiful textures chilled in the funky winter air. If you are a true house music lover and want to hear a possible new direction for the genre, pick up this 2 disc mix!

San Francisco Sessions is arguably Mark Farina's seminal contribution to the house music community. The disc opens with soothing beach sounds and heavily effected vocals that set the tone for a warm blend of tracks that are both inspired and inspirational. The mix begins to hit stride around track four ( "Things We Used To Do") with its chopped up vocals, stabbing horns, and a breakdown that would destroy any dance floor. As the mix continues Farina layers his signature Mood II Swing a capellas over a number of tracks providing an excellent sense of tension and release. The remainder of the mix moves deftly between instrumental tracks ("Spellbound"), deep and minimal tracks ("Somethin' Else"), and outright funky tracks ("Seriousfunkill"). Mark has certainly thrown down the gauntlet for future contributors to the San Francisco Sessions series, as this disc has both captured, and helped shape, the sound of West Coast house. --Anish Acharya

I have to admit that I love Mark Farina. His style and way of blending all the tracks on this compilation are just awesome. I've seen him at the WMC(winter music conference), L.A, San Fran, and Chicago and he has never upset me in the least bit. He is one of my favorites of all time (including Jeno, Dj Dan, Dj Heather, Onionz, Miguel Migs, all the Moontribe heads). I knew that by getting this I wouldn't regret it and you shouldn't either. It's what house is supposed to sound like. Definitely do not miss.....or you'll hate yourself.

5 out of 5 stars In This House.......2004-05-27

Mark Farina created a masterpiece with this mix. While all house-heads are likely to love it, others who have not been exposed to house would love it to0. There is simply nothing to dislike here.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps Spinning- Update- Trying to pick one?.......2004-05-22

I've owned this CD for almost 2 years and it doesn't get much rest. I playit in my car & while I work. Enjoy.

Update: April 6, 2007- I currently own 6 different Mark Farina CDs. Out of my entire collection of 200+CDs all 6 are in the top 15. However, if you are "new" to Mark Farina and looking to just buy one CD (for right now) pick this one. It embodies the essence of Mark Farina and is a classic on the same level as Zero 7 Simple Things, Thievery Corporation Versions and St.Germain Tourist.

      5 out of 5 stars Must-have for today's breaks DJs.......2007-07-08

A great album that covers just about every subgenre of breaks (aside from progressive) while keeping that distinct Stanton Warriors sound. The thing I love most about this album is that, unlike most other compilations, it actually contains full-length, unmixed tracks, and no filler. The Stantons have a style that I appreciate as a DJ: it's all very danceable and energetic, but it straddles the line between mainstream hip-hop/rnb and more underground EDM. This CD is an excellent tool for introducing audiences to EDM (electronic dance music) if (like most American audiences) all they've heard at parties is radio rap. Oh yeah, and this CD is also loaded with killer tracks.

Definitely a must-buy for the breaks DJs out there. I almost bought the individual tracks on my usual digital downloads site, and then I checked Amazon on a hunch. The Amazon price is a lot better than the one at my usual online music retailer, and Amazon actually sends me a CD instead of just giving me .WAV or .MP3 files!

      3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-01-13

Expected more from this CD. Still enjoy it although wish it had more unity over the entire album. A few good tracks.
