Luther has always been an underrated songwriter, and this album should have changed that. From the soaring anguish of the title song, to the understated sentiment of the lovely "So Amazing," Give Me The Reason contains some of Luther's best written songs. He also continues to strike the perfect balance between production, song, and performance, as evidenced on the sputtering "I Really Didn't Mean It." Everything also comes together flawlessly on the delightfully frantic "Stop To Love," which recalls the sound of early Motown, yet has a modern spin all it's own.
Luther also performs a duet with dancer/actor Gregory Hines that is possibly the album's brightest highlight. There is a surprising chemistry between the voices of Vandross and Hines that is at the core of the touching, melodic "There's Nothing Better Than Love," which really transforms the song into a heart-felt stunner. Luther also adds another Bacharach/David composition to his catalog with his jazzy rendition of "Anyone Who Had A Heart," which stands tall with even the best of the Vandross covers. One of his most enjoyable albums, GIVE ME THE REASON represents Luther at his prime.
A fun album.......2004-04-30

Girlfriend counsel outweighs Saw's usual carnal chat on this set--her best of three recent collections. Marion Hall, Saw's real life good-girl, shines through in the gospel, "Glory Be to God." The title track, a sweetly voluptuous country & western lament over a slow-throbbing reggae bass, bares Saw's tender heart. None less than Linda Rondstadt is covering the tune for her next album! "What Is Slackness" is the most blistering attack on institutionalized hypocrisy in recent reggae memory: "Society a blame Lady Saw for the system them create/But when culture did a flop/They never let me t'rough the gate now/As me say `sex'/Them wan' fe jump on me case/...Slackness is when the road wan' fe fix/Slackness is when the government break them promise/Slackness is when the government issue guns." --Elena OumanoCustomer Reviews:
Vintage Saw. . . .......2006-09-22
Saw definitely had a bubbling to her at that which maybe only a few, if any really, have ever had, each tune was easy listening although she would always say something, be it sexual or relationship-wise, that would make you think, but all of the tunes were danceable and not just because 'bubbly' could firmly describe that period in dancehall riddims, many other artists were riding the same productions but not getting the effect and probably besides Beenie Man, no other artist could literally pack a dancefloor in JA better than Saw.
Released way back in 1996, a decade ago (am I really getting that old!) Give Me the Reason was just Saw's second full length studio album (and what a shame she's only released 3 since) and it was a very very solid album, probably not as spectacular as her debut Lover Girl, but still a fine fine effort.
The best song here without a doubt is What is Slackness? A prime example of Saw's talent in the era and a denouncement of the sickly amount of she was receiving at that point in her career for recording slack tunes similar to what her male peers were recording and receiving virtually no criticism at all.
Also check Good Wuk which is probably the biggest hit on the album. Good Wuk was more of a typicla dancehall tune over a Shocking Vibes riddim and at a much faster pace. Check the clever Darnest Thing and Husband a Mine both 2 really 2 fine tunes for Saw. Also check both Condom and the cool message on Love & Understanding which ranges in that fine fine old school dancehall vibe.
Then you have 2 really big tunes for different reason. First is the now infamous Life Without Dick, which is sung as if 'Dick' is her actual man and not. . . something else (as she says, 'lef up to your imagination). The song is shocking and after laughing for a good while you will thoroughly enjoy the story style of the tune. Then there's the second best tune her Name Nuh Stand fi Sex. The song is not too dissimilar to What is Slackness in that it displays an excellent message and at the same time gets the heads rocking back and forth and the hips gridning, just wonderfully done and while there are without a doubt more powerful lyricists out there, NO ONE in the dance could do Lady Saw's songs besides Lady Saw herself.
Overall, I equate this album similar to Vybz Kartel's sophomore (actually it is Kartel holding the candle to the far more veteran artist Saw) album JMT. Both their firsts were much more typical to the artist and in the second they showed they can actually vibe off of something that wasn't, in Saw's case, sex, typical to them as an artist. In the decade since, Saw has proven herself to be quietly quite versatile in the dance and if he is ever so lucky Kartel can do half the work Saw has done. Good album from one of dancehall's finest.

English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20
Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.
This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.
You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09
The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.
A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17
I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15
And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.
The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.
The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.
A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Mixed Feelings.......2002-12-30
The Cutfather & Joe Remix of the song is absolutely awful. I'm sorry to say it, because the Corrs have been remixed many times by great people, but whoever decided to add a dance beat to this soulful masterpiece was messing with perfection. The added "bleeps" and "doinks" do nothing but demean what HAD been a flawless performance by Andrea Corr, and the bath bubbles make her sound drunk. I can't stand to listen to it for more than a few seconds. Sorry, guys, but remixing this classic was a bad idea.
All hope is not lost, however, because the album version of the song is featured on the single as well. Why not just buy the album? I wondered that myself -- until I heard track number three.
'Rebel Heart' is a touching instrumental written by violinist Sharon Corr and recorded by the band on "In Blue". It's remixed here, and the new version is better than the original, if that's possible. Imagine the heartache of Ireland's past, coupled with a blind, faith-filled hope for a peaceful future. The emotion of turbulence, pain, hope, joy...it's all magnificently captured in less than five minutes. Haunting, magical, yet gentle, it IS the power of the human spirit over tragedy.
Overall, this single gets four stars. While I can't stand the Remix of 'Give Me A Reason', the album version and touching instrumental are great pieces to hear, and you won't find the new version of 'Rebel Heart' elsewhere. Kudos to the Corrs for another great instrumental track.

Amazon.com essential recording
By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.
I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.
Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.
The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.
If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.
Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings
It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.
Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.
My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.
The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.
I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.
This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.
