5 out of 5 stars If you dont know, now you know........2002-03-22

I've been a part of the SF Night life on Wed, Thursday Friday Sat and Sundays at ENDUP for a few years now....
All the music I love to dance to is here!

4 out of 5 stars Showcase of electronica.......2000-12-15

I was a little reluctant to pick this one up because I don't like Fatboy Norman too much, but I decided to anyway because of my love for Oakenfold and my like toward Pete Tong. Essential Millennium is basically a showcase of three different genres in electronica. Paul Oakenfold mixes some good top 40 trance on his CD, Pete Tong weaves some melodic drum and bass, and Fatboy Slim, well, who knows what he spins. I don't mean that in a bad way, of course, it's just that Fatboy Slim's music has changed a lot recently, and I worry that he is going to sell his funk, techno origins to more top-forty hits like he did on his last album. I don't mind if mixes go top forty, I just hate musicians who sell their musical souls for mainstream sound (Can you say "Moby"?). But Slim's sound on EM is quite original and funk-inspired like his sounds before "Funk's Soul Brother" or "Praise You." Pete Tong's mix is a good chill out Cd for the late night when all is said and done. I really like his sounds, but I haven't purchased too much of his material because most of his stuff doesn't get to us Americans from England, at a reasonable price. Oakenfold spins some quality tracks very well like he does on Cream and GU:NY, but I had heard many of the tracks before like "Jumbo". Nevertheless, it is a good example of the kind of emotional, uplifting trance he spins on other albums. All in all, EM is a good representation of what these pioneers in electronica are about. I gave it four stars because it is not the full story, but it is a good one, nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars of Norman and Paul...Zero for pete.......2000-08-29

From the genius of Norman to the deep groove of Paul to the total and utter horror of Pete comes Millennium.

First the bad. Pete's completely unlistenable disk (which was a coaster until someone microwaved it) which is the techno equvalent of American Top 40, which overwhelms the listener with cliche beats, dull groves, and vocal stylings that will make one want to kill the cd player. Pete is easily the most overrated DJ alive and mercifully has never caught on in America

Now the good. Paul's groovy set, which doesnt start off as much but by the time it hits "bullet in the gun" the last half of the disk takes off with the high point being "See You In The Next Life". While not quite as strong as his last Global Underground, it is on par with his first "tranceport" cd.

Now the Great. Norman. I know he is a tad cliche'd in the UK, but the man can flat out mix. Rump shaking grooves (Mr X, Funky Fresh) bold choices (Chemmie's Psychedelic Reel mixed out of Jack it up) and the fiest moment of the set (I'm Ready revved into his own Everybody Loves A Carnival), a mix that left me giggling with pleasure. It is even better overall than live on the floor of the boutique

If you don't mind paying out the amount, it is quite a diverse and wonderful (even if i hate Tong) set

4 out of 5 stars Pete Tong is simply amazing.......2000-08-09

If it weren't for Pete Tong, I'd probably feel like I spent too much money on this collection. Thankfully, Tong has put on some of the best music I have heard in years on his disc. Under the Water (1), Rendez Vous (3), Music Sounds Better With You (4), U Don't Know Me (8), and Get Get Down (11) are beats that I just can't get enough of. I was really let down by the Fatboy Slim disc and expected much more from such a talented artist. The Okenfold disc is pretty average but still worth the purchase. All hail Pete Tong!

5 out of 5 stars Ssssuuper Doooopper.......2000-04-10

Great 3 cd set of non-stop techno music. The Tong and Oakenfold disc are good (I hadn't heard much from them before), and the Norman Cook cd just kicks. Fatboy is hands down the best DJ in the world (why they say Oakenfold is is beyond me). The FBS disc is quintessential Norman live. His best live album to date. Can't wait for the Essential Selection disc in a few weeks. Gotta love the Big Beat!
