Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

1 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for.......2005-09-20

I was mislead by a video of him spinning in a club. I had no idea that he used a lot of vocals in his music. I personally don't like vocals in Trance even if it has Acid mixed in. He also has a message he's trying to get across with his music and it's a message that doesn't appeal to me, so it's a little irritating because it's so strong in his music. I can kind of get into one song on the CD, so it wasn't a total loss.

5 out of 5 stars Great melodic trance album !!.......2003-05-04

The name might still be 'unknown' for most of people out there. But let me tell you, this guy has produced one of the most addictive & melodic trance albums outhere nowadays. Musically, I may compare his music with that of my other favorite artists (BLANK & JONES). So, for those who're questioning about what kind of trance KAI TRACID's producing should probably know now what genre he falls into.

Besides melodic, this album was crafted to content some of the most inspirational reasonings & thoughts in some of his tracks. Therefore, I particularly find the album to not only appealing musically but also spiritually. Plenty of strong tracks here.........there's hardly any filler here. If you think "4 Just 1 Day" was great, wait till' you listen to some other tracks on the album. Give this one a try for sure. Cheers for now.

    Album Description

Breeayn's music is deceptive: the softness of her voice, the sensitivity of her lyrics, the gentle strumming of her guitar, might be (mis)taken for lullaby. But as you listen longer, and with an ear tuned to the complexities of sound, the harmonies of voice and instruments, there is present here in spinning silver the songs of a poet, and philosopher, a woman wondering, a lover questioning. You begin to realize you are in the presence of a mind that moves at the lightning speed of its fingers, of hands that play at the pace of contemplation. And that is what the album invites you to do: come in, be soothed and also shaken--sit back and contemplate.

4 out of 5 stars Sunny Australian pop.......2007-05-25

Santhi is an Australian lady of Indian descent whose album, Sunflower, is a mostly very gentle journey of pop songs, some uplifting, some plaintive and others - well they just harmless pop songs. At the time it's release this gernered a little attention in Australia due to Santhis' Indian heritage and the fact that she collared some locally well known session musos to play on what is a very indie feeling album and due to her stated intent of putting some meat on the bone of her tunes via guitar.

All up though her Indian heritage makes no impact, except in some of the booklet photos. And as for the musicians, yes it's all nicely played but outside of Sydney, Australia, nobody much will care who the musos are. What is more likely to capture the listener is the excellence of some of the tunes here. The title track Sunshower is wonderful pop, nothing more and nothing less. Track two, Anymore, is also lovely. Both tunes ride a gently brisk tempo to keep the listener engaged in what are deceptively simple melodies. And that's coming from a guy who normally hates this kind of stuff.

As the album scoots along Santhi find it impossible to maintain such high standards but numbers like Meant and Less than Lovers work their gentle charms. The War Song also has an emotive feel to it and sets the listener up for the gentle acoustic reprise of meant to round out the album.

Personally a few more guitars further up in the mix would of been preferred - but that probably has more to do with the limitations of my personal musical tastes (I'm a headbanger) as opposed to any real flaws in the albums music. As for things to compare this to I'm at a loss. It's not power pop like Avril Lavigne or the excellent Damone. What it is however is independant flavoured singer-songwriter stuff that should be encouraged as unlike most young women her age, Santhi doesn't endlessly sing about sex or shove silicone enhanced features at her audience. Instead her palette is far more mature and encompassing than that.

Not revolution inducing, but darn glad I picked this up on a whim.

Every now and then someone needs to say something musically but can't find the words to say them. It could be lack of intelligence or possibly that there is no flow of musicality with the lyrics. Ben Jones fills both departments. With a constant barrage of slant rhymes and poignant metaphors the Viewfinder LP creates a cinch in the loophole of creativity in modern folk music (by it's actual definition.)
