Ultra Sex

Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine
Prince first dreamed up the blueprint for this kind of thing back in 1980 with the release of his galaxy-smashing Dirty Mind album. Glaring defiantly from the stark black-and-white cover clad in a pair of panties and a trench coat, the music inside was just as startling. Combing the swinging power pop of the Cars with gender-bending sexuality and a punk rock attitude, Dirty Mind can still warp a mind. Mount Sims, from his blurry ethnicity to the studded neon girls at his flanks, has obviously learned a thing or three from the purple pioneer. But where Prince was always channeling heroes like James Brown and Little Richard, Sim's sounds like he ultimately wants to grow up to become Soft Cell. So of course, DJ Hell's already snapped the young lad up, immediately making him a part of his stable of International Gigolos.

As such, Ultra Sex is loaded with analog tales of digital isolation ("Together Alone") and eternal desire ("If I Can't Have You"), portraying a cold world where love (or at least a little sex) is the ultimate — and only — salvation. "Delicious & Nutritious" gets tough like a lo-fi Green Velvet (who should get the call to do a remix). "Come and Get It" is rock-hard electro-funk, like George Clinton recording Computer Games back in 1982. "Black Sunglasses" is about as close as you'll get to Adult. without going to Detroit. Really, that's all just shorthand for "Mount Sims has got it going on."

5 out of 5 stars Variety is the spice of life.......2005-04-30

With "Ultrasex" Mount Sims has written and produced the Album most so-called Electroclash Acts have dreamed of.

Unlike contemporaries such as Avenue D., who as funny as "Do I look like a slut" may be, he has built with Ultrasex a universe centering around sex and technology, which at no time drifts into the ridiculous, superficial or pretentious, so it can easily exist within these confines, too.

'How we do', is one of the wittiest songs ever written about sex, without actually mentioning a rude word Just like the song's lyrics much of the album works on different levels, and is only fully understandable after several times of listening. Still, it mostly remains very accessible to people who may otherwise be unfamiliar with or in spite of the genre.

Whilst 'How we do" is thoroughly based within the field of Electro, HateF***, makes use of 4/4 techno bassdrum, whilst still souning raw.

'Rational behaviour' is a killer on the loose - it is as infectious as it can get, and so far I have yet to meet a person, no matter what genre they like, who does not enjoy this complex, exciting, partially prince- referencing monster of a song, who deserves much more attention than it has so far. The song sums up the energy of a very varied album, which is drawing influences from various genres, but combines them in an eminent way, few artists have close.

The rest of the Album is also great and the less hit-orientated tracks make a neccessary counterpart to the sometimes, overwhelming songs.

The first time I got hold of this Album was almost 3 years ago, it has lost none of the energy it had at the time for me, and I still count it amongs my current favourites.

This cd is absolutely amazing. Great music-great lyrics. The only way to really describe it properly is that it is infectious. Regardless of what kind of music you are into, this is a great electronic cd that everyone needs in their collection. It is funky and trashy and fun the whole way through. No real downers on this album and it just gets better and better as time goes on and on. If you like it on your first listen then you will love it by your fifth. Do yourself a favor and take a chance on this CD because you wont regret it.

Mount Sims is one of those groups that deserves so much more credit than they have received. Sure, Mount Sims has a following, but there are other groups like Ladytron and Fischerspooner who are receiving most of the acclaim for electroclash music. I think that Mount Sims takes things one step further by adding one more aspect to their music: real 80's revival. The best song on the album "How We Do" even has some fun lyrics with the singer saying "And the way you comb your hair, like it's 1982". The lead singer in Mount Sims is a male voice very similar to that of Felix Da Housecat. "Escape Hatch", "Black Sunglasses", "Togeter Alone" are all worthy and are the standout tracks on this album (in my opinion). "Escape Hatch" has the 80's video game synthesizers in it which sounds so freaking awesome when layered between around the male vocalist from Mount Sims. "Black Sunglasses" is a pretty big hit (and a good one) in the underground electroclash movement, as it appears on a handful of compilations. "Together Alone" is very, very, very similar to "Hella Good" by No Doubt, which was a big song in the USA last year. However, Mount Sims has even outdone that top hit with "Together Alone".

This is one of those albums that needs to be purchased early on. Don't put it off. I can't think of many electroclash albums in my collection that are more thrilling than this one.

5 out of 5 stars This album should come with a pack of condoms.......2003-10-22

This album is everything moist and utterly, humanly sexy...qualities most electronic/electro music lacks. The electronic beats are appealing in it's retro 80's New Wave feel, but the best parts are the juicy lyrics and the gutteral voice of Mount Sims. He can actually carry a tune, and writes really naughty lyrics that manage to be poetic also. My favorite is "Escape Hatch," which not only has a neo-pop, catchy melody, but also really profound lyrics that desribes how love/sex is an escape from the mundane, literally mechanical grind of daily life. When he croons, "I want to escape with you...under the naked glass...disappear in your room...look what the future has," it is really easy to identify with that intense image. Other good songs include: "How We Do" "Black Sunglasses" "Good Service" (I love the double entendre of this song) "Together Alone." If you like Human League, Dead or Alive, Giorgio Morodor, early Duran Duran and other 80s New Wave (especially electronic Brit groups such as New Order, Pet Shop Boys), plus earthy raunchiness, buy this album.
