Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Dub began with reggae producers like Lee "Scratch" Perry and King Tubby who reworked tracks they'd recorded by cutting vocals, dropping instruments in and out of the mix, and overlaying new sounds until they'd created a totally new composition. Instead of a final work, a recording became merely the raw material from which infinite new songs could be made.

Today, dub music flourishes both by staying close to its reggae roots and also by courting new flavors from hip-hop and techno. Planet Dub, a compilation from England's Planet Dog label, collects the work of 16 dub masters from the U.K. (where the current movement is strongest)--including 100th Monkey, Children of the Bong, Eat Static, and Alpha and Omega--on two one-hour discs. While some tracks are more rootsy and others more electronic--and some more melodic, more up-tempo, or more spacey--generally all the dubs blend together indistinguishably. What stands out, however, is the flux and flow of sound: the trippy beats, the heavy bass, the echoing, hypnotic washes. Though it won't displace our beloved melodies on pop radio anytime soon, dub offers a new construct for how music can be made. And, after all these years, our ears are finally beginning to catch up. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Favorite Dub Syndicate.......2007-03-16

This is my favorite Dub Syndicate release: I own a couple. This CD is some of the "newer" dub that I first heard back in the mid 90's. I'm not sure what one of the previous reviewers was talking about when they mentioned levels fluctuations, because I heard this for the first time cranked over a newly installed theater sound system during a system check by the tech's and it sounded great!
I'm a fan of Augustus Pablo, King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Syndicate does sounds different. Not a lot of horns and definitely a more synthesized sound, but I have to agree "no lack of rhythm and groove".

2 out of 5 stars Not so great Techno-Dub.......2003-08-11

Yes, this cd contains some spacey stereo effects. But, overall this is a poorly put together piece. The sound levels fluctuate, the stereo washes are inaccurate, the musicianship is minimal. Buy the cheapest used copy you can find if you must buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music to 'Chill' To.......1999-01-03

Fear of a Green Planet is a Reggae/Techno hybrid. There is no lack of rhythm and groove in this CD. There is also a healthy dose of spacey, cosmic sound. If you like newer reggae, such as Ziggy Marley or Finley Quaye for the sound more than the lyrics, then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Dub meets techno. Get ready to rumble your speakers.......1998-12-09

I'm a dub fan, big time. My friend turned me on to this CD. I must have it! It's Dub in a trip-hop sort of way but I would not call it dance or even ambiant. Dub meets Techno in Britian, that works. Nothing is bad on this CD and it is a great introduction to the artist on this label. It is two CD's and really worth the price. This one is worth adding to your dub collection!

    3 out of 5 stars unbalanced compilation.......2007-01-11

this compilation disappointed. I like a lot of Planet Mu artists and was psyched to get this release but it didn't deliver. I feel like this double CD had enough good cuts for a single CD and then was padded with a lot of left-field odd ball tracks and throw-away b-side tracks. It certainly didn't live up to the concept album sounding title. There was no common ground to tie all the tracks together.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhh Planet E.......2000-02-11

I`ve heard a good few artists off of Planet E and Recloose is certainly no exception from this label`s smokin` roster. I`ve read here on Amazon and elswhere that Recloose`s previous E.P, which I`ve yet to hear but will certainly aquire after listening to this one, was "noodly" and "abstract". Well listening to Spelunking I def. get the impresion that he`s lightened up a bit not to say that this release would be anything less. This guy can certainly poke you in alot of places over the course of one tune. That to me makes for the best music. I could def. get down to "Soul Clap" and "Get There Tonight" in a sweaty room somewhere and kickback in my Lazy Boy and enjoy yet another listen in my lonesome. Similar to other Planet E artists Recloose makes music for your body and mind not just your feet though the bottom end sound is always enough to shake yer rump.

            Album Description

The powerful Wordsound I Powa posse from Brooklyn in a hip hop reggae dub outing that could be likened to George Clinton's Parlaiment/Funkadelic let loose in a world of fantasy dubadelic!

            From the All Music Guide:
Though the album was released under ROIR's imprint, the usual home of Wordsound I Powa is Wordsound Records, where you'll also find such American reggae/hip-hop/illbient luminaries as Scarab, Spectre and the Crooklyn Dub Consortium. This collection of mostly dub-inflected reggae and illbient tracks features a number of Wordsound regulars, including Likkle Jer and the Rankin' Boopsman (who together deliver a nice Spanglish deejay performance on "Puro Malo") and Dr. Israel (who checks in with a restrained but impressive jungle remix of the boroughcentric "Saidisyabruklinmon Nobwoycyantess"). There's also a tedious and overlong piece of dub poetry and a number of thoroughly wicked bass-heavy instrumentals-"Bass Flight" is especially impressive with its! creative sampling and cavernous headspace. Nothing on this album will change the way you listen to reggae, but it's definitely a wise investment overall. — Rick Anderson
