The mixes may not be as 100% beat perfect as you would get on a CD mixed by one of today's' deejays, but remember that this is a live set with the minor flaws adding to the authenticity and charm. No studio software creation of perfect (and sometimes bland) mixes here. To my mind - and unlike the Studio 54 style - Larry never seemed to pick tracks purely on their "mixability" but rather selected his tracks on musical merit and then did a good job mixing them anyway.
I particularly like his very subtle use of two copies of Stephanie Mills "Put Your Body In It" where Larry starts the record not at it's rather cold intro but at much later vibey break and then continually mixes the same break over and over (if you listen at around 54 seconds and 1 minute 10 seconds and 1 minute 30 seconds into this track you can just pick this).
It's easy to see how he was such an influence on the current house style of sampling and repeating key elements of classic disco tracks. Check out the end of Trinidad by John Gibbs and the U.S. Steel Band where Larry first cuts in My First Mistake by The Chilites. Definitely the inspiration for "Needin U" as released by another Paradise Garage stalwart, David Morales!
This is an astounding set, all the more impressive when you realize it was recorded in 1979 and a piece of history well worth owning.

The Blueprint That All Other DJs Follow.......2006-05-06
WHEN YOU DO YOU WILL KNOW HOW IT WAS DONE AT THE PARADISE GARAGE. If there is any CD you get PLEASE get this one if you love Organic House Music,Dance Music, or Disco then this CD was made for you. I know that I love it you will too. And to all you DJs who want to compare Larry Levan to "today's standards" if it weren't for Larry Levan paving the way by polishing all the rough ends all you "purists" take for granted YOU wouldn't be out there. So if you truly want to keep Levan's spirit alive as DJs learn and REMEMBER what Larry Levan always KNEW: IT AIN'T ABOUT THE MIX IT WAS ABOUT THE MUSIC. You would do well to remember that when you plug into this CD and hear the Man who put his Soul into the Music and became the Music. Just tune in and feel the Love I sure did. Welcome to Paradise.

Album Description
New York's Paradise Garage. One of the most influential and most documented clubs in the history of dance music. The myth of the Garage (as it is known) and the clubs famed DJ Larry Levan has intensified since the club closed in 1987 and it is still rated by all who were there as one of the finest of all time.Emerging from New Yorks gay disco scene, the Garage followed the early 70s lead of David Mancuso's Loft and Nicky Siano's Gallery by firmly placing the DJ at the focus of the club. Larry Levan had previously gained a strong reputation from spinning at the Continental Baths (alongside Frankie Knuckles) and Michael Brody's Reade Street and when Brody laid down plans for a much larger, more ambitious venture, Levan was the automatic first choice. Brody's vision was revolutionary. In 1976, in a huge parking garage on King Street, in New York's SoHo neighborhood, he began construction parties with a view to creating, in that space, the finest club in New York . Unlike Studio 54, Xenon, New York New York and the other style clubs of the day where you went to see and be seen, people would go for the music, the dancefloor experience. Although the club was membership only (purchased annually after an interiew at the club), all were welcome--men, women, black, latin, white, gay, straight.
Brody had been a keen clubgoer for years and, by the time the whole building had been developed, he had cooked up a potent stew. The sound system was incredible, designed by audiophile Richard Long, the non-alcoholic bar provided free punch and fruit all night. The lighting was tight. And Levan controlled the crowd. People went there to dance and dance all night and they were under Levans spell.
Although much has been said about the Garage and bootleg tapes of Levan sessions have surfaced, there has never been a live DJ set by Larry Levan at the Garage made commercially available. Strut, in conjunction with New York's West End Records, are proud to release Larry Levan Live At The Paradise Garage, a classic set recorded live from the Garage DJ booth in 1979. The tapes capture the full spirit of the club with the emphasis on great tunes. This was a time when the message was in the music, a time before todays obsession with fluid mixing and Levan mixes up a host of tracks which were fresh at the time which have since become classics. From the soulful heights of Shalamar and Ashford & Simpson to the funkier grooves of Motown Sounds and Crown Heights Affair, this album a joy throughout.
The album is a testament to a club that has never been surpassed before or since for the sheer intensity of emotion that it created. Garage-heads still carry their membership cards with them. All become teary-eyed when they talk of the club. Larry Levan tragically passed away in 1992 but the spirit of the Garage lives on.

VINTAGE UNDERGROUND DISCO.......2003-02-28
paradise is the garage.......2003-02-23
DANCING ROOM ONLY -too dark to see -too sweaty to be pretty- girls in high heels dont belong there- grinding your body against complete strangers of both genders is expected. It was a group orgy of dance-worship to the tribal music gods. are there any clubs anywhere in the usa even close to that these days? if so, save my life and email me the 411. i'm dying to be dancing.
Hey Man, I like dancing to Disco!!.......2003-02-08
I was pleasantly suprised.
This is one damn fine party album - very danceable.
It exposed me to a lot of lesser known disco tracks (theres no blame it on the boogie or freakout here). Yes theres cheese here (it is disco) but theres also some rockin dance tracks here. Its had many repeat plays in my cd player.
I wasn't there at the time, but this is Live at the Paradise Garage by Larry Levan, so I guess it has to be somewhat representative of the sound being played then.
Overall - If like me you want an intro into the disco sound being played in clubs at the time - then this cd is well worth getting - you won't be disappointed.
Disappointed.......2003-01-14
