5 out of 5 stars A must have for "Fear and Loathing" fans.......2007-01-10

I love this cd because of the dialogue from the movie before each song. It is so funny and has some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Old School.......2006-11-11

This CD not only has the funniest diolouge out of the movie but it has awsome music, its great for back round music at a party.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack to a Fantastic Film.......2005-11-06

I love the movie, and I love the soundtrack. The only disappointment was the absence of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by the Rolling Stones. Everytime I hear that song I think of Raoul Duke speeding off leaving the insanity and chaos of Vegas behind him and desperately searching for sanctuary. But other than that, its an amazing soundtrack. I especially enjoy the audio clips from the film that play prior to each song.

4 out of 5 stars JohnnyLongStreet.......2005-10-31

It is true that this is a great collection of songs.

With that said, here are two complaints:

1) The audio snippets from the movie are built into the tracks, so they're tougher to skip through.

2) The audio transfer is terrible. Somewhere in the process, either at the transfer or the mix, the audio thinned out. There's a really weak bass end, and everything sounds thin and tinny.

Not that it ruins the experience, but for someone who's actually into how music sounds, you might look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite things.......2005-09-16

this is in response to the comment above: the song youre thinking of is called "my favorite things" by The Lennon Sisters. I dont know why they didnt put it on the album, they should have. anyway, thats the name of the song.

Beware dramatizations of unique literary works. Two years before critics pummeled the 1998 screen version of Hunter S. Thompson's tale of drug madness in Sin City, this audio rendition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas brought the ugly story to life. Fans of the book might prefer this recording to the film since it preserves more of Thompson's high-octane narrative. With Jim Jarmusch and Harry Dean Stanton sharing the Thompson/Raoul Duke role, this CD brings to life some of the book's more shocking scenes, making all too real what was merely amusing on the page. It's smartly done, even bringing in guitarist (and Keith Richards sideman) Waddy Wachtel to recreate "Sympathy for the Devil." But it's no substitute for the book itself. --Steve Appleford

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-01-12

this adaptation of the book was so much better than the movie version with johnny depp. the voice acting had so much more feeling and it was more true to the voices i had in my head when reading the book. don't get me wrong i liked the movie but this version will always be what i hear when reading the book over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Nice if Brief.......2006-04-20

This is a pretty good version of the cult classic boiled down to 76 minutes.

The best features--the voices catch the perfect tone, especially the deadpan duo of Jim Jarmush (who does Thompson as the character in the book) and Harry Dean Stanton (as Thompson the narrator). Together, they're far closer to the voice of the author than Johnny Depp's overcooked impersonation in the film.

On the downside, its cut a bit short, its annoying how the sequence of some of the opening passages are changed and also annoying that they didn't shell out the bucks to get the license for the real versions of the songs from the opening sequence, instead relying on a cheap knock off of Sympathy For the Devil.

Still, on the whole, no major complaints and a solid overall job.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Thompson, Sliced and Diced........2004-07-03

Ever since Hunter Thompson penned this drug-crazed masterpiece (1971), there have been endless talks about dramatizing it on film. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were at one point slated to play the attorney and mad Gonzo journalist, but alas, the project never came to fruition.

Fast forward to the year 1996. FEAR & LOATHING is now 25 years old, with no movie version in sight. And this "creatively" ABRIDGED version is what we get in terms of a dramatization.

Dr.Thompson makes a mumbling cameo appearance in the first and last tracks. Aside from that, his presence is only really felt during the opening and end sequences...when the text is not savagely sliced up into virtual incoherence.

There seems to have been an attempt to make this recording sound like a soundtrack from a non-existant(as of 1996)film, and yet, staying very true to the book by only using ONLY Thompson's words.

Complete confusion results. Where a scene takes place, one can only guess, by hints from the stereo sound effects. Also, there's the disconcerting casting of two people playing Raoul Duke. But this makes sense in a cinematic context. Harry Dean Stanton is the narrator, while the unemotional Jarmusch reads Duke's dramatized lines. You can at least manage to separate time and place in your mind, using this audio trick.

Overall, this recording feels like a well-produced radio commercial. Some of the supporting roles are played out in a very over-the-top radio DJ sort of way. Music creeps in regularly to keep the listener's interest.

The CD runs 76 minutes. It gives you a taste of Hunter Thompson. But only a taste. The harsh editing makes a mish-mash of the book. You might be better off recording the audio from Terry Gilliam's film onto CD - at least that would include larger portions of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A treat for Fear and Loathing fans.......2004-05-19

This spoken word collection of exerpts from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's classic book is a must for fans of the work. While the characters on the album can't really touch the way Depp and Del Toro handled the characters in the movie, the people do a fine job. I really like it because Breakdown on Paradise Boulevard is on it. It's one of my favorite parts of the book, and I wish it had been in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars catches the tone well.......2002-08-14

I really enjoyed this adaptation of one of my favourite books. It is funny and having become very familiar with the prose I think it is a faithful attempt by the creators to make something that reflects the material well. It makes me laugh and the main advantage of the format is that I can enjoy the book whilst driving. How cool is that?

    Album Description

Following the successful debut of Fear and Loathing in 2001, Resist returns with an eagerly awaited follow-up - Fear and Loathing 2. Although Luke Slater is generally regarded as a "techno DJ," on this album he explores a wide range of electronic music across various micro-genres, showcasing his diversity in music.

Mixing several upfront tracks together with essential tracks from the past, CD1 weaves from ambient sound-scapes by Planetary Assault System and Bola, through to the minimal click-house of Isolee, groovy beats of Agoria, to Carl Craig's remix of Throbbing Grislte's "Hot on the Heals of Love." CD2 is a dancefloor-filler mix taking in all that's hot in the world of electro and techno, including tracks from The Advent, Nitzer Ebb, and Alter Ego's underground smash "Rocker."

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Patchy.......2006-05-09

What a shame. I own Freek Funk and worship that album, so thought Luke should be able to do better than this. It's praised for being "varied". I'd call it patchy at best, more like sparse. CD1 is only worth it for the last 5 minutes, which are incredible. CD2 starts off promisingly, slumps, has an amazing tune and then gets totally mindless, headachy pots and pans too close to your ears until another fine recovery in the last few tracks. Not worth bothering with unless you could sit through the likes of Hard House Update without getting a headache.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of innovative techno.......2005-03-23

This is a great two disc set of some of the finest electronic music I've heard in years. I'm particulary fond of the Throbbing Gristle remix and the track by Chris McCormack. The Chris McCormack track nearly blew my mind the first time I heard it. Then it nearly blew my mind the next 20 times I heard it. It all fits nicely in a diverse, thoughtful, and surprising mix. As a long-time fan of electronic music I highly recommend this collection.

[....]From the second it arrives you will have problems putting the mix away. From start to finish you will be amazed at the level of tracks selected and the order they end up on the C.D.From track one,"Birdland" to Slaters very own,"Filter 2".The major contributors and players that rock the set are,"Player 6 Side A",Regis's,"Exercise for Institutions" and the three tracks Ben Simms contributes,"the basics","Loops" and the wonderfull tribal sounds of "minipulated".Also Marco Bailey's "The Green Hornet" is a banging industrial track.Actually in different areas you can detect industrial techno creeping in.However Disc 2 sways more towards an electronic vibe, but still is pretty sweet. It starts of with a classic, DHS's anthem "the house of god".Again Slater contributes with "all exhale".After track eight "gamma player" it falls upon electronic techno, however with the culmination of Disc 2,it goes on with a big time bang, with "subdued",an excellent Dave Clarke type tune,"banggin".And to end it all the man with the Giltz, Felix Da Housecat and his scary vocal tune,"Silver Screen-Shower Scene".Overall if you love the sounds of Dave Clarke,Ben Simms,Adam Beyer,Jeff Mills and of course Luke SLATER,this is the C.D for you to get your freak onto.So get it.

    STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP...

    STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP-STOMP...

    -pretty fair summary.

oh, but it's awesome, really. No-one takes so little and makes so much of it as Luke Slater. The idea of a double CD mix of such minimal beats seems virtually laughable, but, hell, once you're locked in on the unrelenting, hypnotic pulse, the subtle ebb and flow of the different tracks becomes compelling listening.

CD is fast-paced, lean, mean, scorched earth mayhem. You couldn't really call it party music, unless all your friends happen to be Ketamine freaks, but it's certainly won't send you to sleep. It just goes and goes and goes...

After that CD 2 is something of a surprise. Ok, it doesn't exactly switch to Britney Spiers' territory, but the vibe is slightly jazzy and flavorsome and the pace is slower. With a STOMPing martial beat, tho'.

It's noticable that amongst the highlights, say, Sharpside "Teiscodrop" and Ben Sims "Loops", Luke's own tracks shine the brightest - whether under his own name: "All Exhale" or as Planetary Assault Systems. Putting seven of your own tracks on your DJ mix CD is usually an embarrassing ego trip, but here it simply reads as "oh, well, since I own the genre, I might as well put my stuff on here."

If you ever found yourself listening to a loud industrial banging noise and thinking 'hey, that sounds kinda cool', this is the CD you've been waiting for.
