DJ Kicks: The Black Album

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This release from Rockers Hi-Fi is a reflection of the genius of Kruder & Dorfmeister, the exception being a more firm root in dub & reggae. The Black Album showcases Nicolette-style vocals in the genius of Farda P. rich, deep sophisticated lyrics combine with D -n B & dub/reggae. Only recently has the chemistry between 'Da Tosta' Farda P., Glyn Bush & Richard 'Dick' Whittingham delivered fertile products in the sound laboratories of Different Drummer. Farda P. worked closely with Rockers Hi-Fi on their last album 'Mish Mash', which made Rockers Hi-Fi, almost over night, one of the most respected bands of this genre. The musical scope stretches from dub-tracks of Ruts DC & Rhythm & Sound by Maurizio to trip hop by Snooze & DJ Cam to the atmospheric d -n- b soundscapes by T-Power & Kid Loops. The collection is finished off by American cult acts like Small Fish With Spine & Dr. Israel. This is Rockers Style -

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the black album is a dub classic.......2005-11-30

this is rockers hi fi at the dublicious best. i love the sequence and the mix. if you are looking to bass test your speakers this is the cd. better than mish mash and so much better than the over hyped overproof.
yes, this is using the tracks of other artists, but the rockers make it their own.
genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2003-05-02

This CD is ok if you like repetitive electro beats with some silly toasting mixed in...but as much as I tried, I simply couldn't get into it. For the DJ Kicks series, I'd recommend Smith & Mighty or Druder & Dorfmeister. Both of those discs are fantastic and offer a much more diverse blend. Thievery Corporation does a great job as well.

Rockers Hi Fi hit it with Mish Mash, but this one falls short in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Rockers Hi-Fi: Best in DJ Kicks Series.......2001-11-13

Staying true to their sound-system roots, the Rockers are prolific in their production of mixtapes which incorporate live DJing, chatting, toasting and mixing-desk mayhem: what they call 'Dex'n'Fx'.

It was only a matter of time therefore before they were invited by Berlin based label !K7 to produce a 'DJ Kicks' compilation - subtitled 'The Black Album' because of the ramifications of stepping outside the normal boundaries of their deal with Warners. Along with Kruder and Dorfmeister - whom they hold in deep and mutual respect, and who added their own brand of magic to the remix of 'Going Under' from 'Mish Mash', - this was one of the best selling albums in the DJ Kicks series.

5 out of 5 stars Wax Lyrical.......2000-04-21

Rockers Hi Fi wash over their mixing talents on this DJ Kicks series. The boys blend each track with the splendid deep bassed tones of 'toasting' Farda P who gives an intro into each track. Highlights include 'Callacop' and 'Candles and Versions'. The Black Album is very unlike other Rockers Hi Fi material such as 'Rockers to Rockers' and 'Mish Mash' nevertheless sit back and let Rockers Hi Fi take you through a journey of sound - well recommended ! The Best DJ KIcks of them all !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Head Pleasure.......1999-11-10

Pure head pleasure is what this album delivers. Sonic drones, reggae spliffs, and fat knowledge. Crank this mo up! Chill.
