5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2005-11-18

I know that WOW is kind of a small word but this CD ROCKS! I have loved queen for years. I originally bought this CD for my 10 year old son who took up the violin this year and who loves queen as much as I do but it quickly became mine. I've heard some pretty bad imitations, remakes, and ripoffs. I can honestly say that this CD is none of the above. You get 10 of Queens best. 1) Killer Queen, 2) Bohemian Rhapsody, 3) We Are The Champions, 4) We WIll Rock You, which happens to be my favorite on this disk, 5)Fat Bottomed Girls, 6)Crazy Little Thing Called Love, 7) Somebody To Love, 8) Play The Game, 9) You're My Bext Friend, 10) Another One Bites The Dust. The only downside to this disk is that they left out about a hundred other songs. I sincerely hope that The String Quartet comes out with a volume 2, but why stop there. They could go on forever with just Queen Classics.
Do yourself a favor. If you like Queen and Classical Music BUY THIS CD. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars YES!!!!.......2005-06-05

Two words: Bohemian Rahpsody.

THey could have released a CD with only this song and I would have bought/borrowed/stolen it to get it. This song is definitely a highlight, but don't stop there, since the rest of the CD will make you want to play it over and over again.

If you've been thinking about buying a String Quartet Tribute, but don't know which to buy, I would buy this one, without a doubt.

5 out of 5 stars What's Not To Like?.......2005-08-19

I bought this CD primarily, because I don't own any other Freddie King CD's, had decided to try him out and this was the only one available at my local record store.

Having listened to it for several days now I can write a one word review: FANTASTIC!

I've read the other reviews concerning this CD and have learned that Freddie, like most other musicians, apparently evolved and changed stylings somewhat over time. The work during his Shelter Records time certainly does have a 70's sound. And it does have a definite Leon Russell footprint, in production and sound, including Leon's signature piano tinklings and his gospel-esque background vocals on many cuts. But what's wrong with that? The answer is: Absolutely Nothing!

This CD is great from start to finish. Freddie unleashes some wonderful guitar riffs and his vocals are straight from blues heaven.

In short....... if Freddie's early stuff is half as good as his efforts later in his career, than I'm in for a quite treat when I can locate some of them.

Point is; you can't go wrong with this CD. Shelter era, Pre-Shelter era..... It's all Freddie King!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-07

I absolutely love this album. Track after track King proves himself to be a blues guitar giant who had much influence over the next generation of guitarists. One important factor that makes many of these songs as good as they are is that King's voice is marvelous and does a great job of supplementing his guitar work. His guitar phrases are beautifully done. King's sound is really nice- it's almost a tight sound, and very invigorating. I love ninety percent of the tracks on this album, it's one of those albums where each song really is great, track after track. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars As Advertised!.......2003-04-19

Yes, as another reviewer mentions, I also prefer the older Freddy King stuff... BUT, I could not live without 'Goin'Down', and _this_ cd is the best place to have it on. These truly are the best Freddy tracks from the Shelter period,( the tracks that I skipped over before are gone now), and the new mix is noticeably better. To complete the rehab, the pamphlet notes,(by Bill Dahl, who also compiled the set), are more complete and worthwhile than anything on the originals.

4 out of 5 stars Impacting Blues.......2002-11-01

I got this album simply because there was a quote from Eric Clapton on the cover saying that Freddie King was an essential influence on his guitar style. As noted in other reviews, this is quite apparent. The CD offers some great songs and passionate blues and is highly recommended for those interested in quality blues. My favorites are "Woman Across the River," "Going Down," and "Palace of the King" (since I was born in Dallas myself!!) This is a great album, don't overlook it!

3 out of 5 stars Best of the Shelter Years is exactly that.......2002-09-14

This is a hard CD to review. On the one hand, if this was all I knew of Freddie King, I'd say it was very good. On the other hand, if you know of his recordings for King/Federal, this definitely pales in comparison.

The songs are largely covers, which is strange as King showed himself, in his earlier recordings, capable of writing blues classics all on his own. Some kind of hilarious cover-tune nadir is reached when they take John Fogerty's country tune, "Lodi," and turn it into a fast shuffle. Freddie insists on singing, "Stuck in Lowdown again," instead of Lodi, thus accounting for the song title "Lowdown in Lodi."

Another minus: the instrumentation and recording reeks of the 1970s; no reverb, flat drum sounds and (shudder) strings a' la' B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone" on some songs. Leon Russell made sure his keyboards were right up there in the mix, too; not so much that they overwhelm Freddie King's guitar and vocals, but he's definitely trying to prove he's there.

Another drawback is the 70's funk touches on some tunes, which make it sound like Freddie's trying to encroach on Albert King's 70's territory. The problem is that the musicians here aren't terribly funky. Albert had Stax's house band when he went toward the funky blues, where Freddie here has to contend with guys who sound like they would be more at home on a J.J. Cale record.

Overall it's really shocking how much this resembles an Eric Clapton record from the 1970s. If you were to find someone who had never heard of Freddie King, and play this album and any one of Clapton's mid-70's albums back to back, they might be forgiven for thinking it was all the same guy.

But...Freddie King performs magnificently. His vocals are in top form and his guitar playing is stellar. I feel like a curmudgeon for even pointing out the flaws in this, simply because none of the blame for the flaws lands on Freddie. He does what he does best, which is sing and play guitar like an angel.

So, let's sum up: this is not as vital or as essential as Freddie King's recordings for King/Federal records, not by a long shot. But if you prefer your blues on the rock & roll side, are fond of mid-70's Eric Clapton, or are curious to hear how Freddie King evolved/devolved (according to your opinion) during his Shelter Records period, this would be a good choice, because it would be a lot easier to get through this than the original three albums that this is drawn from.

This may well be the best of the Shelter Records years, but don't confuse it for the best of Freddie King. That title goes to CD's like "Let's Hide Away And Dance Away," and "Freddie King Sings," both of which you should get before you invest in this.

But, again, Freddie King is in top form vocally and instrumentally here, so it's a very hard call. Anyone who is a Freddie King fan, but hesitates to invest in his flawed later work would probably find this CD to be all they would need of his music from the 70's. And those who fell in love with Freddie during his nonstop tours with rock stars in the 1970s will dig this deeply. I would still recommend the King/Federal work over this, but "The Best Of The Shelter Years" still has its strong points.

The packaging is awful. Hardly any notes and no song info.

My advice: Wait until a better, more classy collection is released.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of British Invasion tracks.......2002-08-06

Actually this CD version is a scaled down version of the
8 Track version which was purchased years earlier by
someone in my family. For those of you who are interested,
here's the track listing on the 8 Track version of this
album, and to see how the CD version differs:
Program 1 *How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - The Bee Gees
Ferry Cross The Mersey - Gerry And The Pacemakers
Bus Stop - The Hollies Georgy Girl - The Seekers
It's All In The Game - Cliff Richard
Program 2 **A Summer Song - Chad And Jeremy Glad All Over -
Dave Clark Five I'm Telling You Now - Freddie And The
Dreamers Do Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann I Go To Pieces -
Peter And Gordon Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry
And The Pacemakers
Program 3 Trains and Boats and Planes - Billy J. Kramer
A World Without Love - Peter And Gordon *I Started A Joke -
The Bee Gees Hippy Hippy Shake - Swinging Blue Jeans **
Willow Weep For Me - Chad And Jeremy Bits and Pieces -
Dave Clark Five
Program 4 I'll Never Find Another You - The Seekers
*Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream Stop Stop Stop - The Hollies
Do You Want To Know A Secret - Billy J. Kramer *The Sun
Ain't Gonna Shine - The Walker Brothers
*By Special Arrangement With Polydor Ltd.
**These Tracks Licensed From Ember Records, London

All in all a nice collection of tracks from the
British Invasion era, but it's kind of skimpy
when compared to the 8-track version of the same
album. Perhaps Capitol Records can renew their
agreements with Polydor and Ember Records, or
the parent companies if they are subsidiaries,
so we can get the 8-track version of this album
on CD. Anyways, Bus Stop is a well-known Hollies
tune that was penned by Graham Gouldman, who also
was responsible for a few tracks by The Yardbirds
that are fairly well known (For Your Love and
Heart Full of Soul). Ferry Cross The Mersey was
a pretty big hit for Gerry And The Pacemakers, and
is another pop tune. Gimme Some Lovin has been
used a lot on TV, movies and commercials. This
is one of Steve Winwood's groups in the 1960s.
Traffic and Blind Faith are two others, and it's
basically a good soulful tune that can be sung
too. I'm Telling You Now by Freddie & The Dreamers
is another pop hit that might seem familiar to
some people. Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Hippy Hippy
Shake, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother and
Georgy Girl are familiar pop tunes that have
been used for commercial uses over the year,
so many should be familiar with these hits.
The other four tracks I'm not very familiar
with, but this album runs a little over 30
minutes altogether, and I would recommend
purchasing it if you love music from the
original British Invasion era of rock music.
This contains a lot of pop music on this
album, however, unlike the manufactured
pop music of some of today's artists, this
pop music is quality pop music, not artificial
synthesizer manufactured crass commercialized
junk that seems to infest the airwaves these
days. In those days, pop music was actually
worthy of listening to. The lyrics are
thoughtful and the melodies are enticing
enough to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars I like.......2006-02-16

this is a good CD. Has Freddie and the Dreamers biggest hits on it seems to be a good recording of the hits, too.

5 out of 5 stars When music was fun.......2006-02-01

Pay no attention to the reviewer who puts this CD down - it's great. No pretentiousness, just 25 songs that are fun to listen to, three of which were never released in the U.S., and a few others only available if you can find the 45's. Freddie and the Dreamers are one of the groups that put the fun in rock & roll and deserve to be better known today. This may be the only way to hear them, most so-called oldies stations don't play much of anything that came before Woodstock.

5 out of 5 stars Fun sixties pop.......2005-01-24

Freddie and the dreamers liked to have fun, yet they were competent musicians ant their music stands the test of time. In their British homeland, they had four top five hits, two other top twenty hits and three minor hits. They never made the top spot in the UK but they did in America. Their UK hits were a mix of original songs and covers of American songs.

The group's career began with If you gotta make a fool of somebody (originally recorded by James Ray) and I'm telling you now (an original song), both of which made number two in the UK during the summer of 1963 Their next single, You were made for me, peaked at number three in December 1963. The first two singles of 1964, Over you (an original song) and I love you baby (a cover of a Paul Anka song) both made the top twenty but failed to reach the top ten. It seemed that Freddie and the dreamers were fading fast, especially when Just for you (another original song) was only a very minor hit. However, they finished 1964 on a high when I understand (a cover of a G-clefs hit of 1961) made the UK top five.

1965 proved to be disappointing for them in the UK, yielding only two minor hits, A little you and Thou shalt not steal - the latter being a cover of a Dick and Deedee song that was banned by the BBC. However, Freddie and the dreamers toured the world that year and had several American hits including I understand (a number one hit) and Do the Freddie (which never charted in the UK).

Realizing that their pop hit days were over, Freddie and the dreamers switched to club and cabaret work, eventually joining the sixties revival circuit.

This compilation contains all the essentials by a group that was far more talented than their image might suggest.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the Clown Prince of the British Pop Invasion.......2003-01-01

I could make a comment about how "The Very Best of Freddie & The Dreamers" has less tracks than "The Best of Freddie & The Dreamers," but who wants to take a shot at Freddie? Yes, it was hard to take Freddie & The Dreamers seriously simply because they were pretty much the self-appointed clowns of the British Invasion, just along for the ride with no desire or pretensions of making anything other than pop music. No messages here, just fun and laughs, probably best represented by the song "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody" and, of course, the group's infamous appearances on American television with "Do the Freddie." Freddie, as you might remember, was Freddie Garrity, who moved from skiffle groups to rock 'n' roll in the early Sixties, adopting the Merseybeat sound when the Beatles led the British Invasion of America. Freddie & The Dreamers, like many of the Merseybeat groups, were more successful in England than there were in the United States, although the group did have their only #1 hit, "I'm Telling You" on this side of the pond. "You Were Meant For Me" and "How About Trying Your Luck With Me" are probably the best other pair of tracks on the album. More pop than rock to be sure, but then somebody needed to balance Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones in the eyes of American parents, and Freddie and The Dreamers certainly fit the bill in that respect. However, the best reason to pick up a Freddie and The Dreamers collection is because they are still quite representative of the Merseybeat sound that the early Beatles epitomized and which still resonates with those of us who remember the British Invasion, which came in the wake of JFK's assassination, with special fondness.

COME ON NOW! All you blue-nosed critics who are putting down Freddie Garrity and co. need to LIGHTEN UP! This music is about having FUN! When Freddie "Did the Freddie" on Shindig, Hullaballo, Ed Sullivan, etc. it was all about LAUGHS and having a GOOD TIME. Yes, it's so OUTRAGEOUSLY stupid that it's good. I would recommend that you rent a video of Freddie and co. on Shindig doing their outrageous dances before you listen to this, so that you'll REALLY be in on the joke. "I'm Telling You Now," it's time to "Do The Freddie."
