I just received the Complete National Anthems of the World and have listened to every one of them. I enjoy the anthems and the presentation. But I was disappointed that the anthems didn't include the singing. Without the singing, the musical pieces lose their contexts. It is interesting to observe that, with relatively few exceptions, although most people are proud of their national anthems, they are loathe to listen to and enjoy them. The producers of this collection missed a great opportunity to turn the national song into a genuine musical masterpiece by not including the sung lyrics.

Imagine owning all the national anthems of the world on eight CDs! Can't imagine it? Well, there must be an audience for this collection - libraries, governmental and other organizations that greet visiting dignitaries, schools, whoever. There was an earlier edition of this collection in 1998 but since that time there have been many geopolitical changes that necessitated a new collection with the addition of the national anthems of, among others, Russia (!), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq (maybe they'll be getting a new one now), Rwanda, Qatar, Somalia and Afghanistan.

The anthems (or national hymns) are played in arrangements made by conductor Peter Breiner, who leads the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in perfectly acceptable performances. In many instances there are two recordings of a national anthem -- the full anthem, and a shortened version for playing at awards ceremonies at the Olympics and other international competitions.

Obviously eight CDs filled with ceremonial music is a bit much to take in all at once. I will admit that I did not listen to every note of every anthem, but I heard enough to form some opinions. My first notion is that I find it strange that although most of these anthems were written by natives of the countries involved, there is not a lot of indication of national or ethnic identity if one hears them 'blind.' There are some surprises, though. Kenya's anthem sounds quite ethnic (and stirring); the anthem of Zanzibar is by that eminent early twentieth-century British musicologist, Donald Francis Tovey, and sounds a bit like Elgar. Not all are marches, for instance; somewhere along the way there was a lovely, lilting waltz but I'm darned if I can recall which country it represents. (Sorry!)

The bottom line is that here are wholly acceptable performances of the national anthems of countries (and regions, and aspirant ethnic groups) from Acadia to the Basque Region to the Isle of Man to Madeira to the Marshall Islands to Nagorno-Karabakh to Pitcairn Islands to Tajikistan to Tuvalu to Zimbabwe. Also included are the hymns of the United Nations, the European Union and the International Olympic Committee. The booklet contains pictures of the countries' flags, the first line or two of the words to the anthems, the composer and lyricist and when the anthem was written, and when the anthem was adopted as official.

As I say, this collection is absolutely not for everyone, but it certainly serves its very specific purpose quite well.

With twenty-nine national anthems and John Williams' "Olympic Theme", this album offers a reasonable variety of anthems. (Curiously, there is nothing from the USSR/CIS/Russia!) The recording quality is excellent. The interpretation of the anthems seems to attempt to give an 'appropriate' national flavour to each one. This does not always seem to work. For example, China's "Ch'i Lai!" sounds more like incidental music than a national anthem. There is an interesting rendition of France's "La Marseillaise". While it lacks the 'big' sound usually associated with this anthem, it is distinctive - and is probably a quite good representation of how it might have sounded back in 1792. If, however, you prefer the 'big' sound this version will be a disappointment. Argentina's "Sean eternos los laurales", Canada's "O! Canada" and John Williams' "Olympic Theme" are excellent, but Belgium's "La Brabanconne/Het Belgisch Volkslied" is disappointing and dirge-like. The anthems are performed by a chamber orchestra and consequently have neither the 'big' sound of a full orchestra, nor the martial sound of a military band. The album takes a distinctive approach to the anthems. Whether this approach works is ultimately a matter of personal taste. If you enjoy the more intimate sound of a chamber orchestra, this album will probably be to your taste.

      3 out of 5 stars Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30

      As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).

      That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.

      The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.

      For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.

      Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

      The poor audio quality of the recorded anthems makes this CD unusable for public events and personal listening. The highs are are not clean and the mids and lows are missing. Each anthem is performed so much like the next one that the unique flavors of each does not come through.

      Not only the composer for Romania's anthem is wrong, but so is the tune!!! The CD was released in 1994, but the anthem at that moment was already changed (in 1990).

      Cannot believe I'm even reviewing this CD,but I do like other patrons seeing what I have to say about music releases. This is by far very different than any other disc I've ever covered.What you get here are twenty-seven national anthems of countries like the UK, Western Germany, USA, Japan, Finland, Turkey,etc. This is not my cup of tea at all. Not even close. The only people I've ever known to enjoy this sort of music are Civil War buffs,history fanatics and citizens over 80 years old.

      Matei Socor composed romania's anthem used during 1953-1977
      but certainly not this one (namely the "Three Colours")on this CD. please correct it and prevent confusions

      Waltzing Matilda certainly isn't the national anthem of australia, but speaking as an australian it is a much better, much more australian song than advance australia fair and SHOULD be the national anthem. Granted, it's an inexcuseable mistake but personally it makes the purchase a better one

        In the former Soviet Union, each of the 14 "Union Republics" (with the exception of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic) had its own "national anthem." This collection--by Soviet-era orchestras and choirs--is the only one of its kind. All of the former SSRs (Soviet Socialist Republics) are represented, along with the famous USSR anthem which was banished for a time under Boris Yeltsin but now (with new lyrics) lives again as the anthem of the Russian Federation.

        The music represents the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Soviet Empire: the heroic melodies and broad harmonies of the USSR and Ukrainian anthems reflect the expansive gestures of Orthodox church music; the Georgian anthem draws from the dissonant harmonies of Georgian sacred and folk music; the Armenian anthem, by the famous Soviet-Armenian composer Khatchaturian, has the Middle Eastern feeling of the Armenian folk idiom.

        The lyrics--which unfortunately are not translated--are typically bombastic. Verses expressing fealty to the "Party of Lenin" and praising the inspiring example of the "Great October" are normative. The word "glorious" appears to be inescapable. If you want a feeling for this style, check out the translations of the old USSR anthem available on the web.

        Apart from their origins in different folk idioms, the musical styles tend to range from militant (Armenia and Azerbaijan) to sentimentally lyrical (Latvia and Lithuania). The Latvian anthem, in fact, is unique in this collection because it is the only one in which (without knowing the words) it is difficult to imagine that you are striding confidentially into the future in unity with the Party of Lenin following the heroic example of the Great October. Instead, the melody seems to evoke the quiet villages, rolling hills and gentle beaches of this small Baltic country. In contrast, the anthems of the Soviet Central Asian Republics are close in musical spirit to the score of any of Cecil B. DeMille's blockbuster Hollywood costume dramas. One can visualize hordes of heroic Kyrgyz, Uzbek or Turkmen horsemen sweeping across the dusty plains of Asia ... all in the name of socialism, of course.

        Each of these anthems suffered a different fate after the USSR disappeared from history. The countries with the strongest national traditions (the Baltic states and Ukraine, for instance) restored older pre-Soviet anthems. Other republics retained the Soviet-era melody but wrote new lyrics. That was true especially of republics where the old Soviet nomenklatura still hold power: Belarus and Kazakhstan, for instance. Sadly, Armenia got rid of Khatchaturian's stirring composition: the music was, perhaps, too militant--and too confident of a glorious future--for a postmodern world.
