5 out of 5 stars Project Skyward.......2005-04-27

Project Skyward is the brainchild of Ryan Skyward (Vocals/FXGuitars/Synths/Bass/Programming) and Lana Fia (Vocals/Analog Synth). Skyward create a sound that has the mix of space rock, ambient synth, and 80's synth bands. They have an Ulrich Schnauss meets M83 feel that is blended with the Pet Shop Boys. Skyward's voice reminds me a lot Neil Tennant. Strange Synchronicities is Project Skyward's first full length disc and it is a fantastic debut LP.

"Into the Orion Nebula" is spacey and ethereal from the very beginning. It has blips with spacey, floating synths. This is a 5-minute entry into the world of Project Skyward and it really sets up the listener for this coherent LP. Eventually a back-beat comes into the picture and adds depth to the vastness of their spacey canvass. The beats change and become muffled as the song works its way toward then end. Voices come into the mix and really give it a ecclesiastical feel. I find this song to be breathtaking and beautiful with broad soundscapes that cause the listener to float along. "A Flash of Light" blends seamlessly with "Orion," but this song is very different since it has more structure and it includes Skyward's fantastic vox. Fia's ghostly and angelic vocals float in the background of the pulsating beats and layers of keys. This song reminds me of those moments in a club when all the lights are perfect, the smells in the air are intoxicating and you have no choice but to dance and have a great time. "Distant Blue" is quieter and has a more trip-hop feel to it. The electronic elements are still heavy in the song, but "Blue" is more ballad-like with Fia's and Skyward's vocals working together perfectly as they creating a floating feel to the tune.

"Blind" changes the mood a bit with a danceable beat starting off the song. The track is softened by a low hum, bass, and some floating clicks and blips. Fia takes front vocalist on this track and she shows that she is perfect for that position. This song is a bit pessimistic as she sings angelically, "The blind leading the blind/Into the end of time.../Can our future survive/Can we open up our eyes?" It seems here to be a political statement, but, of course, it is difficult to say and open to a number of interpretations. "Between Two World" has listless keys and Skyward's vocals are very much at the forefront of this mix. The mood is one of ease and then the beat picks up in a very nice change. The keys stay floating and listless, but the beats become more complex and intricate as they are layered. This does not take away from the mood at all. In fact, this complexity amazingly enhances the ease that is communicated at the beginning of the track.

"Shine" begins with a club like bass thumping and whirling, silvery sounds. Tatyana Koziupa makes a guest appearance on this track as vocalist. Her cadence on this song feels a bit like Bjork, but without the accent. The mood on this song seems more uplifting and less pessimistic than "Blind." A ray of incredible hope shines through this track and brings a different side to the album, filling the void of space with happier sentiments. "An Afternoon In Sedona" is another instrumental track that has lush soundscapes mixed with Project Skyward's techno expertise. The voices mixed in with the synths and beats are gorgeous and have a chanting feel to them. "The Alien" is the most ambient track on the disc, and, I think my favorite. It is soothing and floating as Skyward takes the listener into vast, ambient soundscapes.
Moving from techno beats and listless ambience to 80's synths and angelic vocals, Project Skyward has constructed a coherent and captivating first full-length. There were more tracks on the disc that I did not mention, but I felt that I had given my reader more than a feel for the disc already. That said, I did not leave them out because they were low points on the disc, just that they are a seamless part of this coherent album and I may have been a bit redundant in my writing. If you dig Ulrich Schnauss or M83, you should probably go pick this disc up. You won't regret it.

As someone who listens to a great deal of "atmosphere pop", I can say with conviction that this is better than most in the genre. Worth a listen.

3 out of 5 stars It's not THAT great........2006-10-02

Bedrock has got to be overall one of my favorite labels, when they get cds right, theyre always amazing. Take Chris Fortiers' and Jimmy Van M's Bedrock cds for instance, they're both some of the best dark, deep, progressive house mixes out there, from beginning to end . But many times i have bought other Bedrock cds such as this one or Foundations and find them to be somewhat boring. They're so prog that they eventually just get boring and long and make me want to skip the cd forward. But they do have some really good moments in between. So yes, the cd does have some nice parts but there's lots of boringness in there also. Overall, i recommend the cd only if you are already familiar with Bedrock and really want it, not if this is your first time listening to other Bedrock cds.

5 out of 5 stars Bedrock delivers again.......2006-04-13

Props to Bedrock Records for another quality compilation. Disc 2 here is a mixed set of the spacy, breaks-inflected progressive house that Bedrock is known for. It has some nice tunes, especially in the banging middle section (best artist name ever: "Astro and Glyde"), but it's pretty much what you'd hear on a Friday night big room dancefloor. Disc 1 is where things are at. It's a compilation of downtempo tunes; some are ambient and some have hip hop beats. At times, the cuts get airy and frictionless (this *is* Bedrock we're talking about), but when the ingredients gel, as they often do, the results are downright beautiful. Check out Yunus Guvenen's "Indigo" for some tear-jerking business - definitely one for the chill-out room.

3 out of 5 stars More like progessive breaks..........2005-09-09

I give it 3 stars from a prog. house point of view. There's no arguing that Diggers' has it going on but this is NOT a progessive house album. A few tracks lead you towards it but then leads right back to prog. breaks. It you want progessive breaks then you will totally love this. Personally breaks feel slower to me - not that I haven't danced my ass of to some great break sets at desert parties - but Layered 1 CD 2 has my vote.
RE: the downtempo - it's good but if you're looking for some great chill go to Kruder & Dorfmeister. I plan on trading LS2 in.

5 out of 5 stars Great chill cd yet even better uptempo mix .......2005-08-25

Once again Bedrock brings yet another great mix for all to enjoy. This is vol.2 of the layered sounds mix comps. and in my honest opinion many steps above its vol.1. Cd1 is Bedrocks downbeat selections and I must say (though I am not too much into the chill or downbeat mixes) this cd has truly a great sound. It seems to me that most "Chill" cds seem to have a bit to many obsucure tracks that do not mix to well. I really like the flow and the track selection of cd1. A bit like the amazing Northern Exposer feel. Now on to the reason I bought this cd, CD2 "upbeats" has some amazing Prog. house tracks. A much better and DEEPER mix than vol.1 with lush sounds and some GREAT remixes. I have purchased almost every big label release at the moment (Renaissance, Global Underground, Balance, Tiesto's new ISOS)yet this mix(more so disc 2) seems to be getting played a bit more. Both cds are Great prog./chill mixes that should not be missed by both fans.

5 out of 5 stars Layered 2 Perfection.......2005-08-20

Last year, Layered Sounds 1 certainly hit me the right way, but I'm just a tad partial to these stylish Downbeats vs. Upbeats two disc compilations we've been seeing from the big prog labels. This year, Layered Sounds 2 exceeds the high standards set by its venerable predecessor. If you enjoyed the first, you'll love the second. To say that Disc 1 (the Downbeats) delivers a delicious chillout vibe is perhaps an understatement. Ever hear something that struck you as so beautiful in places it gave you the chills? That sums it up better. If you've ever made a mix tape or CD yourself, you'll notice that different mixes of the same song -- Terry Grant's "I'll Kill You" -- mark the opening and closing on the first set. Jennifer Horne's amazing voice notwithstanding, you'll wonder why Digweed would employ such a programming cliché as that. It's that fine line between genius and madness thing. Digweed's on the side that starts with a "G." And the rest of the set goes down like a slightly techy, late afternoon cocktail savored aurally on the Balaeric island of your choice. I'll have another, while you're up.
Disc 2 (the Upbeats) will prep you right for the evening's magic ahead -- you know, that mild, anticipatory adrenaline rush before heading out. The track list includes selections by Digweed himself (under the Bedrock moniker), Derek Howell ("Happy To Be Sad"), Pole Folder ("Salvation On Slavery Sins"), POB and Taylor ("Aura"), as well as Luke Fair, Steiger, and others. Much better than this, it does not get.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars solid as bedrock.......2004-04-22

as the previous reviewer has outlined, this is a double cd set. John Digweed did NOT mix disc one. I have no idea why. The compilation is IMO an extension of the Stark Raving Mad disc with some classic oldies that groove along with some newer stuff in the mix. I really enjoy both discs but I think I like disc 2 better because it really sounds fresh to me. I really think that Digweed could have done better with this one and as I understand it this release was delayed several months and that is why many of the tracks seem more appropriate for last summer's new and hip tunes showing up mid spring 2004. In short this is not near the original by digweed, it is more uplifting and less minimalistic than Chris Fortier's or Jimmy Van M's releases and overall a move in the right direction. The fact that diggers did not mix his own set is troubling. can he set the computer up for his live shows and just push play and relax or is he just not interested anymore. A little disappointed with that. I really think that Sasha and Digweed need to reconvene and take back their top spots as groundbreaking djs. Oakenfold, in his own way, did this with great wall. Anyway, I digress. this is a solid release from bedrock and comes highly recommended. I have listened to this set betweeen 10-20 playings before reviewing it as always because I can't stand hearing how much a disc rocks when the reviewer hasn't yet listened to the whole thing. happy listening and rock the vote please :)

4 out of 5 stars Layered Sounds Indeed.......2004-03-26

Bedrock needs no introduction!

John Digweed compiles (does not mix) the first layer of this compilation. Although the mixing has been performed digitally, the arrangement of tracks is truly unique. Digweed has managed to create a natural flow of idyllic downtempo and ambient sounds that captivate the listener instantly. Shmuel Flash's "Chilling Moments", also appeared in Cattaneo's "South America" (only in a faster version) is a fantastic track and probably my favourite in this disc. The classic "Dust" by Pole Folder & CP is finely reworked. Actually, all tracks in the first layer are brilliant. Special mention goes to "Innerspace" by James Holden's Mainline project and "Walking On Fire" by Evolution. Superb tracks. 5/5

The second layer concentrates on the dancefloor anthems that Bedrock has released recently. The mixing has been executed seamlessly by Phil Thompson, who under his Moonface moniker, has produced great tracks included in Digweed's GU014 Hong Kong and Pappa's NuBreed. "All I Know" by Morgan Page is a sweet vocal anthem. Moving to the darker "Chutney" remixed by Phil Thompson himself the mix acquires a more techy feel to it. Only released a few months ago, "Tonite" with the vocals of Ursula Rucker is an engaging progressive tune... and the mix gets only better thereafter. Who can forget the awesome opening track from Digweed's GU006, "Imagine" by Fortunato & Montressor, tweaked here by Chris Fortier? The peak of this mix has to be the Steiger remix of "The Hunter". Thompson brings his mix to an end by dropping Steiger's eerie yet blissful "Postcard From The Edge" followed by the immaculate synths of "Emerald". 4/5
