Editorial Reviews

He's big Down Under, Dave Seaman. They like the man for his lack of pretension, his adventurous spirit, or perhaps just his far-ranging scope of styles, a repertoire that takes in everything from ethnic breakbeats to eerie, fractured house. At any rate, it's only right he should deliver a Global Underground mix that reflects his love affair with Aussie club culture. CD No. 1 highlights his subtle eclecticism, blending weird tribal dub and electronica into a steep incline of pounding techno. CD No. 2 hits the right note between the downbeat and the esoteric, weaving earnest but rich progressive house into the equation, each track stripped back to bare threads of melody and hypnotic military rhythm. Some are a tad listless, like the Chicken Lips mix of Infusion's "Star Water," but most, like FC Kahuna's old-school "Glitterball," say all you need to know about Seaman's roving eye for the party. --Paul Tierney

4 out of 5 stars Welcomed Changes For Some, But Unwelcomed by Many Others.......2007-06-25

This is Dave Seaman's third release for Global Underground, and hallmarks an undisbutable change in electronica genres, mixing and tempo as compared to both preceeding albums . An overwhelmingly and highly unwelcomed change for Hard Progressive trance purests and/or fans of his previous two Global Underground releases.

I think this is Seaman's best effort of the three (GU012:Buenos Aires being my least favorite). I love it when when he adds a little artistic spin to his sets. A taste of this occurs on the first half GU016:Cape Town disc 1.

Disc 1 is the more "artsy" (as a few unhappy reviewers put it) of the two. Included are ambiently mixed tracks with a slow and smooth progression in tempo. A tempo which doesn't reach the hard progressive trance norm.

The set in disc 2 is better suited as a live performance than a commerical release and is overly trippy sounding. No standout tracks in my opinion and unfortunately there are a couple of dud anthems mixed in.

Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars and Disc 2, 3/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Spacey.......2006-08-24

If you are looking for a hard trance album, this is not what you are looking for. The time is spent waiting for the set to pick up on the first album. If you don't like waiting, then this set is not for you. Try Seaman renaissance for a more standard trance album. But if you like spacey, slow tempo, ambient music, this album is a MUST buy. This is exactly what I've been looking for to tone it down a bit, but still have that slow techno beat in the background. There is even some chanting on here for those who like ambient middle eastern style.

2 out of 5 stars EEW!!.......2004-12-01

I am a huge Dave Seaman fan, and this one totally blows in my book. I was bored to tears! I suggest getting his Cape Town GU CD or one of his Rennaissance mixes. I am not a fan of this one. Am I not artsy enough? I wonder. I love CD's that give you that sadness after it is over and you just want to play it all over again, and the Melbourne disc makes me WISH it was over! Way overrated on this site, from an extremely underrated DJ.

2 out of 5 stars Some may like this sound, Seaman purists do not........2004-08-02

Gone are the slammin' hip trance sounds of Seaman's other 2 GU releases, and in comes a more housey, break beat style, tropical funk that I just don't care for. Anyone liking this style of house may be into this CD, but if you marveled at his past GU's like the solid Cape Town, you will be disappointed with this offering as I am. It's hard to believe he went with such a contrasting style from what he was use to playing. Not one for my collection.

5 out of 5 stars And now for something a lot different.......2003-09-17

OK, ok, I can see the reasoning behind some of criticism of this GU release. It is different, more mellow, and in many ways on a different tempo than many other GU sets. On the other hand, it is technically brilliant, an absolutely magical 2 hours of music, and I cannot seem to turn it off. I have been listening to this CD too and from work every day this week, and it never ceases to impress me, interest me, and suprise me. In short, Dave Seaman's set is more than a collection of songs, it is a trancy epic that never fails to brighten your day. BRILLIANT!!
