Most bands that come from Nashville wear cowboy hats write songs about punching their horses. No such problems with the Pink Spiders, who at an early age sound like they traded in their Oak Ridge Boys CDs for the complete back catalog of New York's mid-'90s garage rock revivalists, D-Generation. Like that group's breakthrough album, No Lunch, this disc was also produced by Ric Ocasek, the former Cars front man who has built a second career out of creating hits for guys that dress like his old band. Cue a fast and furious racket of skuzzy guitars, blasting power-pop drum fills and skinny-tie sound effects that turn up pleasantly stupid guilty pleasures like "Saturday Nite Riot" and "Little Razorblade." --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Good up and coming band!.......2007-01-03

The album is good and when I saw them warm up for Good Charlotte I was impressed with their stage presence.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-11-26

This album is fantastic if not perfect. I like the first track "Soft Smoke" which has great guitar playing at the beginning of the song. Wicked song. The second "Saturday Nite Riot" ain't as good as the first one but still good. My favorite songs on this cd are "Modern Swinger" a extremely catchy song and "Little Razorblade" a awesome track. I usually go for stuff like The Click Five and Mcfly but I do like the Pink Spiders too.

5 out of 5 stars Really Great.......2006-11-06

This is one of my favorite CD's I own. They have a ver unique type of music that I find very appealing. I would reccomend it to anyone who loves music!

4 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2006-11-03

wow i was pretty impressed by this cd i just heard one song kind of liked it so i got the cd and let me tell you it was worth it all the songs are pretty good so i would tell you to get this cd

5 out of 5 stars My New Obsession.......2006-08-27

I love this CD. It's soo amazing. I bought it the day it came out and listened to it a lot and then I bought a couple more CDs a couple weeks later, but I just kept coming back to this one. I can't even describe it's amazing-ness. It's like a combination of some retro influenced rock with modern touches. I also read an article on them in AP and they were so fabulously cocky (in a good way of course!) that you can't help but love them. I love every single song on the album! I'd do a rundown of the songs and rate them, but they'd all just be 10/10, so what's the point? I will tell you that my favorites are:
Modern Swinger
Still Three Shy
Pretend that this is Fiction
Little Razorblade

and EVERY other song!

Please buy this. You won't regret it.

Space offer lyrics and vocal delivery that recall Ray Davies in the prime days of The Kinks, and a musical churning that suggests they've listened to their Brit-pop antecedents and learned a thing or two. Words like catchy, witty, and literate all spring to mind. Of course, not everything is perfect here; in this case, it's the crooning of "Female of the Species," which raises an unfortunate image of Bill Murray as Nick Rails the lounge singer on "Saturday Night Live." That aside, this is a first-rate release. Miss it at your own peril. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars A crime this is out of print (for now).......2003-03-13

But its cheap used.

This is one of the best albums of the last decade...not a mild compliment. Somehow Cornershop got all the credit for this kind of quirky sampling and mixing it up. Space has an even better sense of humor...and are ready to totally pimp themselves out by doing a clubby goof-off song (Growler).

My cd is worn down to the level of wafer thin. A disc that separates the tasteful from the tasteless (or just those who think they have taste).

Obtain, utilize, and be fruitful.

4 out of 5 stars A lucious brit-pop altered state..........2001-05-10

This CD is a vacation to a weirder, hipper, darker world... one with tarantulas in the bathtub, peculiar neighbors, and freaky vibes that are given a soundtrack by Space. Similar to They Might Be Giants in this regard, you have to just sit back and take a trip into these guys minds and come back wondering where your luggage went. The lyrics give you a Zen release from reality, and the music is with you all the way, somehow making electronica, lounge, and brit-pop all a seamless part of the day-trip. Like Thomas Dolby or TMBG, Space takes convention and lulls you in with a slightly off-mainstream sound and then turns it all on its head. If you want to get away from it all for awhile, this is a must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Nice one, lads. However..........2001-03-17

Space's Spiders can be really great- Only if you have every other British 1990's classic (Radiohead, Blur, Suede, Pulp etceteras) & want a tad more of it. This is due to the fact that many of the tracks here were following the precise same blueprint of the aforementioned bands ("Me & You Vs. The World" & "Mister Psycho" could perfectly fit in Blur's The Great Escape, whilst the guitarriff on "Kill Me" sounds suspiciously similar to the one used on the Radiohead classic "My Iron Lung"). Regardless of that these three songs are really great, just as the grotesque "Neighbourhood", the exotic "Female Of The Species", the irresistible "Lovechild Of The Queen", the dancy "Growler" & the eerie, unlisted titletrack. Worth a listen, but don't expect anything pristine.

2 out of 5 stars A handful of good singles..........2000-09-28

"Neighbourhood" is a catchy song (very danceable), very vivid, but you definitely wouldn't want to live in a place like this! And you won't want to stay submerged in this album for too long. I am sure there are those who will disagree with me, and that is the power of personal opinion. We all have them. I just cannot get into this album. Apart from "Neighbourhood", the lush and charming "Female of the Species" (which has been treated to some overplay because of its inclusion on one of the Austin Powers' film soundtracks), and "You and Me versus the World" this album offers a lot of tired sameness and droning electronic parts. Personally I cannot listen to the whole album in one sitting because it grates on the nerves after a time.

5 out of 5 stars I love these guys.......2000-01-02

Well, how i heard of space was my dad was on the radio (a dj) and he brought the cd home to me when i was about seven years old, and i loved it! And now i am thirteen, and i still love it! The style of music (electronica-rock) mixed together is just awesome, and they also write some pretty catchy lerics, also i am a drummer, and i always look for good music to drum to, and this is one of the few that is just hard enough, but still easy and fun, i love space, rock out!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chocolate Watchband crossed with the MC5!.......2006-06-24

This is an absolutely essential compilation of first-rate garage rock. The Spiders completely avoided all of the cheesy aspects of the so-called garage rock revivalists, and instead simply stomped out basic loud rock & roll. The formula was to take the best elements of 60's garage rock and turn them up to eleven. The Nomads were doing almost the exact same thing at around the same time over in Sweden, which just goes to show you that great minds think alike!

4 out of 5 stars Garage Rock Galore.......2003-04-16

This is a lot more fun than today's current garage revivalists in that it is not trying to attain artistic pretensions. As well, it has a good sense of humor and punk rock spitefulness. Classic cuts like Slave Girl and Out of Control show a punk/garage rock hybrid that is quite palatable. More entertaining than Aussie Rock pioneers Radio Birdman though less challenging than the Birthday Party or my personal favorite, The Scientists it still holds up well today as a classic among neo-garage rock.

5 out of 5 stars Right In the Nuggets!.......2003-02-08

Jaw-dropping collection of ramped up Garage Rock that can only be the direct descendant of the bands featured on the classic 'Nuggets' collection.
Lime Spiders bust out old-school Garage style with twice the humor and three times the melodic sense. These are wickedly catchy jams with raw, searing guitar and oddball lyrics delivered with frenzied intensity. It's the real stuff.
If you dig the classic garage sound, or more modern rockers like Electric Frankenstein or the Hellacopters, this disc will hit you dead-on.

5 out of 5 stars Revival? What Revival?.......2003-02-04

If news of last year's overblown "garage rock" revival, which has already puttered out, ever reached Australian shores it was probably met with snickers since ragged louts like the Lime Spiders have never stopped believing in the beautiful, high-octane noise that guitars, bass, and drums can produce. This lovingly compiled collection of album tracks, rare B-sides, and EP cuts is a career retrospective of Oz's wildest band (no small claim) whose psychedelic, three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-dust attack is anchored by the arteries-bursting vocals of appropriately-monickered front man Mick Blood, who sings every song as if he's heard news of an H-bomb scheduled for down under tomorrow. There's no gristle in any of these songs, just plenty of red meat, snarling guitars, big drums and grit from a band whose singles, especially "Slave Girl," deserve the same recognition as those produced by the London and New York punk scenes. Play it at a Stroke or White Stripe today and watch them scurry for the safety of their MTV.

5 out of 5 stars garage rock 80s style.......2002-10-01

forget the strokes ,hives and the rest of the phonies , this is the real deal.aussie garage rock at its very best . think igy , ramones , and evey 60s garage band you can think of. this is really it.

5 out of 5 stars Piano Prince...and more!.......2007-03-26

The late James Carroll Booker III was a troubled man who lived a chaotic, painful life, and who played some of the most beautiful music ever. This all-instrumental cd of live recordings from the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans showcases Booker's solo piano playing in a wide variety of styles. He plays blues, ballads, funk, jazz, classical and pop tunes - as well as a few styles of his own - and it all fits into a concentrated whole. The music on this cd is really among the all-time best stuff ever to come out of New Orleans, which is saying a lot. Some songs are likely to have you up and jumping, while others may bring tears to your eyes. The passion and the spirit of this music can never be broken. It is
really the eternal blues. If just a smattering of this spirit survived Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans will sooner or later re-emerge as a center of musical life-force.

5 out of 5 stars And I though Joe Cocker had the best hands!.......2001-02-09

Goosebumps. Incredable artistry. I only wish I could fly from Oklahoma City to his next gig.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest New Orleans piano player........1998-11-08

This is Booker near the end of his career, playing in a dinky New Orleans bar and usually half out of his head. But the fingers still knew what they were doing, even on a piano that sounds as if it's strung with rubber bands. For an introduction to Booker's playing I'd recommend "New Orleans Piano Wizard," Booker in front of a huge audience playing a superb grand piano. But Booker freaks can't get enough of his playing, and I'm one of them.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......1998-08-06

Listen to "Piano Salad" and tell me how this guy plays this with only two hands? Definitely one of the finest piano players from New Orleans!

David Bowie's final concert as his most famous alter ego is one of the more legendary shows in the rock canon, but aficionados have frequently held this audio document, as recorded by Dylan/Monterey Pop documentary director D. A. Pennebaker, in somewhat low regard. Of course, the wonderful Ziggy Stardust album was such a pristine production that any live reproduction suffers in comparison, but fans may notice a significant improvement three decades later. Whether time has made the closer-to-garage-rock ethos of the live Spiders from Mars play better or whether it just sounds better is hard to say. But this 30th anniversary version does sound a whole lot better than all previous versions. Producer Terry Visconti has remastered what was once murk into something that sounds crisp and clear. The new packaging is lovely and the entire concert--incidental intro music and all--is documented for the first time. Pity the rights couldn't be re-secured to include Jeff Beck's long-deleted appearance on "Jean Genie," and Jacque Brel's "My Death" is still a tad melodramatic. But you also get most of the great Ziggy tunes, a few earlier classics, several from the then-unreleased Aladdin Sane, a terrific "All the Young Dudes," and perhaps the best cover ever of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat." --Bill Holdship

      Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Bowie in full flight........2006-03-09

"Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture Soundtrack" is a recording of the final live performance by David Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust' era band. Bowie had fully embraced the glam sound and his live performances carried an unnervingly high level of energy, and with a group more than capable of matching his intensity featuring guitarist Mick Ronson, this performance captured is enormously powerful.

Before I note anything else, it's important to mention that the sonic improvement of this reissue over all the other ones is staggering-- this has always been a great show that was not great to listen to, but through some arcane wizardry, it's been restored to really pristine sound-- it could have been recorded last month instead of over 30 years ago.

The music itself is about intensity and energy-- from the opening strains of a fierce and explosive "Watch that Man" to the closing "Rock n Roll Suicide". Along the way, Bowie manages distorted hard rock energy ("Ziggy Stardust", taken up in volume from the studio recording), sensitive and moody ("My Death"), and excitable ("Suffragette City") and a blazing take on "The Width of a Circle" with a seemingly endless bout of pyrotechnics from Ronson. This is an artist and a band in full flight, and it is an invaluable recording.

I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in Bowie's glam era, even if you've the previous issue of this recording. The sonic improvements are worth the cost alone. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2005-10-29

      Great CD

Possibly one of the best Live recordings ever.

      Both discs are fantastic.

      Worth the money

3 out of 5 stars Poor recording but high on the fun scale.......2005-05-18

Unfortunately, Tony Visconti had very little to work with when remixing this album. In particular, the ever-impressive piano parts sound muffled, as if only a faraway microphone covered by a pillow was picking up the sound. The liner notes explain the sound problems to an extent, but it still seems like a crime that this historic concert was recorded so badly.

Despite the technical problems, this album has many highlights, including a veeeeeery long Width of a Circle and the most moving rendition I've heard of My Death.

If you don't mind some DIY rough edges, you will find plenty to enjoy in the manic playing of the Spiders From Mars, and, of course, Bowie retiring Ziggy onstage is of no small significance.

4 out of 5 stars Vastly improved Visconti mix.......2003-06-09

If you are putting off buying this because you have heard previous versions (on vinyl or CD), wait no longer. This release features incredible sound in comparison to earlier versions. Thanks to Tony Visconti for cleaning things up so nicely.

This disc is worth having for The wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud/All the Young Dudes Medley alone.

A must for any Bowie fan! Only the continued absence of The Jean Genie featuring Jeff Beck keeps this from being a perfect Five.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular sound, great performance.......2003-04-14

This new mix of Bowie's legendary "farewell" concert in 1973 is in every way an improvement on the Rykodisc release. I originally owned the album on a two-record vinyl LP set, and for the first time, it sounds like a concert rather than a live recording. The balance between the ambient noise of the crowd and the performance is much more realistic, the bass and piano have more punch, the guitar is jackhammer solid, and Bowie's vocals sound better than ever.

In contrast to previous audio releases on vinyl and CD, this contains the soundtrack as presented in the film. The original 2-disc vinyl release, and subsequent CD reissues, not only have a mix that's markedly different from what you hear in the movie, but some of the performances are different. For example:

In the older issues, on "Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud" Bowie hits a spectacular high note on the last word ("free") and holds it for several seconds as the band segues into "All the Young Dudes". It's a spine tingling moment, one of the high points of the recording... but it's not here --- and it's not in the movie. Bowie sings an ordinary low note at the transition.

I saw the movie in a theater and again on VHS and laserdisc, and recently watched the new DVD release. I'd forgotten how strong these differences were! Some of them can be attributed to the difference in the mix, but others must have been taken from a previous performance.

This new mix is a dramatic improvement in every way; but I'm going to hang on to my old Ryko CD; I miss that high note. It
      really makes a difference!
