A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars the perfect movie.......2007-03-10

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-20

This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.

4 out of 5 stars musical memories.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Petula in the late fifties.......2003-05-25

Petula began her career as a singer-actress in the forties - more actress than singer, actually - but the decline of the British film industry caused her to focus more on singing. Her biggest musical influence back then was Peggy Lee, so anybody looking for songs like Downtown can ignore her fifties music.

This compilation is made up of Petula's first original album (the first twelve tracks here, all covers of Hollywood movie songs) and a lot of other tracks recorded in the fifties, plus one from 1961. Many of these additional songs are either from the Great American Songbook, or they are contemporary songs that carried on the tradition.

Very different from Petula's later music, this collection is likely to be of greatest interest to fans of the thirties and forties. Petula proves here that she could have been a big band singer - just listen to her version of Fascinating rhythm. She could swing with the best.

As time goes by, originally from the Broadway musical Everybody's welcome, was a top twenty American hit for both Rudy Vallee and Jacques Renard in 1931. Years later, it was included in the movie Casablanca, enabling Rudy to take the song to number one in 1943.

Of the other songs here, perhaps the most famous are Zing went the strings of my heart (Judy Garland), Memories are made of this (Dean Martin), but there are too many great songs here to mention in detail. If you are a fan of the thirties and forties, you will recognise your own favorites. If not, you should ignore this.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...

5 out of 5 stars beautiful old time music.......2004-07-13

there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Where It All Began!.......2003-04-18

To celebrate Madonna's 20th anniversary as the Queen of Pop, I have decided to try and review every Madonna single ever released. It'll be a long process, but I'll be very happy if I achieve it. I'm going to review them in order of their UK release, beginning with this - Holiday...

"Holiday" is perhaps one of the best known dance/pop party songs ever. The song has truly reached anthemic status, and charted at No.5 on VH1 UK's 100 Greatest Floorfillers. Released way back in January 1984, Holiday peaked at No.6 in the UK where it spent 11 weeks on the chart. The song has been re-issued twice in August 1985 and June 1991, peaking at No.2 and No.5 respectively.

Holiday is such a popular song because of its happy and trouble-free lyrics. The way the uptempo and light beat is arranged is instantly recognisable, and Madonna's vocals are totally unique to anything she has ever done before. The song begins with Madonna's proud statement "Holiday!" before going on to proclaim "Celebrate!" Simple yet effective, the song strikes a chord with every listener. The pure dizzy fun doesn't stop, as the song passes through many minutes without ever becoming boring. "If we took a holiday! Took some time to celebrate! Just one day out of life! It would be! It would be so nice!" croons Madge on one of the song's most famous verses. The repetition of lines never gets boring, and the rather long instrumentals between choruses and verses enhance the quality of the overall production factor.

Holiday is always a favourite amongst fans at Madonna's concerts. One has to witness her performance of it on her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour to truly appreciate the respect that this song has achieved. Make no mistake, this is a true classic.

4 out of 5 stars two good songs.......2001-10-20

Holiday was the jam back in the day.Lucky Star is cool but i prefer Holiday better overall.the production&vibe Reflects the time period really well.these tracks have held up still.

    3 out of 5 stars fine recording.......2001-12-21

The 1984 West End production of the classic SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was a very successful revival of a classic film which translated perfectly to the stage, and heading the cast was veteran musical performer Tommy Steele as Don Lockwood. It played at the London Palladium to packed houses.

The cast also featured Roy Castle as Cosmo Brown, Danielle Carson as Kathy Seldon and Sarah Payne as Lina Lamont. A fantastic ensemble was headed by Joyce Carpenter.

Danielle Carson brings the house down with the 'Valentine Girls' in "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", which replaced "All I Do Is Dream Of You". Ms Carson also gives a lovely treatment of "Would You?".

Tommy Steele proves his showmanship with "You Are My Lucky Star", "Singin' In The Rain", and "Fascinating Rhythm". Roy Castle is great in the comical "Make 'Em Laugh", while Sarah Payne is given time to shine in "Temptation".

    Overall a fine recording.

3 out of 5 stars Leave it to the Yanks, please...........2001-07-18

I've heard two London recordings of the classic Singin' in the Rain, and I have to say that they just don't translate well. In my opinion Gene Kelley made the recording and the movie. It's a musical about the Golden age of Hollywood, it just doesn't have anything outstandingly British about it. The actors give terrible American accents, and Make Em Laugh made me weep. It just isn't worth the money, kids. Stick to the OBCR.

    4 out of 5 stars MADONNA'S LUCKY STAR!.......2005-11-19

A true gem of the 80's and Madonna's career, Lucky Star is that simple ballad that rocked in its remix version. Flipsided by the remix version of "Borderline" this early Madonna track characterized the superstardom that would come in the next few months with the release of Like a Virgin!

Trivia: Lucky Star was written by Madonna on a yellow paper after she got a deal with Sire Records through her DJ friend Mark Kamins (who produced Everybody). Madonna was so happy that day that she dedicated Lucky Star to Mark Kamins. This was according to a Madonna book written by Andrew Morton.

    long live the queen!

5 out of 5 stars One of the happiest, most charming songs of all time.......2005-07-20

On paper, the lyrics look dumb. Madonna is no Whitney or Celine. The synthezer is SOOO 80s!
But, somehow, it all works. I love this song and I don't know why. Maybe it's Madonna star appeal or something. I don't know. But this is one of my favorite songs ever.

5 out of 5 stars Early Madonna Doesn't Get Much Better Than This!.......2003-04-19

Lucky Star was the second single Madonna released in the UK. It was the first of only five songs from her not to go Top 10 in the UK, when it charted at No.14 in the UK in March 1984 - just two months after the release of her debut single, Holiday. The song spent nine weeks on the chart, and was huge in the clubs. Despite it's rather unsuccessful performance in the charts, the song has slowly become a Madonna classic over time.

Lucky Star begins with an excellent beat that sounds like shimmering sunshine reflecting off sea water. This carries on in the background as the infectious and funky beat takes over and introduces us to Madonna's first line, "You must be my lucky star, 'cos you make the darkness seem so far." The lyrics aren't exactly genius, but they do serve as a pointer to what message the song puts across. It's a song filled with emotions on love and happiness, yet this does not show in Madonna's vocals. As good as they are, they are very laid-back...very Deborah Harry. The verses are very short and are followed up instantly by the chorus. The highlight of the song comes with the breakdown, where Madonna sings the lyrics, "Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight, 'cos I know you're gonna make everything alright!" The song carries on in its upbeat fashion, maintaining the funky tempo and trouble-free lyrics right until the end.

The video to Lucky Star is very plain and boring. Along with a white backdrop and several dancers, Madonna dances around in her iconic trashy gear that became the ultimate fashion statement of the early 80's. Overall, Lucky Star is, like every song released from her debut album, a Madonna classic which has aged well and stands the test of time.

3 out of 5 stars Lucky Star Remix.......2002-01-04

A-side: "Lucky Star" (U.S. Remix) (5:34)/B-side: "I Know It" (3:44). The A-side is also found on the newly remastered MADONNA album under the title of "New Mix". The song is similar to the original, however, it is a great item to add to your collection if you want a remix of "Lucky Star".
