5 out of 5 stars HEART BREAKING ELECTRONICS COME GOOD........2007-06-06

Don't buy this album, and expect an easy listen the first time you hear this, but give it time, because this truly is amazing stuff.
First track 'man from the anthill' starts off with a pulsating static throb, as khonnor's 'lost boy' vocals scitter in time with the ever growing number of electronic sounds. The track ends in a sky scrapping feedback, that sounds like your cd is broken... but in a good way.
From there 'daylight and delight' erupts with the simple acoustic strumming, and is soon joined by a huge swelling horn section. Have no doubts this album is loud and very swoony.
Every track on this album is fragile, and tortured. As the Observer newspaper remarked... 'it is the sound of undiluted heartache.'
Imagine my bloody valentine (yes them again..) jamming with kid A era radiohead, and you're sort of there.
Uncomfortable, beautiful and heart felt. This is a lost classic.
And if track 6 'kill2' doesn't make your heart shatter, then you don't have one.

    3 out of 5 stars Great Debut!.......2007-03-10

Khonnor became famous through soul-seek. That's the first I heard. Then I found out he was from Vermont. Then I found out he was seventeen. Then I found out he recorded this on a learn to speak japanese kit and a crud mic and some old pc. Then I heard the album. Now, I don't know if it was all a lie or this kids a genius with no friends. Ive yet to know how he made this on such seemingly nonesuch equipment, there are some very sophisticated electronic ramblings here, that compliment a sophmoric , sometimes mediocre guitar skill. his voice is chill, and calming, his lyrics can be a bit overbearing, but if you block them there are some very satisfying moments on this album, starting with 'Man from the Anthill', 'Dusty' and 'an ape is loose'. but other tracks dont stick as well, some just fall apart at the seams, but this doesn't mean leave it alone, because others tell me I've missed the boat and this is PURE genius. I just think it's a bit too long, but right when things get a bit too cuddly-feely he throws some wild electronic cut-paste shizzledazzle in the mix to make all dirty again. what I mean is: if this album was an acoustic singer songwriter I'd have incredible disdain for it, but I am utterly impressed by this kids skills at editing electronics. I don't know, but I think the learn japanese story is bunk, if it isn't, sorry khonnor, you really are a genius. now all youve gotta do is get out of your basement, get some friends, maybe a girlfriend, let her break your heart, and grow up with your writing skills.

4 out of 5 stars Some GREAT pop rock songs!.......2005-12-30

This is a pretty uneven album, but it contains some really great songs. The first two, "A Single Kiss" and "For This One", especially (with it's R.E.M./Ocean Blue-ish jangly guitars), are absolutely classic songs which unfortunately nobody has ever heard (even if they borrow heavily from those two bands). These two basically trump the rest of the tracks. After "For This One" is where things start to get uneven, but in no way are the other songs bad. The rest seems to leave the extreme catchiness of the first two tracks in favor of more generalized pop rock. It's not bad, but it doesn't always work as well as it probably could have - most of them have sections where the musicianship is interesting or the lyrics are good which helps the song even if the entire thing isn't that great. The singer, fortunately, also has a very pleasant voice which I think most people will love. Because a good number of the rest of the songs contain these interesting moments, and the fact that the first two songs are so great, I give this 4 stars. Recommended for jangle pop fans as well as the curious.

    Highlights include:

When this album was initially released in 1995, it was met with some skepticism; after all, the idea of an indie rocker (Rodan's Jason Noble) getting together with some classically trained pals (violist Christian Frederickson and pianist Rachel Grimes, another former rocker) and putting out an album of original classical compositions sounded like a bit of a stretch. It was--but not for the band. Recorded over the space of a few years with help from members of Shellac, the Cocktails, and various symphony orchestras, Handwriting is a remarkably cohesive, listenable, and interesting album--and if that sounds like anything short of a rave, it shouldn't. --Randy Silver

    5 out of 5 stars SORRY I'M LATE.......2005-04-08

"Handwriting" is an excellent record, especially considering that this is the first CD by Rachel's. Most of the music features ensemble playing, but no two tracks are completely similar. Instrumental line-ups change, sometimes radically. Some pieces, restricted to strings, have an intimate, chamber feel. Some begin with solo instruments. Another, with intrusions of drums, guitar and a lovely, fuzzy bass, develops a curious structure that oscillates between two musical worlds and does so without seeming either affected or odd for the sake of being odd. At the farthest extreme, "Full on Night" is a convincing and well-constructed soundscape /noise piece that is not simply an improvised collage: there's a coherent structural quality that comes across.

And perhaps that is the over-arching, organizing principle of this music. It's foolish to just say "somehow all this holds together." But, somehow all this holds together. In addition to the structural integrity, the writing and performing style favors understatement and restraint. These factors combine to provide a deep sense of coherence across a fairly broad range of compositional types. And don't let the word "restraint" imply that the music ever drags or dead-ends. Nor should it imply that the music is strictly minimalist, because it finds some rather nice flashes of expression, unerringly in the right place and always at the right time.

As for intimations of Penguin Cafe, well maybe. But probably not. Rachel's is clearly not in pursuit of the melodic, something at which Simon Jeffes excelled. There's a particularly well-developed sense of how things start and how things stop. And the music here is more inwardly directed, more concerned with the interaction of elements requiring somewhat longer development periods than PCO typically pursued. So, a better point of reference might be entry-level Gavin Bryars, because more often than not Rachel's comes down on the side of art music or good old "new music" than the more typically tuneful exhortations of ensembles that come bearing strings.

    4 out of 5 stars Creeping Moonlight.......2002-01-10

This album sounds like something you might find on the record player in a haunted mansion. It certainly does have beauty and brilliance within, but it is at times clunky and harsh. I like that. Handwriting is definitely Rachel's eeriest album, The Sea and the Bells is their most polished album, and Selenography is their most far-out. Egon Schiele is the album for hardcore fans, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone to just wants to waltz with the poltergeists in their heads. Stick to Handwriting for that.

5 out of 5 stars New Sound to "Classical".......2001-01-26

I don't know if Rachel's is considered classical music or not. The instruments are the traditional classical variety; however, there are elements of jazz, new age, rock, and who-knows-what throughout the album.

Southbound to Marion and Handwriting open and close the disc with a beautiful lyrical quality while M Daguerre has a strong jazz feel. Overall the album does not have a long play time with Full On Night, more of a wandering through noise than an actual "song", being quite lengthy.

In comparison to other Rachel's works, I can only compare it to Music for Egon Schiele and The Sea and The Bells. This one is less "classical" than Music for Egon Schiele, which I think is their best work I've heard. To me, Handwriting is on par with Sea and Bells, as it contains some odd samples and a few minutes of noise as opposed to music.

If you are looking for something different, try Rachel's. If you enjoy classical music, start with Music for Egon Schiele instead of Handwriting.

    4 out of 5 stars Handwriting.......2001-01-10

This is a very interesting album. While I've never been a huge fan of classical, this group makes me more interested. Although Rachel's is very classical in feel, it also has a sense of mystery, which I like. This makes it very hard for me to analyze this album. I will say that if you like godspeed you black emperor! you may enjoy this album. I am in no way comparing the two, but see bits of similarity. Check out the songs "m. daguerre" and "full on night". These are the two I enjoy the most. "full on night" actually does sound a bit like godspeed! with all the train samples.

5 out of 5 stars this happens to be in my CD player right now........1999-09-17

And it usually stays there along with "music for Egon Schiele" which I would consider to be the two best by Rachel's thus far, their newer albums being a little too sleek and calculated. (but still okay, I guess) The first album by the Rachel's, these sounds are strung together intricately and woven with attention to detail. This music is gritty and passionate, somewhat somber, beautiful, engaging, romantic. Ace!

khonnor handwriting is like that first time that your mother takes you down to your uncles house and finally tells you that hes actually your father.. When khonnor first hit the scene of the lower burke slums, it brought a new light and hope to the citizens. we knew that reform was coming, if a 17 yr old boy can make sounds like these than surely the bombing was over soon. it was almost as if enya had finally infiltrated the lower basque region of spain. and the true nature of human beings and their harmonious existence with father nature was finally complete. My boyfriend Diesel told me that it was like the lil kim first album with out the refrence to animal pornography. the thing about khonnor is that I once knew him. No seriously I know many of my fans out there are probably shaking their heads right now in disbelief. but we once shared some special moments together. oh khonnor why havent you called me. I thought you said the pill wasnt ready? it wasnt ready khonnor, we werent ready. I still carry the locket you gave me. so yeah khonnors music rocks lots of static, aaannnddd static is a good thing. Salt Lake city rules yeah. and julie if your out there lsitening I want you too listen up, its not my kid, so go look for someone else.

Face it, Khonnor is cool in a Fennesz and/or Boduf Songs meets The Postal Service and/or Dntel kind of way with the murmer of electronic noise overlaid with acoustic guitar. You must set aside or disregard that most great aspiring artists never start out having a clue. They are aware they have some home bred intangibles fighting and fussing inside just hankering to bust out. The lucky ones find a medium of expression to channel that creative spontaneity and hone a craft that nurtures their raw talent until some confidence builds and experience teaches. At this juncture, one can plot true courses, navigate the improbable, and figure how best to address their audience. The trick is to stay hungry, edgy, intuitive, and a few steps out of kilter.

Take our youthful lad Khonnor (Connor Kirby - Long) and his Handwriting CD, a remarkable achievement by any account for one of any age. You can easily find numerous faults and quibble the small points but none could doubt the talent. His knack for composition, diversity, and simplicity outshine any weakness due to naivety or lack of experience. He just flat out doesn't know better, but is willing to lay his guts on the line. Forget that some of the songs ride light on substance or content as he more than makes up for it in trail, risk, and experimentation. The fragmentation, electronic chatter, and background buzz are artist liberties. Lest we all be too old and forget, it's always the young ones who create the new sounds that structure the new underground scenes, ultimately affecting what we end up listening to as the `new cool'. Some of the more electronic material starts a tad grandiose in a cathedral sythn sort of way reminiscent of an early New Order when their song titles had nothing to do with the lyrics and we idolized them.

Locked in his bedroom with a funky mike, old computer, guitar, and Casio, this kid pulls off the equivalent of a modern day musical McGuiver meets Mozart. I find this music inventive, original, refreshing, eloquent, and flat out beautiful. Stuff that in what ever you smoke and toke it. These are some righteous sounds.

4 out of 5 stars a solid full length debut.......2005-11-30

If you've already had enough of youngsters named Connor making great indie music, then you should probably stop reading here. Having released his first EP of music at the ripe age of 15, one Connor Kirby-Long built up a small following from his website and subsequently started work on a follow-up. That release is Handwriting, and despite the super lo-fi (supposedly the release was recorded using only one beat-up microphone, a computer, and a single PC speaker) indietronic aesthetic, I have to admit that I'm won over.

Part of what's so intriguing about releases by younger artists (like the other Connor, Patrick Wolf, and others) is that they aren't afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. While it sometimes makes for either cringe-worthy lyrics or sonic experiments that just don't quite work, it often makes for a unique experience as well. Whereas established artists overthink things to death, sometimes younger ones simply let it roll and that exuberance carries some weight all by itself. Such is the case with Handwriting, a great little release that works in most places and is good enough in others to make you look over the mis-steps.

Drawing influences from Fennesz, David Sylvian, and even Jim O'Rourke, Handwriting is 13 tracks of fuzzed-out guitar-based electronic music that plays like it's filtered through colored glass. The opener of "Man From The Anthill" mixes beautiful washes with quiet vocals and twangs of guitars before the whole things is swallowed in a dense processed squall. "Daylight And Delight" lopes along with stuttering drums and more sheets of filtered guitars, sounding like a lost Flying Saucer Attack track while "Megan's Present" takes a more standard first half before exploding into a shimmering, beautiful second section that feels almost exuberant.

As mentioned above, the album gets a bit bogged-down in places, as on the *ahem* somewhat aptly titled "Crapstone," but completely redeems itself in plenty of others. "A Little Secret" pushes the noise boundaries a little more with squelched vocals and spluttering beats alongside gorgeous guitars and a nice piano melody while "The Stoned Night" again shows his great skill with layering warm textures. Handwriting is an excellent debut from an artist who is obviously quite talented. Here's hoping for more from him in the future.

Geeze Louise, how can this chunk of gold have escaped all attention by the american music consumers? Handwriting is full of super pretty sad electronical music. Imagine a melancolic 17-year old kid in a cemetary town making sad songs about screen love and space and stuff on the computer in his parents basement, and you pretty much get the picture. It's more heartfelt than pretentious and it speaks to your guts, but it's still skillful and intelligent as hell. Go buy it!

From the soft jingle at the start of opener 'A Single Kiss', as Bobby Wratten, bearly able to whisper "She's gone and no longer / thought she'd die without me", sets the tone for the album, to the monochord confessional of closer 'To Keep Your Heart Whole' ("I thought not breaking us in two / would be a simple thing to do"), there isn't a moment when the emotion lets up. The creaky minimalist electronica of 'What Can I Say To Change Your Heart' is utterly devastating, 'Abba On The Jukebox' is a mournful recollection of happier moments in numbing disbelief; 'Less Than Love' and 'Do People Ever?' are bleakly frank over the quietest of acoustic guitars. I could go on, but there's no need. It's no surprise that recording on this album was scrapped twice because Bobby couldn't bear to go through with such trauma. It's completely overwhelming. A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the import price.......2001-08-22

People who enjoyed TBS's more readily available "Broken By Whispers" should find great enjoyment in this earlier (and, in my opinion, vastly superior) recording. Not as noisy or erratic as "Whispers," this is an album full of jangly, mostly acoustic and immensely sad songs about breaking up, with a Britpop flair. Perfect company when your heart is in pieces - Trembling Blue Stars know exactly how you feel.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all hopeless romantics.......2001-04-16

It's hard not to love this album with lyrics like those in Nobody But You (I don't want to live without love / But I don't want to love / Nobody but you) and Do People Ever? (No, I never saw us winding up / Fighting one another / But then again / Do people ever?) If you've ever been broken hearted I'm sure you'll find a song on here to relate to.

        5 out of 5 stars Don't Fight The Feeling ! ! !.......2000-12-14

Though this album, produced by Willie Michell originally came out in '78, it has more of that early mid '70s Stax Jazzy / Memphis Soul feel. (It was released on Hi Records but recorded and mastered in Memphis, so the similarities obviously aren't totally coincidental.) The tracks are slick, but they bump hard. From the opening track you can really feel it. Like the divas of LaBelle (in their early incarnation, that is) Ann Peebles is NO "cute" singer. Well she may have been cute, but her music bumps... Some of the tunes kinda remind me of the love makin' music you'd hear on those old blaxploitation films. (Remember the soundtrack the Impressions did to "Three The Hard Way" ???) ...You know a sweet string section in the backround, but the Rhythm section would be bumping, and Bobby Womack, Joe Simon or Minnie Ripperton would be going on and on about a no good woman or this an that... Know what I mean ? - - In fact, if you like this album, check out some LeRoy Hudson or Willie Hutch while you're at it or the SON OF STAX compilations.

Just to correct things... contrary to the listing above (as of the time of this writing) there are 10 songs on the album (most about 3 or so minutes in length... you can tell the album was crafted for air play.) Tunes are : Old Man With Young Ideas, Bip Bm Thank You Mam, The Handwriting Is On The Wall, I Didn't Take Your Man, You've Got The Papers (I've Got the Man), Lookin' for a Lovin', Youre More Than I Can Stand, Livin In Lovin Out, If I Can't See Yo, Let Your Love Light Shine.

Great stuff... and you wonder where Macy G. got her groove...
