5 out of 5 stars Popularizing The Word "Fools"...Again.......2004-12-13

The word "fools" turns up in many of The Gin Blossoms' songs, namely "Until I Hear It From You", Until I Fall Away", and "I Can't Figure You Out".

Dusted offers some raw and unfinished versions of "Lost Horizons", "Hey, Jealousy" and the smash "Found Out About You". Other greats include "Girls Can't Wait" and "Kelly Richards".

A must have for the true Gin Blossoms fan!

4 out of 5 stars proto-Blossoms.......2004-01-11

The Gin Blossoms are often unfairly lumped in with the faceless crowd of 90s post-grunge bands, but this release, in particular, proves that there was something a bit more intriguing at work within these Arizonans' minds. Before they were pinning infectious, wondrously sung (Robin Wilson truly had one of the most distinctive vibratos of the 90s) pop gems, they were a blue-collar garage band vaguely resembling a slightly poppier installment of The Replacments, or perhaps a rough-and-tumble Byrds. Several later Blossoms classics ("Hey Jealousy," "Lost Horizons," "Found Out About You," etc.) are found here in there earliest, most primitive forms--if you listen to the versions here and then listen to their reworkings on "New Miserable Experience" you will be astonished at how slow the later versions sound. Philip Rhodes drums at a frentic pace, while Doug Hopkins (rest in peace) and Jesse Valenzuela pour on jiterry, jangly guitar lines beneath Robin Wilson's rough drinking voice (he sounds like an entirely different singer on this record). On a parting note, I must say that the fourth track, "Girls Can't Wait," is one of the absolute finest Gin Blossoms records, an astonishing, heartfelt tune that will leave immediate impressions.

4 out of 5 stars Gin Blossoms Raw and Rough.......2003-06-12

Sometimes raw and rough just means poor production or lousy musicianship. Not in this case. This early Gin Blossom disc is certainly less polished then New Miserable Experience (which contains 4 "Dusted" tracks) but it is raw and rough in a good way. To me, this cd has a much more country feel to it. Alt/Country that is. The guitars remind me alot of early Old 97's. One track, "I can't sleep" sounds like it could have belonged on the Long Ryders first record. I think if the band had gone in this direction rather than the sound of "Congradulations, I'm Sorry" then they would have been right in the Alt/Country discussion. If you like the Gin Blossoms and you are a fan of Alt/Country then pick it up. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Some rough edges, but overall good.......2002-10-16

I think this makes an excellent complement to the rest of the Blossom's work. If you love their 2 discs, consider this a supplement, sort of like rounding things out in a box set. Some gems here, some forgettable, but a great look at the band's beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Great Early Effort...........2002-10-03

First of all, let me start by saying, "if you are a Gin Blossoms fan you gotta have this one!!!". Sure, there's different, harder edgy versions of "found out about you" and "Hey Jealousy". But this album is full of gems, written when the band was hungry and before guitarist Douglas Hopkins spiral downward. Doug's sound and writing style is all over this album. If you like songs about old lovers, new lovers, one nighters, drinking, and the arizona heat, you'll love this one.

    Album Description

Dusted is collaboration between Faithless members Rollo and Mark Bates (keyboards). When We Were Young features a blend of different style and textures: downtempo club grooves, lithe grooves, uplifting atmospheric soundscapes. Those who liked Moby's Play should fall in love with this. This is an amazing release!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Moody, stylish, and engaging.......2006-09-06

This music has a bit more depth than you'll find in some of the current "designer music" downtempo stuff.

There's a nice mix of styles here and a lot of interesting instrumentation, even for a medium that is primarily electronic.

I'm looking forward to the next release...

5 out of 5 stars Pop this in on a Sunday.......2004-06-10

Nothing but a pleasing voyage into your inner child. I love CDs that can magically take to places. In this modern made fast paced world, it's easy for us to get lost in all the technology and concret around us. But it's the little jems like Dusted that can save us from ourselves. Don't pass this lil baby up, you won't regret it. Make sure to take a look at Faithless' new CD coming out soon "No Roots".

5 out of 5 stars An album - not just a collection of songs........2003-10-24

Unlike most dance/electronic music this is an album that is best played as a whole. Sit down, turn it up and actively listen to it. Its not boring. Its not formulaic. Its really very good.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible........2003-09-29

I must confess I often walk into a CD store with the intent of buying a CD or record that has the most unique and beautiful cover. This album fit the criterion, so I spent the money on it. I put it into my CD player not knowing what to find. A year later, it's one of my favorite CDs, and it is easily one that defies genre; the songs skip along the forest's path from jazz to dub to trance to downright avant-garde...the instrumentation is always dreamy and gushing with emotion of beauty and sadness. It is the only CD I have purchaced that truly lives up to its cover, and unearths the whimsy of childhood, the respect for family, the desolation of growing up, and the nostalgic dusting off of past memories.

I cannot recommend this CD enough. Its texture will take about three listens to sink in, but once it does, it is one of the most beautiful stories you will ever hear performed in song.

Highlights: Want U - Jazzy and great.
Always Remember pt 1: Beautiful child singer.
If I had a child: What an amazing song. Everything is perfect.

    Lowlights:
Under the Sun: Perhaps a bit too happy. It unfortunately comes off upon first listen as far too...preachy.

    5 out of 5 stars trippy fun.......2003-07-19

I had to get this because it was another faithless side project featuring Rollo. A great dreamy, trippy cd. The more I listen to it the deeper it seems to be. The cd glides along until you come to The Oscar Song, which is worth a chuckle, not sure why it is in there, but it really is funny. Some really wonderful goves on this cd, and well worth the money. Oh, yeah, and another thing, be kind to animals, don't eat them.....go vegan. PEACE!

    Product Description

Named after the ancient Buddhist temple in Singapore, Saiyuji concludes the CD trilogy begun with Disorient & The Reality Temples. It's nine tracks were meticulously recorded over a period of a year and a half. The foundations for each piece were created on vintage analog synthesizers. Later, as the melodies formed in the ether, the music was layered using contemporary sensibilities and dusted with a hint of worldbeat rhythms. The result is a work of subtle mystery bridging the gap between old and new school artistry. A labor of love and devotion, Saiyuji represents Richard Bone's most sophisticated work to date and also debuts his growing experimentation with ambient video. Two of which, "By Any Other Name" & "Improbable Earth," are included on the CD.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Old Tech meets New Tech - a joining of philosophies.......2005-11-03

Richard Bone's background is in a variety of musical genre which includes jazz, but he is all about electronica. And his discography is impressive, with some wonderful works of electronica soundscapes and impressionistic moods. His approach is one not unlike the beat poets of the 60s, following his own drummer, coming up with some very imaginative and substantial works.

This is the final installment in the three part work started with Disorient and continued with The Reality Temples. Like the previous works that connect with Oriental Mysteries and Western Philosophies, the name of this work Saiyuji is taken from a Buddhist temple in Singapore.

This CD contains nine tracks, for a total play time of about an hour. This disk also includes two videos of the tracks included. The individual compositions are built on actual analog synthesizers. He then creates "old technology meets new technology" in the works and overlays each composition with contemporary beats and world rhythms and instrumentation contrasting the analog synthesizer beats.

Highlights include "My Indelicate Star" which starts with the old, familiar analog synthesizer we remember from early synthesizer works; the structured rhythm of zero and one that we became familiar with from older master works. Added to this is the familiar sound of analog synthesizer "strings" playing wistfully against the beat. This is over layered with Richard Bone's spacey keyboard structures to create a very obvious blend of the older technology in harmony with the new. A very lovely work masterly crafted.

Also "Improbable Earth" which starts out with the now familiar bass zero-one synthesizer beat and moves into the piano melody. This piece is more defined by the zero-one beat than any other rhythm, as it floats on the border of space music, being defined rather than allowed to drift freely. A nice contrast is offered and it is very original in design.

The videos that are included "are from a continuing series of ambient visualization by Richard Bone". The one for By Any Other Name is a series of slow motion/stop action images of roses in bloom. The other included video is for the track called Improbable Earth. The website has a third video for Aquaville.

I always find Richard Bone's works to be original, very well structured and enjoyable to listen to. This CD does not fail in any of these categories. This is ambient at its most innovative. It can be played to be appreciated, yet it still maintains the ability to blend with the background creating a peaceful soundscape for your environment. It is always a pleasure to hear new creations from Richard Bone. mafoster

2 out of 5 stars Why change a good thing........2006-08-17

When i first heard the 2000 release i was hooked. This second 2005 release is nothing like the first. WAAAAY more like Dido. I myself favor the 2000 release. The 2000 release is a 5 out of 5. This is only a 2 out of 5. The two albums don't even sound alike.

    4 out of 5 stars Something Else!.......2006-01-30

I must admit that I bought this CD, only because I'm a big fan of Dido. I think she has a wonderful voice and writes great songs. I was well aware that this album as a whole would not be like Dido's two solo CD's, but I was hoping that a couple of tracks would come close.

Now, having listened to the CD several times, I would say that at least one song comes pretty close to Dido's own songs. The song "Time Takes Time" is a fine track, with Dido singing the first two verses. She can be heard on two more songs, but "Time Takes Time" is the standout.

It also may take time to really get into the music; at least it did for me.

The CD is much like soundtrack, with long instrumental passages. It is meant as a companion to a children's book of the same title, written by Dido's brother Rollo. Actually, I like the book better than the CD, but there are several fine moments on the CD as well.

Great sample of Leftfield, plus its got the ever so great Roots Manuva. If you like this track you should also try the Roots Manuva song "G.D.M.S.O.B." remixed by U.N.K.L.E. which is pretty dang good too. This is NOT Rap, but rather big breakbeat/leftfield style house...so don't get confused since some may thinks since it has Roots Manuva it would be hip-hop...

5 out of 5 stars For anyone fans of Faithless.......2001-05-18

When I heard "Always Remember to Respect Your Mother pt.1" on a compilation, it did not take me very long to fall in love with Rollo's side project Dusted. I was enrapt with the haunting and frail melodies of "Always Remember to Respect Your Mother pt.1". If you really want to compare Dusted with Rollo's main baby Faithless (one of my all time favorite bands), Dusted's music lays more into ambient than trip hop (like Faithless). But to be fair, Dusted and Faithless are totally different in their own right and should not be compared. If Dusted was to be compared to anyone it would be Delerium. Their music is more in tune with each other as far as haunting ambient music goes. The cd artwork is wonderful, reminds me of the children's story of "Where the Wild Things Roam" (or something similiar to that title). All in all, "When We Were Young" makes for an excellent appetizer for the ears while waiting for Faithless's third studio album.

You love Faithless? Then you sure know about Rolo, the man behind the music. Dusted is what people call: A side project. Don't misunderstand. "When we were young" is a true miracle. A concept album that works. Think 70's. Think big concept albums with keyboards and mythic stories. Twenty five years later Rolo tries the same concept only in a modern approach. The story is not told. You can imagine parts of it through the sleeve artwork and the track names. Then you are invited to a journey into sound. On the way you even get to meet choirboys. Anyway. This is getting too long. So let's just say: Rolo has created a perfect record. It's pretentious in a good way. It's beautiful. And if you are a chart kid please note that (now) famous sister Dido is here too.
