Editorial Reviews

Morgan Gerard, Peace Magazine, December 2004
"Of the theories on what makes a great song, Ivana might have just cracked the code"

Product Description
Released via her own label, Brown Recordings, Ivana's second album is a mix of soul, funk and broken-beat. A definite progression from her debut "Brown", this album features collaborations with King Britt, Dwele, James Posyer (Erykah Badu, Common), Dego (4Hero), Kaidi Tatham (Bugz in The Attic), Stuart Matthewman (Sade, Maxwell, Sweetback), Agile (Nas, Brassmunk) and Solitair (Kardinal Offishall, Choclair, Saukrates) among others.

3 out of 5 stars Corduroy Boogie - 3.5 stars.......2006-04-15

The positives about this album are that Ivanna wrote each song and played instruments on each as well AND the excellent musical production of each song. Even though I did not like a few tracks because of her weak/strained sounding vocals, the music and beats saved those songs from being just below mediocre to me.

Once again, thanks to Amazon for introducing me to this artist - her record was recommended after I'd purchased a similar artist.

The songs that stand out to me are: BREATHE INN, C-BOOGIE, SUPERSTAR, SHOULD I, DESERVE, & COOL DOWN - as mentioned earlier, all have excellent music, beats & production.

YOU'RE SO YOU, GOLDEN SEA & CAN WE - feature really pretty vocal performances by Ivanna as well as beautiful music

TORNA A CASA - although I don't understand a word, I'm assuming her featured vocalists are her Mom & Dad (?). Anyway this song was really beautiful because of the collaboration & the music again is excellent.

The songs remind me a little of Sade & Aya - really chill jazzy music. I'd actually recommend this disc over her debut which although pleasant, had no singles that really captured my attention unlike this one.

3 out of 5 stars Runs out of gas.......2005-01-05

As one of the other reviewers mentioned, this definitely isn't Brown, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can never fault an artist from going in a little bit of a different direction or finding another edge. This CD starts out with four very solid tracks, which is more than you can ask for from most albums. It would have been nice if she didn't keep repeating "Superstar...Superstar...Superstar" at the end of the fourth track (I get flashbacks of Saturday Night Live), but if that's the worst fault, she's doing okay.
It's right around the point of the aptly titled track, "Cool Down" that this CD does precisely that. There is a noticeable lack of substance to the remaining tracks, almost like some of them were put on there as an afterthought. I'm thinking that maybe at 14 tracks, this CD was a little too long, a little too ambitious. Maybe Ivana wanted to show she could really knock something out of the park on her own label, showing that she could do things her own way.
Overall, a solid sophomore solo album, but I wish she had cut down on some of the producers and maybe just used one, like King Britt. Maybe something to think about for the next album, which I have a feeling will pull everything together in a really tight package.

3 out of 5 stars Not Brown.......2004-09-30

Corduroy Boogie has a few highlights like Dancin' and Breathe Inn. I love Ivana Santilli's style and her voice, but I think she plays it safe with this set of recordings. There is an edge missing that is clearly demonstrated with the lead single Deserve. Although a great song, quite safe in my opinion. The songs that feature Italian or French lyrics come off as cheesy.

5 out of 5 stars Ivana Doesn't Disappoint!.......2004-08-24

I have liked Ivana since back in her Bass is Base days, bought her debut album as soon as it came out, and have since worn it out. Her new album is amazing, and I knew it would be, especially after seeing her performance in Vancouver this summer. Highlights - "Cooldown", "What Matters", "Deserve", and "Dancin'", but in reality, this whole album is awesome. Great summer music, and something that I will be listening to until her next album arrives (hopefully not in five years!) I love you Ivana, thanks for funkin' up my CD player!

5 out of 5 stars One heck of a groovy album.......2004-08-17

After anticipating Corduroy Boogie for many, many months it has finally been released! This definitely has a different sound than Ivana's previous album, Brown. That being said, the sound on this CD is definitely groovier and in fact, you might even be able to dance to some of the songs. I would even go as far as saying that some of the tunes sound a bit disco-like. Ivana worked with so many different (excellent) producers on this album and it shows. So if you want an upbeat, feel-good album then this album's the one for you!

3 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed.......2005-04-06

A little dissapointed. The album is good at the sametime it is fair enough to say that it is lacking somethings - i am not much of a reviewer but i'd say get the album and be a judge for yourself.

I heard Ivana's voice on the Sweetback Stage 2 album - She has got talent. maybe more of CB in the background if possible. Ivana's voice will sync right in with the right compositions :)

1 out of 5 stars Easy to get drum beats...........2004-11-03

Mediocre vocals - kinda sweet
marketing (her look) over rides music
Dope tracks
poor songwriting - not much development from 1st album
'trying' to be this UK viby - trip hop act but remains at Canadiana pop-try-hard.....

Check out Esthero for quality and revolutionary style and sound.
Check out Fiest for authenticity and talent
Check out Astrud for originality
Get the point?.....
