Sounds of OM, Vol. 1

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Om Records is best known for putting out compilations (1996's Mushroom Jazz and 1997's Deep Concentration are two of their best), but the San Francisco indie also maintains its own artists--such as Naked Music NYC and Terra Deva. These two acts perform the best three tracks on this collection, and they come in the opening three slots on the disc. A Terra Deva track sandwiched between two Naked Music NYC tracks is a crash course in Om Records house A&R--only sexy and deep sounds need apply. Jay Denes of Naked Music NYC is known for making beautiful, jazz-inspired house (using flute, African rhythms, and warm bass), and the three tracks he remixes here are reason enough to buy this collection. After such a deep-house intro, the mood changes to a more tech-house feel about a third of the way through. Remixes by Derrick Carter, Chris Simmonds, and Joshua pitch the collection up while changing the mood to rougher and bouncier--imagine house heads clashing with punks in a mosh pit. That's the sort of scene that comes to mind on "Simmonds Dub," an otherwise nameless track remixed by Simmonds that's hooked on a dark, gritty bass-drum thump. Other key tracks include Carter's "Red Nail Club Mix" and Hernan Santiago's "Hernan's Dub Revolution." The 15 tracks are a continuous mix by Om's DJ Fluid but are labeled only by their remix name. This could make shopping for the original tracks potentially difficult yet not entirely impossible--all these tracks were previously released on Om in one version or another. --L.V.R. Odiaga

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite house cds.......2000-12-28

I highly recommend this cd to anyone looking for a very well put together mix. Besides the selection of really delicious, smooth, soulfull yet hot and exciting tracks, what really makes this cd excel is the overall ride DJ Fluid takes you on. At first it's a bit relaxed and smooth but toward the end he's gradually increased the heat to a powerful and intense sound which he very craftily maintains and then rounds off at the end. I love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasing (but not great) collection of consistent house.......2000-05-20

This was a very nice surprise, considering I bought it purely off the recognition of the OM label. Well the label doesn't disappoint, compiling 15 tracks of cool California house in a continuos mix by DJ Fluid.

Probably the best way to describe this set is consistency; while there are only a few tracks that grab attention as obvious hits, the only song you are likely to skip is the second to last one. And who likes skipping tracks?

The first few tracks set the tempo, with a pleasant groove, scratchy beats, occasional vocals, even a flute (or is it a sax?) The first song to break out is "Dubtronic Mix" by Joshua, which is simply great; fading and reverbed vocals (and other voices) popping in and out, and a variety of other sounds sneaking in here and there. Joshua does it again a few minutes later with "Joshua's Mo Musique Mix," a modern slice of 70's disco complete with diva vocals that work. You'll go through a few respectable filler tracks in the middle, but with every title here at four minutes or less you won't mind. The last third of the album increases the pace, and adds a bit of sass (courtesy of the singing on three straight songs) and ending nicely with DJ Migs' tune. Now the 14th track is skippable,-the flute playing just doesn't work and the final song is "eh", but by then you've gotten your money's worth.

Get this if you want a solid hour of good house music, and don't mind choosing pleasantness over greatness.

2 out of 5 stars Not that smooth........2000-03-17

I bought this cd on after listening the samples above, wich I think was a mistake. Yes, the 3 first tracks are great, but the rest of the cd is quite boring with tracks that dont get my feet tapping. Not the Om-quality I expected.

3 out of 5 stars Great tunes, shame about the DJ.......2000-01-22

I have stacks of OM cd's and was looking forward to hearing some material that I may have missed on this label. And to that extent I was not disappointed, but that said the mixing on this album is absolutely appauling, DJ Fluid hang your head in shame. He obviously doesn't understand the music he's working with, trying to fit square pegs into round holes, some of the clashing of records is frankly embarrasing !, nothing short of bedroom mixing. But if you can ignore the mix, some of the tracks are the usual sublime OM material, still worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars House music...smooth and silky.......1999-08-04

This is a tasty CD. Lots of great basslines, jazzy touches and some serious soul sirens singing sweetly. First three tracks ARE worth the CD but there's so much more. House fans...this one comes a rap-tap-tappin' at your windowpane. Dig in...

Product Description

The Sacred Sounds series consists of recordings of sounds that release encoded metaphysical information, while being played. The listener and the environment are being harmonized on a very deep level, by resonating to the Sacred Sounds which not only retune the cells of the body, but also retune mind and soul. Effortless balance can be achieved without even paying attention to the music or the sound that carries it. One can feel the energy of the environment being completely transformed. THE OM SOUND consists of one continuous track of 59 minutes. Ideal for meditation, massage, healing, especially REIKI and sleep therapy, it has been used successfully by many teachers, masters and healers. The creation of THE OM SOUND is based on many teachings and secret knowledge that has not been available to mankind for thousands of years. But the Keepers of Sound from many cultures have kept this knowledge and information, which has been encoded in these recordings alive! over the centuries. Oral and written information, intuition and channeling, scientific studies, artistic and visionary creativity has been used to create a series of recordings that facilitates the ancient wisdom of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Classic hypnotic.......2006-05-21

One low base synth organ like chord held constant throughout the piece, with small variations in the background barely perceptible, almost subconscious. My non 'New Age Music' friends just stare at me blank and say "I could have done that with one finger!" It's the small variations in the background that hold it together. This is music that's always changing yet always the same. An interesting paradox that she has superbly mastered. If you just glance at it it's just a base chord, but if you listen closely, there's always things happening, so it never gets stale. Hypnotic music to meditate by. (Very hypnotic)
