Album Description

Drive-Thru Records' recording artist, Hidden In Plain View will release Resolution on July 24th, 2007. Resolution is the follow-up to 2005's Life In Dreaming and sadly, Resolution is the final release from this beloved New Jersey band. Resolution proves HIPV learned much from their time together by and through years of performing live. The album kicks off in grand HIPV style with Bendy possibly the best song by HIPV to date, catchy and charming as hell. The rest of the album charges with big rock numbers, like Like An Ocean and Heavy Breathing and slower paced but powerful songs like The Lake House. Touted as one of the greatest bands to emerge from the North Jersey music scene, HIPV couldn't have ended on higher note than Resolution. With Life In Dreaming and a self-titled EP, HIPV has a combined sales history of more than 86K records sold.

4 out of 5 stars A Shame This Had to End.......2007-07-24

After listening to "Resolution" I was sorry to hear that Hidden in Plain View had broken up. Hopefully it is not true, since this album shows just how much they have to offer. "Bendy" is one of the better rock songs I have heard all year. They turn up the guitars on "Like an Ocean" and "Heavy Breathing" more than ever before, but at times, they slow the pace down, particularly toward the end of the album. HIPV is just one of those bands that everyone should hear, and people rarely do. HIPV is on my list, along with NHOI, Better Luck Next Time, Round Three Fight, Lucky 7, Crash!, Melody Fall, Faber Drive, Stellar Kart, etc. that just are so good everyone should hear. And although many of these bands like HIPV will never get their big break, at least they went out on a very good note with "Resolution."

4 out of 5 stars The Tone King Strikes Again!.......2007-07-02

Andy Timmons is back with another album after the huge success of "That Was Then, This is Now" and he's not showing any signs of slowing down. Being a guitarist myself, I greatly admire everything about this genius from his technical prowess, to his great songwriting, to his unmistakable warm, powerful tone. "Resolution," while not as enjoyable as "That Was Then, This is Now," certainly has its moments of virtuoso-level guitar and songwriting technique.

The first track, "Deliver Us," certainly lets the listener know what kind of music he or she is in store for. The rockin' hook combined with the beautiful tone Andy has come to be known for really sets a great mood! The solo passage is also very tastefully done and I give Mr. Timmons credit for not going over the top by shredding the whole time; the man truly knows that phrasing and sequencing are the key to a great guitar solo.

With the title track, Andy shows us his roots in blues, very melodically so I might add. Not only does the guy have great scorching high gain electric tone but his softer bluesy tone is just to die for! The songwriting is again tremendous and very melodic; he puts so much emotion in his work.

Speaking of emotion, Andy displays a great deal of it in his ode to the 9/11 tragedy: "Gone." From the beginning of the song it is obvious to tell from the minor chords just how much emotion he will be putting forth; a hauntingly beautiful elegy.

Well, I hope I have helped convinced you to buy this album because it is really great and I promise you won't regret it. If you're a fan of great guitar tone and songwriting then you will enjoy this. It's not as good as his previous attempt, so if you haven't purchased that one yet I would highly reccomend getting "That Was Then, This is Now" before this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Instrumental Rock CD.......2007-05-03

As a fan of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, I bought this CD and think it is very good. Andy plays great melodic guitar and his tone and speed are great. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes rock guitar.

4 out of 5 stars straight-up rock instrumental album .......2007-02-15

The Good
"Deliver Us" focuses on melodic guitar runs and tight rhythms. "Ghost of You" starts of tame and subdued, but drives up the distortion at various intervals. There's nothing too complicated on "Resolution," just a simple down tempo progressive accented by organ tones. "Redemption" barrels along with lots of speed and energy, and displays some of Timmons' most technical and intricate abilities. "Lydia" is an emotional instrumental ballad. Emotions continue to remain somber on the moving track "Gone (9/11/01)." Timmons channels his Danger Danger days on the over-the-top rocker "Move On."

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Resolution is a straight-up rock instrumental album with plenty of guitar flash and flare, tight rhythms, and emotional ballad pieces.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLEY AWSOME.......2007-02-12

ANDY TIMMONS IS A GUITAR MASTER,HE HAS ALL THE ELEMENTS THAT ADD UP TO GREAT GUTARISTS OF ALL TIMES CATAGORY.WHEN HE ROCKS HE ROCKS WHEN HE HAS THE BLUES HE HAS THE BLUES,WHEN ITS HEAR WRENCHING HE MEANS IT.AND A HUGE FACTOR HIS TONES ARE ALWAYS IMMACULATE,IF YOU LOVE THE GUITAR LIKE ME,AND YOUR A TONE CHASER LIKE ME GET THIS CD RIGHT NOW,YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT FOR A MOMENT.

5 out of 5 stars Drown yourself in electric guitar virtuoso.......2007-02-05

I just recently had heard of Andy Timmons, and since I myself had grown up loving the styles and tones from the likes of Eric Johnson and Steve Vai, had to get this CD. The nice thing is that I think Timmons brings some diverse vision to the table when recording an album like this. Not since Eric Johnson have I heard a guitarist be able to blend rock riffs with blues and escalate it into a more sweeping, timeless feel rather than just impress me with how fast they can play the chromatic scale. A lot of these songs have a lot of soul in them but still retain an edge for any rocker to like. The changeups are great and overall I feel this album is one of the best "solo" guitar instrumentals that I've heard in some time.

I'll just quickly touch on some songs I enjoyed from this album. The album opens up with "Headed for the Ditch", a song that has its blues parts but ultimately has some really fast licks. "Deliver us" has a lot of that sound that I remember from Eric Johnson and uses a variety of tones that make the guitar truly sing to the listener. "Ghost of you" has a great groove to it and coupled with some rapid fretwork that hits a lot of high notes, the song dives down at times into a darker, swamp boogie feel. "Resolution" is an energized and magical track that is slow in its execution but still powerful on delivery.

If you are looking for an instrumental type album that is not just fifty minutes of a guy playing notes as fast as he can, then the Andy Timmons Band is where it is. There is enough diversity in sound and rhythm on this CD to have something for everyone to like. I am extremely impressed with Timmons work and look forward to listening to more of his music. Eleven tracks in all, Resolution is an astounding instrumental album.

5 out of 5 stars Trumpet come alive.......2007-02-22

I love this cd! Wynton makes his trumpet talk as if it were alive. The Seductress is a beautiful peice with just trumpet and piano. All I can say is that I never get tired of listening to this cd. I love the combo. of jazz and classical.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2005-09-30

I don't have a lot of music critic vocabulary but I am life long lover of music, studied intensely for most of my collegiate career and I can say that this collection of songs represents some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and elegant.......2002-12-22

This is music for an elegant Saturday night. The up-tempo numbers are relaxed and friendly; the ballads are pieces you'd want to have on hand for seducing someone. Marsalis' soulful, often muted trumpet sounds as good as always, and he's joined for perfectly thoughtful, understated piano accompaniment by father Ellis. A lovely gem of an album.

5 out of 5 stars Oh yea, what that guy from Holland said.......2002-03-09

Here I am; a middle aged white guy from Tennessee. I HATE jazz! Or so I thought. My favorite "easy listening" station played "Where or When" from this album and I knew I had to have it. Now, unlike the music fan from Holland, I wouldn't know a long note from a tinkling arpeggio; and I don't care. What I do know is that this album is absolutely beautiful. I listened to it 4 straight times when it first arrived...and it just gets smoother each time. Somehow, it doesn't seem fair to catagorize music like this into a genre. There is something here for almost everyone. If I had to pick one selection that would be my least favorite it would be "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues". Otherwise....everything is GOLD ! And now if anyone asks me if I like jazz, I can just say "yup, I shore do!"

5 out of 5 stars So sweet, so sublime.......2001-11-19

My wife and I have enjoyed a cassette of this recording for more than ten years. It has travelled many miles, going along in the car and shifting up and down the stairs from bedroom to living room. Just as I was getting worried that the dynamics were becoming rather flat, I find the CD!
The reason I love this CD is that it conveys the warm relationship Wynton has with his father, and the intimacy can be heard on every long note, every tinkling arpeggio. Unlike Wynton's many other works, in which virtiousity and speed appear to be most paramount, this date was quiet and laid back. The trumpet sings gently throughout, and the space it leaves is the space for lovers to nestle and cuddle.
It is a mark of masterly that these two musicians could be so economical and yet reach the listener with so much power and conviction.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

5 out of 5 stars SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

3 out of 5 stars Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

    Album Description

Resolution is the first new BODEANS album in eight years. It was worth the wait. An inspired collection of classically simple songs, Resolution proves that the BODEANS have lost none of their musical edge. From their early days as Rolling Stone's "Best New Band," to subsequent tours with U2, and their hit single "Closer to Free" (the theme song to TV's Party of Five), the BODEANS career has had many highlights. And Resolution marks yet another milestone in their storied journey as one of America's premier roots-rock bands.

3 out of 5 stars Face it folks -- it's a disappointment after the wait..........2006-02-12

Funny how time changes things. When the BoDeans released their last studio album, 'Blend', in 1996, it seemed like their weakest release to date. Now, in 2006, it stands up as one of their most refreshing, unpretentious, rock-solid albums, and it contains what may be their very best individual song ("Hurt By Love" - why the hell don't they play this classic more live ??).

After eight years since then, the guys remain one of the best live acts in rock 'n roll and I never miss 'em, but this album sounds tired and uninspired especially after the long wait. Sure, "If It Makes You" and "617" are great songs, but it seems like the legal hassles they were involved in of recent with their former manager (and which were a BIG reason why there was an eight year wait since 'Blend') have taken a toll on their creativity - at least temporarily. The slickness of the production seems to want to make up for the lack of inspiration of the material.

I still give it three stars because it's better than most releases out there, and Kurt and Sammy's voices are still magnificent, but I think it probably will remain only a mediocre album even over time. But here's hoping the guys regain their powers for the next release, and I think they probably will now that their private battles as a band are out of the way. Now go catch 'em live !

5 out of 5 stars Wowsers, so many fans that aren't from WI.......2005-10-23

First I want to say that I have been a fan of the BoDeans since the first. This new CD is great. I love the harmonies, the guitars, the dualities of voice between Sammy and Kurt.
Having grown up in Milwaukee and listening to the band at Summerfest I never thought that the BoDeans would have gotten to be so large until I was working at a ChiChis in Iowa with a BoDeans t-shirt and had a native Iowan ask me where I got the shirt (love & sex & hope & dreams) and what kind of fan was I? She was a big fan and I was shocked...SHOCKED that there was a fan base outside of Milwaukee.
If you are a fan of the BoDeans, thanks a lot, they deserve all the love that they can get.

    5 out of 5 stars a little too late?.......2005-09-20

I have been listening to the bodeans since i got my first bodeans' cd, home back in the late 80's. I have been hooked ever since. Their down to roots, americana rock blew me away and has continued to do so ever since that day. Nothing they have released has ever disappointed me, which includes, Resolution.

But 8 years? come on guys... you can't do that to your dedicated fans! I have become so used to home, blend, LHSD, go slow down, and all the rest, this new cd seems like an intrusion into my once familiar catalog. I am sure though the warm spot i hold in my heart for these guys will soon accept the new disc on the block.

I highly suggest this purchase, be prepared to be blown away, as always.

    3 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return.......2004-09-28

I've been a fan of the BoDeans since their first album and I remember upon my first listen of 'Black And White' I paused and repeated the 7th track, "Naked", about 30 times before proceeding to the next song. I just sat there for a couple hours listening to that one song over and over. The BoDeans have always had that affect on me. Sammy's vocals are mesmerizing and evoke emotion that almost no other artist can.

So naturally I've been looking forward to this new release. It begins with its' best track, "If It Makes You", a straight forward love song featuring Kurt's vocals and brilliant guitar playing. It also features that wonderful BoDeans production of layered guitar in the mode of the great Phil Spector. "If It Makes You" falls well short of the BoDeans best but it is a terrific song.

The other two high points are "Sleep" and "Nobody Loves Me" which both feature Kurt's screaming guitar over an otherwise typical Sammy accoustic ballad. These songs and a few others on the album offer quite a departure from the usual BoDeans sound. I also like "Slipping Into You", "Once In A While", "617" and "Crazy".

Unfortunately that is about all there is to like on 'Resolution'. The songwriting is pretty weak and Sammy's vocals have lost the power and passion they had on earlier records. This continues the trend that hurt the quality on their two mid 90s albums. All seven of the BoDeans studio albums are worth owning and each one includes at least two great songs but, like I suspect most their fans feel, their first three albums are the way to go for new listeners.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid Album.......2004-09-18

It's a solid album; actually, in all fairness it probably deserves a better compliment, but after their hiatus I would have expected more. It might just be me, but there's something missing that I cannot quite put my finger on. I don't regret the purchase and it's still better than anything you'll hear on commercial radio.

Hume was a for-profit man of arms during his day who moonlighted as a viol composer, and a fine musician he was. Savall gets the full measure of this music, inspired by a lifetime of study. If one wants a taste of life as seen through the optics of a mercenary during the Thirty Years War, you cannot do better than this disc. Heartily recommended.

4 out of 5 stars lyrical wizards deliver..........2006-07-25

Trilogy is Souls at their finest, delivering raw yet intelligent lyrics with the witty, throw back laden, hardcore infused yet spiritual lyrics the whole heiro crew is known for. If you haven't heard Souls before, check this album out, it is tight. The lyrics will blow you away. These cats are some of the dopest emcees in the biz and can deliver witty lyrics better than most. The beats, some of them are tight and really creative, and other are just standard. But overall a great CD, hip hop heads and lyricist wizard lovers will find this release enjoyable. As far as those who claim this album left a bad taste in their mouth, I cannot agree with that. This album is packed with lyrics that dazzle and will tantalize the ear drums. Pick it up, you'll see, and you'll enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars What's going on with some of yall.......2004-01-17

Ok. Some of yall said this lp left a bad taste in your mouth. Well this review'll give yall a bad taste in yours. If you can't recognize a sick ass album then yall need to find another genre. From hot lyrics to blazing beats, this has got it all. The Hiero crew fall off with their material until this.
My favorite tracks are Trilogy, Interrogation, Acupuncture, and Soundscience. Besides these there are some decent/nice tracks and few garbage tracks. I gave this a 5 cause of all the bad reviews.. Probably a 4 to 4.5. Grab this one.. If you're already here researching this, trust me, you'll love this Souls.

      1 out of 5 stars what happened?.......2001-12-26

first off, i would like to say that hieroglyphics are some of my favorite artists. so when i got this cd i was juiced on putting it into the stereo and hearing another amazing hieroglyphics cd. but unfortunately, thats not what i got. what i did get was a cd that sounded sold out and nothing like what i was hoping. its true that a good artist's cds should be different, but this is just too different. i didnt even finish most of the songs because i couldnt stand it. the one good song is #9, but the rest is all the same. it sounds like an attempt to get in the top ten on the billboard charts, not what i want to hear. so to anyone who is thinking about purchasing this album, im warning you that its not worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Trilogy: Expectation, Realization, Frustration.......2001-10-26

This CD left a bad taste in my mouth.
Trying to judge this CD on it's own merit, without thinking about 93 'TIL INFINITY, is like watching EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE without thinking of the first three STAR WARS movies. Or listening to THE LOVE MOVEMENT without thinking of the first three Tribe Called Quest albums.
Seven years after creating such an era-defining album, they come back with an album so full of thug and playa pandering attempts. Now even though they chased skins in their early work, this time it's accompanied by E-40/Too Short style production that does no fit them at all. For God's sake, there's even a track that sounds like Mannie Fresh hooked it up in a couple of minutes ("That Ain't Life"). Now aside from the weak attempts at Primo/Alchemist sample-chopping ("Danglin'") and the Evidence produced "Sound Science", the only song on the entire album that even remotely comes close to the 93 'TIL era is "Medication". And as tight as that song is, it's NOT worth your hard earned money.
When the Souls of Mischief came on the scene, they were considered an alternative to the O.G. thugged out hip-hop that was prevailant at the time. Now, with thugged out hip-hop at an all-time high, they sound no different from anyone else. And that is a slap in the face of a lot of Hiero fans that hung on for all those years.
There is a reason why they are your fans, guys.

      5 out of 5 stars Real Hip-Hop.......2001-09-19

For those of you who are familiar with the Hiero-crew, it should come as no surprise that this is an excellent cd. However, for those of you who aren't let me give a brief run down of why this cd is so good. First and foremost their lyrics and abitlity to flow, which is what originally attracted listeners to SOM and other Hiero members, is still well intact. Second, the beats on this album are quite a step above their other two albums. Combining their excellent lyrics and flow with the premium quality beats present on this cd make for one of my all time favorite hip-hop cd's. Some people say that the lyrics are tuned more towards the gangsta side of things but that is only on several songs. Don't let that in anyway disuade you from purchasing this album. It will probably be one of the best cd purchases you've made in quite some time
