Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
"Above all, Gigolo means not to show everything right away. Gigolo is much more subtle, hidden and modern." That's how Gigolo's head ego DJ Hell puts it, and it's as good an explanation as any as to why the German label has never failed to keep the underground's interest. From the moment California's God-forsaken governor/Kindergarten Cop sued the label for using his image for their logo, Gigolo has carved a singular path through all sorts of sounds, from the punishing techno of Jeff Mills to the kitsch of Tiga & Zyntherius' cheeky cover of Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night." The label definitely got caught up in all of the "electroclash" mayhem, but wisely sidestepped that mess to keep it clean. On CD One, Trevor Jackson plays himself on the funky "Pink Lunch," Richard Bartz trolls around old-school Midwestern house and techno while Pink Grease get their electro-punk on. Second CD highlights include one of LA's brightest lights, Mount Sims, doing his early-Prince-gone-new-wave histrionics on "No Yellow Lines," while Hell himself validates P. Diddy's hijacking of Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" (itself a hybrid) by remixing "Let's Get Ill," it's only saving grace being the presence of darling Kelis on the mic. Overall not the best look, but hey, Hell couldn't care less what we think.
Seriously, it's just really bad music, and I'm a fan of some funky, just-for-fun electro-vocal-oddities.
That's not what this album collects. It's just a bunch of poorly produced, humorless, hookless tracks.
Please don't buy it.
