Even the musical wasteland that was the '80s did offer up a few beacons of hope, and LA power-poppers the Plimsouls were one of them. Granted, they're primarily known for one song, "A Million Miles Away," one of the decade's musical highlights, but they had a lot more good material up their sleeve. "Shaky City," the title track, and "Play the Breaks," also stand out, and the quality never dips below wonderful. Led by Peter Case, they coulda been contenders; certainly their wiry pop music was appealing enough. For one reason or another, it never happened. But time has finally caught up with them (and that perfect song), and the world is finally ready for the Plimsouls. --Chris Nickson

time to break the surface.......2007-07-09
A recent double live bill of the Plimsouls and the English Beat re-introduced me to this band. The Plimsould with their strong power pop dominated set blew the Beat off the stage. The worst thing about the show was that due to label issues the Plimsouls could not sell any of their own material at the show. Anyway i soon went out and purchased this gem. At first listen it did sound a little dated and uneven, however i am very pleased to say that after repeated listens the strength of this album begins to stand out. Shaky City, the oldest story, How long, a milion miles, everywhere at once are true stand out tracks and a joy to listen to.
It's so very '80s...........2007-03-14
But it still rocks, with a solid set of good pop-influenced rock songs. I could probably stand never hearing "A Million Miles Away" again, but I really love the rest of it. It's kind of like if the Blues Brothers were a new wave act, but with Peter Case's great lyrics instead of goofy blues covers. One of the decade's best non-punk offerings, and certainly better than the bombast of Journey, etc., that was also dominating the airwaves then.
Plimsoles: Everywhere At Once.......2006-07-10
Had this on vinyl for forever- it's awesome to find it on CD for so cheap!
Worth owning but certainly not the best of the Plimsouls.......2005-12-24
First, I have to take offense at the remarks made in the Amazon "product Description" by Chris Nickson... I quote; "Even the musical wasteland that was the '80s did offer up a few beacons of hope". Chris Nickson is obviously a moron who knows nothing about "80's" music. The 80's were a powerhouse decade for music in many ways. What other decade was there in which you had hits by artists from the previous 3 decades right along side those by the "new" artists? Roy Orbison, Kinks, Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, George Harrison, etc. All had huge hits on the same charts as U2, Duran Duran, Go-Go's, Devo, Stray Cats, Romantics, R.E.M etc.
The wave of absolute crap unleashed in the 90's (a real musical wasteland) helped to kill the music industry and pushed the mainstream into a gutter it hasn't risen from since!
At any rate, Mr. Nickson is correct about this CD, it is a beacon of hope for power-pop in the 80's. It isn't as good as earlier plimsouls releases or even as good as the stuff peter released with "the nerves" but it's a very good album worth owning.

Great band, great CD!.......2005-10-30
I found out about the Plimsouls by watching Valley Girl. I really liked "A Million Miles Away" and the other songs featured in the movie, so I decided to buy the soundtrack. I just happened to come across this CD for $5.99 on Amazon and couldn't pass it up, even though I was planning to buy it anyway. I like all of the songs on this CD. I definitely recommend this CD whether you already like the Plimsouls or are just discovering them.

Modern country fulfills a real musical need. It offers songs about adult issues--relationships, employment, religion, and children--couched in the modern production values familiar to more recent generations. Artists such as Randy Travis, George Strait, Clint Black, and Vince Gill have proven time and time again that slick and down-home are not necessarily incompatible. For it to work, however, requires excellent songwriting and distinctive, emotionally evocative singing. Unfortunately, too much of Everywhere We Go, Chesney's fifth record, is second-rate material and paint-by-numbers arrangements sung with an emotional sameness that seems to make little distinction between the humor of "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and the romance of "You Had Me from Hello." For a moment, during "Baptism"--a duet with Randy Travis--Chesney invests some real emotion, and the restrained instruments seem in tune with the joyful yet serious subject matter. Then Travis comes in and demonstrates the vocal power and range that it takes to be the kind of artist that Chesney merely aspires to be. --Michael Ross

Life is good, the grass is green, the good Lord smilin'............2004-12-23
This is another of my favorite Kenny CD's. All the songs are awesome, the lyrics are fun, meaningful and sincere. I like when he incorporates the good "LORD" and "family" in some of his music. It shows he's got great values. Kenny is without a doubt one of the best in the industry. Some highlights for me on this album are "How forever feels" (where is this beach at?), "You had me from hello", "Life is good", "Baptism" (RT is awesome too), "Everywhere we go", "I might get over you", and the rest are just as great. She thinks my tractor's sexy is a very fun song. You have to have fun in your life in order for your life to be good. Life is short, live it to the fullest. GO KENNY!
LOVE IT.......2002-07-18
I am a huge Kenny Chesney fan and I must say I absolutely LOVE eveyrwhere we go. It has beautiful love songs and fun fast songs! Its AWESOME!
Another Winner.......2002-05-05
On Kenny Chesney's 1999 album EVERYWHERE WE GO, there is nothing groundbreaking or new, but Chesney provides his fans with the goods which has made his past albums a joy to listen to - good songs with meaning. The album opens on a high note with the torch ballad "What I Need To Do", which is one of my favorite KC songs. "How Forever Feels" is another irresistible summer song, with a catchy chorus and is sing-along worthy. "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" is a fun upbeat song, with a killer chorus, a humorous song indeed. "You Had Me From Hello" is a definate wedding song hit, echoes from his past hit "Me And You" or "When I Close My Eyes", but "Hello" is a beautiful song indeed. "Life Is Good" and "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" are both fun, upbeat inspiring numbers sure to lift your spirits. Other highlights include the title track, and "A Woman Knows". The only song I didn't particularily care for was "Baptism", the duet with Randy Travis. Overall EVERYWHERE WE GO is a consistent effort, and well worth repeated listens.
Kenny Chesney Shines.......2001-09-17
Kenny Chesney shows his diversity int his album. He sings heart felt ballads like "You had me from hello" and " What I need to do" to upbeat, turn up the radio and dance hits like "She thinks my tractors' sexy". Kenny shows true vocal range in his album cut "I might get over you". This CD and his greatest hits are staples for any collection. Easy to listen to, great to dance to, and a must have!!!
Original Songs?.......2001-08-19
This was my first CD by Kenny Chesney; which was purchased after seeing his video "How Forever Feels". I would probably be classified as the Contemporary Country music fan, so I don't keep up with country music scene. I do qualify with having 1 country station programmed into my car stereo.
This CD is Fun, Loving and leaves a breathing woman yearning for the man behind the songs to be standing in front of her (preferably, me). :) Though, it would be nice to hear more original songs by Kenny Chesney. I don't know if he typically writes his own songs or not; however I noticed he contributed to two songs on this CD.
Personally, I tend to enjoy music written by the artist--Leading to more appreciation of the song itself.
However, in no way should that perspective discount the fact that this is a great CD to have in your collection.
Kenny Chesney has a smoothe country tune, a boyish look about him and looks great in his t-shirt, blue jeans & cowboy hat!

McGraw is an artist that can spin a tale with only his soulful voice against a canvas of music. He starts his fourth record by painting a vivid picture of a simple, loving country life with "Where the Green Grass Grows," which gives the listener the same desire to live in that perfect place where less is so much more. The impassioned duet "It's Your Love" with wife Faith Hill will be one of country music's most requested love songs. Even in this day of the rehashed country sound, McGraw's haunting vocals boost the music: He has the ability to bring a tear to the eye and then sweep in with lighthearted rockers such as "Hard on The Ticker. --Paula Ghergia
Customer Reviews:
Could be the best..........2007-01-03
I seem to only review CDs that I believe are deserving of the coveted 5-star Amazon rating. This one, is not only a non-exception, but this one could very well be my favorite CD. Its hard to pick a favorite with Tim putting together so many good albums. Not to mention all the stuff Pearl Jam has released, but thats for different reviews. This disc is a great start to fifnish album. I love those. Lets start at the beginning. Where the Green Grass Grows is a great up-tempo song. It's deffinatly country, but the steel guitar falls a far second to the fiddle. The drumming is mixed more like a rock song, but that just helps push the tempo. The lyrics are great. Talking about getting out of the old town, and away from the city. To live out in the country, where the green grass grows.
For a Little While Is another good up-tempo song. It's a little more rock n roll than the first track. More piano driven, but thie fiddle and steel still own a big part in the song. The lyrics reflect on an old summer love. The kind that you know wont ever come back, but you'll never forget.
It's Your Love is the first Tim and Faith duet on one of Tim's CDs. There is no way that you cant tell these two are in love from the feeling of this great ballad. The organ that permiates the song is that of a 60's rock song, but there's no mistaking the great steel guitar solo in this one.
Aint That the Way That It Always Ends is a very up-tempo rocker about some of the people we meet in our lives that have textbook stories of love gone bad. The way the song is played and sang, it sounds happy, but you cant help but feel a little sorry for the people named within.
I Do But I Dont is a mid-tempo modern country tune about a man who is indecisive about a relationship. This one could be a non-standout track, except for the fact that its the only one like it on the disc. That in itself makes it stand out from the rest in its own way. Great Steel guitar in this one.
One of These Days. This one could be a tear-jerker. This is a soft ballad about a man reflecting on his past, and wanting to take back the bad things he's done. Wanting to be a better person. Realizing finnaly that in order to love others, one must learn to love himself. Beautiful song.
Hard on the Ticker is a honky-tonk style rocker talking about the girl who he might have once though could make him feel younger, but the effects are exactly opposite. Deffinatly a lead guitar and steel guitar driven song.
Everywhere. The album's name-sake for good reason. This song is mid-tempo, sort of Country-Rock. I could hear the Eagles doing this one. Simply about remebering a love that's been lost. Missing her, seeing her everywhere. Instrumentation is top-notch. Tim's Vocals have never owned a song like they do this one.
Just to See You Smile is a mostly acoustic folk - country song about running into the girl that used to love you, and remebering all the things you did for her, and realizing you'd still do them. Just to make her happy. This one was a huge hit for Tim, and once you hear it, you'll understand why.
You Just Get Better All The Time. This one is a very soft ballad. The man here is just proffessing his undying love to the woman he's with. This is one of those songs you could imagine a 70 year old man singing to his wife at their 50th anniversery. It's a very powerful love song.
You Turn Me On is another country rocker about the man who was ready to give up on the whole relationship thing until he met THE woman. He doesnt know what happened, but now all his plans have changed.
Over all, this CD is simply amazing. I've taken many a road trip where I made sure this disc was included in the pile. It's a must.
If you're reading this, you probably know Tim's music... This is no different. If you come into this album expecting to hear the typical great CD by Mr. McGraw, you'll get what you want and more.
You want this CD.......2006-03-14
Tim is again absolutely fabulous as always. Almost all of these songs were released and played on the radio. There is also a bonus track called "You turn me on". My favorite is "Just to see you smile". You'll be glad you added this one to your collection.
The first truly great CD by McGraw.......2005-10-16
Until "Everywhere", the only CD I could have recommended from McGraw as a solid CD and not just radio hits was his self-titled first, which ironically had no radio hits. However, McGraw bursts onto the scene with this one. From the timeless 'Where the Green Grass Grows' to the fun of 'Hard on the Ticker' and 'You Turn Me On', this is a truly solid CD. I appreciate an artist who can put together a good CD, and from this album on, McGraw does just that. This is a must for any country fan, but especially if you like McGraw.
The album that made Tim a really big star.......2005-05-17
Tim's career had built up momentum steadily. His first album made little impact. His second (Not a moment too soon) contained the single Indian outlaw. It sold extremely well and the next two albums (All I want) consolidated Tim's growing reputation. This album was something else again, propelling Tim's career to even greater heights. Tim began as a traditional country singer but by the time this album came along, he had moved firmly into the contemporary country music scene. You can't blame him as his debut album (a very traditional album) flopped. On the other hand, Tim's voice is country to the core so even when the backing is contemporary as on this album, there is still something of a country feel to the sound.
The album contains plenty of country hits including the title track, Where the green grass grows, For a little while, It's your love (with Faith Hill, otherwise known as Mrs McGraw) and Just to see you smile. As befitting a man at a blissfully happy time of life whose marriage was still fresh and exciting, the album is full of songs about the joys of life, particularly love. Among the tracks not already mentioned, I particularly like Hard on the ticker and I do but I don't.
This album is a masterpiece if contemporary country. Tim has had plenty of success with subsequent albums but I'll be surprised if he ever again matches the sheer brilliance of this album.
Everywhere.......2004-03-27
If NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON and ALL I WANT established him as a country hit maker, Tim McGraw's 1997 album EVERYWHERE propelled him into superstar status. The album had a number of huge hit singles. The first single, "It's Your Love", a duet with wife Faith Hill, became a country smash and hit #1 for 6 weeks. An impressive feat. Even more impressive was when the second single "Just To See You Smile" also hit #1 for 6 weeks in a row. The title track was another #1 hit as well. The album also spun off the hits "Where The Green Grass Grows", "For A While" and "One Of These Days". It's no wonder that the album was successful, as there's so many great songs here. Some notable tracks that weren't singles include "I Do But I Don't", and "Ain't That The Way It Always Ends". Overall another great album from Tim McGraw.

This is the version to buy.......2003-06-21
Already having a copy of the original album on cassette, I had my reservations about buying this CD. At any rate, I did--hoping the bonus cuts would be worth it. Well, folks, they are. Tracks 11-14 are live recordings from Texas, 1967, and the recordings are crisp and authentically LIVE (as opposed to the 1968 live album). The other live recordings of songs from the 1st album are from a San Francisco gig in 1966. Although these 1966 recordings aren't as well recorded as the previous tracks, the historical significance of the Elevators doing psychedelia in the Love Capitol at a time when the Airplane were still a Mamas and Papas throwback makes up for any minor lack of fidelity in the recording process. The instrumental "Levitation" is a studio workout. Last but not least, though, the final track, "I Don't Ever Want To Come Down," is a previously unreleased track from the "Bull" sessions that I'm glad I didn't miss out on.

Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, an eight-song EP from Modest Mouse, is a mellow affair. The release combines old tracks from Night on the Sun (an out-of-print vinyl-only EP), remixes, and outtakes from the The Moon and Antarctica sessions along with a couple new songs. "Willful Suspension of Disbelief" is a sedated intro that didn't make it onto Moon, but it sets the perfect tranquil mood to introduce this disc. Although the new track "You're the Good Things" builds intensity with quickening drumbeats and front man Isaac Brock's tension-filled vocals, most of the songs on this album float in a dreamier state. "The Air"--producer Brian Deck's remix of several Moon tracks collaged together--is a woozy instrumental jam that enters experimental, electronic territory. Brock gets sensitive on "So Much Beauty in Dirt," exclaiming that there's "so much beauty it could make you cry" over stripped-down guitars and subtle psychedelic effects. While Brock's distinct vocal and guitar style makes this most definitely a Modest Mouse product, Everywhere is a relaxed evolution for Modest Mouse, a drift down the indie-rock back roads, an Americana-meets-post-rock revisioning of their old sound. --Jennifer Maerz
Customer Reviews:
Greatest Modest Mouse Album.......2007-04-03
This is by far Modest Mouse's best album. It is hard for most people to understand at first. This album has a whole different feel to it than the rest of their albums. This was the first Modest Mouse album I ever heard, and I couldn't get into it and didn't want to at first. But a friend convinced me to sit through it 3 or 4 times, and now I can't get enough of it. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this album. Close your eyes and listen to it all the way through one or twice, and if you still don't like it, you have poor taste in music and you suck. If you love this album like I do, you'll also love the Ugly Casanova album titled Sharpen Your Teeth. Another great Modest Mouse album is The Fruit That Ate Itself.
best mm album.......2007-03-11
best modest mouse cd. i have all of them and this is the best one.
Three of their best songs.......2006-12-12
I love tracks six, seven and eight. They're among my top favorite Modest Mouse songs. But the rest of the album didn't do a darn thing for me. The album is definitely worth buying for the last three tracks, but don't expect much from the rest of it.
Well my Brother was right....again.......2005-10-29
somehow my little brother is capable of reading ppl and reccomending the perfect song to hook you to any band he thinks is pure genius. Once again all he had to reccomend is "so much beauty in dirt" and I was hooked. Now whether or not this is modest mouse's best doesn't matter to me, this is the cd that hooked me and will forever be my gateway to indie rock with such mastermindes as "The Weakerthans" which I highly reccomend to anyone who liked this album.
drink a beer and throw this on.......2005-05-30
this is my favortie modest mouse cd, first relized they existed when i heard "float on" which is a good catchy song but in no way reprasents their music. i quciky bought evertything they put out. they are original good humor, good lyrics though a lot is ridiculus. next to the "fruit that ate itself" this is a very short album, but worth it. track three sounds like they just got drunk and played a song. it is very good. the only reason this doesn't get five stars is because the last song isn't as good as the rest and track six is good but too f*cking short... this reveiw sucks but by the album.

"True conception, knowing why...".......2007-05-25
The 13th Floor Elevators' first album was a classic of early psychedelic garage rock, but this 1967 follow-up is, believe it or not, even better. Easter Everywhere shows the 'Vators venturing further into the psychedelic territory that they'd mapped out on their debut, augmenting the usual rock and roll formula with trippy lyrics and outta-this-world musical exploration. As other reviewers have pointed out, the Elevators weren't faking it; the band really did have a wonderfully whacked-out, LSD fueled vision for the future of rock, and they pursued it to the best of their abilities.
All of which could have made for a pretentious, dated mess of an album. Thankfully, however, the Elevators had the songwriting skills and musical gusto to back up their ambitions. Just listen to the brilliant "Slip Inside This House," which oppens the album like a strange, epic incantation, an endless wash of Roky Erickson's trippy lyrics and Stacy Sutherland's strange guitar chords drifting hazily over some heavy, hypnotic drumming from Danny Thomas. Of course, there's also Tommy Hall's ever-present "electric jug" playing, which sounds a bit like- okay, I don't know how to describe it. But it's weird and it fits. Moving on: aside from "Slip Inside this House," other all-out classics include "She Lives in a Time of Her Own" and "I've Got Levitation," two of the coolest psychedelic rock n roll pounders ever recorded. There's also "Pictures (Leave Your Body Behind)," which closes the album with a heavy, hypnotic groove, and "Nobody To Love," a dreamy warble of a pop song with a neat lead guitar line. There's also a surprisingly good cover of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and a slinking, creeping thing called "Slide Machine." "Dust" and "I Had to Tell You" are two oddly tender accoustic ballads. The latter, with Roky's haunting vocals and Stacy's folky guitar strum drifting lazily through space and time, is particularly effective.
So it all boils down to this: Easter Everywhere is an incredibly enjoyable release from one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Fans of 60s rock and roll (especially garage rock) will love this. Trip out.
**** Like a psychedelic brain hemorrage ****.......2006-11-06
This album is a little slice of disturbing garage/psychedelic Heaven ! It always leaves me with a melancholy Syd Barrett afterglow feeling for some reason ? Roky is yet another rock n' roll casualty and his vocal expressions on this record really convey his fragile mental state. His haunting singing forms a perfect marriage with the psychedelic lyrical content and that damn electric jug that Tommy keeps playing really knocks me off my square , but in a good way! It makes me sit up and really take notice for some reason ? " Slip Inside this House " is the album highlight for me , but the Dylan cover of " Baby Blue " and " She lives in a Time of her own " also really standout.I play this album late at night or on Sunday mornings alongside " White Light , White Heat " by the Velvet Underground and the cummulative effect is pretty unsetteling ,which I like ! .......Cheshire Cat grin from ear to ear !!!!
thirteeth floor elevators -- easter everywhere.......2006-11-03
rocks ! a must have for for all acid rock fans . some of the best.
Avoid this version of this recording! Buy the Spalax version instead!.......2006-06-17
This is terrible recording of one of the greatest Psychedelic LPs ever made. The Spalax import release from France costs a few dollars more, but it is much better sounding. Leland Rodgers, the owner of International Artists label and the original recordings, somehow lost them in the late 1970's, and so the so-called "Collectables" label uses these awful 5th or 6th generation no-EQ'd tapes for their masters on ALL of their Elevators releases. They sound like Hell. Avoid them. Spend a couple extra bucks and buy the Spalax releases instead, if you're at all a discerning consumer, or, if you can, find the (believe it or not) superior 8-track tape mixes available in the trading circles, those have been reEQ'd and are 2 generations away from the master reels.
Brings back memories of, ummm, things I did in college.......2006-05-25
This is absolutely my favorite 13th Floor Elevators album. It really knows how to push the right buttons. Tommy Hall and Roky Erickson did a splendid job of creating these songs and everyone in the band is a Texas superstar from yesteryear. I listen to this over and over again to this day. It influences my own music, by training me how to use sound to affect people in altered states. I can't thank this band enough for contributing to music the way they did. I just wish more people knew about them.

falls short.......2006-08-06
Sure I love the Beatles. And while I don't have much of an ear for classical, there is a lot I like. And I'm a sucker for rock music with real string sections. But this CD just doesn't hold my interest; it sounds like elevator classical. Who'd've thunk that one could make a string arrangement of Yesterday or Yellow Submarine that would bore me?
Perhaps if I could discern the "wittily chopped up [variations comparable to those] which Mozart and Beethoven wrote on the well-known songs of their own day," I'd like it more. But my wife (who plays in a local symphony, and does have an ear for classical motifs) also finds the songs uninspiring.
The only tracks which held my interest were Help and Can't Buy Me Love.
Ah, the beuty of the cello:.......2006-06-04
Okay, I have no idea why people are judging this based purely on lablings: quite frankly, it should be about the music, and nothing else.
Now, with that said, I have to say this is one of the most beutiful arrangements for a Band I've ever heard. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Phil have done a phenominal job at creating something amazing and new out of something amazing and old. I have to say that this is for any fan of the Beatles, classical music, and anything cello related. I'd deffinately suggest the buy, as the entire album is gorgeous.
Oh, and Cello Choirs are probobly the best string ensembles in existance (biased, yes: but that's okay, because cello deserves my bias)
Very well done.......2005-09-19
First of all, I LOVE the Beatles, and I LOVE Classical music. Personally I do not care how Amazon lists this CD.
That being said, I have played many arrangements of Beatles songs (mostly for string quartet) and they all leave something to be desired. These arrangements are bright, colorful and imaginative. Some of the songs have quite lengthy introductions that can have even the most devoted Beatles fan without liner notes in hand skipping forward to find out exactly what song they are listening to. I especially loved Norwegian Wood (I almost like it more than the real deal!). I have long been a fan of cello choirs, and for those who can't get enough cello this will be like a trip to heaven! If you like this CD, also try out the London Viola Sound
BEATLES IN CLASSICS.......2004-04-30
This is the title of a CD I have by the 12 Cellists Of The Berlin Philharmonic.Obviously the same one with a different sleeve.
Yet anyone who claims to know anything about the Beatles knows that "Lennon/McCartney" was agreed on at the beginning whoever wrote the song
You're missing the point...............2003-04-15
While I am sympathetic to the concerns of the other reviewers' issues with the song credits, with all due respoect to Beatlemanics, they can get a little carried away with Beatles trivia and forget that we're talking about MUSIC, something they neglected entirely. I found this CD to be filled with very creative arrangements, that were beautifully and flawlessly executed. This "Dandy Dozen" puts a spin on the Fab Four that takes them into a different dimension, artistically speaking, far from the dad-whistled muzak that another reviewer mistook it for. My only objection was that the recording quality was not the highest quality, and a little "noisy".

Album Description
Montana Skies creates a unique new sound with the unusual pairing of cello and fingerstyle guitar. Combining classic with modern, the group has created their own "new acoustic" sound with innovative original compositions and arrangements. As the group moves ahead, they continue to stretch the boundaries of contemporary instrumental music.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you Montana Skies.......2005-01-26
I downloaded the free MP3 of "Danza" to play in our middle school media center, to give us all a little relief from classical piano pieces playing in the background. :) "Danza" sounded so fresh and invigorating, that I downloaded all the MP3's offered by Montana Sky. I love the blend of classical guitar and cello. It is not easy to find well played, well recorded, classical music with a world flavor that is not distracting in a library setting--and also does not make everyone sleepy. There are Celtic and Latin sounding pieces here.
The guitar and cello both are recorded with a very full sound and are exquisitely mixed and mastered. A very nice surprise. I've put both CDs on my wish list at home for myself too.

Here, There and Everywhere: A different musical experience.......2006-02-25
This is a musical gem. Not showy or loud, this is not just another Beatle cover album! I unwind to this CD almost daily.
Possibly the best-ever arrangements of Beatles' songs.......2001-10-05
This may be the best-ever recording of arrangements of Beatles' songs. As previous reviewers have noted, other performers attempts at Beatles' songs are so often disasters.
[I don't include George Martin's In My Life with these, though.]
What makes this CD so successful is Sollscher's classical guitar expertise and the quality of the people writing the arrangements, which includes Toru Takemitsu, noted Japanese classical composer.
Five of the arrangements are by Sollscher himself.
Takemitsu's arrangement of the title track shows familiarity with the classical guitar medium, though it also features some exotic jazz chords. His other arrangements on the disk are Hey Jude, Michelle and Yesterday.
Without a doubt, the most interesting arrangements on the disk are the six by Borje Sandquist. His stray furthest from the original tunes, but do this in a musically satisfying way.
More Great Music from Goran Sollscher..........2001-08-16
This is Sollscher's first Beatles album, and DG released another last October. From Yesterday to Penny Lane has several new Beatles solos as well as the title suite by Brouwer. There are a few with Per Arne Glorvigen on Bandoneon. I love this version of I Want to Hold Your Hand. I hadn't realized that the original was in a minor key (it really is) and this rendition is fantastic.
The CD I have played most in the last four years.......1999-09-30
Brilliant classical playing, clear production and the variety of fresh arrangements are almost 'new' Beatles tunes. Jump at the start of 'Bathroom...' Listen for the 'first' time to 'I Me Mine' I hope you get the chance to enjoy it. Sadly, Gollscher did not lodge the arrangements at the DGG session, and I have only been able to track one published score -'And I love Her' - so simple, beautiful - yet playable! (Anyone who knows of other scores from this CD, please email !) His other CDs - more classical -are worth a listen, particularly if Brits wish a change from Williams and Bream, oops. Did I mention 'Georgia on My Mind' on 'Cavatina'CD ?
Sollscher arrangements & artistry compliment Beatles scores.......1999-04-25
So many musicians have tried their hand at the Beatles' music over the years. It has seemed to me that all of them have either created elevator music or awkwardly pretentious, pseudo-symphonic disasters. Enter Goran Sollscher who uses his impressive skills on the classical guitar to create a recording accessible to all tastes. Sollscher brings out a beauty in Lennon's and McCartney's scores that we haven't heard before. In more than a few of the tracks, Sollscher's arrangements are better than the originals. His style is smooth and melodious, very upbeat. His ability on the guitar is quite extraordinary. Sollscher's CD gives us the Beatles all over again.
