Ben Neill has been one of the more overlooked and adventurous exponents of electronica. In the four years since his challenging Goldbug album, he's been creating the edgy electronica music for Volkswagen commercials. In a reverse of the usual trend, Neill has taken those 30-second and one-minute jingles and expanded them into full-on compositions. Neill has a dark and aggressive approach to electronica grooves, with snarling bass lines and juggernaut percussion loops, that are nevertheless exhilarating. But what really sets him apart are the harmonic and melodic overlays he creates, mostly with his Mutant trumpet. It's a custom device with three trumpet bells, six valves, and a mini-trombone slide, but it also triggers synthesizers, samplers, and effects. Neill seamlessly orchestrates them into music that references Miles Davis and lounge music, urban jungle beats, and space music overdrive. I'll provide the perspective of a person who has not seen the commercials.

This album is genious. I know I'm going to love the pieces even more once I've seen the commercials, but judged on the music alone, this is a unique blending of sounds.

After listening to the album, I went back to Tower the next day and bought the last 31 copies that were left to give to my friends for for the Holidays.

A Catchy Expansion of Previous Gems.......2003-02-26

Anyone who is familiar with the Volkswagon commercials is aware of the catchy electronica that envelopes the viewer and aids the visuals. Well, Ben Neill was the guy who composed those, and for this album he takes some of those gems and extends them into entire pieces. Despite what you may think - that stretching a 30-second piece into a full-fledged song is overdoing it - it actually works well as it gives him more time to build up, strip down, and fool around with the sound a bit instead of just exploding within 30 seconds. An interesting and unique album not to be missed.

The Washington, D.C. indie rock noise pop trio Metropolitan is back with their third full-length release for Crank Automotive Records. "The Lines They Get Broken," the follow-up to 2002's "Down For You Is Up," continues the band's hypnotic mix of curving hooks, sliding chords, and raw basement energy. It was recorded by veteran Washington D.C. indie pop/rock producer Archie Moore, formerly of Velocity Girl, and also by Jason Caddell who spent years playing guitar for the Dismemberment Plan. "The Lines They Get Broken" mixes the same elements of garage, noise, and psychedelics that Metropolitan has become known for, as it maintains the same inspirations that "DFYIU" drew from such groups as Sonic Youth, Pavement, Television, Guided by Voices, and the Velvet Underground.

Cross-breeding minimalist droning, abstract electronic channeling, concrete machine-shop sampling and meditative improvisation, Mikroknytes are a brain-rearranging Washington, D.C. duo whose patient radar waves and aggressive sound blitzes are the results of years of sonic architectural research. Firing thought-lasers into the gaps between analog and digital, programming and spontaneity, and computers and instruments, Derek Morton (electronics, effects, mind control) and John Coursey (violin, electronics, idea manufacturing) sift massive mono-tones through a barbed-wire filter of cracked electronics and random codes, without ever breaking apart their eternal drone. Imagine Hrvatski if his dad was Tony Conrad, or Phill Niblock if he was quarterback of a football team made of Microstoria 12-inches.

Mikroknytes, the duo¹s follow-up to the self-released Spinus99, is a swriling, eye-lifting orb of organically processed sound. High-voltage power lines like "Sonerone" and "Sub_Tanner" reach infinity through gradual string-shifting and digital tone-stirring, while ear-punching hammer-jams like "Spam_and_Cram" toss electronic lightning bolts at resistors that insist on resisting. The album¹s centerpiece might be "Swite," a relapsing meditation that skis over nearly every possible sonic slalom, but the entirety of Mikroknytes is a hypnotic aural obstacle course made of half-chimes, near-beats, vibrating clicks, and super-drones.
