The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description
Van Buuren is one of the biggest names in dance music and the current #3 DJ in the world (as voted by a DJ Mag poll). He continually pushes the bar with fresh trance sounds. This is the next chapter in his annual mix album series; a two-disc continuous mix of this year's hottest trance tunes from a stellar lineup. Alongside Armin's superior mixing skills, "A State Of Trance" is an inspiring and uplifting aural experience.Customer Reviews:
we reviewed this album...........2007-07-27
Fantastic.......2007-07-25
I read some of the other reviews before I listened to the album. I agree that disc one, "On the Beach", is much more of a mellow trance; and of course, the name of the disc implies this. Most of the tracks are excellent--I just have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this time of trance.
I absolutely loved the second disc, "In the Club". The tracks are out of this world! I was listening to it during my boring commute and was loving it. Track 12 flipped on, and all of a sudden, the whole album just seemed a hundred times better to me. Tracks 12 through 16 make up my personal favorite trance mix I've ever been exposed to out of all of my favorite DJ's--Tiesto, Buuren, PVD, and Micro. This made me feel 100% secure in giving the entire album five stars!
Not as good as the previous state's of trance.......2007-07-22
Just buy it now!.......2007-07-20
On a serious note, I have listened to this set a zillion times. You will want to also if you buy this. Love it.
Armin at his best!!.......2007-07-20
I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of my fellow-reviewers who stated that this is Armin's best release yet. "A State of Trance 2006" was also very good, but Armin outdid himself this time.
I won't repeat the comments of former reviews, but I would add that I was surprised that no one referred (when pointing out their favorite tracks) to the amazing club hit "I Am" by Markus Schulz vs. Chakaa. I found it to be absolutely phenomenal and IMHO that track, not "Evergreen," marks the transition between the first and second half of CD2.
There was one track on CD1 that I didn't care for ("Wouldn't Change a Thing"); the vocals just didn't appeal to me. And on CD2 I considered tracks 6 & 7 ("Perspective" & "The Space We Are") to be fillers. Am I complaining? Far from it, for the other 25 tracks were sweet to the ear and will bring any trance fan (especially those who love vocal, melodic, and high energy trance) to a state of audio nirvana.
I believe this is, by far, the best 2 CD set released this year. But I have ordered the much-anticipated "Nightmusic, Vol. 2" by Thrillseekers, and if that release equals or surpasses Nightmusic, Vol. 1, it will give Armin some tough competition.

Killer.......2007-06-08
Armin breaks loose in 2006.......2007-02-14
Disc 1 (On The Beach) is a really great opening disc. Whether you find yourself rocking to and fro in a hammock or grooving enthusiastically in the sand & summer sun, this CD acts as a nice soundtrack. More atmospheric and spacey, Armin illustrates his grasp of the wheel when he proves himself able to incorporate some type of a pulse - sometimes surprisingly quick and hard - into this kind of "spaced" motif. In other words, On The Beach is not by any stretch of the imagination something ambient, and yet it is. The unobtrusive bpm simply propels the music, which takes the forefront, onward.
Disc 2 (At The Club) is where Armin has been known to shine; crazy, pulsating dance-floor-destroyer melodic trance comes pumping out of the speakers the minute the laser hits the disc. It doesn't become boring, and thankfully the vocals were really kept to a tolerable minimum in this mix. At The Club reminds me a lot of the frenetic, almost breakbeat melodic trance Armin dished out with his ASoT:2004, only this flows much better, linearly instead of jagged peaks and valleys. I loved ASoT:2004, but sometimes the lack of careful mixing or track placement makes it too hectic too enjoy - even on the dance floor, if you can believe that one.
I feel like Armin's been tinkering with stylistic techniques during the previous State of Trance mixes - 2004 & 2005. I loved both, but each went off in some undesirable direction at some point and never quite seemed able to return to base. Armin seems to have taken the warmer from 2004 and the cooler from 2005 and rightly combined them to produce 2006; highlighting his electronica capabilities with flying colors and putting forth a set in which BOTH discs are equally as desirable.
....No doubt this puts Armin back on the maps, even after releases like '76' temporarily took him off of my own. A great all-around CD to own, especially for Armin fans but also those of The Thrillseekers, Tiesto and Solarstone.

Back behind the decks after 2003's self-produced 76, Armin Van Buuren's 2-disc A State of Trance 2004 jumps back into giant thumps and epic dance textures. 76 had a relatively soft touch, in tune with the DJ's often-stated admiration for the music of Jean-Michel Jarre, but this mix is peak-heavy, designed to leave a dance floor light-headed and dreamy. Set loose with a crate full of wax once again, he lets the high end do the work, then judiciously drops massive beats to rattle your sub-woofers. Disc 1's "Signs From The Universe" uses the strategy especially well, with a swarming keyboard build that gets swallowed by a dark, rumbling rhythm. Van Buuren goes velvety smooth on disc 2, but doesn't forget the need for contrast; "Totally Fascinated" is darkly subterranean in parts, yet balanced by the song's sensual keyboard lift. While there's nothing groundbreaking here by any means, Van Buuren's approach makes for perfect sunny day music before nightfall brings out the heavier, more sinister spinners. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:
Turned me on to trance.......2007-05-29
You haven't lived until you've driven 15-20 miles over the speed limit on the freeway or a country backroad, at night, alone (passengers can ruin a good song with "conversation"), with all the windows open and with this CD at high volume.
Brilliant cd. It's in my top 3........2007-05-17
I didn't like ASOT 2006 and I just listened to ASOT 2005 and hated that one. 2005 must have been thrown together over a 3 day weekend or something.
Stand Out Tracks, What this album sound like.......2007-04-01
cd 2 is the same, the set doesn't pick up til Michael Burns' The Ambience, and flows right into Peter Martin's Perfect Wave, spine tingling ecstacy of a euphoric track, the track alone is why you should buy the album, it's the epitimy of how a good trance song should be. Oakenfold included this song in his Creamfields mix but it's more for the club mix doesn't come close to Armin's easy going and smooth buildup which was what Martin had in mind when producing this song. Then comes Mono's Rise another non vocal hit, this one will get you dancing,
ZRODN.......2007-01-08
ASOT 2004 is one of the great trance compilation of the 2004.......2006-05-20
The ASOT 2004 compilation received the award for the BEST COMPILATION CD for the 2004. This is a proove that the CD have a lot of quality. You just have to forget about commercial stuff you will do not find the same things of this CD. And be aware that the tracks have a style of DEEP TRANCE, and sometimes you dont know if the track have change or not, but this is real cool when you put the CD, seat down, relax, and let the trance takes you.

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew CorwineCustomer Reviews:
Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08
This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28
The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.
I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"
A letdown.......2000-06-23
Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.
Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars

Excellent for starters AND veterans alike. I've played this CD getting ready for parties AND falling asleep afterwards; it's very versatile with seamless mixes and long drawn-out suspenses.... just what trance is SUPPOSED to be, right? It's a well-spent $12 bucks and the songs are never "aged," meaning they continue to be desired month after month, year after year. The songs are NOT commercialized with #4 being especially satisfying and songs #9-14 having an amazing build-up with intense energy. Happy purchase:)

If you're looking for obscure stuff for the sake of obscurity, then this disc is not for you.
If you listen to music because of how it sounds (crazy concept, eh?) rather than whether other people like it, then this is a good trance compilation.
