Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

4 out of 5 stars Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15

This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10

This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!

But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!

Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31

When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26

The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.

2 out of 5 stars Wasn't That Funny.......2006-07-29

I gave this a good listen, but did not find it all that funny ... or memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

    Product Description

Road Kill Stew and Other News is a collaboration between the WAMMIE-award (Washington, DC's Grammies)winning Honky Tonk Confidential and CBS News chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer. Bob wrote the lyrics to four of the songs, including the hilarious "TV Anchorman," which he performs as a talking blues tune. HTC also wrote the music to Bob's "Hard Choices," a song of loss and longing from a woman's point of view; the rollicking rock tune "Little Lulu and Sister Hot Stuff," and "Long Shot Love," which is about a love that's lasted many years, despite the odds. The other songs on the CD are HTC s usual eclectic blend of hard core country, western swing, hillbilly boogie, and rockabilly. Diana Quinn sings the title cut, Road Kill Stew, a delicious, recipe with a swampy taste. Mike Woods sings the obscure Hangover Boogie, as well as the country classic Statue of a Fool. Mike also tears it up on the instrumental, Guitar Boogie. Diana and Lisa Ann Wright wrote A Girl Named Dick, which is a parody of Johnny Cash s A Boy Named Sue. Bob wraps it up with a cameo performance on a not-so-hidden track, a vintage recording that we unearthed from the vaults of WHTC, Momma s Cow.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

    5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

I can't understand the relative lack of interest in this great artist. Moving poetry, a huge lusty voice, superb musicianship--I keep coming back to this album over and over. These songs pick me up and take me along.

4 out of 5 stars GT goes off!.......2001-06-20

With "Road Kill" GT exhibits his eclecticism for the great benefit of those who listen up. Breakbeat, stripped back techno, Electro-punk...this album is another great 2000 release by an Australian electronic act. Well known for his dj'ing, GT has produced an album which is eminently groovable while being harder than your typical dance release. The 'Sunshine Song' is a great example (IMHO) of re-working an old standard. My only major beef with the record is that it didn't include a longer mix of 'Losing Ground', a song which i really like.

4 out of 5 stars You Can't See, Seriously You Can't.........2000-12-07

This is such an awsome recording, its bloody hard to find here in Australia, took me weeks to find the cd, and everyone i know who has this album loves it. The best song on the album hands down is 'You Can't See' Killer beet and Kool Keith dose some of his best ever rap. And Once you've seen the music video you'll love it more. Its a must get.

    4 out of 5 stars Rockin disc.......2000-11-30

I have heard a few of the tracks off this album while listening to triplej on the net. "You can't see" has the funkiest bassline and string sample and is my favourite so far. I am going to get this disc imported as soon as my next pay check comes in.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2000-11-29

This is a great example of how electro-pop can blend seamlessly together to form a perfect mix of beat driven electronica and groovy tunes. I can sit here for hours listening to this CD and it never fails to put a smile on my face. "Here comes another one" and "One more time (Sunshine Song)" are two fine examples of GT's happening music, combining catchy lyrics and carefully crafted tunee... I say go get it and see for yourself...

    5 out of 5 stars Cordelia's Dad - Road Kill.......2005-07-03

With the release of "road kill", their fifth album, Cordelia's Dad exorcise the folk-rock spectre that has haunted them since the beginning of their career. Simply because this spectacular trio has drawn upon the richly snaggle-toothed ballads of Appalachia and New England as source material, it has been nigh on impossible for writers to describe them without referring to the "f" word. Rather than operating in a folk tradition, however, Cordelia's Dad have always taken their material on loud rides into the eye of the pulsing unknown. Their best work has always been draped in feedback and propelled toward an indistinct future. And "road kill" represents some of their very best work, consisting of entirely self-penned work and presenting the band's loudest and least traditional-based outing yet.

If you're interested in hearing what they used to be like, their first two studio albums are scheduled for reissue around the time this comes out. "road kill" does not look back. It takes songs that share connective tissue with the best that misery-based "trad" songwriting has to offer, and shoots them out of a cannon. Distortion, feedback, exhausting propulsion and bad attitude are all elements that surface on "road kill". It presents Cordelia's Dad in a raw state that may surprise some people who know them only by reputation. For those more fully conversant with their work, this is a natural extension of the band's most recent recordings and live shows.

Recorded live on stages across the United States, "road kill" presents Cordelia's Dad at their most trad-destructive. Their essential core is unchanged. Their songs are still concerned with love and death and disease and tragedy and death and love. But the brutal vector that the band follows through their material makes it obvious that their most applicable tag now reads: post-punk psychedelic power trio. The voltage on "road kill" is at a level that was only hinted at at the end of Cordelia's Dad's last album, "Comet". If they continue at this pace it will only be a matter of moments before the wags start writing things like, "They make Nirvana sound like goddamn Peter, Paul &Mary". Perhaps John Peel said it best when he was recently queried about Cordelia's Dad by a British "f" magazine concerning their peers. "Richard Thompson my black ass," spat the legendary disc jockey. "Cordelia's Dad are the real Husker Du".

1 out of 5 stars Do not get this inferior version!.......2006-02-19

This is a shocking CD, all-too-clearly lifted direct from an LP and absolutely riddled with clicks and pops. Horrible. Avoid like the plague. I can't imagine anyone reviewing such a dire disc positively unless they were trying to sell one.
The version on Silva Screen label is the only one worth having, but it now seems to sell at crazy high prices.
The music itself is excellent and I only hope Silva re-release it sometime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music that stands on its own.......2003-05-29

If you've seen "The Long Good Friday," you know the value of Francis Monkman's music in the film's overall success-- its propulsive beats move the story along and act as an enriching element. The brilliant opening and closing themes, with their glitzy sax sound, echo the flash of Harold Shand's crime organization, all sheen and flash on the outside, but raw and violent on the inside. The **** film features a **** soundtrack, and it can be listened to time and again (I just put it on again for the 100th time last week-- still sounds fresh.) Warning: one track is a reggae song featuring vocals by Bob Hoskins; those without strong stomachs should avoid. All else is sterling-- buy it.

I had the fortune to see these guys play on October 9th in Canoga Park. Their live show was outstanding the music was soulful, tight, powerful, funky and lots of fun. On stage the sound was so good you might have thought you were in a studio.

If you like that great rock sound well delivered you should buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD I've purchased in a long time........2004-06-18

I purchase a lot of CD and most of the time there's only two to four songs on the whole CD that good. I find my self only listing to those tracks and skipping through the rest. I think this CD is one of those you could listen to the entire CD over and Over again, something that hasn't happened with record releases in a long time.
