Album Description

Doyle Lawson stands as one of the prime architects of modern bluegrass, with his career now spanning four decades. In addition to his achievements as an arranger, mandolin player, vocalist, and bandleader, Lawson is best known for infinitely widening the bluegrass gospel repertoire while ingeniously applying the rigorous precision of gospel harmony to secular songs. In the process, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver have been recognized with four consecutive Vocal Group of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. For his Rounder Records debut, Lawson has assembled a stellar collection that highlights the continuing evolution of his unique vision. Joined by Jamie Dailey (guitar, vocals), Barry Scott (bass, vocals), Jesse Stockman (fiddle), and Terry Baucom (banjo, vocals), Lawson expertly weaves together elements of bluegrass, country, and gospel into a sound only definable as that of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.......2005-09-24

If you have any affection for bluegrass you'll love this.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry ... Not One of DL&Q's best.......2005-08-09

I really enjoy Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, especially their gospel music. This is their first release for Rounder Records. I suspect the content and flow of this album represents a strong influence by the record company and not the usual freedom which Doyle Lawson has had in the past to pick the song lineup. Perhaps they were just trying to "break the mold" so to speak and stay away from heavy gospel content. I'm not sure where that came from, but to me it causes this release to come across as forced and mechanical rather than natural and flowing.

Don't get me wrong, the musicianship and especially the vocals are top notch, but for me this does not make up for the material selected for this release. Go back and listen to some of the soulful and sincere music from their previous releases and then compare it to this album.

I will be going back to listen to Rock My Soul and the older DL&Q material and You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper will probably be a very infrequent visitor in my CD player. If this is how DL&Q is going to be with Rounder, then in my opinion we would all have been better off without that relationship.

4 out of 5 stars Tight, upbeat bluegrass.......2005-05-29

Bluegrass legend surrounded by up-and-coming talents - check. Tight, multipart harmonies - check. Hot acoustic picking - check. To those who don't actively follow bluegrass, it's difficult to discern the differences between one top-notch band and another. What truly distinguishes Lawson's combo is the use of gospel quartet singing within the bluegrass framework. Though he and his accompanists can sing high-lonesome two-parts, it's the sustained chordal notes, such as the acapella tag to "Four Walls" that will send shivers down your spine.

Lawson's fine mandolin and guitar playing are displayed throughout, and having passed the banjo to rejoining bandmate Terry Baucom, the band strikes a balance that keeps the extraordinary vocals front and center. Highlights include the train-whistle lost-love harmonies of "Heartbreak Number Nine," the title-cut's whimsical, folksy style, and the album's sole instrumental, "Rosine" (which is sure to have them dancing at summer festivals!). It's all put together so smoothly, that casual listeners might not catch the incredible heart and craft laid into this recording.

5 out of 5 stars "Lawson weaves all the elements of bluegrass into his sound".......2005-04-27

Rounder Records presents their debut album with this label "You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper", featuring Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver...with Doyle Lawson on guitar/mandolin/vocals, Terry Baucom on banjo/vocals, Barry Scott on bass/vocals, Glen Duncan on fiddle, Jamie Dailey on guitar/rhythm guitar/vocals...a mixture of freshman and seniors (veterans) in the world of bluegrass...remincient of a barn dance with blends of tugging at your heartstrings...Lawson and his Quicksilver comrades deliver every note with a gospel edge to each tune they tackle.

Entire album is pure bluegrass from start to end...with the following tunes alphabetically and composer to boot:

BLUES FOR MY DARLING (Thomas Glenn Fletcher)
FOUR WALLS (Marvin Moore/George Campbell)
GIRL FROM WEST VIRGINIA (Clyde Denny/Marie Denny/Wade Hill)
GIRL IN THE VALLEY (Jamie Dailey)
HEARTBREAK NUMBER NINE (Barry Scott/Jamie Dailey)
LOVE ME AS YOU'D LOVE THE RAIN (Pete Goble/Leroy Drumm)
OAK VALLEY GIRL (Robert Gateley/Petr Vacek)
ROSINE (Doyle Lawson)
SAVING GRACE (Jerry Salley/Aaron Wilborn)
WHAT AIN'T TO BE, JUST MIGHT HAPPEN (Porter Wagoner)
WHEN I'M KNEE DEEP IN BLUEGRASS (Pete Goble)
YOU GOTTA DIG A LITTLE DEEPER (Carl H. Caldwell)

Pure vocalizing with high tenor harmony ringing in your ears...Lawson's mandolin solos are simply one of a kind, he is the best...one can only hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Rounder Records, Lawson and Quicksilver...Doyle Lawson played on Gibson "Lawson Signature Model" Mandolin, Terry Baucom played on Gibson "Terry Baucom Model" Banjo...they use D'Addarlo Strings exclusively...now this is the way bluegrass should sound...and O Brother this is just the way we like 'em!

Album Description

2002 debut album for up & coming MC who's worked with So Solid Crew & Sticky on the hit single, 'Booo!'. Produced in the UK and in Jamaica, who ever oversaw the project has certainly treated it with due care and attention. Producer Salamm Remi's work with the likes of The Fugees was both credible and inspired whilst dancehall king Dave Kelly is behind some of J.A.'s most enduring rude boy stylings. Both are on board here. Plus, there's also a fair sweep of pop nuggets on show with tracks like 'Now You Want My Love' and 'Dyna-Mi-Tee' profiling the kind of mercurial radio-friendly compositions that will seduce anyone with a soul. This international version features 15 tracks including, 'Anyway U Want It' feat. Keon Bryce, 'Seed Will Grow' feat. Kymani Marley & the hit single, 'It Takes More' (Bloodshy main mix).

3 out of 5 stars not bad but not excellent.......2003-02-10

I was a little dissappointed when I listened to this album. Knowing that it won the Mercury Prize, a prize given to some of my favorites like Portishead and Tricky, I expected a really groundbreaking album. I was let down. While Ms. Dynamite is a cut above the average pop female singer/songwriters out right now, this album is a little overrated. I thought that she had a lot of good things to say but the delivery after a while got VERY boring. There are only two tracks on this album that I thought were really good and the rest is average monotonous R&B from a mediocre vocalist.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive Stuff.......2002-12-17

In the U.K. Ms Dynamite is nothing short of a superstar. Having won numerous awards, the Mercury Music Prize being one of her best achievements to date. Her music exudes class in every area, from the lilting Trip-Hop melodies in "Dy-Na-Mi-Te" to the Garage inspired beat of "Put Him Out" her music will leave you breathless. This is one of the best British artists in a very long time, rising head and shoulders above a British music scene saturated with the instant popstars created from infamous television shows such as "Pop Idol". Numerous artists appear alongside her including among them Kymani Marley. Her lyrics are fierce and empowering, showing the world what real girl power is. All together this will be remember as one of the great recordings of 2002, appealing to people from all walks of life and is truely a great cross-over record. I see many great things for this young lady in the future. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars well deserved Mercury-winning debut........2002-12-08

Before you get this CD, check her debut appearance on the charts on Sticky's 2001 tune "Booo!" That'll give you a sense of Ms. Dynamite's natural verbal artillery and ferocity. This 2002 debut was pretty remarkable for a year when UK garage made more inroads in the US (e.g. Daniel Bedingfield, The Streets), but believe me, one listen to this CD and it's pure London. The horns and beats on the my name is track "Dy Na Mi Tee" brings up imagery like getting your teeth knocked out by the drunken sot by the Camden Town tube stop, while the tight single "Put Him Out" does TLC's '99 "No Scrubs" all ragga style. Her vocal style is somewhere between Lady Saw and Kelly Rowland, but it's the match with each track's rhythm, whether it's syncopated or more drawn out, that makes this CD a genius purchase. Rumors of duets with Eminem & Robbie speak to how much other artists rate her work. She even beat out the Doves for a Mercury!

It's not surprising that London, England's Ms. Dynamite--Niomi McLean-Daley to her mum--snagged 2002's prestigious Mercury Prize, and a couple of Brits Awards, too. U.K. artists have yet to distinguish themselves as a force in hip-hop, so when a disc the caliber of A Little Deeper emerges, especially from a conscious female emcee with a voice as smooth as glass and a cocksure swagger that's palpable, it's noticed. Ms Dynamite's love of roots reggae is in evidence throughout--especially in the island grooves of "Seed Will Grow," featuring Kymani Marley --but detours into cinematic sounds and funk also power the proceedings. "It Takes More," presented here as the "Bloodshy Main Mix," juxtaposes faux Left Bank accordions against a hip-swiveling percussion, resulting in an incredibly catchy number that could be subtitled "Amelie of Brooklyn." "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee," its staccato groove draped over Ms. Dynamite's silken come-hither rap, is a deserved hit. Singing and rhyming in about equal measure, Ms. Dynamite manages to at once condemn (loser lovers in "Put Him Out;" poverty and oppression in "Brother") and celebrate (togetherness in "Seed Will Grow" and "All I Ever"). Comparisons to Ashanti and Lauryn Hill point to Ms. Dynamite's place in the urban cosmos, but the crisp, elegant stylings on A Little Deeper are her own. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Insperational!.......2006-05-11

I'm a life long GUNS N' ROSES fan, because Guns N' Roses, if you may or may not know anything about them... they're basically a band that ROCKED THE WORLD because of their ability to... express themselves and what was happening in Los Angeles in the 1980's... and as artists, Guns N' Roses just grew n' grew n' grew as... they did THEY'RE OWN THING!, which everybody needed, instead of "another hair brained hair metal band", those guys just did they're thing, wrote about their life's ect... and, In all honesty, MS. DYNAMITE! has done exactly the same!
oh my god! she is basically... to me... In my own opinion (as a musician artist myself)... SHE HAS DONE THIS!.. and it is music like THIS!, that I can personally and all honestly, so easily call her "MY OWN INFLUENCE!"... and I'm usually picky about stuff like that, SLASH's Guitar ability (Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver ect...) Axl Roses's lyrics, when he's "Casting his own demons out"... in a matter of words, the rawness that made Guns N' Roses such a great band to listen to, for anyone wanting more than the clich? popular tracks that radio plays because 'it's suddenly cool that month...' for anybody wanting MORE than that, more from every clich? Ms. Dynamite track, if you are looking for an artist with a way of 'putting across the truth' such as 'GUNS N' ROSES' and even 'TUPAC!'... Ms. Dynamite is clearly, to me, as a musician myself... Her music can hit home! It can hit home on that 'deeper level, that, it really is no surprise, that this artist who wrote all these songs herself, it's so easy to believe, that she also had the GENIUS to call this DEEP/ HOME HITTING album... "ALITTLE DEEPER!"

I recommend her as a musician as I would Recommend The Following!

GUNS N' ROSES
TUPAC
JIMI HENDRIX
and of course... MS. DYNAMITE!

(She HAS to be on this list, for me!)
because, these are all artists, who, did their thing, for the LOVE of doing, but also... people who saw "what was missing on the music scene, but, created something to fill n' hit the spot, like what Ms. Dynamite almost always does, especially in this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars UK Lauren Hill.......2006-01-10

Ms. Dynamites album, A Little Deeper was a fresh burst of good music with excellent arranging and meaningful lyrics. She makes you feel her words. She comes from a poetry and underground music background and you can hear the rawness in her album. I love every single song on this album it is a must buy- she engulfs R&B, hip-hop and reggae. I promise you will be pleased.

2 out of 5 stars honest.......2005-09-16

I only hear one good track on this album. She's okay and could be better. She tries to sound deep but whatever. I don't believe her. She was a hit and disappeared cause she got pregnant. When is she coming back? Maybe never.

5 out of 5 stars feelin that natural high.......2004-08-30

positive and uplifting, this cd does not fail.ms dynamite creates her own signature sound with her distinctive voice, flow and all together sound.the best part of owning this cd is introducing this great artist to others who are not familar with her (unfortunately many are still not)her music is very truthful and very aware.

4 out of 5 stars Great vibe.......2004-06-10

Ms Dynamite definitely has talent, she demonstrates it on this album, which is quite satisfying from start to finish. It's too bad she doesn't really showcase her ability as a Garage MC (except maybe on "Put him out") because I really liked her work on "Boo" or "Envy" with So Solid Crew.
That said, this is a solid effort, with conscientious and genuine lyrics. Standout tracks are "dy-na-mi-tee" (laid back track, so addictive), "it takes more" (great message, catchy hook and chorus), "Seed will grow" (duet with Kymani Marley, there again great message, great beat, great collaboration) and "Now u want my love" (the best song to me, GREAT song). Other tracks worth mentioning are "Put him out", "Sick and Tired" and "Krazy Krush". References to Lauryn Hill are correct but I think she definitely has her own style.
You should try it, it has great potential.

5 out of 5 stars Ms Dynamite is DA BEST!!.......2003-06-07

This CD is my absolute favorite! I bought it the day after it came out March 11 and i've been listening to it alot and i still havent got sick of it! Every single song is great! And Ms.dynamite is no artificial star either. She writes all her own songs and u can hera how the lyrics reflect first hand experiences. Every song is different. "It takes more" is like a rap song then u've got "a seed will grow" with a reggae beat and "brother" which is a beautiful ballad. There is a song for everyone! I also recently discovered that on the clean CD after the song "a little deeper" ends there is a 2minute pause and a new rap song starts! Its great! Ms . Dynamite herself is also a great person. She does charity and she's pretty and cool yet she not a tramp like some of those other music stars. She's blown up in Britain and she was on "teen peoples hottest stars under 25 and now she going to blow upin the US for sure!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Album.......2003-03-15

This album is no less than Amazing. None...yeah I said it NONE of these songs disappoint. Every last song on "A Little Deeper" is filled with DIVA-esque lyrics, style, sass, and most important SOUL! All of the songs rank as a B- to A+ (The only song I would rank as a B- is "Ramp" because it doesn't quite fit the rest of the album...everything else (with the exception of "Anyway U Want It" which is a B+) is ranked from A- to A+)

Stand Out Tracks (in no particular order) are:

"Afraid 2 Fly"
"Brother"
"Put Him Out"
"It Takes More"
"Krazy Krush"
"Dy-na-mi-tee"
"Sick 'N' Tired"
"Gotta Let You Know"

5 out of 5 stars Ms Dynamite will blow you away !!!.......2003-03-12

I sincerely hope that this talented, beautiful young artist blows up like "Dynamite" here in the US. I first heard about her from a link on the AOL Instant Messenger splash page where they featured her video for the single "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee". I was feelin' her on the first few beats, and then when she started singing/rapping that was it...I was hooked! It's hard to compare her to anyone because of her range of material from uptempo song/raps to smooth flowing neo-soul flavored ballads but if forced to, I would say if you like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, and even Aaliyah, you will be feelin Ms. Dynamite. Even though I already have the import version of the CD, I'm gonna buy this clean version anyway so that I can play it around my kids and also just to support Ms. Dynamite here in the US! She recently rocked live on Saturday Night Live and if you were lucky enough to catch it you know that this young lady has it all...a beautiful singing voice, great looks and a bangin, funky band to back her up. Can't wait for the tour.

5 out of 5 stars She could be a new legend.......2005-06-21

This album deserves all the credit it gets and awards. As the reviewer says above her voice needs still to develop but it's a good first album springboard. The reason i love this album is it's overalll message and in fact the sound is not musically that british. This to me appeals in many ways, the lyrical content over the top of salamn remi beats is a match made in heaven. Tracks like dy-na-mi-tee have a bluring of cultural influences the beat is reggae like but with jazz tinglings and vocals which are very similar to lauryn hill. It takes more another stand out track uses many influences(french harmonium) being one while the vocals cut through with honesty and no messing around. Thsi album to me is the best R & B, chilled soul album out this year and only in my opinion this year three albums compete against it. Floetry's Floetic, Justin Timberlake's Justified, and Blackalicious-Blazing Arrow. I can't wait for the next album Ms Dynamite but can you show us some MC-i! ng skills. Plus another point to make watch her live cause she has such a charisma i saw her in Coventry promoting the album in Diva and the only person who has come close to being as good was truth hurts. So please support this artist cause I think she could be a new legend and for once she's british!!!!

5 out of 5 stars She's just great!!.......2003-04-22

'A Little Deeper' is the only album I own where I love every track. Ms Dynamite is a fantastic lyricist and is well worthy of every award she has got this year. My fave tracks are 'A Little Deeper,' 'Put Him Out' and 'Afraid to Fly'

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect but very encouraging.......2003-03-02

Ms Dynamite is a conscious artist who explores a range of musical styles and blends and writes intelligent, thoughtful lyrics. Some tracks are socio-political: she rails against drugs, bling-bling and domestic abuse (Natural High, It Takes More and Put Him Out respectively). The very best lyric comes on 'Watch Over Them', an amazing track where she calls people to peace and love and sings the lyric accapella. Its incredibly powerful.

Musically there's the irresistable jazzy groove of the radio-friendly 'Dy-na-mi-tee', the acoustic soul of 'Brother' or 'A Little Deeper' and the hip-hop of 'Sick n Tired'. An impressive array of guests feature, particularly the fantastic vocals Kynami Marley on the excellent 'Seed Will Grow'.

It's one or two tracks too long: the irritating 'Krazy Krush' and some more identakit RnB tracks like 'All I Ever' towards the end could have been left off, and its quite derivative; similar to Mary J Blige, Lauren Hill etc, but there's a garage edge from her roots on the rapping sections of 'It Takes More' and 'Natural High'. I was also shocked to see she didn't write any of the music herself - she only wrote the lyrics. However, the social conscience of this album is such a welcome change in the urban scene that you have to love it.

I think many people would like this: many who don't like garage might be impressed. On the other hand, garage fans expecting more like 'Boo!' the Sticky song she was responsible for might be disappointed. Keep an open mind though and you'll enjoy this eclectic melting pot of styles along with its fantastic lyrics. If you want to sample a track, I'd say 'It Takes More' best sums things up.

4 out of 5 stars Dynamite's exploding wit this album...............2003-02-22

Dynamite comes from the streets and this is reflected throughout her album. The introductory track which sets the tone for the rest of the album contains lyrics like 'life's full of pain, life's full of stress, especially when yr comin' from the streets...'
Her released tracks 'Dy-Na-Mi-Tee' 'Put him out' and 'It takes more' are infectous RnB with a garage tinge. However, don't confuse Dynamite as a garage artist...she's principally RnB. Although the tracks she's released are quite 'in yr face' Dynamite does relax with a slower beat with emotional tracks like 'Brotha.' Personally, my favourite tracks are 'seed will grow' which is mellow with Dynamite and Keymani Marley both soundin amazin 2getha, 'Krazy Krush', a track with a great beat, and 'Now u want my love' which is hugely soulful and meaningful.

Maybe a couple of tracks on the album are not providing much different but there isn't much to say about Dynamite thats negative.

4 out of 5 stars Craig David's Female Counter.......2003-01-06

Big ups to dis jazzy lil ting hailing from da UK! If you are feeling Craig David's vibe, you will enjoy this sassy lil lady. Lyrically solid, melodically balanced, genre melting, A Little Deeper stands to be one of the best albums of '03 (once released in the US). The album presents a nice mix of club hits like Crazy Crush, Dy Na Mi Te, and Feels So Good (Amazing); coupled with ballads like Brother and the title track A Little Deeper; and tracks to make you think Watch Over Them, Seeds Will Grow.

This album recieves 4 star only because it is not a US selling album at this time, the extra cost is a little absorbant. Once released in the US this album will be a 5!

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic offering from this Nor-Cal band.......2000-12-03

Anyone expecting to hear a plain old rock record from Shadrach is in for a surprise. This self-titled album is a collection of eclectic songs including two covers ("I'm into something good" and "Lord I lift your name on high").

This album has a few memorable songs, such as the funky "Snakebite Medicine" and the 80s-influenced "Taste". The aforementioned cover of "I'm into something good" was a worthy rendition of the feel-good oldie, and "Lord I lift your name on high" is reggae-style a la Reggae Praise.

Shadrach's strength lies in their musicianship -- the instruments are skillfully played, and the lead singer has a pretty good range of vocal skill. This album shows promise, and hopefully Shadrach will continue to write music and produce more albums.

      Album Description

Over thirty years after her death in 1972, Mahalia Jackson rightly remains the most famous and the greatest single practitioner of Gospel music. After facing controversies which saw her banned from performing in certain venues, an appearance on Studs Terkel's TV saw a change in fortune when she managed to gain the approval of intellectuals and critics alike, winning 1951's French disque d'or with 'I Can Put My Trust In Jesus', successfully following up with Kenneth Morris's 'Dig A Little Deeper', both featured on this compilation. Jackson's music, as presented here, always retained the magisterial dignity and spiritual force which connected so directly to a wide audience. This is evident in her moving treatment of 'The Lord's Prayer' which was a highlight of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival (immortalized in the movie Jazz On A Summer's Day) and her Top 40 hit 'Rusty Old Halo', both of which are also featured on this collection. 25 tracks. Delta. 2007.
