Album Description

Some DJs get their kicks by dropping the most obscure tunes they can find. Others take pleasure in kicking back with friends and digging out timeless favorites. Daddy G, also known as Grant Marshall, belongs to the latter school. "These," he says of the components of this mix, "are the records that are always in my box."

Although he's best known for comprising one half of Massive Attack, Daddy G has been DJing ever since he started making mixes on a cassette recorder at the age of ten. Reggae records filtered through via his older sister's DJ boyfriend. And his devotion to a good bassline grew out of his mid-teen experience of Jamaican sound systems. From around 1982, he ran the Dugout club in St. Paul's, part of the unique Bristol scene where reggae and funk collided with post-punk - and eventually produced trip hop.

Deep and wide and rocksteady.......2007-02-10

Listen to this disc in your car. As February 2007 finally arrives, this makes me hopeful about Weather Underground. G brings everything that 100th Window lacked: Funk, rocksteady, swing, swagger. Mighty, mighty grooves, Leftfield's best song ever, and Aretha making it all look easy. I guess for her it is easy.

One of the best things about the DJ Kicks collection is the way it allows the mixers/producers/DJs creating them to really be creative, and give props to their influences. One of the more outstanding examples of this is Daddy G's mix. Starting with obscure tracks from Willie Williams and Melaaz, he segues into a black box mix of Tricky's suffocatingly dense "Aftermath", and never looks back. He also gives plenty of face time to his day job in Massive Attack, featuring originals (including "I Against I" with Mos Def, only available on the Blade II soundtrack, and a barn-burner in its own right) and their remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes. With favorites by Aretha Franklin, Leftfield and Foxy Brown's anthemic "Oh Yeah" rounding out the mix, it establishes itself as a seductive reggae/dub/R&B/Euro conglomeration, and definitely a top-tier collection in a long line of prestigious mixes. Definitely one to cherish and listen to during summer nights.

I am a Massive Attack/reggae fan and my local record store guy suggested I try daddy G out. It's been in my cd player ever since. If you like trance, reggae, soul, r&b, with a little twist of euro underneath...all mixed together smooth deep and delicious ....you'll love this one too.

When it comes to organ music there's Bach, and there's everyone else. The actual amount of organ music that he composed is in dispute for a couple of reasons. On issue is attribution: much of the music exists only in copies from Bach's pupils and family members, and so the question of authorship may be in doubt. The other issue is which instrument Bach actually intended some of the keyboard music to be played on. Although scholars agonize over this problem, the fact is that Bach's music usually sounds fine played even on kazoos--it's almost indestructible--so the organ suits it in any case. This collection is one of the most comprehensive available, and it's excellently played and recorded. --David Hurwitz

One of the great CD sets of all time.......2006-02-08

Like another reviewer here I grew up on Helmut Walcha's DG set on LP, and was also familiar with a number of other "great Bach organ work" collections.

One can cavil over the way Hurford takes some of the pieces, I suppose, but his flair, imaginative registrations, and sheer musicality are hard to beat, and the recording too is fantastic.

It's quite easy to listen to three or four CDs from this set in a row, which says something about how fertile Bach's imagination, but also how absorbing Hurford's performance, and how willing he is to avoid generic and worthy church-like interpretations. This is music and music-making of the highest quality.

One of two "keepers".......2005-07-02

A lot of reviews rave about this set. I just wish they would say why it's so good and I hope they're, well, comparing it to something. Most seem to like the "choice of registration" which maybe one way an organist sizes another up.

Preferences in interpretation generally reflect the emphera of a time, and not absolutes. Choice one for this guy is probably Walcha. Dignified and insightful playing probably much more in line with what was expected of, and provided by, Bach way back when.

This set is flashier and lighter in some ways, more bombastic in others--very much a late Twentieth Century effort. Superficial. It suits a less thoughtful approach to the music which isn't a bad thing and isn't necessarily "damning with faint praise." I just doubt if this is really what the music should sound like and I don't mean that in the same way when I say that about Gould's playing. Gould was highlighting an intense part of Bach's craft, pointing the way into the music so to say.

This is a good set for those who like to shake the timbers with organ music; when it was first released in the early digital era it was marketed that way. Bach's music is pretty bullet-proof so it can stand this kind of approach. If you're not a hyper-critical listener, a period instrument hardliner, or a professional organist with strong well thought out opinions this is probably the set for you as the Walcha will sound dry and academic. On the other hand, if you are a powerful admirer of rock and roll classical this might actually be way too much Bach for you. I generally play this set (or Stokowski transcriptions) when I'm in a brain-dead mood and I want Bach-like stimulation without any work on my part. It's really quite nice.

Bach the organ works.......2004-11-23

A poor, jumpy, amateurish and unimaginative rendition of the pedal exercitium in g minor is what sticks to mind. Although its only an exercise i think it's worth more than that. More interesting stop combinations could have been used here. The toccata and fugue in d minor was too 'fancy' and was a boring affair overall with a silly choice of stops. I expected more from Peter Hurford. If this is the first time you've heard organ music please don't run away beacause of this. It can be so much more intersting.

Overall i dont think these performances do Bach Justice. Better versions can be found at virtuallybaroque.com (not my site)and better still competely free.

Peter Hurford gives incisive readings.......2004-04-05

Peter Hurford's traversal of the entire organ literature for London Decca is truly one of the greatest recorded achievements. All of the performances in this seventeen-disc set are immaculately played and perfectly performed. His vision, technicality, and sensibility make him a sensitive and authoritative interpreter of J.S. Bach's organ works. The records are mostly digital, crystal clear, and quite powerful. Hurford's command of his technique is astounding. I cannot stress how important this set truly is. I HIGHLY recommend buying this compilation. At about 8 dollars a CD, this is most certainly a steal.

EMPHATICALLY 5 stars!.......2004-02-27

Bach's organ works place incredible demands on the performer, both physically (consider the endurance it takes to play the massive Toccata in F major), technically (the Trio Sonatas, among many others), and interpretationally. Peter Hurford triumphantly meets those demands in a spectacular set of recordings.

To those who are doubters: listen to the (in)famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, that overplayed warhorse. Hurford brings to it an electricity that makes you feel you are hearing it for the first time again. He also has an amazing ear for registrations, one of the most underestimated difficulties of an organist's art, never wearying the ear, but using a wide palette of colors. [Bach himself was widely known for his innovative registrational practices. Contemporaries remarked that when he was testing organs he would pull combinations of stops that they were certain would sound badly together, only to find that he had created an entirely new sound. Thus, creative registrations should not offend purists in any way.]

Hurford's approach to these works obviously takes into consideration, but is certainly not bound by, historically informed performing practices. His phrasing is immaculate, and consistently interesting. In all, this is a stunning accomplishment.

GET THIS WHILE IT REMAINS AVAILABLE. The classical recording industry is in trouble, and the deletions axe is constantly falling. Large, expensive sets like this are sure to go. While the price itself appears high, it is really very reasonable, running under $8 per disc.

Bring your SCUBA gear -- this is *deep*.......2001-08-21

Perhaps nothing surpasses the music of J. S. Bach in terms of being able to be enjoyed at different levels (e.g., the "sensuous," "expressive" and "sheerly musical" planes, to use Aaron Copland's terms). And probably nothing in Bach's music is deeper and richer in this regard than the Clavier-Ubung III that fills the bulk of these two discs (although the Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue are equally profound). I have purchased most of Kevin Bowyer's discs in this series and am pleased to report this volume is every bit up to his usual standards of excellence. This is music that truly rewards deep study so it can be fully appreciated at all levels. The liner notes are useful but all too brief. (What this music needs is a big, thick, detailed pamphlet in a box with the CD case, or a even a separate book to go with it.) Also, the writer of the liner notes is, regrettably, a good deal less informed about Christian theology than about the music of Bach, and there is some theological nonsense to be waded through. I can't wait to obtain and compare the recording of Clavier-Ubung III by Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the deservedly respected Bach Collegium Japan. I expect Suzuki's and Bowyer's renditions will make for some interesting comparisons, and Suzuki -- a devout and theologically astute Christian -- usually makes available extensive notes when he records and releases a new CD (Suzuki's *lectures* -- not to mention his performances -- in Japan are usually sold out). Only problem: as of this writing, Suzuki's rendition is not listed in Amazon's catalog; let us hope that will be rectified quickly! In any case, get this CD by Bowyer, and then make the effort to find out what's "under the hood" making this piece tick. Your efforts will be amply rewarded.

Two strong discs of Bach's organ music.......2000-06-29

I'd consider BWV 582 and 904 among Bach's "greatest hits," and the Concerto in G (after Vivaldi) is delightful; these three pieces come after 2 CDs of the third part of the Clavier-Ubung, nice little short pieces for organ. Much to discover and delight here. Again, Bowyer's playing is a revelation, despite the "unsettling rubato" detected by our reviewer above. Highly recommended.

Excellent, as is to be expected from !K7.......2003-12-03

Ok, so it's not quite 5 stars in my humble opinion. Why? I don't know, call it my ode to perfectionism. Nevertheless, this is a da*n fine set that has some incredible tracks/mixes that are not available elsewhere. It runs the gamut of styles from dubby Kruder and Dorfmeister stylings (or any of their alter-egos such as Tosca or Peace Orchestra), to the spoken-word artistry of Ursula Rucker (who gained some fame from her work with ESL and Thievery Corporation), to neo-quasi-hip-hop-meets-electroclash-perve of Princess Superstar (think, Paris Hilton meets Miss Kitten, Peaches and Lil' Kim), to even more techno-ish artists (although, just what does "techno-ish" mean in this day and age anyway?).

It's a very good set and if you're at all into this vibe - which, since the name of this cd is the label name, chances are you know the score or wouldn't have even found your way here- it's right up your alley.

Definitely do not hesitate to snap it up and also, if you go with the two-cd set of this version, look for the limited edition dvd that is sold separately.

Excellent Double-Disc Set........2003-10-23

I'm sure many people looking into this cd are most familiar with Kruder & Dorfmeister as one of the dominant releases on K7 Records, but as I found myself after discovering Kruder and Dormeister a few years ago, there exists a whole repertoire of tracks that interlace downtempo with drum-and-bass, hip-hop, jazz elements, and various melodic components of electronica in general. I think the key, however, to this release that makes it outstanding (at least in my mind) is that there is definitely musical talent behind the songs put forth and represented by Studio K7. There is something represented here in many of the songs that I think are tough to find elsewhere in electronica and elsewhere in general, and my instinct tells me that the artists here have a true passion for what they do. That is all I could ask for.

Music for your mood.......2003-08-31

I bought this album to listen to while on travel - it turned out to be the perfect music to chill out to in airports on interminable layovers. The deluxe set has a bonus dvd that proved groovy entertainment, and people couldn't stop asking me what I was watching on my laptop.
The Music on the cd's is eclectic of course, with the hip-hop well done with flair and none of the anger and poor musicianship of other hip-hop artists. The downtempo proved perfect to chill by and was the perfect soundtrack to people watch from the bar with.
Basically, this CD has tons of music appropriate for the soundrack of your life.
