Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John SanchezCustomer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

Album Description
The title of Kierra KiKi Sheard's second and latest release, This Is Me, speaks quite well for itself. While giving a reverential nod of respect to her forebears, and delivering a couple of knockout, R&B ballads (the album's title cut, and "Hear This"), Kiki moves into a very hip, urban pocket, delivering her messages through the modern, up-to-the-minute R&B and hip-hop language of today.Under the sure, hit-making hands of several producers, including Dark Child Production's Fred Jerkins (Brandy, Destiny's Child, Michael Jackson, Kirk Franklin, Trin-i-tee 5:7), Warryn Campbell (Dru Hill, Queen Latifah, Mario, Sisqo, Brandy, Mary Mary), and her younger brother, J. Drew, Kiki and "This Is Me" delivers a sound that will captivate ears, minds, hearts and soulsas well as capture the airwavesfor a long time to come. The CD is also being released in a Special Edition format, which will include the entire album plus five bonus cuts and an alternate mix of the title song.

Kiki died and came back to life for all of us.......2007-02-19
The revolution WILL be sung LIVE with makeup, a drink, and a pink boa!.......2006-11-08
This is just my opinion, of course...
By the time Justin came along, drag had gotten kind of 'mainstream' and dull. There was nothing left, nothing further to explore. You can go to any drag review in almost any city and watch the drag queens lipsync to the same tired songs over and over. It was like McDonald's - the same kind of entertainment everywhere.
Then, in the early in the 90's, Kiki and Herb was born, and all drag queens bowed before her.
LIVE singing? A cabaret act? Unheard of...
I am a huge fan, and this album represents their zenith. It is a living breathing example of that final show that has been on the road "since 1934." Kiki talks and talks between the pauses, Herb waits for the pauses to start playing music, and Kiki is drunk, and schmaltzy, and sings music you would NEVER expect anyone EVER to put together in a song list, but it WORKS.
I mean, how do you go from Bonnie Tyler and Eminem to the Talking Heads and Joy Division?
Here is a bit of trivia, quoted from 'a reliable source': "In 2004, Kiki and Herb gave a "farewell" performance at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The one-night-only show was titled "Kiki and Herb Will Die for You" and featured a number of celebrities, including Sandra Bernhard, Isaac Mizrahi, Jake Shears, Michal Cavadias, and Rufus Wainwright."
This is that show, all 2 hours and 57 minutes of it, just Kiki, Herb, and a piano, and over 200 screaming adoring fans.
A bit of techie stuff for the audiophiles: The 2CDs play well, and the sound is crisp. It is mastered from the original elements, and is Dolby playable. There have been complaints online of skipping on the last two tracks, but not my copy. The CD inserts provide wonderful information about the show and gives a brief history.
Actually, there are about 5 encores (Total Eclipse of the Heart, Those Were the Days, Tonight's the Kind of Night, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, Running Up That Hill), which only goes to show you the crowd did not want the night to end.
About the music: From the opening note, which has Herb right off the bat singing by himself (!) "Close To It All," to the last very notes of Kiki as she sings THE MOST MOVING EVER VERSION of Kate Bush's "Running Up that Hill," you will laugh at the cheesy humor, you might cry, and if your heart is big enough, you will enjoy every moment it's on. Period.
Now, as a final thought, I'm going to make a comparison here that might get me in trouble with a LOT of 'certain people', but here goes:
Judy Garland sang at Carnegie Hall back in 1961. It has been widely hailed and quoted as one of the greatest live musical recordings ever made. She had a full orchestra, she was at her peak (no matter what anyone says), and when she sang she poured her soul into that performance.
43 years later, a skinny boy named Justin Bond sang in drag and in pearls and almost took her crown away - or at least held it, admired it, and wished he could have it, if only for almost 3 wonderful live hours.
Do yourself a MASSIVE favor - pick up this album.
I listen to it at least once a week when I'm home and the day flies by.
Thanks!

Superb Kiki Compilation.......2007-06-30
Kiki is very underrated as a singer & songwriter. She can sing rockers like I'VE GOT THE MUSIC IN ME, STEP BY STEP, ONE JUMP AHEAD OF THE STORM, and ballads with ease. This compilation CD is certainly worthy of owning. The 60's songs WHY DON'T I RUN AWAY FROM YOU and RUNNING OUT OF FOOLS are worth hearing ... rare singles from 1966 that illustrate Kiki's abilities singing r&b with that big voice when she was just a kid. Plus, includes an alternate take of album favorite YOU NEED HELP.
Wonderful & highly recommended!

It's most unfortunate that Loving and Free is not available to the general CD buying public - but it's well worth your time and effort to find the album's music somewhere on the internet to download, and to listen to it. My only negative feelings about Loving and Free are that it could be more upbeat throughout - but both love and love songs can sometimes reflect sad, bittersweet experiences.

This is the Future of Gospel.......2005-11-02
1. You Don't Know - This song has grown on me. It's not my favorite, but I love the way she incorporates the Clark Sisters' "You Brought the Sunshine" melody into the bridge.
2. Let Go - This song by far is my favorite. Kiki's voice is amazing! I can't believe how high she sings on it without sounding screechy. It's got a powerful message about persevering through hardship, and she throws in a riff a la Dorinda at the end.
3. Church Nite - Cute song, good lyrics, and stellar singing as always.
4. Closer - Great song about getting closer to God.
5. Praise Offering - Oh my goodness. If you do not feel the Holy Spirit when you hear this song, you are not saved! For real! This song gives me chills. It is so heartfelt, sincere, and beautiful. Just listen.
6. Sweetest Thing - My favorite line of the song is: "He's the man in my life, and He always makes things right." Sweet song about Jesus being the lover of you soul. It was also produced by her younger brother.
7. War - Another song produced by Kiki's younger brother. Powerful.
8. All I Am - Very smooth and soothing.
9. Done Did It-Get ready to have some more church. Girlfriend goes to town on this one.
10. So Long - Not my fave, but still good.
11. Snap - Tonex delivers on this thumping, hard-hitting track. It's very Tonex-if you're familiar with his work, then you know what I mean.
This is just such a wonderful CD. I encourage you to go out and buy it right now! You won't be sorry.

Three great performances and more good stuff !.......2005-11-22
Technically, Kiki had arguably a better voice than fellow Britgirls Cilla, Sandie and Lulu. She had a naturally strong and attractive raspy edge to her voice that should have been labeled "soulful" but wasn't, for it lacked "sympatico", an innate quality that's gifted, not learned. Dusty had heaps of it. Kiki wasn't so lucky, as a result of which success eluded her when the others were making it big in the 60s.
Kiki's Motown sessions sound as fresh today as it did in 1970. The original album contained at least three masterful and sublime performances that make this a lost classic, namely "Love Makes The World Go Round", "Johnny Raven" and "Jimmy". The album is worth owning for these three recordings alone. The first of these should have been an instant hit but sadly wasn't. The second easily tops the Supremes' 70s cover on their "Touch" album. The last of these is simply immaculate and from the sleevenotes, it looks like Kiki feels the same way. There're other good stuff like "Day Will Come Between Sunday and Monday", "Love Is A Warm Kind Of Sorrow", "Oh Be My Love", and a slowed down version of Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life". Others like "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" are blander and don't compare, respectively with Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell's and Dusty Springfield's (from "Dusty Definitely") more familiar versions.
Besides, Motown made some poor choices too. Kiki was ill advised to cover the Dusty #1, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". This dismal attempt at an alternative chorus arrangement to the Dusty original only succeeds in being awkward and inept. Likewise, Kiki sleepwalks through a perfunctory rendition of Smokey and the Miracles' "I Second That Emotion" that makes you wonder why they even bothered. The four previously unreleased bonus tracks (Tracks 15-18) are uneven including two similarly uninspired performances ("Walk On By" and "Put A Little Love In Your Heart") which are more like try out sessions and finally abandoned for good reason. Good to have for completists but that's about it.
Kiki's Motown session is more than a quaint slice of late 60s recording history. A little uneven perhaps - but hey, since when did Motown artistes make great albums before the Marvin Gaye "What's Going On " era ? - but there's magic in at least three of these performances and more good stuff, so that's good enough reason to go out and buy yourself a copy. Listen and enjoy !

Excellent.......2006-10-27
I am thankful that we can have this type of diversity in spiritual music. I love all types of music, spiritual and mainstream, and in my opinion this is a perfect blend of The Message and current musical trends -- especially when you consider Kiki's age.
Kiki's age! That's worth mentioning. She sings with experience, wisdom, and power. That Clark musical gene is strong and you can hear shades of her mom and auntie often ... yet baby girl has a vibe all her own, and I thank God for it. This girl is already a talent beyond compare and I can't even imagine to what levels she's capable of rising to.
Some reviewers have said that this album "doesn't sound like Kiki." It does to me; I mean, if not her, who does it sound like? There are a lot of younger female singers (spiritual and mainstream) that have soprano voices and attempt to do vocal acrobatics. But Kierra is in a class of one and really can't be compared to any of them.
This is the expanded edition of THIS IS ME and the extra tracks are more than worth the premium over the regular edition. That set, with its 13 tracks, stands as a solid effort by itself. But if you know you can have more of what the Lord has blessed us with through this young lady of ministry, why miss out?
THIS IS ME is a job well-done, and clearly shows that the Clark legacy is alive, well, and kicking!
wait this isnt a bad album.......2006-09-12
P.S. stop hatin on kirk. kirk franklin is awesome. also karen clark is great to. stop being so judgemental. oh yeah that person that was talking about the interview. i dont think she was trying to justify listening to lil jon. she was just saying an example. that just because one listens to or sings secular music does not mean that they are doing evil. ligthen up please.
Open your mind and your heart.......2006-08-09
I also have to say that I know unsaved people that I have played this cd around and they absolutely love it. They were really suprised that chritian music could be so appealing to them. That's just the firt step, get them hooked to the music, then as they listen more and more they being to hear the message and through that is how lives are changed. Maybe this cd isn't for everyone, but I will say it keeps me strong in my faith, gives me something positive to listen to, and clearly has the ability to reach those that don't know Jesus christ. I highly doubt God himself can be mad at that, so why are you?
You most definitely want to buy this version of the album as there are two. One does not include the bonus tracks like this one does. I think the extra tracks are worth the few dollars extra you might pay for it.
