If you like jazz (and not just jazzy grooves) there are only a few acts outside the established jazz community that deliver the true spirit of the "blue notes". We dare to say that Povo (meaning "people" in Portuguese) is on of these rare acts. With a cool blend of Scandinavian live jazz and programmed rhythms they have already made many friends around the world after their releases on the Raw Fusion label.
Povo is a duo consisting of Lars Vissing and Anders Peter Andreasen. They both reside in the Danish capitol Copenhagen, which is well documented as a city where jazz had many bright moments during the early days of jazz. While Lars is one of Denmarks leading jazz musicians/producers Anders has been living the jazz life since the late 80s as a record collector, DJ and club promoter. Together they form an impressive alliance where Lars experience as jazz musician and Anders knowledge of the "new" jazz scene will help them to cross any boundaries. The Povo sound is already supported by some of the biggest names in the jazz/dance industry like Gilles Peterson, Koop, Nicola Conte, Jazzanova and Kyoto Jazz Massive.
After over a year in the studio Povo are now finally ready with their debut album. Expect an open-minded selection whith everything from melancholic vocal compositions, deep modal tracks and storming jazz dancers. Even though they might cross in to soul, Latin, fusion or even pop territories there is one thing you can be sure of Povo are 100% jazzin!!!

Incredible jazz 'n' soul !.......2007-03-10
After all theFinnish jazz explorations recently, Povo are Denmark's representatives on the European jazz dance scene.
"We Are Povo" is their debut album (out on Raw Fusion Records from Stockholm), this came out last year and got a little over-looked.
But with a short tour to come, it seems a good time to have another listen.
I remember DJ Animisiewasz Startt first playing the cover of "Perfect Day" one sunny Saturday afternoon but the sultry "Eyes Closed" soft samba sounds better now; more in the Schema/Nicola Conte mode.
Talkin' of him, "Too Right To Be Wrong" (Trine-Lise Varing on vocals) is a lounge-samba to compliment Mr Conte's "New Samba" remix of "You Are".
The Blue Note jazz is provided by their own blues compositions "Ed The Bull", "Hot Lips" (Mark Linn vocals) and their cover of Horace Silver's "Senior Blues" with Ed Jones on vocals.
The excellence of Scandinavian musicianship is evident throughout all the members of the band, including Lars (brass), Bastian Sjelberg (bass), Heine Hansen (Piano), Fredrik Lundin (saxes/flute/clarinet) and various drummers.
"Bee-Da-Bau" is another very Blue Note track and Fredrick's playing is a highlight as it is also on the title track.
You've got to be in the right mood for this, but when you are, it's so cool man. The mix of modal, Latin, fusion and jazz "n" soul influences are a delight and must be a great experience LIVE.
Outstandingly enjoyable debut that swings and tantalises in equal measure!.......2006-01-18
It's accessible jazz, that crosses over from house/dance/lounge with maturity and deep musical integrity. Can't wait for the next CD of work from this hugely talented duo.

Hot jazz from the land of cold.......2005-07-22
And the wait was worthwhile! At last a modern jazz record that looks back for inspiration but adds something new in melodies and arrangement. Not too modern but not too retro. The perfect balance. Most of the instruments are played live but a clever programming gives the right punch even to half speed tracks.
The voice of Trine-Lise Vaering reminds a bit of Norah Jones but it's her only defect (if this is a defect). The cover of "Perfect day" by Lou Reed is uplifting. And I love the smokey atmosphere of "You are" that sounds absolutely retro but with all the pathos and passion that lacks instead in the Nicola Conte recent album, similar in certain aspects but not that good at all. One of the best albums of this year I guess.
